AdPorts and Special Economic Zone on Thursday reported that its Profit After Tax or net profits during the just-concluded financial year 2023-24 grew by a whopping 50 per cent to Rs 8,104 crore. Cyclonic storm 'Tauktae' likely to reach Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva districts on Monday, IMD issues 'orange' alert

New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to further intensify into a cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigard district and Daman on June 3. According to IMD's scientist Ananda Kumar Das, the depression is located about 370 kilometres southwest of Goa's Panjim, 690 kilometres south-southwest of Mumbai and 920 kilometres south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. "It is very likely to move nearly northwards initially till June 2 morning and then recurve north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during evening or night of June 3," Das stated. Harihareshwar town is over 200 kilometres from both Mumbai and Pune, and is over 360 kms from Daman. The well-marked low-pressure area over the south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area had concentrated into a depression in the early hours on Monday morning. A low pressure area and a depression are the first two levels on the IMD's eight-category scale used to classify cyclones based on their intensity. The depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Monday evening. It will further become furious and turn into a cyclonic storm in the wee hours of the morning on June 2 and then into a severe cyclonic storm by evening or night of June 3. When it becomes a severe cyclonic storm, it will have a wind speed of 105-115, gusting to 125 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 3. According to the IMD, it again will weaken into a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 60-70, gusting to 80 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 4. IMD's cyclone track shows that Nisarga will cross very close to the Mumbai coast while entering the land. Maharashtra and Gujarat are on pre-cyclone alert as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the states on June 3 and June 4. Cyclone 'Nisarga' to cross Maha, Gujarat coasts in 2 days

Thursday, June 15: <keyword id="17578676" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyclone-biparjoy" source="Orion">Cyclone Biparjoy</keyword> is ready to touch down over India's west coast today. The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm is expected to make landfall near Gujarat’s Jakhau Port by Thursday evening, and gradually lose steam as it continues to move inland — all while triggering potentially catastrophic torrents of rain in the region. Post-landfall, Biparjoy is expected to continue its northeastward movement until it eventually fizzles out over Rajasthan. But even during its gradual deintensification from a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm to a low-pressure area, the system will carry on dumping an ocean-worth of rain over the desert state. According to the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>), the southwestern parts of Rajasthan will be in for heavy to very heavy (64.5 mm-224.5 mm) and even extremely heavy downpours (more than 224.5 mm) this Friday and Saturday (June 16-17). The intense precipitation will slowly spill into southeast Rajasthan by Saturday. And while not as intense, some light or moderate showers may also be observed in most parts of the state. In fact, some experts reckon some parts of western and northwestern India may end up accumulating more than the average June rainfall within the next two days! Therefore, it is advisable for the regional residents to keep an umbrella handy this weekend, even if they do not live in areas expected to beat the brunt of the cyclone’s impact. Moreover, squalls winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph are likely over South Rajasthan from Friday noon to evening, followed by winds at 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph till Saturday midnight. Given these predictions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch (meaning be updated) over Rajasthan for today, but this will quickly escalate. On Friday, the West Rajasthan subdivision will be placed under a red warning — the highest level of warning that cautions residents to take necessary action against the hazardous weather. Thereafter, the red warning will also spread to East Rajasthan on Saturday. After that, both subdivisions will be downgraded to an orange alert (meaning be prepared) for Sunday before deintensifying back into yellow for Monday. In particular, the following districts within the state will remain on orange alert and red warning in the coming days: Saturday, June 17: Pali and Jalore on red warning; Jaisalmer, Sirohi and Barmer on orange alert Sunday, June 18: Pali and Jalore on red warning; Ajmer, Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Sirohi and Barmer on orange alert Monday, June 19: Jaipur, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Pali and Udaipur on orange alert Further, as East India reels under searing heatwaves, Biparjoy's rainy and windy shenanigans will induce a distinct chill in the west. Cyclone Tauktae sinks boat in the Arabian Sea — 26 dead and 49 still missing

<ul><li>They say the warm ocean temperatures in the northern Arabian Sea results in increased moisture and large fluctuations in the monsoon winds.</li><li>Less than two months ago, the <keyword id="447508" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Western-Coast">western coast</keyword> of India was bracing itself for cyclone Nisarga, and it is now dealing with a torrential downpour.</li><li>The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts active monsoon conditions over the west coast, including Mumbai and east coast of India, and likely intense rainfall over Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, <keyword id="43945" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhattisgarh">Chhattisgarh</keyword> and Odisha.</li></ul> Scientists on Thursday explained the extreme rainfall event in Mumbai to an anomaly that will become a recurrent pattern with increasing warming of the ocean and poleward shift of the low-level jetstream that impacts the Indian summer monsoon. They say the warm ocean temperatures in the northern Arabian Sea results in increased moisture and large fluctuations in the monsoon winds. Less than two months ago, the western coast of India was bracing itself for cyclone Nisarga, and it is now dealing with a torrential downpour. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts active monsoon conditions over the west coast, including Mumbai and east coast of India, and likely intense rainfall over Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. A low-pressure area formed over the North Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts on August 4, which is predicted to become more marked during the next 24 hours and move west-northwestward to south Gujarat across Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during next three days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for these regions till August 10. A cyclonic circulation lies over south Gujarat and neighbourhood at middle and upper level tilting southwards with height. "While it is too early for an in-depth analysis of the ongoing floods, what we can say is that there is an increasing trend in heavy rainfall events on the west coast of India," explained Roxy Mathew Koll, Scientist with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and Lead Author with the IPCC Oceans and Cryosphere. "In our analysis of rainfall data over the last 70 years, we find a three-fold rise in extreme rains along the west coast and central India." This is because the monsoon winds over the Arabian Sea are now exhibiting large fluctuations, thanks to a warmer environment. Occasional surges in the winds drive a huge amount of moisture supply from the Arabian Sea, across the entire west coast. These episodes result in an intense rainfall spread over three days. "Besides some of my colleagues at New York University have found a slight northward shift of the monsoon westerlies in recent decades. This could mean that the chances of heavy rainfall might be larger towards the north of Western Ghats, but that aspect is yet to be explored," Koll said. Anjal Prakash, Research Director and Adjunct Associate Professor with the Bharti Institute of Public Policy of the Indian School of Business, said: "We have enough knowledge now that links some of the high precipitation events with rapidly changing climatic conditions." "IPCC reports have given pointers apart from other studies of similar nature. This information must lead to wisdom on what could be done. Some of the Indian cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, <keyword id="6368842" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vizag">Vizag</keyword> and Goa are at greater risks due to its proximity to the sea or being in the high-hazard zones. "Mumbai being the richest Indian municipalities do not have a lack of resources to adapt to these climatic events. With proper adaptation measures, some of the impacts of high rainfalls could be avoided." During the summer monsoon of 2016, heavy-to-extreme rainfall events occurred across the central Indian region resulting in large-scale floods. The floods were widespread and caused damage to life and property on the west coast, including Mumbai, and submerged the Kaziranga National Park in <keyword id="6354915" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam">Assam</keyword>. A snapshot of the satellite rainfall data during these floods reveals a widespread heavy rainfall event spread over three days. The regional extent of the widespread rainfall event shows a huge similarity with that of the increasing trends in extreme rain events. The Mumbai 2017 floods also exhibited a similar pattern, say experts. Some of the historical floods which resulted in the largest loss in terms of human lives and property, for example, the central Indian floods in 1989 and 2000, Mumbai floods in 2005, South Asian floods in 2007, etc., were all a result of intense rainfall spread over three days, tracing their moisture source to the westerly flow from the Arabian Sea. Cyclone Tauktae is intensifying with surprising speed, bearing the tell-tale signs of climate change

New Delhi, Jan 30 () Gujarat, home for busiest seaports in the country, has recorded cargo traffic growth rate of 4.1 per cent in the April-December period of the current fiscal, which is lower than the national average, according to Union Shipping Ministry data.
 While non-major ports in India saw a 4.8 per cent rise in cargo tariff in the first nine months of 2019-20 to 447.21 million tonnes, the ones of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) grew by 4.1 per cent, the data showed.
 Gujarat had been the most preferred coastal state attracting significant cargo traffic and contributed significantly to the maritime trade and logistics in the country. GMB handles more than two-thirds of traffic at non-major ports.
 But with Maharashtra and ports on the east coast attracting higher tariff, the market share of Gujarat has fallen.
 Industry sources said one reason for the shift may be very few handling restrictions in eastern states such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha while Gujarat continues to operate with a port policy designed 25 years back in 1995.
 The state government in September 2019 announced intentions to bring a new 'game-changer' policy that removed restrictions on cargo handling.
 The policy, sources said, would have resulted in Rs 4,000 crore investment in the state along with Rs 400 crore revenue per year to the government. But the policy is yet to be implemented despite it being approved by the Chief Minister and being notified by Gujarat Maritime Board.
 Sources said the policy, which would have added 32 more jetties without any restriction on cargo handling, was to have significant benefits to the industry in terms of lowering of logistics costs and ease of doing business and would have created 25,000 additional jobs.
 During the April-December 2019-20, Directorate of Ports at Odisha recorded the highest growth in traffic at 64.2 per cent followed by Ports of Tamil Nadu Maritime Board (34.1 per cent), Directorate of Ports, Puducherry, 27.7 per cent), Ports Management Board, Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands (25.4 per cent) and Directorate of Ports, Karnataka (25 per cent) over the same period of the previous year, the shipping ministry data showed.
 However, when it came to handling cargo, Gujarat Maritime Board handled the maximum cargo of 304.99 million tonnes with a share of 68.2 per cent followed by Directorate of ports, Andhra Pradesh (17 per cent), Maharashtra Maritime Board (6.8 per cent) and Directorate of Ports, Odisha (5.7 per cent), it said.
 As far as coastal cargo was concerned Gujarat Maritime Board handled 35 million tonnes with a share of 51.6 per cent followed by Maharashtra Maritime Board (22 per cent).

 Moving to Gujarat The cyclone is moving close to Gujarat at a speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. It is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night, said IMD. "The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com. As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14. Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat. The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.

A storm surge of about 1-1.5 metre over the astronomical tide is likely to inundate the low-lying coastal areas of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagarh, Diu, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts. The IMD has been issuing regular bulletins to the concerned authorities, said a Home Ministry statement. Preparatory measures The state government of Gujarat deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue teams to minimise the damage, if any. It is considering asking for another 10 NDRF teams from the central government. Overall, 35 teams will be made available across the coastal district. The NDRF teams, along with teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipment and others. The Border Security Force (BSF) is being deployed in Kutch, while the state is co-ordinating with the military for swift rescue and response efforts. "All possible measures are to be taken to avoid any human casualty and preparations be kept ready to restore any damage that may be caused to infrastructure. Rescue teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army, Coast Guard and Border Security Force (BSF) are also in readiness. The Ministry of Home Affairs is in continuous touch with the state governments and the Central agencies concerned," an official statement said. Academic institutions closed The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday issued detailed advisories to Gujarat and the Union Territory of Diu, requesting them to take all precautionary measures to ensure that no human life is lost.  Cut to 2017. The 8th edition of Vibrant Gujarat is taking place under a Chief Minister who is just a little more than five months into his job. The erstwhile Chief Minister <keyword id="4057401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="anandbehen-patel">Anandbehen Patel</keyword> had failed in her job to appease Dalits, create more jobs and keep <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> president <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Shah">Amit Shah</keyword> convinced. As Gujarat’s ‘economic expressway’ (as they prefer calling the event) seems to zoom off, you can hear echoing whispers among a few industrialists at the event, how much of the proposed promises have actually been implemented. Gujarat, which topped the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in India has now lost it to <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> and Telengana. 
 
Experts believe, as Modi has become the Prime Minister, there have been instances of social unrest and political instability that came to the fore. And as the last business summit before the election is underway, investors’ minds are getting impacted. 
 
This edition of Vibrant Gujarat has seen MoUs touch Rs 20 lakh crores. The amount is likely to cross Rs 30 lakh croremark today, according to The Times of India. Among the sectors where companies expressed their intent to invest defence and aerospace, mining and minerals, chemicals, steel, urban infrastructure, petroleum and petrochemicals, renewable energy, automotive, electronics and information technology are noteworthy. 
 While the state government of Gujarat said that conversion rate is clocked at 70%, the opposition party <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> claimed the actual to be pegged at not more than 10%. However top business conglomerates <keyword id="4057400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-and-adani-group">Reliance and Adani Group</keyword> said that they have fulfilled their promises. 
 To believe Gujarat’<keyword id="4057399" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="s-directorate-of-economics-and-statistics">s Directorate of Economics and Statistics</keyword>, about 8% have been implemented out of Rs 40 trillion proposed investments.  While Gujarat ranked fifth, Maharashtra that doesn’t organize any such summit has attracted the most FDIs, almost 30% of India’s total between 2002-2016, according to <keyword id="29740" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bloomberg">Bloomberg</keyword>. The same media report said, Gujarat is no longer the easiest place to do business any more. 
 However, Modi’s brain child Vibrant Gujarat has seen several other states including <keyword id="6357783" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-Bengal">West Bengal</keyword> and <keyword id="6355588" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> adapt the same concept and get investments. 
 The social unrest in India’s one of the most opulent states is rising. Only a few weeks back, Conveners of <keyword id="2983086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patidar-Anamat-Andolan-Samiti">Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti</keyword> (<keyword id="6406288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PaaS">PAAS</keyword>), <keyword id="45661" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OBC">OBC</keyword> leaders and dalits have threatened to disrupt the summit, if fixed-pay and contractual employees were not made permanent by the state government. So a state, whose Minister of Industries, Mines and Minerals and <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> department <keyword id="387325" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Patel">Rohit Patel</keyword> boasted of ‘minimum labour unrest’ during his speech seems to be getting distracted. 
 
Not just that. A few months ago, Gujarat has witnessed backlash against jobless economic growth that could jeopardise development and BJP’s coming back t power in 2019, reported Bloomberg. 
 
This season of Vibrant Gujarat seemed to be relying largely on the previous editions of success. Most state ministers thanked Modi immensely for this summit, while avoiding media question of how much implementation has happened. What they offered are figures of investments and not facts about implementation.

 The 40- feet- long “mobile water purification bus” started from the coastal town of Bhavnagar in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. It was indigenously developed by the Council of Science and Industrial Research. The bus contained an RO desalination and ultrafiltration plant. It also has a TFC membrane filtration that filters viruses and bacteria from the water. A similar bus was used to help the flood-affected Kerala. Cyclone Fani has been the strongest cyclone to hit India in 43 years. As many as 800,000 people were reportedly evacuated just before the cyclone made landfall in the eastern coast of India. In fact, <keyword id="50863" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhubaneswar">Bhubaneswar</keyword>, the capital of Odisha lost over one million trees and 64 lives because of the deadly cyclone that came at a speed of 165-200km on May 2. However, there were no major casualties.
