India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

Calling it a ‘triangulation’ of downside risks, rating agency CRISIL cut the country’s growth estimates by 0.2% to 6.9% for the current financial year. This year, India's growth might be less than the 14-year record average of 7%. Just two years back, in 2017, the country clocked in an impressive 8.2% growth which was the fastest in the decade. And some of the recent, and much-needed, reforms would pay off only over the medium term. There would, therefore, be some near-term onus on monetary policy to stimulate. India's economic growth this year may be less than the 14-year average
-- and the government is helpless

<ul><li>According to the International Labour Organisation’s India Wage Report, the average annual wage growth from 1993-94 to 2011-12 was 3.7%, while <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> grew at a yearly rate of 7%. </li><li>By 2011-12, the overall daily wage in India was around ₹247, while casual workers, estimated to total 62% of the total workforce, only earned ₹143 a day. </li><li>It does bear mentioning, however, that the gender wage gap has decreased from 48% in 1993-94 to 34% in 2011-12. </li></ul>When India opened up its economy in 1991, the goal of the policy was clear: to accelerate <keyword id="47276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-growth">economic growth</keyword>. Two decades, later, it seems that India’s financial liberalisation - which comprised a surge in foreign investment, a reduction in tariffs and deregulation- has had its intended effect on India’s GDP and then some. However, a recent <a href="https://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/---asia/---ro-bangkok/---sro-new_delhi/documents/publication/wcms_638305.pdf">report</a> by the International Labour Organisation shows that this growth hasn’t been inclusive, indicated by the fact that wage growth in India has significantly trailed economic growth from 1993-94 to 2011-12. Over the period in question, the average annual growth in <keyword id="6356975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="wages">wages</keyword> was a mere 3.7% compared to the 7% average yearly growth in India’s GDP. On a cumulative basis, India’s GDP grew by four times in the last two decades, while real wages only doubled. Interestingly, most of the increase in wages came in the last 8 years. This sluggish wage growth has contributed to a rise in inequality and exacerbated the economic divide between rural and urban areas. The daily wage in urban centres in India is still double that of rural areas, indicating a lack of good-quality jobs in rural regions of the country. By 2011-12, the overall daily wage in India was around ₹247, while casual workers, estimated to total 62% of the total workforce, only earned ₹143 a day. Additionally, nearly half of India’s workforce is estimated to be employed in the agricultural sector, a sector that has consistently trailed others in terms of output growth and productivity. The report did show a few positive changes. Rural wages increased at a faster pace than urban wages. Additionally, wages for female workers also increased at a faster pace than wages for male workers. However, this is largely due to the fact that both rural wages and female wages had a low base from which to grow from. It does bear mentioning, however, that the gender wage gap has decreased from 48% in 1993-94 to 34% in 2011-12. The <keyword id="6456249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ilo">ILO</keyword> suggested a number of ways to reduce the level of wage inequality such as the continued revision of minimum wage laws, the improved collection of worker data by government agencies, the formalisation of the informal sector and the implementation of skilling programmes to improve labour flexibility and productivity.

New Delhi, Jan 29 () German audio solutions maker Sennheiser is confident of continuing its double-digit growth in India, which is among its fastest growing markets, according to a top company official.
 The company, which is among the top three brands in the premium audio category category, is keen on growing its market share further by introducing a new range of wireless headphones and expanding into segments like soundbars targeted at high income households.
 "The growth (in India) is driven by several factors, including the rise of average consumer income and adoption of new technology and rising penetration of headphones (which is still low compared to some other countries)," Sennheiser Electronics GmbH &amp; Co KG Co-CEO Daniel Sennheiser told .
 "I believe that a combination of these factors means that our expectations are very large here," he added.
 India is among Sennheiser's top 10 markets globally and is part of its APAC business. It is the second largest market in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region after China.
 "India is a fast, double-digit growing market for us. We are focusing here on wireless headphones and in the premium space, we have doubled last year," Sennheiser said, adding that shift to wireless from wired headphones is driving growth in India as well as other markets.
 The company is confident about its positioning despite competition from rivals offering similar products at competitive pricing.
 "We understand consumers' needs better than anyone else," he said, adding, "We would not compete on price but on value."
 The company plans to introduce a new line of headphones in India in the second half of the year, targeted at potential customers who want to upgrade their experience.
 "This would be very exciting for the Indian customers who want to come to Sennheiser portfolio," Sennheiser India Director, Consumer Segment Kapil Gulati said.
 Presently, about 50 per cent of Sennheiser's India revenue comes from consumer headphones and other audio devices, while the remaining is contributed by professional products like microphones and conference systems.
 The company on Wednesday introduced AMBEO soundbar, priced at Rs 1.99 lakh, which can deliver 3D sound with immersive sound and deep bass in a single device.
 "With this additional soundbar, we are confident that our market share would be higher," Gulati said.
 The company, which started its journey in India in 2007, gets 50 per cent sales from online platforms.

Sennheiser hopeful of maintaining double-digit growth in India

New Delhi, Feb 2 () Italian super sports car maker Lamborghini expects its premium luxury SUV Urus to drive future growth in India with the model accounting for 50 per cent of its sales in the country, a senior company official said.
 The company, which delivered its 50th Urus in India last year, has an eight-month waiting period on the model at present.
 "Urus is playing a big role and is contributing 50 per cent of our business. Order bank is still very healthy for the car," Lamborghini India Head Sharad Agarwal told .
 He further said, "Our future growth in India will also be largely driven by Urus while sportscar will remain at the core of our operations."
 The company sold a total of 52 units in India last year as compared to 45 units in 2018.
 Explaining why the Urus will become the mainstay for Lamborghini in India, Agarwal said, "We have not seen the sports car segment growing at a very fast pace. Urus is helping us bring new customers from premium luxury sedans and SUVs, customers who were not earlier in super luxury segment."
 The model has also brought in a whole new set of buyers who are first time buyers of the Lamborghini brand.
 "What we are seeing is the newer set of people, first-time buyers of Lamborghini are further growing from earlier 70 per cent to around 75-80 per cent. It (Urus) is actually helping us expand to reach new segment. Plus it is also helping us to expand the super luxury segment," he said.
 Reflecting on how well has Urus been received in India, Agarwal said, "The model is still on eight months waiting period. In 2019 we delivered the 50th Urus in India, in flat one year of sales of the car, which means we were delivering one Urus every week in its first year of sales in India. That's a big achievement in super luxury segment."
 He further said due to Urus the overall usage pattern of Lamborghini cars in India among its customers are changing.
 "Customers are really loving the car (Urus). On an average we have our cars which are doing around 2,500 km a year and with Urus we are on an average clocking around 8,000 km. So, people are really using the car and they are coming with different set of expectation from the car," Agarwal said.

The demonetization implemented by the Narendra Modi government affected a large number of businesses. Especially small businesses were the ones to suffer much. The scenario following 2016 also saw a large number of job losses across multiple industry domains. The government also introduced the GST (Goods and Service Tax) in July 2017 which was considered a massive reform by the BJP government. Though the move was heralded by many as a vital measure to regulate and systematize the taxation procedures, the implementation was not that easy. There were riddles of problems to solve and the implementation happened in a haphazard manner that also led to the slowing down of the GDP growth. Yet another area that contributed to the slowing down of GDP growth after 2014 is the private investments segment. In fact, this had been a major challenge to the country’s economy. Over the 12 months ending with March 2018, India had scrapped a large number of projects which was said to be an all-time high in terms of number and volume. This fact has been reported in the report published by the Center For Monitoring Indian Economy. The report card for the whole year does not look encouraging enough. Recovery and a quick surge in GDP growth Though the ride had been bumpy over the past four years after 2014, the Indian economy managed to be labelled as the fastest growing economy of the world in 2018. The World Bank has forecasted that India’s economy is all set to grow at a rapid pace than the other major economies of the world. Now India economy is the third largest in Asia and the trends seen at present can move Indian economy to the upper slots in the years to come. A significant recovery in private instruments and a strong growth in the consumption of goods and services in the private sector is expected to fuel the growth of Indian economy over the next few years.

And like a middle class person, the country also saddled itself with expenses which are eating into it. The Union government has come up with many populist schemes at the central level on health, cleanliness and much more. Bibek Debroy, the chairman of Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council has a three-point programme to change the sorry state of affairs, especially when the economy itself is slowing down. The economist who has made significant contribution to the game theory, believes that there are limits to public expenditure due to the current situation. Cut direct tax rate Added to that, Debroy has a few things that would aid in the long run. “The direct tax rate can be reduced significantly. The only way to reform direct taxes is to eliminate exemptions for both personal and corporate taxes,” Debroy said. Indian government had promised to bring down the corporate tax rate to 25% from 30% provided all exemptions are done away with. However, as it stands today, firms with an annual revenue of up to ₹400 crore are eligible pay tax at the rate of 25%. On personal income tax, individuals have been given some respite up to an annual income of ₹5 lakhs. However, the government imposed a super rich tax for those with annual income of ₹2.5 crore to 25% from 15%, and those who earn more than that, will be taxed at 37%. However, what Debroy is asking for is a broad-based cut in income tax which may leave more money in the hands of consumers to spend. Debroy believes that it should be streamlined to three. Though he said that he prefers a single slab, it would be impractical. “Everyone wants the 24 per cent to come down to 18 per cent, but no one wants the items under 0 per cent to come under 6 per cent,” he told Indian Express. Let states spend “So, if we think health is important and we want the Union government to spend on health, by the same token, the state government should pay for defence. After all, I have got limitation in terms of resources available for public expenditure, I need to prioritise. That prioritisation cannot be done by the Union government alone, but also by states,” Debroy told Indian Express<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/business/bibek-debroy-interview-the-key-question-is-are-we-on-a-trend-economic-growth-rate-of-6-per-cent-or-7-per-cent-5915773/"> in an interview</a>. But it is quite surprising that <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>, a country that took to Information Technology like a fish takes to water, is somewhat lagging in picking up robotics.

	 

	It has been quite a while since robotics entered the mainstream. However, <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> is yet to wake up to the advanced trend. But what causes this lethargy, you may very well ask. Well, the answer isn’t simple or straightforward, to say the least. For one, industrialisation is not easy or commonplace in agrarian economy-centred country like <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>. The country essentially features what the world calls an ‘old and traditional’ <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, where traditional knowledge and age-old practices are still alive to a large extent. Yet, modern economy has also remained sound and strong in this country, thanks to the large talent pool and focus on education in the recent times.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	<st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>’s phenomenal success in the IT space was fairytale stuff – it was a ‘never before, never after’ kind of opportunity that the country was quick to identify and seize. 	In a country where education is the sole focus of almost all middle-class households who form a large chunk that leads the urban economy, any futuristic discipline with application possibilities at industrial level should be lapped up eagerly. Nevertheless, robotics hasn’t quite taken off here.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	Of course, there is a school here and a summer camp there talking about robotics, and there is one dedicated institution teaching the discipline. But it is yet to gain a comprehensive outlook in <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>. The industrial scope and application seem a distant possibility as the human-resource rich <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> doesn’t see, at least not on its own soil, the chances of robotic knowledge becoming a part of human existence.<o:p></o:p>

	 
 To begin with, we still require an organised effort to integrate the discipline into our current education system. There is hardly any vocational course dedicated to teaching robotics at school/college level. Engineering graduates cannot opt for robotics as a separate stream, but can choose to specialise in it after graduation. And that is a real downer. The <keyword id="2238211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Robotics">Indian Institute of Robotics</keyword> is probably the lone dedicated institution for the development of this discipline. But just one facility can hardly meet the requirements of the growing population of young people who are willing to explore new avenues in this space.<o:p></o:p>

	 
 In contrast, new openings have come up in sectors such as transportation, defence &amp; security, weather and <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword>, artificial intelligence, mobile OS and home applications, especially when it comes to providing support to the aged/terminally ill/people with special needs.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	<st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>’s strategy for industrial development has witnessed a paradigm shift since 1991. Employment generation and disbursal of economic benefits across the classes not covered by the progress indicators have been the main concern. With the focus on manufacturing, <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> is looking at pharma, biotechnology, infrastructure and food processing as the main areas of investment and growth. Although robotics can well be a beneficiary of the growth curve, along these sectors, the most tangible reason as to why it may never happen in the near future is anybody’s guess. <o:p></o:p>

	 

	Employment generation for the growing urban population, along with controlling migration from rural areas as people move to cities in search of livelihood, has many repercussions on the urban landscape. Consequently, the authorities have been spreading out industrial corridors and SEZs in areas where progress has remained a mirage. One application of robotics is the production of high-efficiency robots and those can be leveraged for a longer period of time to enhance productivity. But then, the government will have to come up with the right strategy and create livelihood options for all those people who would be displaced as a result of ‘robotisation.’<o:p></o:p>

	 

	This is the real crux of the problem. Another issue that has been bothering every other sector is ‘zero’ government backing. The Indian government is treading with great caution in this industrial biosphere and would not want to upset the applecart when it comes to ‘human first’ policies.<o:p></o:p>
