It is bringing in women to work at its warehouse and also for delivery. Currently, 40% of its employees are women. “Warehousing was traditionally considered a male dominated industry. However, in modern times and with better support, women employees are gaining strength in warehouses as well. We employed around 500 women employees in <keyword id="8328799" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="grofers-warehouses">Grofers warehouses</keyword> currently in Bengaluru, Gurgaon and Kolkata,” said Ankush Arora, Head, HR, Grofers. The company plans to follow the same trend in Faridabad, Hyderabad and Noida. Grofers also provides safety measures – from cameras at all locations, female security guards, housekeeping, HRs, pick up and drop facility to fixed working hours. Through several training programmes, the female workforce carries out tasks like inventory putaway, inventory audit, order picking and billing, return processing, etc. “These training programmes help women employed to improve their skills and advance further within the field,” said Arora. Grofers is also reaping in the benefits as it has resulted in an increase in efficiency. Its onboarding experience, job training and rewards and recognition also aided this growth. “With our focus on these, we have been able to achieve an overall decrease in absenteeism rate, particularly for a set of female team members-- which has not only increased the process efficiencies and productivity but also enhanced our overall employee engagement score,” said Arora. From reports about it shutting down offices across cities, the company has made a comeback. In the last two years, it claims to have grown by a staggering 800%, and clock in annual revenues of $400 million. In May 2019, the e-grocery startup raised $200 million from Softbank Vision Fund, falling just a few million short in valuation to become a unicorn.

On the first day of the ongoing Grand Orange Bag Days (GOBD), Grofers sold 1.35 crore products for ₹115 crores, according to a company statement. Grofers has its second edition of GOBD sale going from August 10-18, where it’s offering consumers 100% cashback on purchase to all users. Customers earn this cashback in terms of Orange cash (the startup’s own cash for users to purchase products). Through this event, the startup hopes to make ₹580 crores in sales in one month. The top selling products were atta (flour), sugar and instant noodles “Our opening day sale of ₹115 crore, which is double of the GOBD 1 first day sale is a testament to our successful engagement with consumers and a great sign for small businesses that are growing across the country by partnering with us,” said Kshitij Torka, Senior VP, Demand, Grofers. As they run out of this stock, Maggi will still be available for purchase but you will have to pay for it. Apart from this, the hyperlocal delivery company has tied up with Gitanjali group to deliver range of gold and silver coins and also has several other Diwali gifting options on their portal. 
 
Notably, Grofers was also first in delivering <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=iPhone+6s">iPhone 6s</a> to consumers on the midnight of its launch day, October 15.

Softbank-backed <keyword id="2466939" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Grofers">Grofers</keyword> has advanced its plan to launch an initial public offer by the end of next year after its profitability path zoomed during the lockdown period, a top official of the company said. Grofers co-founder and CEO <keyword id="2744778" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Albinder-Dhindsa">Albinder Dhindsa</keyword> told that the company started making operational profit in January and expects to become cash positive by the end of this year. "Our path to profitability has accelerated during the lockdown, and after achieving operational profitability in January, we are on track to become EBITDA and cash positive by the end of this year. We are observing market sentiments and aim to hit the capital market by the end of 2021," Dhindsa said. Earlier the company had plans to go public in 2022. The company closed the financial year with a revenue of around Rs 2,500 crore and the valuation of Grofers is estimated to be close to Rs 6,000 crore. "As an organisation, we have always channelled our efforts towards providing value to our customers. And, we will continue to do so by staying true to our brand promise of low prices through our focus on building an efficient supply chain and technology-driven innovations," Dhindsa said. According to the data shared by the company, Grofers shipped 4.4 crore items last month, with 99.7 per cent accuracy and since the lockdown began. It claims to have served 42 lakh households by the end of May. "Our platform continues to witness high demand and we expect this to stabilize at 30 per cent higher than pre-COVID levels. There has also been a 40 per cent increase in basket size as compared to the pre-COVID era. We are seeing 64 per cent first-time online grocery shoppers and 15 per cent first time online shoppers," Dhindsa said. During the lockdown, Grofers opened three new facilities and two more are in the pipeline at Bhiwadi and Lucknow. "We are looking to add 10-15 facilities before the end of this year. We are helping our manufacturing partners with logistics, working capital, and distribution so that we can maintain constant supplies of goods for our customers. We started reverse picks on our own trucks and procured goods from the warehouses of our FMCG partners," Dhindsa said. Currently, Grofers has 10,000 partner stores to run a fast and lean supply chain from manufacturers straight to consumers. "Over the last two months, we have hired over 3,000 people for our supply chain operations, and plan to hire another 2,000 warehouses and delivery staff in the coming months," Dhindsa said. He said that the company has identified and hired delivery and warehouse personnel from the companies operating in industries deeply impacted by the current crisis such as textiles and car rentals. With this funding, its reported valuation is set to be almost $1 billion – just a few steps away from being a unicorn. The series F round also saw participation from new investor, KTB, and along with existing investors – Tiger Global Management and Sequoia Capital. The formerly reclusive Indian unicorn club now has many more members in it. In 2019, three Indian startups have already entered this club, which is exclusive for startups valued at and over $1 billion. Grofers could be the second grocery startup to garner this valuation. Its competitor <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> hit this number in March 2019. Staggering Growth According to the company's statement, over the last two years, Grofers’ has grown by a staggering 800%, to achieve an annual revenue of $400 million. “We are building Grofers for the millions of Indians who cannot buy groceries at low prices due to multiple middlemen and absence of large aggregators,” said Albinder Dhindsa, Co-Founder and CEO of Grofers in a statement. “This latest investment will help scale the company to ensure many more customers can access best quality products at best prices,” he added. Grofers plans to use new funds to expand to new markets across the country. The funding will help the startup build its supply chain network, warehousing infrastructure and private label products, and ensure a steady increase in product range. The investors are banking on growth in the Indian grocery segment which is expected to touch $869 billion by 2023. In March, BigBasket raised funding from its existing investor Alibaba along with South Korean firm, Mirae Asset. Meanwhile, yet another Indian unicorn Swiggy, too announced its foray into grocery segment, with Swiggy stores. The startup <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/start-ups/grofers-to-deploy-500-e-vans-in-fleet-by-december-end-1563802903457.html">announced</a> that its pilots have been successful where its delivery costs went down by 50%. Now, it plans to expand and take it to 500 EVs by December. Grofers is already using EVs in Delhi and Jaipur. It is also a part of electric vehicle freight project called Deliver Electric Delhi by the Delhi government. The startup joins the league of Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart and others, who have declared their plans to switch to EVs for delivery. Swiggy too is piloting the use of Electric Vehicles for its deliveries across 10 cities. It said that the EV adoption can reduce running costs by 40%. Grofers aims to cut costs with electric vehicles, will deploy 500 EVs by December

Food delivery platform Zomato on Tuesday refuted reports that the company is in talks with Gurugram-based grocery delivery platform Grofers to acquire it for nearly $750 million. Flush with funds, Zomato has partnered Grofers for the delivery of essential items – along with other FMCG and grocery stores -- to meet the surge in demand amid social distancing and nationwide lockdown that has now been increased till May 3. In a statement shared with IANS, Zomato said that the company has partnered with Grofers, along with other FMCG companies, local groceries stores and modern retail chains, to pilot its grocery delivery service. "We are not aware of any other conversation with Grofers," a Zomato spokesperson added. After initial hiccups, Zomato has started grocery delivery in over 80 Indian cities with supplying essentials like aata, dal, milk, vegetables and items. According to Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR), companies are looking at creative pivots to stay relevant by pursuing new growth opportunities on the back of the new coronavirus pandemic. "Expanding into near adjacencies is a given for companies, such as Zomato. From Zomato's perspective, a partnership or acquisition of Grofers would provide it a good leg-up in its competition with Swiggy to win big in the grocery delivery segment," Ram told IANS. Online food and grocery retail is expected to touch $10.5 billion by 2023, according to a recent report by Bengaluru-based market consulting firm Redseer. Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal who is bullish on online delivery of essential items, has said that their delivery network in the country is only second to India Post. "We we are putting in every effort to make sure that we put it to good use to serve the community. We'd like to thank the government authorities, grocery stores, FMCG companies &amp; other start-ups that have come forward to partner with us and support the community in this endeavor," Goyal said recently. Zomato is currently valued at nearly $3.2 billion while Grofers' valuation is around $650 million. Menlo Park, California-based Sequoia Capital is a common investor in both the delivery platforms. Zomato in January acquired Uber's Food delivery business in India – UberEats -- in an all-stock deal for nearly Rs 2,500 crore. Uber has 9.99 per cent stake in the Goyal-led food delivery platform. Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, the largest investor in Grofers, is also likely to pump in around $100 million in Zomato. Media reports said last week that Zomato has raised $5 million from British investment manager Baillie Gifford's Pacific Horizon Investment Trust. Zomato earlier raised $150 million from existing investor Ant Financial, an affiliate of Alibaba. The company has also launched the ‘Feed the Daily Wager' initiative to support and ensure meals for workers at construction sites, shops, restaurants, delivery staff, and local transport systems who earn on daily basis. As part of this campaign, the food delivery giant is providing ration kits to the daily wager communities that are currently unable to support their family's food requirement.
