The list is endless. <h2><keyword id="21384253" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zepto-CEO" source="keywords">Zepto CEO</keyword> compares it with Zomato</h2> Zepto, which is newer when compared to Swiggy and Blinkit, is a popular choice in many areas. And its CEO and co-founder <keyword id="22736526" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadit-Palica" source="keywords">Aadit Palica</keyword> feels that the company is in the stage where <keyword id="19904608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Amazon" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> was in 1990s or early 2000s. While speaking at the Moneycontrol Startup Conclave 2024 on Friday, Palicha drew a bold comparison between his company’s current trajectory and that of Amazon during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He added that with the right execution, Zepto could potentially achieve a valuation between $50 billion and $80 billion, positioning itself as a leader in the global quick commerce sector. With that being said, Palicha is keenly aware that success isn’t guaranteed. “It is largely just execution,” he noted, talking about the importance of flawless operational strategy in turning potential into reality. He also acknowledged the history of companies that had the right ingredients for success but failed to execute, highlighting Zepto’s commitment to staying focused on its core business for the foreseeable future. Over the past year, Zepto has been on an aggressive fundraising streak, securing significant investments that have fuelled its growth. In August 2023, Zepto raised $231 million at a valuation of $1.4 billion, marking its entry into the unicorn club. But that was just the beginning. The startup recently closed another funding round, pulling in $665 million and boosting its valuation to $3.6 billion. The momentum doesn’t stop there. Zepto has attracted further interest from investors, with discussions underway for an additional $250 million in funding. This new round, which could grow to as much as $400 million, is expected to push the company’s valuation to around $4.6 billion. <h2>When Palicha said Zepto will be bigger than D-Mart </h2> This isn’t the first time that Palicha has made a bold prediction about Zepto. Last month, Palicha had said that Zepto would be bigger than D-Mart in the near future. Speaking at the JIIF Foundation Day event in Delhi, Palicha had pointed out that despite D-Mart’s impressive $30 billion valuation, the retail behemoth is currently only 4.5 times larger than Zepto in terms of sales. "D-Mart is a $30 billion company, and they are only 4.5 times our size in sales. If we maintain our current pace, growing 2-3 times each year, we could potentially surpass them in the next 18-24 months," Palicha had said.

I'm excited to be part of that team that is revolutionising commerce in India.” Kaivalya Vohra, Co-founder and CTO, Zepto, said, “Ankit joined us about a year ago and in that time he has built strong rigour within the fulfilment charter. We've been able to ship world class technology over the last year; everything from building our entire last mile stack in-house to building and rolling out a warehouse management system in &lt;6 months, and many other needle-moving initiatives.” With 13+ years of product experience in companies such as Flipkart, Delhivery and Infra.Market, Ankit joined Zepto in August 2022 as SVP of Product to lead the entire fulfilment charter, spanning the entirety of supply chain, last mile and finance tech. Ankit has also been a founder in the past, with Orinko, trying to build India’s first ever fruits and vegetables consumer brand. With Ankit’s elevation, he will now own product end-to-end, from consumer to supply chain and last mile. The quick commerce player has its job cut out after it became a unicorn last month. Zepto is India’s 84th unicorn with its latest fundraise. India had 83 unicorns at the start of the year but several startups have lost that tag with down rounds and cuts in valuation. The quick commerce player, started by two teenagers two years ago, has raised $200 million through a Series E round at a valuation of $1.4 billion. The latest round is entirely primary. The agenda is to build a good capital base ahead of a potential listing in 2025. With this round, the startup has brought on board a bunch of new investors. This round was led by StepStone Group and this investment into Zepto is their first direct investment in an Indian company). Additionally, Goodwater Capital, a consumer-focused venture capital firm based in California, joined the round as a new investor. Notably, existing investors, like Nexus Venture Partners, Glade Brook Capital, Lachy Groom and more, doubled down on their investments in Zepto with meaningful follow-on investments.

Business Insider has verified his employment history.I joined McKinsey right after graduating from my masters in India.I spent the next three years with the company in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-us-from-india-big-tech-changed-me-2024-7">India</a>, then moved to the company's office in Dubai for two years, and then to Amsterdam. Getting a chance to live and work overseas was a dream.A little while after moving to Amsterdam, I decided that I had had enough consulting. The constant travel was also getting tiring. I left McKinsey and worked for the Dutch bank ING as a corporate strategist for over a year before moving to the logistics company Wayfair in 2019. I was one of the first employees in the Berlin office, tasked with building the company's international business, which I still think was the most challenging but fulfilling period of my career.<h2 id="893dd95a-7f9c-4453-bde6-beb32c14f608">Life in Europe</h2>Things were going well from a lifestyle point of view, too.I enjoyed being done with work by 5 or 6 p.m. and having the rest of the day to myself. Many of my friends back home have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-tech-job-launch-startup-now-make-400000-2024-4">built startups</a> or venture capital careers. I wanted to be part of India's growth story.I also felt like there was no career growth for me in Europe. In India, I had a big network from India's top tech and management schools and because of my time at McKinsey.I also wanted to be close to family, especially since my parents are getting older.My inflection point was realizing in mid-2023 that my career had stagnated because I was at a senior level and was finding it difficult to grow. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukrainian-women-train-blue-collar-jobs-workforce-gap-war-electrician-2024-8">war in Ukraine</a> and other macroeconomic factors like inflation also affected my decision.I worked with a professional coach before making a firm decision. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/took-sabbatical-returned-work-better-employeee-2024-9">I traveled around Latin America</a>, and being in a new environment really sealed the deal for me.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-job-at-meta-bali-trip-moved-into-childhood-home-2024-8">I quit my job</a> and finally moved back to India in May.<h2 id="93bdcf9f-12d3-4eba-9b17-bc4210b5a753">Adjusting back</h2>After <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-uk-life-biggest-differences-after-moving-home-space-2024-7">a decade of living away</a>, there are things I'm having to get used to again.I'm still adapting to the pollution, the traffic, and the sheer number of people. The number of cars and two-wheelers on the road has exploded, which makes driving and parking a lot more stressful.But some things have also become much more convenient since I left 10 years ago.I remember having to call a restaurant if I ever wanted to eat in, but India now has food and grocery delivery services that promise to deliver any food or household items in under 10 minutes.It's a lot easier to find and afford domestic support, and I have a cook. For my friends with newborn children, live-in nannies are available. These feel like huge luxuries compared to Europe, where my immigrant friends struggled with childcare — their parents were happy to help but could only stay in Germany for 90 days at a time.I'm also able to afford an all-inclusive apartment complex, where I have easy access to a pool, a gym, and a supermarket.I'm volunteering as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-vc-wants-see-5-traits-new-founders-fundraising-antler-2024-8">mentor for startups</a> at an incubator at my alma mater and have noticed a big mindset shift among people in their early 20s. When I graduated with my engineering degree, my classmates and I thought our only career options were to join a company, study abroad for a master's, or pursue an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management.But the students now are a lot more willing to take risks and dive into entrepreneurship.I'm currently on a career break. I want to familiarize myself with India again and then hope to build a venture of my own in the next few years.

I moved from India to Europe for work and was living my dream. 10 years later, I walked away from it all.

A report by StrideOne, a tech-enabled NBFC, titled ‘The Startup Economy Report 2022’ says that 25% of gig workers surveyed reported an over 50% rise in their monthly income as compared to their previous mode of livelihood – in the last one year. An overall growth of 150% was recorded in the payments/salaries to gig workers between October 2021 and September 2022, the report said. Majority of the gig workers are engaged in retail trade and sales which includes fast commerce like food and beverage, grocery, medicines delivery etc. Around 56% of the gig workers surveyed previously had full-time employment. “Startups are limiting their hiring of permanent employees. Gig workers have begun to replace these permanent employees,” the report said. The number of companies who shifted to a semi-gig workforce model has increased by 15% since October 2021. The potential of gig workers can grow if online retail expands across the country. The report predicts that the penetration of online retail was 5% in 2019, and is expected to grow to 11% by 2024. Non-farm sectors of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> have the potential to add over 90 million gig jobs in the longer term, the report predicts. As of now, the <keyword id="3080230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-economy" source="Orion">gig economy</keyword> constitutes 1.5% of the total workforce in India and is expected to expand to 23.5 million by 2024 constituting 4% of the workforce. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Startup ecosystem of India" comment="subhead" text="Startup ecosystem of India"><keyword id="15794501" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup-ecosystem-of-India" source="Orion">Startup ecosystem of India</keyword></cmsannotation> The number of jobs created by the startup ecosystem of India, which is said to be the third largest in the world, grew by 78% CAGR between 2017 and 2022. It is further projected to grow at a CAGR of 24% from 2022-27. The ecosystem altogether created over 2 lakh jobs this year, according to the report. However, several startups like Byju’s, Udaan laid off several employees from its workforce as a part of their retrenchment due to funding winter. “The rapid growth phase and maturity of the ecosystem have unlocked tremendous appetite for scalability, alternate funding options, expansion into the global market and the capacity to enable millions of jobs. This meteoric rise of startups has made India the third largest startup ecosystem in the world and has significantly impacted the Indian economy showcasing the ability to contribute approximately 4-5% to the gross domestic product (GDP) of India,” said Ishpreet Singh Gandhi, founder, StrideOne. Sectors like textile, apparel and logistics however retain the title of being the biggest job creators in the country. The textile industry is said to be the second largest employer in India, which has given direct employment to 5 crore people, and 10 crore people in allied industries. Whereas, logistics sector currently employs 22 million people and is estimated to contribute 11% to the overall GDP of the country. A quarter of Indian gig workers’ salaries grew by 50% in the last one year

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Priya Bajaj and Darshan Shah left India to move to the US a few years ago.</li><li>Despite some initial adjustments, they say corporate America provided a work-life balance they didn't have before.</li></ul>When Priya Bajaj received an offer to transfer from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google">Google</a> in India to the US, she thought she would try it out for six months — she didn't expect to be here seven years later."I had no reason to move here because my whole family, everyone was back in India," Bajaj said. "And I was also dating him," she said about her now-husband.Bajaj's husband, Darshan Shah, worked as a Sony Pictures producer in Mumbai when she received the offer. He said he was happy with his life in India so the two agreed to do <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dating-long-distance-relationship-online-success-married-switzerland-2024-7">long distance</a> while she tried out the new job.Bajaj first landed in the US in January 2017 and said she didn't adjust until about a year later. At that point, she and Shah got married, and she convinced him to join her in the US.<h2 id="612eb124-665d-47fe-baca-f3820f7bbf8d">Corporate America was a cultural shock</h2>When they <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-woman-moved-us-shares-what-surprised-her-2024-7">first moved to the US,</a> Bajaj and Shah struggled with adapting to living together, going through the immigration process, and finding stable work.After relocating, Shah searched for a video production role in the media and entertainment industry but found the market for those jobs difficult without local contacts. He ultimately shifted his focus to video content production and marketing in tech and worked at a couple of startups. He then took a contract role at Google before landing a job at Indeed.Bajaj said Shah had to adjust to the interview process. She said interviews in India focus on past experience, while in the US, you are expected to sell yourself and talk about what you can bring to the table.Even though Bajaj had a job secured, she also struggled when she first moved."The first six, seven months were not that easy," Bajaj said, adding that from a cultural perspective "working here was very, very difficult."Bajaj and Shah both felt that took time to grasp the cultural nuances of corporate America. In India, she said work place was very much a "community" where her coworkers were her best friends. Bajaj and Shah said they both had to learn the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-colorado-mountains-mistake-left-2024-3">boundaries of professionalism in the US</a>.<h2 id="965978c3-8cd9-4e7f-9a82-a0b20e4b5c6c">The lifestyle of a 9-5 opened up opportunities for them</h2>Despite the initial struggle, Bajaj said once she adjusted, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-us-from-india-big-tech-changed-me-2024-7">she wanted to stay in the US and see where her career could go.</a>Bajaj said that in India, people tend to go above and beyond and the general instinct in the workplace is to always say yes, especially for those early in their career. Many Indians who work corporate jobs also have cooking and cleaning staff to help with basic house tasks, which also allows them to work longer hours, she said."You can do 18 hours of work in India because all you are doing is working," Bajaj said. "Your chores are taken care of, your food is ready. You don't have to take care of any, cleaning, cooking groceries."Bajaj and Shah said they now have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-working-in-bengaluru-the-silicon-valley-of-india-2023-7">more control of their time.</a> Shah was able to focus more on his health because he had more time outside of work and Bajaj has the opportunity to do things like be on a board, speak at an event, and create content.<h2 id="6bf2fea9-6951-4236-b575-98d942c4cb5d">Moving means starting over again — and it's not for everyone</h2>Bajaj and Shah's move to the US opened up opportunities for them outside their full-time jobs. Bajaj and Shah used their free time to start a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.itsokyaar.com/">platform</a> for South Asian immigrants called It's Ok Yaar, which means "It's okay, friend.""We're hustlers," Bajaj said. "We like to do a lot of things other than our full time jobs."Bajaj said if she hadn't had an opportunity in the US, she may have tried out another country. She and Shah enjoy being pushed out of their comfort zones.But moving to the US isn't for everyone.Bajaj warns that navigating the job market requires networking and being able to handle rejections. Bajaj said that if you already have a comfortable life and "made it" in your home country, you should ask yourself if you're ready to start all over again.

<ul><li><keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">Online grocery</keyword> segment will grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword>. </li><li>Today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India. </li><li>Startups in the online grocery sector have raised $665.70 million in funding in 2019 so far.</li></ul>The Indian online grocery segment is growing fast and how. Currently the online food and grocery retail holds a miniscule part of online retail with only 0.2% penetration. But it is predicted to grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and BigBasket. The market size of this segment will also expand to $10.5 billion, the report predicts. The customers’ trust on online shopping along with the growing presence of e-grocery players will drive this growth in the sector, added the report. “The online grocery segment has been one of the fastest-growing e-commerce verticals in India and will continue to flourish in both metro and non-metro cities in the years to come,” said Hari Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, bigbasket. Online grocery vs E-commerce in India As Indians are used to visiting the kirana store in the next lane, online grocery has been growing slowly since onset in 2010. In the past few years however it picked up speed. As the number of e-commerce users grew it had a slow but steady effect on online grocery purchases. From a barely any presence in 2010, today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India.

A big share of this will come from Tier 2 and 3 cities. Grofers co-founder Dhindsa believes that the next big thing in e-grocery is increasing penetration of e-commerce in tier-2 markets and amongst lower SECs (socio-economic classification) in metros. “E-grocery will bring more shoppers into e-commerce as a whole and already 15% of our new users every month are first time online shoppers. Growing disposable income of the consumers in Tier II markets and the adoption of 4G has already laid a strong foundation for the next wave of growth for e-commerce,” he said.

The local kirana store or India’s largest retail chain, all of them are keen on getting a piece of the <keyword id="1410674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-grocery-delivery" source="Orion">online grocery delivery</keyword> market. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Most of the online <keyword id="2709620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-delivery" source="Orion">grocery delivery</keyword> hinges on timing which is why quick commerce companies are walking away with a lion’s share of the pie. “Grocery shopping in India’s major cities is set to undergo a never-seen-before tec(h)tonic shift led by quick commerce platforms,” said a report by JM Financial. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. With this round, Bigbasket’s valuation has more than doubled to reach a <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/bigbasket-joins-unicorn-club-with-150-mn-funding-valuation-jumps-two-fold-119032801319_1.html">reported </a>$2.3 billion. The latest round of funding was led by the startup’s existing investor Alibaba while South Korean firm Mirae Asset joined its group of investors. With growing competition in the space, Bigbasket has been fast looking at ways of expansion.
