The same share of the state's voters opted to hike the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026 and mandate some paid sick leave. A slim majority also voted to enshrine abortion rights.In Alaska, where <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elections.alaska.gov/enr/">Trump seems poised to trounce Kamala Harris</a>, a measure to hike the minimum wage to $15 by 2027 and mandate paid sick leave <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/elections/results/2024/11/05/alaska-measure-1/">also looks like it's on track to win</a>.In <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-elections/arizona-ballot-measures">Arizona</a>, a measure to allow employers to reduce base pay for tipped workers did not pass, and voters similarly voted to enshrine abortion rights.It's happened before: In 2020, Florida voters wholeheartedly embraced Trump — and voted to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-minimum-wage-rise-vote-amendment-15-tipped-employees-workers-2020-11">hike the minimum wage to $15 by 2026</a>.It's further proof that this election really was all about the economy."People are right now still feeling the effects of high inflation," Yannet Lathrop, a senior researcher and policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, said, adding, "When they have before them an opportunity to raise the wage of themselves or their family members or friends, they are going to choose to do that because they still are feeling the effects of high inflation. "David Cooper, the director of the Economic Analysis and Research Network at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, told BI there's been a "real sea change" in people's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-labor-market-federal-minimum-wage-raise-small-business-2024-8">understanding of the impact of hikes</a>. Both he and Lathrop have observed a move away from the belief that higher minimum wages would lead to fewer jobs and toward <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-a-15-minimum-wage-would-mean-businesses-workers-employment-2021-1">research</a> showing that pay hikes mean higher pay with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-fed-raising-the-minimum-wage-doesnt-kill-jobs-2019-9">minimal job loss</a>."Raising the minimum wage almost always has bipartisan support except among elected Republican officials. Swing voters tend to vote for both right-wing and left-wing ideologies. Brian Kemp said Georgia will be the "electric mobility capital of the world."</li></ul>Electric vehicle investments are surging in Georgia.According to a recent Wells Fargo <a target="_blank" href="https://wellsfargo.bluematrix.com/links2/html/2379e487-7800-433a-95b9-735589c4e1a1">report</a>, Georgia has received more private investments in electric vehicle and battery manufacturing than any other state, with just over $23 billion to date.Jackie Benson, an economist at Wells Fargo, told Business Insider that the state is poised to be a hub for EVs because of its business-friendly environment, robust population growth, and federal and state incentives attracting companies to the state.Since 2022, the Peach State has added over 30,000 clean energy jobs, more than any other state, according to a June <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/new-study-inflation-reduction-act-has-created-over-30000-georgia-jobs/">study</a> by Climate Power, a strategic communications firm. Brian Kemp said that Georgia would become the "electric mobility capital of the world," per the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-is-creating-its-first-ever-climate-plan-heres-what-to-expect/RKDANAY5DBCJLHYCUXVYCUDB5Q/">Atlanta-Journal Constitution</a>. So far, it's looking promising.Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are a part of the Battery Belt and have received nearly $77 billion in private investment in EV battery manufacturing to date, according to an August <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atlasevhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/2024.08_Atlas-EV-Investment-Brief.pdf">report</a> by Atlas Public Policy.It's not just southern states: Michigan leads the nation in capacity for electric vehicle battery manufacturing, but Georgia is second, according to a January <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.edf.org/media/analysis-finds-us-electric-vehicle-battery-manufacturing-track-meet-demand">report</a> by the Environmental Defense Fund, a nonprofit advocacy group.The state has also greatly benefited from federal investments in green energy and electric vehicle manufacturing and infrastructure. The Biden Administration <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/17/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-private-and-public-sector-investments-for-affordable-electric-vehicles/">aims</a> for 50% of new vehicles in 2030 to be EVs, and investment in green energy in Georgia is partly a result of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Georgia-Fact-Sheet.pdf">allocated</a> over $175 million toward the EV battery supply chain in Georgia and $135 million over five years toward infrastructure for EV charging stations in Georgia. In February, Hyundai <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/hyundai-announces-new-production-start-date-at-metaplant-america-during-hyundai-day-in-georgia-302071754.html#:~:text=Hyundai%20Motor%20Group%20is%20investing,that%20will%20employ%203%2C500%20workers.">announced</a> over $7 billion in investment in production facilities in Georgia. The company estimates their investments in Georgia will create nearly 40,000 jobs in the state."The Hyundai investment specifically has boosted Georgia's profile in terms of EV production on the national stage," Benson said.The Inflation Reduction Act also created a $7,500 tax credit for new EVs for both consumers and businesses and incentivized efforts to boost domestic EV supply chains.In May, Kia <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/u-s-federal-manufacturing-incentives-working-for-georgia-kia-begins-ev9-production-in-west-point/">announced</a> the production of its first American-made EV at its production facility in West Point, Georgia, enabling the company to take advantage of the tax credit.Manufacturing accounts for 10% of Georgia's gross state product, which is its economic output, and construction accounts for 4%, according to Wells Fargo.Investments in EV and battery manufacturing will boost job growth and output in both of these sectors, Benson said.While government, health care, and leisure are the leading industry drivers in Georgia, investments in manufacturing are poised to boost the state's overall economic growth.<h2 id="fb9799f7-223c-4b7b-9f9e-5b994c7dac21">Georgia transplants are helping fuel economic growth in the state</h2>Georgia's real GDP outpaced the nation in the first quarter of the year, at 2.3% and 1.4%, respectively. In seven of the last 10 years, the state's GDP has outpaced the national average, according to Wells Fargo.Strong population growth remains a tailwind for Georgia's economic growth and EV industry, Benson said.Between 2021 and 2022, there were 327,795 people who moved into Georgia, according to data from the Census Bureau. The Peach State had the fifth most new residents during that time, following Florida, Texas, California, and North Carolina.New state residents means more consumers at stores, more homebuyers and renters, and more demand for goods in Georgia, fueling economic activity.Among those people who moved from another US state into Georgia, nearly 26,000 came from California, and more than 23,000 from both Texas and North Carolina, according to data from the Census Bureau.The biggest influx of new residents in Georgia came from outside the US. Between 2021 and 2022, just over 60,000 people from abroad moved to Georgia, per Census Bureau data.Benson said single-family construction has recently scaled up in the state, in line with its robust population growth.Benson said the scale-up in single-family construction has helped shore up construction employment. The three-month moving average for job growth in construction in the state was up 0.1% year-over-year in July, the report noted.Unemployment in Georgia remains below the national average and is only 40 basis points higher than its historic low in 2022, Benson said."Nationwide, we're seeing builders pull back on single-family construction for multiple reasons," Benson said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Angel Hutchinson, a South African au pair, has cared for one child in Maryland since 2019.</li><li>Hutchinson has worked for four wealthy families since 2015, facing both challenges and perks.</li></ul>Angel Hutchinson, 31, was born and raised in Durban, South Africa, but now lives in Maryland, where she's worked as an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/au-pair-care-vs-nanny-childcare-2024-1">au pair</a> for almost five years.Hutchinson's current employers are the fourth wealthy family she's worked for stateside since September 2015. She's parlayed those experiences into a<a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@angel__0209"> successful side hustle on TikTok</a>, helping other would-be au pairs follow in her footsteps.She told Business Insider that the difference between an au pair and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nanny-share-benefits-less-expensive-childcare-social-interaction-2024-3">nanny</a> is in the scope of the role. "An au pair is like a cousin who lives with you and is part of the family — when they go out for dinner, you all go out for dinner," she said. "I'm the extra eyes for the parents."Hutchinson has had negative and positive experiences — in some families, she felt unwelcome and overworked, but in others, she's been whisked off on snowboarding trips and vacations in Puerto Rico.<h2 id="0711039e-5cc2-478c-afd6-4a14ece3c8d4">The job is quite low-paying, but there are perks</h2>Overseas applicants will likely be recruited under the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-us-student-visa-work-microsoft-green-card-2024-9">J-1 visa</a> rules. "It doesn't count as a job. It's more like a cultural exchange program, often below minimum wage. It is peanuts," she said.She said au pairs are not allowed to be required to work nights, in particular, but will typically work 45 hours per week and a maximum of 10 hours a day.Board and lodging are covered, but wages are considered pocket money: the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.aupairusa.org/au-pair-cost/#:~:text=The%20minimum%20weekly%20stipend%20for,stipend%20of%20%24225.00%20per%20week."> State Department has set a current minimum of $225.00 per week</a>. Some more seasoned au pairs, she said, make $300-350.She earns more than this because she negotiated a higher than minimum wage. "Au pairs are allowed to negotiate for more; however, most families pay this because au pairs are afraid to speak up."<h2 id="eb5135dd-4d4c-4edd-a1e2-e2f8a28605cb">The application process is rigorous but straightforward</h2>Hutchinson studied theology and planned to go into ministry full-time. "My family felt I was wasting my life by coming to live with another family, but I was frustrated with life at that moment. I was in a relationship but wasn't sure if I wanted to get married yet. So I was like, OK, I'm going to find out."Hutchinson's interest in becoming an au pair was sparked by her college dean, who talked fondly of her experiences as an au pair in America two decades earlier. "She still spoke with her family, who would visit her."She filled out the forms and paid fees to one of the many agencies she found online — around 1300 ZAR, or about $70. She had to have a driver's license and a high school education and undergo medical checks.Once accepted, she was asked to upload a profile, including a video, which interested families could browse. Typically, they would video chat with a potential au pair from afar before hiring one for a 12-month position.<h2 id="431f484e-69df-4fc8-91de-6300511c1208">Hutchinson was unhappy with her first two families</h2>Hutchinson's first employers didn't ring alarm bells until she landed in America. "I remember getting a tour of the house, and when I was done, they told me to go unpack my stuff in my room. I closed the door and bawled my eyes out," she said. "I just felt like something was off."This couple were wealthy Indian-Americans in New Jersey; the father was a pharmaceutical VP, and the mother a medical director. There were two children, aged 13 and 6, where the latter was Hutchinson's prime focus. "It felt like they were unprepared for me or had forgotten I was coming in the three months since we last spoke."The main issue was a misunderstanding of her role, stretching the definition of childcare. "I had to water the plants — because they were the kid's favorite. I had to dust the cupboard — because the kid's doll was on top of it."She also struggled to connect with the kids, as they would speak Bengali to their parents. She quickly asked for a rematch (au pair speak for resigning). "They said you can't go because we've already had two girls leave before you."A week later, Hutchinson's father died, and she was offered compassionate leave to return to South Africa for the funeral. Once home, she rematched there, returning three weeks later to a different family, but not a better situation.This was another New Jersey-based family, with two school-age kids of 5 and 8, a mother who worked as a deputy principal, and a father who ran a tech business. The mom had described her kids to Hutchinson as "having a lot of energy."The truth was more complicated: Her special needs kids were in therapy and rarely able to play with other au pairs' children at the playground. The daughter was particularly difficult for Hutchinson to care for.<h2 id="43f3c48b-429a-4db1-b767-bc0a04acbab1">The third family was a better fit</h2>By January 2016, Hutchinson was primed to return to South Africa, but she tried to rematch one last time. This family proved life-changing. "I still visit them to this day," she said.This Colorado-based couple, both anesthesiologists, had a 9-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. They lived in the mountains and drove a nine-seater Denali. "We went on vacation a lot. They're a snowboarding family, so they taught me, and we went camping."She never felt pressured to work late and could come and go as she pleased. Hutchinson felt very much at home in the Rockies. "The people were so welcoming in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-culture-shocks-after-moving-from-italy-to-colorado-2024-8">Colorado</a> — it's by far the best place I lived."<h2 id="bcc44968-fb3f-4d6d-9063-520f63ed6167">She went back to South Africa, but it wasn't a forever move</h2>After that stay, she went home. Two years later, after spending time in South Africa looking after a boy for a German family in her neighborhood, she decided to come back to the States.A different, wealthy family spotted her video and asked if she'd consider coming to live with them in Maryland. The mother was a thoracic surgeon, and the father was a VP. They had one young child, barely 6 at the time.The moment she arrived in September 2019, Hutchinson felt at home. "They were overprepared, trying to ensure I had the best time ever."Almost five years later, Hutchinson is so settled with them that she's more like a surrogate daughter. They buy her a pair of the family's matching pajamas at Christmas, and she's always invited to family gatherings. "The only time I don't do something with them is if I don't want to."She also drives a brand-new VW Jetta. "In other families, you have to share a car to go to the store or have to ask. This one said 'We bought this car for you to use. You can have freedom and a sense of independence. Come and go when you want.'"She doesn't work weekends, which frees her up to socialize. "All the people I now call my best friends are Americans I met at church." She's applied via her visa, this time an EB-3, or skilled worker.She's still waiting on paperwork, but once her au pair time concludes, she plans to pursue a different path. An au pair for wealthy families shares the highs and lows of the unpredictable job

It didn't go well.She had returned from vacation and was unhappy with my performance. I thought everything was fine, seeing as I'd received positive feedback from other senior staff.I'd worked in a digital content role at a Fortune 500 company for under a year and questioned whether it was right for me the entire time.After being laid off last July, I freelanced for a few months but felt pressure from people close to me to get a full-time job. I also craved the security and permanency I thought a large corporation would offer.I landed my digital content job in November 2023. Working in a corporate setting gave me a daily routine, a regular payday, and private healthcare, but I felt unfulfilled. The job description had included writing, but shifting business priorities quickly changed that. Also, my relationship with my manager had never taken off.I felt stuck, creatively stunted, and climbing the corporate ladder in an industry I didn't care about.<h2 id="ef0fcce8-d166-41f5-9a03-22c291bf0c21">I deeply related to the themes in Charli XCX's 'Brat'</h2>On that early June evening, after being reprimanded by my manager, I sat chain-smoking on my balcony and put on a new album I'd been looking forward to.Drained, I let the music of Charli XCX's "Brat" wash over me."Sympathy is a Knife," a track about spiraling self-doubt, was instantly relatable. The album's final song, "365," described a never-ending party and reminded me I deserve to have fun.These contrasting songs perfectly reflected my current existence.On Fridays, I'd go out with friends and have a great time, but I was filled with a sense of dread when Sunday hit. I felt like two different people: my true, extroverted self on the weekends and when I was writing and, mid-week, my anxious and unhappy shadow self.I'd tried putting everything into my new role. I'd tried not caring so much. Neither had worked. I'd told friends about my dissatisfaction, and they all said to do what made me happy.At that point, happiness — without a follow-up of guilt and dread — was an emotion I hadn't felt for a long time."Brat" was the perfect soundtrack for a fun-filled summer I desperately wanted. The album is centered on living life to the fullest. If I wanted to experience that, I needed to quit my job.<h2 id="b689773f-cd56-4fe4-a7af-1d73b9b37215">It wasn't just about partying</h2>Charli XCX<a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@charlixcx/video/7386786386298342688?is_from_webapp=1&amp;web_id=7326907923145197099"> described</a> a "brat" on her personal TikTok as someone "who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile."This was my "brat" moment.Writing has always been my passion, but I'd never seriously considered doing it full-time. I'd always worked in content or marketing roles because I was worried about financial security.At the beginning of this job, I'd hardly freelanced, putting all my energy into my new role. As time passed and I grew increasingly unhappy, I spent more free time writing, desperate to feel a sense of purpose.My parents agreed with my decision to quit. They'd never seen me so unhappy, so it felt easier to make what seemed like an extreme decision with them in my corner.With decent pay from the corporate role, I'd saved around £6,000, around $7,800, to live on as I tried to build a career as a writer.I handed in my notice the following Monday and felt instant relief. That day, a senior team member told me they'd never seen me so happy.<h2 id="9c1a13c6-42fe-4732-9a53-b10a63eed773">I had a half "brat" summer</h2>"Brat" was everywhere this summer. Brands and celebrities, including Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, co-opted lime-green memes with lowercase black writing. National news outlets had to write explainers titled "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/jul/16/brat-summer-is-the-long-era-of-clean-living-finally-over">What is 'brat'</a>?"My friends knew about my work saga and laughed when I explained my "Brat" and cigarette-assisted epiphany. But when I told them I'd quit, I could see the shock on their faces.I was leaving a company to work for myself during a cost-of-living crisis. They were concerned.Their worries made me question my decision, but ultimately, I thought I'd never be as unhappy working for myself as I was in that job.My finish date fell just before a trip to California in July, closely followed by a visit to a friend's home in Turkey. I needed time off to regroup and relax. I returned feeling motivated to put everything into my writing career. I was strict with my weekday schedule and constantly "on." On the weekends, I could let go and have fun, knowing my week was spent doing work I cared about.Without a monthly paycheck, I've had to be more responsible with money. Some months were harder, with weddings and festivals, but I'm learning.<h2 id="30337906-ea1f-4a3c-84b5-620f3eaf98a5">I don't regret quitting for a 'brat summer'</h2>I haven't regretted my decision once.Although the album was the catalyst for my quitting, I'd been unhappy at work for a long time. As a freelancer, I now work when I finally feel fulfilled.I've worked harder in the last three months than ever before. Some work days start at 6 a.m. and end at 10 p.m. I sometimes work on weekends, and some days I have nothing to do. But it's work I love to do.Would I have quit my job if "Brat" hadn't been released? Eventually, but it would've likely been later when my mental health had deteriorated even more. The album felt like a sign, and knowing it led to being the happiest I've ever been in my career, I'm grateful that it came when it did.Now, I work shifts for a newspaper, write articles about topics I care about, and, as of next month, write while traveling the world.My work may be unpredictable and the financial shift from a salaried role has been a learning experience. But I have the freedom to enjoy the work I love, which is all that matters to me.

Matt Gaetz</a> for passing a continuing resolution to keep the government from shutting down.Less than a year later, as now-speaker Johnson tried to keep the government functioning, he was hounded by several of his Republican colleagues who were also pushing him to <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/RepAndyBiggsAZ/status/1742598961876140179?s=20">shut the government down intentionally,</a> this time in the name of border security.Johnson was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/house-congress-avert-government-shutdown-votes-2024-3">forced to rely on Democrats</a> across the aisle to keep the government afloat and funded — but not without a cost.As the House voted on the funding bill on March 22, GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate Johnson as speaker, later telling a scrum of reporters it was time to "find a new speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority."She did not have any replacements in mind. And given how traumatizing finding a replacement for McCarthy was, Republican representatives <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-motion-to-vacate-threat-republicans-2024-3">don't seem too eager</a> to go down that tumultuous road again any time soon.There's a pattern at play here.With such a narrow majority in the House, a handful of firebrand Republicans have repeatedly thrown wrenches into the gears of the Capitol to get what they want: From holding out on electing McCarthy as speaker in January 2023 until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kevin-mccarthy-enabled-his-own-downfall-in-january-concessions-2023-10">House rules were changed</a> to their liking to threatening to prevent millions of government employees from receiving paychecks in a shutdown, the strategy has at times been successful.But that's clearly not a fruitful work environment for Johnson, the man tasked with leading and fundraising for the increasingly dysfunctional House of Representatives.Even if Johnson is removed and replaced, there's little incentive for Greene, Gaetz, or any other disruptive Republican representatives not to make his replacement miserable, just as they did their predecessors.So what can Johnson and Republican leadership do at this point to fix this?The short answer is: not much.Joining leadership well after the House rules were established, it's difficult for him — or any other GOP speaker — to implement any changes until the next congressional session.At this point, Johnson's best bet to keep the government functioning — and as he's done in the past few months — is to continue to rely on Democrats to get critical votes passed, which isn't the most politically advantageous move.But when the alternative is millions of military personnel and federal workers going without pay before a politically charged election in November, it may be the only solution Johnson has.

Naukri pegs it as high as 27% with the EV sector being the star. “According to the Global Green Skills Report 2023 by LinkedIn, India has seen a 140% jump in auto industry workers with Electric Vehicle(EV) skills from 2018-23. Krishnan says that the rapid industrial expansion outpaces curriculum updates in colleges, resulting in a shortage of skilled talent. Most of the expertise that’s needed to drive India’s green transformation requires strong foundational STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. “Currently, the key qualifications needed for such (green) roles would be an engineering degree with 5-10 years’ experience within the sustainability sector and experience of sustainability certification schemes,” says Ghatpande. In fact, most of the jobs require engineering degrees — both standalone or specialised to environment science. “The common degrees are Environmental Science or Engineering for roles in environmental conservation and management. Renewable Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy Studies for careers in the renewable energy sector. Agricultural Science or Sustainable Agriculture for those interested in sustainable farming practices,” says Jaideep P Kewalramani, head of employability business and COO, TeamLease EdTech. Green certifications in vogue On top of the basic degrees, there are certifications as well. Green Building Certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for sustainable construction and architecture. Certifications in Environmental Management like ISO 14001, for professionals focusing on sustainability within organisations. For now, organisations which quickly need a lot of employees with green skills are developing talent by upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce on green technologies. “Also there is an active collaboration with academia in curating programs to create talent pipelines,” says Kumar. Added to that several online learning platforms offer tailored certificate courses and modules to help professionals kickstart their careers in the EV industry. “These courses often feature industry-relevant curricula, real-world projects, live mentorship by experts, and expert-led masterclasses,” says Krishnan. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Big tech companies have pulled back on PERM applications, often the first step to a green card.</li><li>Huge layoffs by Google, Amazon, Meta and other tech companies have made the process harder. </li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/big-tech">Big tech</a> companies have backed off <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/america-immigration-needs-reform-losing-workers-2023-3">green card</a> applications in a big way because the process has become tougher and there's less competition for talent.This situation is making it harder for foreign tech workers to stay in the US, and it may mean overseas candidates have to search far beyond Silicon Valley and New York City for jobs in the industry.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-requests-update-immigration-rules-hire-top-ai-talent-2024-5">Google</a> stopped so-called PERM applications in January 2023, the same month it laid off 12,000 employees. PERM is a certification process run by the Department of Labor. It aims to ensure that admitting foreign workers into the country doesn't impact US workers' job opportunities, wages, or working conditions. It's often the first step toward a green card.Earlier this year, Googlers were told the company wouldn't restart the PERM process until at least Q1 2025, according to a current employee with direct knowledge of the matter. A Google spokesperson declined to comment."Tech companies have been following Google's lead and taking their foot off the pedal in terms of green card applications," said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benachcollopy.com/ava-benach/">Ava Benach</a>, founding partner of Benach Collopy, a leading immigration law firm in Washington DC. "Google has an outsized influence here," she added. "It has a reputation for treating workers well and leading on these things, so if Google stepped back, then this gives other tech companies cover to step back, too."<h2>Amazon and Meta moves</h2>Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-suspended-us-green-card-applications-foreign-workers-2024-4">Amazon</a> told employees it would continue to pause all new PERM filings through 2024, according to an internal announcement seen by Business Insider.Amazon said in the memo it had initially paused PERM applications in 2023 and decided to keep these suspended until the end of this year after reviewing "labor market conditions and immigrant requirements."While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-plan-meta-make-money-from-ai-2024-4">Meta</a> continues to undertake green card sponsorships for international hires, the process has become painfully slow. Getting a green card through Meta is now taking "a year or more," a current employee with knowledge of Meta's hiring processes said.<h2>PERM is a lot harder now</h2>A wave of <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs">job cuts</a> by Google, Amazon, Meta, and other tech companies has made the PERM process more complicated.Companies now have to demonstrate that laid-off employees are not qualified for the jobs intended for foreign workers. They also <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://bashyamglobal.com/blog/the-impact-of-layoffs-on-the-perm-process/">have to notify people</a> who were laid off in the past six months about job openings before filing PERM applications for foreign workers."With more US workers available for open positions, the labor market test fails and so the process becomes a waste of time and money for these tech companies," Benach explained. "If tech companies have done layoffs relatively recently, they also have to notify laid off workers of new positions that may be going to foreign workers," she added. "If some of these people say 'yes, I'm interested,' then you're out of luck with the green card application."Meta's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/layoff-angst-meta-employees-face-tough-reviews-reorgs-2024-3">multiple rounds</a> of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-vps-leave-ahead-of-thousands-more-layoffs-2023-5">mass layoffs</a> reduced the company's headcount by over 20%. The company is now <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-rehiring-workers-from-layoffs-2023-8">hiring again</a>, but it is having to work harder to explain to US Citizenship and Immigration Services why international workers are needed."It's hard to justify PERM after laying off people," the Meta employee told BI.<h2>Supply and demand</h2>Big tech companies may also be less willing to pursue green cards because of changes in supply and demand across the tech labor market.The industry went on a record hiring spree in the previous decade, and this only intensified during the pandemic boom. When big tech companies were fighting over a limited supply of tech talent, the PERM process was a useful weapon to wield."This is a cumbersome, arduous process that no one likes. It often happens when companies are competing intensely for talent," Benach explained. "Saying 'we'll do your green card for you,' is a great perk to attract the best tech employees.""So when, like now, there are more tech workers on the market, these companies don't have to do this as much," she added. "They are not all scrambling for talent anymore, or at least not as much."<h2>Alternatives for foreign tech workers</h2>What should foreign tech workers do if their current employer is taking too long with PERM applications, or has stopped the process entirely?Benach advises candidates to look outside of the Bay Area and New York City for tech jobs in the US. Many other employers across the country need people with science, technology, engineering, and math qualifications, she noted."It's not just Google and the other big Silicon Valley companies," Benach said. "Other companies in other parts of the country are in desperate need of tech workers."Labor market tests for the PERM process are by their nature local. And there are fewer tech workers in other parts of the country, with some people unwilling to move far for jobs. So this makes the green card process potentially easier outside of places like the Bay Area and NYC, she explained.<h2>Big Tech is trying alternatives, too</h2>In an email to BI, an Amazon spokesperson said the company is working with affected employees to find "alternative immigration pathways" to extend their stay in the US.To get around PERM hurdles, some companies are opting to classify international hires as applicants for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uscis.gov/newsroom/alerts/uscis-updates-guidance-on-national-interest-waivers">National Interest Waiver</a>, the Meta employee noted.An NIW application can be done without corporate sponsorship, so an employee can "self-petition" without a specific job offer in hand. This process classifies foreign candidates as people with specific skills and experience that would benefit the US if they became permanent residents.NIW applications jumped in 2023, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/reports/stem_related_petition_trends_eb2_and_o1a_categories_factsheet_fy23.pdf">data</a> from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.<h2>Google wants to change the roles</h2>Google is trying to fix PERM bottlenecks. On Wednesday, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-requests-update-immigration-rules-hire-top-ai-talent-2024-5">it filed a letter with the Department of Labor</a> arguing for changes that broaden the list of roles that can be fast-tracked to a green card.This "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/12/21/2023-27938/labor-certification-for-permanent-employment-of-foreign-workers-in-the-united-states-modernizing">Schedule A</a>" list focuses on jobs the Labor Department considers to be poorly supplied with talent. It hasn't been updated in 20 years, and Google argues the list hasn't evolved to meet the needs of the modern labor market.Google is in particular need of AI experts and the company says it will be hard to hire them all."We project that our need for AI Engineer roles, including Software Engineer, Research Engineer, and Research Scientist roles, will increase significantly in the coming years," Google wrote in the letter. Big Tech's big green card problem

<ul><li><keyword id="472014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-jobs" source="Orion">Green jobs</keyword> or jobs in the ESG space, can be found in a wide range of industries, from renewable energy, and clean technology, to sustainable agriculture, and waste management. </li><li>March 2023 saw approximately 19,379 active job postings for ESG roles. </li><li>December 2022, and January 2023 saw the highest number of such jobs closed in India. </li><li>Organizations are looking for applicants with qualifications in energy, social environment, sustainable business management and environmental studies. </li></ul>The Future of Jobs Report 2023, by the World Economic Forum, did strike a warning note saying that 26 million jobs will be wiped out globally by 2027. However, a macrotrend listed in the report deserves attention. According to the report, businesses expect that the greatest net job creation impact will come from investments that support the green transformation of businesses, the wider adoption of ESG standards, and the localization of supply chains. While this is a broader trend that will change the future job landscape as much as AI will, now is perhaps the best time ever to build a career in ESG. “ESG as an industry or segment is growing and in India while we are late at it, I think in India the main reason for ESG growth is largely because you now have the government initiatives and the target of being net zero by 2070,” says says Munira Loliwala, business head, TeamLease Digital, a tech staffing solutions firm. Growth in <keyword id="14096025" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="esg-jobs" source="Orion">ESG jobs</keyword> ESG jobs are employment opportunities centered around Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. These roles involve responsibilities related to sustainable business practices, impact investing, corporate social responsibility, environmental preservation, social justice, diversity and inclusion, ethical governance, and related areas. According to TeamLease Digital, between 2021 and 2022, <keyword id="17432479" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="esg-hiring" source="Orion">ESG hiring</keyword> and new demands grew almost by more than 147%, as compared to 2020-2021, wherein the post Covid year marked almost 85% of growth in hiring by organizations in India. March 2023 saw approximately 19,379 of active job postings for ESG roles, while December 2022, and January 2023 saw the highest number of jobs closed. The average number of ESG jobs posted stood at 12,400 between December 2022, and March 2023, while the average number of closed positions were 14,136. The average number of active ESG related jobs were 24,000. Organizations embracing ESG “ESG plays an important role if India has to attract global investments. ESG increases the chances of investments or chances of the acquisitions that most of the Indian companies today are looking at,” says Loliwala. Both big and small corporations in India have embraced ESG. Reliance Industries, for example, has integrated ESG into their business models. Led by their chief financial officer, their ESG team is a multi-disciplinary group responsible for all of Reliance’s environmental sustainability, stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance activities. In order to enhance their commitment to ESG principles, HDFC Bank has formed an ESG committee. This committee consists of senior members from key departments within the bank and is chaired by a member of the senior management team. The ESG committee is responsible for developing and implementing the bank's ESG strategy, as well as establishing a roadmap to achieve the set targets. They report to the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee of the Board of Directors, providing updates on the bank's ESG strategy and progress. kindlife, a beauty and wellness platform which launched in 2020, has a strong ESG focus. “Our ESG goals are only achievable with a strong team who works tirelessly to bring our vision to life. We work closely with internationally renowned advisors armed with over 20 years of experience. We’ve worked closely with the World Bank and government bodies in the sustainability and clean energy space,” says Radhika Ghai, founder and CEO, kindlife. They have a team of two consultants who are guiding them with assessing their impact across various parameters and projects. They are also gearing towards their next critical goal of 100% carbon neutrality and a sustainable score for brands and products for which they are working closely with Sishir Garemella, a clean energy and climate technology expert. Talent in demand ESG jobs do not necessarily require skills in the sustainability domain. “Green jobs or jobs in the ESG space, can be found in a wide range of industries, from renewable energy and clean technology to sustainable agriculture and waste management. There are three categories of green jobs based on their degree of dependence on green skills,” says Manu Saigal, director, general staffing, Adecco India. Jobs that require green skills: These are jobs that cannot be performed without specialized knowledge of environmental sustainability. Examples include renewable energy technicians, environmental engineers, and sustainability consultants. Jobs with significant potential to create and hone green skills: “These are jobs that are not necessarily focused on environmental sustainability but have the potential to develop green skills,” says Saigal. Examples include architects and construction workers who build energy-efficient buildings and farmers who use sustainable agriculture practices. Jobs that do not require green skills: “These are jobs that are not specifically related to environmental sustainability but may contribute to sustainability indirectly,” says Saigal. Examples include accountants who work for green businesses and marketing professionals who promote environmentally friendly products. The crucial aspect of ESG is now focused on proper data analysis, collection, reporting, investigation, and filing. The typical structure involves using various frameworks to collect and analyze data, which requires hiring individuals at entry-level and mid-level positions with backgrounds in computer science, mathematics, or engineering. ESG data is considered a type of alternative data that can be utilized in the analysis of companies. As a result, investors and hedge funds are utilizing it to identify investment opportunities with lower risk by assessing a company's favourable environmental and ethical factors. Organizations are also looking to appoint applicants who have qualifications in energy, social environment, sustainable business management and environmental studies, wind and solar energies. And one important subject could also be economics and law. A lot of certification courses are available in this space today. Green jobs: A career option that actually impacts lives & the environment

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Andres Pico, a software engineer from Ecuador, navigated the US education system to land a job at Microsoft.</li><li>Pico faced challenges adapting to US standardized tests and sought scholarships to fund his education.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Andres Pico, a 29-year-old software engineer in Seattle. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in a small beach town called Manta in Ecuador with my dad, mom, and two sisters. My dad always taught me that there was nothing I couldn't do.I became interested in computers and technology because of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/playstation-plus">PlayStation</a>. Sometimes, I couldn't finish a game because the dialogue and options were in English, so I became very motivated to learn computers and English.<h2 id="aea16f41-f4aa-4e6e-926f-62684543751d">After graduating from high school, I decided I wanted to pursue my education in the US</h2>To apply to a university in the US, you must pass either the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/do-colleges-require-standardized-testing-sat-admissions-what-it-means-2024-3">SAT or ACT</a>. I bought an ACT book and prepared for many months to ensure I could get a good score.I knew I couldn't attend college in the US without a scholarship, so I began investigating scholarships and programs. I found the University of South Florida in Tampa offered a scholarship for students from Latin American countries that would get me a student visa.I was awarded the scholarship, which allowed me to receive a stipend of $1,000 a year to cover textbooks and resident status for tuition purposes.<h2 id="1ea4606f-8ed1-484d-bf1a-b39e05b12a66">I began a bachelor's degree in computer engineering in 2012</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-uk-life-biggest-differences-after-moving-home-space-2024-7">Coming to the US</a> at 17 was very challenging. It was my first time leaving home, and there was a lot I didn't understand about the US. I had no close friends or family here for support or guidance.It was also very exciting, as it was an opportunity to push myself. It took some time to get used to classes in English. I studied hard from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.<h2 id="d640f046-61e6-4e77-9c39-669f1b3f751d">In my second semester, I found the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers</h2>The SHPE is a national organization that empowers Hispanics and offers mentorship programs in STEM. Classmates told me they offered free pizza. I'm really glad I was feeling hungry that day.They were welcoming and taught me the basics of the school system, how to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-this-is-an-excellent-resume-2013-11">create a résumé</a>, conduct interviews, and apply to grad school. It was a blessing to find them — suddenly, I had a community of people who wanted to help me succeed.<h2 id="e2632ea8-177e-49a0-b62a-e961cc3cb10a">A fellow student advised me to get as many internships as possible</h2>That was the best advice I received for navigating the US system. If I had just focused on the school material and not gained practical experience, I'm not sure I would've been able to find a job after graduating.I had multiple internships as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recruiter-how-filter-applications-software-engineering-job-post-atl-interview-2024-5">software engineer</a> with local companies in data centers and startups via student work permits. These internships allowed me to gain experience and earn some money.I was extremely fortunate to count on my dad's support to cover any difference between my earnings and expenses.<h2 id="f9d3935c-b09d-48b2-9bb8-dfcaa291a51f">I went on to pursue a master's degree in computer science at Virginia Tech</h2>I sought universities with good computer science programs and scholarships or assistantships. Virginia Tech had an amazing program and great tenured professors, and it offered me an opportunity as a TA, so the decision was obvious.My teaching assistantship paid for all my tuition and also paid me around $20,000 each semester.<h2 id="c9fdec8c-c770-4f06-a7af-8a6bb5f26c51">I started applying for jobs in 2017</h2>I must've applied for over 100 of them. When you apply, employers ask you if they'll need to sponsor you at some point in the future, as not every employer can cover the financial costs associated with the process when the time comes.I received four offers from Microsoft, Verizon, Deutsche Bank, and Disney. Microsoft had the best offer and was willing to sponsor my visa.<h2 id="a93721cf-c9e0-46f2-bd96-3071c98b4800">I started as a software engineer with Microsoft in 2018</h2>When I started my job at Microsoft in Seattle, I could work thanks to a student work permit that lasts one year after graduation and is granted to all F-1 visa students. While working on the student permit, your employer helps you apply for an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/h1b-visa-lottery-changes-benefit-startups-hiring-immigrants-2024-2">H-1B</a> visa.I applied for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-tech-green-card-applications-pause-2024-5">green card</a> after working on my H-1B visa for a year. By this point, I had lived in the US for about six years and created a whole life here, but the green card process was very painful.<h2 id="a2b4001a-c572-41e4-89cb-053b4e3c883a">The process makes life pretty horrible</h2>Having a work visa and going through the green card process are privileges, but it is very hard to separate the emotional component.There's no guarantee that you'll get to stay. If something goes wrong at any given time, you have to be ready to pack your bags and leave everything behind. I know some people who tried to get it three times and ran out of chances and had to return home.The first few years working were also difficult because I wasn't around anyone who looked like me. I wanted to grow and challenge myself, but at the same time, it made me wonder if I belonged, and doubt and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/managing-imposter-syndrome-when-you-are-the-boss-2021-10">imposter syndrome</a> crept in.Luckily, Microsoft paid for the attorneys in the green card process, and no cost came out of my pocket.<h2 id="1eb526a5-91be-4063-bec1-58a529e97297">I had to constantly review what they were putting on the application forms</h2>My key takeaway is that, even if you're working with lawyers, you still have to assume complete ownership of the application process and remember the lawyers supporting you, being human, can make mistakes.I was audited because some of the information that had been submitted was incorrect. It took me six to eight months to provide supplemental information and pass the audit.In 2022, I finally received my green card after three years.<h2 id="bd375841-9305-458d-bfb3-92ac255d1675">Last year, I decided to move into product management and took a new job at Starbucks</h2>In software engineering, you work on problems created by engineers for engineers. I wanted to learn how to build products that our customers actually love, so I ended up becoming a technical product manager.I love the US, I love the city I live in, and I love its people.
