<p>One year ago, <span>Flanzraich</span> met Columbia students <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Omar Haroun and Reuben Doetsch. They had founded a fitness app, <a href="http://www.sportaneous.com/">Sportaneous</a>, and were giving a demonstration at a meetup.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Today, Greatist has acquired Sportaneous for an undisclosed amount. All four members will be joining <span>Flanzraich's startup</span>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Haroun and Doetsch first met on the basketball court at Columbia. They raised a little money last May to build an app that helps users find local classes at gyms. Haroun says it was a side business, so when <span>Flanzraich asked if they wanted to join Greatist, they jumped. The acqui-hire took shape on the basketball court; the three founders play together every Sunday.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Greatist </span>currently has 3 million monthly unique visitors and about 6 million page views. <span>Greatist writes health and wellness articles in a way that's easy to consume and share; 60% of its traffic is referred by social media sites. </span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Each article is verified by experts and is backed by a scientific study from PubMed to make the content more credible.</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Sportaneous' four members will become Greatist's tech team, growing the startup's staff size from 14 people to 18. The current Sportaneous app will likely fold and the team will begin working on new projects for Greatist. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span></span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"We've been thinking for 2.5 years about how to use technology to get people more active," Haroun says. That aligns with Flanzraich's road map nicely. </span></p>
<p>"We've moved into the conversation part of [health and wellness]," Flanzraich says. "The next step is to get people moving and getting them moving with other people. We're creating a social platform for getting people active."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Greatist has raised a little more than $1.1 million.  It says its traffic rivals brands like Shape and Self, and it has content syndication deals with publishers such as USA Today and Time Magazine. It generates money from sponsored posts, and it recently released <a href="http://greatist.com/training-guides">long-form training guides</a>.</span></p>

NY Media Startup Greatist Acquires Columbia Grad's App, Sportaneous

<ul class="summary-list"><li>As <keyword id="6354896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="protests">protests</keyword> have organized across the US and around the world against police brutality and in support of the <keyword id="2771111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-lives-matter">Black Lives Matter</keyword> movement, <keyword id="13835" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="video-game">video game</keyword> users are also uniting for the cause.</li><li>In "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," players are creating customized signs and clothing for their game characters that say "BLM" and depict symbols of "No justice, no peace."</li><li>For those unable to gather outside for in-person demonstrations, the game offers a way for people to still show solidarity virtually. </li></ul><p>What would you do if you had the ability to escape to an island and create a customized world? Would you use it to connect, or disconnect?</p><p>Some "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" players use it to do both — and recently, connecting has included protesting.</p><h2>Animal Crossing: Another place to show BLM support</h2><p>With the online hosting capabilities inherent to the game, "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" is offering people of all ages a unique way to support the ongoing protests against police brutality and systemic racism, even as they stay at home amid the pandemic.</p><p>Typically, players on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-guide-how-to-tips-gameplay-walkthrough-2020-3">"Animal Crossing: New Horizons" create an island paradise</a> that includes buildings, objects, and interactions with non-player characters as well as player characters. Not only can players design their own worlds and homes in the game, but they can also customize personal items and objects that their characters use.</p><p>Lately, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-show-international-anti-racism-black-lives-matter-protests-2020-6">Black Lives Matters demonstrations and protests continue to erupt</a> around the world, these game tools are being used to create digital protests, with users adding 'BLM' imagery to signs and their characters' clothing. </p><p>Parents who might not have felt comfortable taking their children to a physical protest — where there's a risk of physical injury or confrontation — are able to use the game to collaborate and support the Black community by attending or even hosting a <keyword id="27904" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Virtual">virtual</keyword> protest. </p><h2><strong>Users are creating custom designs in support of Black Lives Matter </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="jennifer stavros animal crossing blm hoodie" height="607" width="809" msid="76801358" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><h2><strong>Users are also organizing virtual protests and raising money for <keyword id="112438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="social-justice">social justice</keyword> organizations</strong></h2><p><div type="image" title="animal crossing blm dj" height="711" width="948" msid="76801359" hostid="261"></div></p><p><div type="image" title="Black Lives Matter Animal Crossing" height="720" width="1280" msid="76801360" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Anyone with access to a Nintendo Online account can host an online protest in the game; one such virtual <a href="https://twitter.com/Adellelin/status/1269443425117626374">protest</a> was held on June 7. As there's a limit of only eight players allowed to be on another player's island at a time, interested players were directed to <a href="https://turnip.exchange/">a site which put folks in line to gain access</a>. When the player's turn came, they were given a special code needed to enter the island.</p><p>The protest host made customized signs, pillows, and memorial photos, and carved out a special path and area on their island to hold the sit-in protest. Players were encouraged to bring in-game currency (also known as bells) to the island, which would be converted into a charity donation by the host in the name of the player who contributed.</p><p>This protest <a href="https://twitter.com/Adellelin/status/1269775360037715974">raised money</a> for six different charities. including the NAACP, the National Bail Fund Network, and the Southern Poverty Law Center.</p><h2><strong>A virtual take on peaceful protesting</strong></h2><p><div type="image" title="animal crossing blm glasses" height="607" width="809" msid="76801361" hostid="261"></div></p><p><div type="image" title="black lives matter animal crossing" height="1275" width="1785" msid="76801363" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Even with the positives that "Animal Crossing" offers for players to engage in protests, the environment is still not 100% safe from potential issues.</p><p>Users are free to make comments on the game's in-game chat function, which could allow for potential harassment of players or negative messaging. 'Animal Crossing' users are wearing Black Lives Matter shirts, making signs, and organizing virtual protests

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>A mistake isn't always a bad thing.</p><p>Spanx founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sara-blakely-teaches-spanx-employees-to-embrace-failure-2016-6">Sara Blakely once organized an entire company presentation</a> around the mistakes she'd made. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pixar-director-andrew-stanton-gets-nervous-when-everything-goes-right-2016-6">Pixar director Andrew Stanton</a> tells his team to be wrong as fast as they can. Laszlo Bock, the head of Google's HR, trains his managers to spend as much time in meetings <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/laszlo-bock-why-leaders-should-talk-about-failure-2016-3">dissecting what went wrong as what went right</a>.</p><p>Derek Flanzraich, CEO of multimedia health company <a href="http://greatist.com/">Greatist</a>, says that making mistakes is his primary method of learning.</p><p>In an interview featured in the book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IAOEZG2/ref=dp-kindle-redirect#nav-subnav">What If It Does Work Out</a>," he told author Susie Moore:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I learn almost entirely by f---ing things up first - and sometimes I have to f--- it up a couple times. I wish that wasn't true, but it's super true for me at least. I think success is not about not making mistakes, but about (and this isn't my phrase) mistakes well-handled."</p><p>That phrase, "mistakes well-handled," comes from a chapter in restaurateur Danny Meyer's 2006 book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Setting-Table-Transforming-Hospitality-Business/dp/0060742755">Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business</a>," where he explains that the actions following a mistake are ultimately more important than worrying about preventing a mistake itself.</p><p>That's not to say <span>Flanzraich</span> doesn't worry about missteps - he just doesn't let it interfere with what he's trying to accomplish. When Moore asked Flanzraich how he overcame the fear of failure, he told her:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I'm not sure I ever did. I still feel those things. I just don't let it stop me. I let it fuel me and I see this as a big journey of learning. I'm confident. I'm hell-bent on building and making this difference that I want to make in the world. CEO: 'I learn almost entirely by f---ing things up first'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kimberly Lucht is a <keyword id="6355515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business">business</keyword> coach who helps women make their first six figures doing what they love. </li><li>During the pandemic, more budding entrepreneurs have decided to finally start their own businesses.</li><li>It can be a great time to get a business started, provided you dodge common pitfalls.</li><li>Ensure you're providing people with the things they need, create a seamless experience, and be sure to add value — and bring some surprise — to a customer experience.</li></ul><p>"I resigned from my job today and, although I'm mildly terrified, I know it's going to lead to even better things. I'm going all in on my business."</p><p>That's what one of <a href="http://www.kimberlylucht.com">my coaching clients</a> sent me a few months ago in the midst of a full-blown pandemic. It's a trend I've seen since March: budding entrepreneurs using this time as an opportunity to leave a job that's not aligned anymore then <keyword id="1369640" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Starting-a-business">starting a business</keyword> of their own.</p><p>There's also been an upward trend of people using a lay-off as a catapult to get started on their entrepreneurial journey. Take Alexandra Etheridge, for example, who got laid off in July and took it as a sign that it was time to start her plant-based meal prep service:</p><p>"In the days following my lay off, I searched for jobs across all industries that interested me, but not a single opening felt like the right fit — or even a good fit. It didn't take me long to figure out that every position I saw was inherently flawed for the same reason: even if the job was a match for my interests or skill set, it wasn't my vision," she told me. "I knew I wanted agency over my own work, from my hours to the projects and clients I take on, and I knew I couldn't have the flexibility I desired as someone's employee."</p><p>She's definitely not the only person who feels this way, especially given current circumstances. <a href="https://www.census.gov/econ/currentdata/dbsearch?program=BFS&amp;startYear=2004&amp;endYear=2020&amp;categories=BA_BA&amp;dataType=T&amp;geoLevel=US&amp;adjusted=1&amp;notAdjusted=1&amp;errorData=0mp;notAdjusted=1&amp;errorData=0">According to the US Census Bureau</a>, applications to start a business have passed 3.3 million in the first three quarters of 2020 — compared with 2.7 million at the same point in 2019.</p><p>As the job market shifts and changes, it's not only the freedom and independence of entrepreneurship that's alluring, but also the security that comes with owning and running your own business. You can't get fired by anyone but yourself! </p><p>That being said, during uncertain economic times, entrepreneurs will want to avoid some pitfalls. Here are three keys that new business owners will want to integrate.</p><h2><strong>1. Create a product or service that people "need to have"</strong></h2><p>The "gotta have it" factor is crucial in a time where people are a little more hesitant to drop their cash. Remember, however, that wants and needs go way beyond basic essentials like food, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer. Here are some questions to ask yourself so that you can tap into people's desires enough for them to buy your product or service without hesitation.</p><p>What would make your offer completely irresistible?</p><p>What specific results does your product or service provide that isn't seen elsewhere?</p><p>What keeps your ideal client or customer awake at night, and how can you serve that pain point?</p><p>People are always buying things that are uniquely useful, distracting, or deeply transformational. As entrepreneurs, we're here to make their lives easier and better so as long as your marketing is centered around results that people actually want, you're good to go.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">2. Make the customer's experience seamless and stress-free</strong></h2><p>If your ideal client or customer is feeling burnt out or fatigued, the last thing they'll want to do is buy or invest in anything overly complicated. Follow this checklist to make sure confusion or complexity won't be a deterrent for potential customers.</p><p>Is your product or service description clear and to the point?</p><p>Does the customer experience feel seamless? If not, what could be simpler?</p><p>When someone buys from you, does it take less than three steps to complete a purchase?</p><p>In short, you'll want to make everything from the product description to the check out process simpler than you think it needs to be. A confused customer will almost always say no.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">3. Provide massive value</strong></h2><p>There's nothing that creates a raving fan base more than an element of surprise and delight. If you can add something special and unexpected into orders or services that you render, that's always a plus. Here are a few questions to get you thinking about what that could be.</p><p>What's something special I could throw in that wouldn't cost me much time or money?</p><p>Is there a hidden desire my customer or client has that I can fulfill easily?</p><p>What would absolutely delight my customer or client?</p><p>I like to tell my clients to underpromise and overdeliver so that there's never any disappointment, just ecstatic clients and customers. A little goes a long way especially right now so get creative, and find fun ways to set yourself apart. </p><p>Starting a business is such a beautiful expression and extension of yourself, and if you've been thinking of doing it for awhile, now could be your time. </p><p>As Etheridge said:"I feel fortunate that I was laid off because it gave me the permission I struggled to give myself to mix things up when I felt desperate for greater fulfillment. My decisions have been simplified and my sense of purpose has been amplified since I started my business. I committed to betting on myself while the rest of the world is uncertain."</p><p>So if you've gotten laid off or quit your job and have a feeling the "next step" is being your own boss, know that this can be a wonderful time to do so, provided you hold these three keys to heart. How I Did It</a>," the CEO of multimillion-dollar company VaynerMedia told Alyson Shontell, Business Insider US editor in chief, that he doesn't get hungry.</p><p>"I eat at night," he said.</p><p>Vaynerchuk has figured out a system - for eating, exercising, and sleeping - that works congruently with the demands of running a $125 million company, raising a family, and maintaining a high quality of life. </p><p>It wasn't always this way - and it didn't come easily. </p><p>"A year and a half ago, I was eating like crap, not working out, and generally feeling awful," he <a href="https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/heres-whats-wrong-with-fitness-entrepreneurs/">wrote on his website in 2016</a>. "It was a tough life, and I realized quickly that I couldn't sustain a life like that. It was impossible. So I hired a trainer to force me to be better. I made an enormous lifestyle shift, and I am so happy I did."</p><p>That trainer was Mike Vacanti, who, if you're interested, has <a href="http://www.ontheregimen.com/2015/11/23/how-to-build-real-muscle-gary-vaynerchuks-workout-plan/">posted the custom workout plan</a> he used with Vaynerchuk online.</p><p>Being an entrepreneur had always been second-nature to Vaynerchuk; being healthy was a far greater challenge for him.</p><p>"Health was the first thing I encountered in my life that didn't come naturally to me," he <a href="http://greatist.com/connect/one-question-to-change-your-health">wrote for Greatist</a>. The CEO of a multimillion-dollar company explains how he's able to stay in top shape while running a media empire

<p>You might have seen some variation of the following post on Instagram, featuring a lithe-looking woman in an arabesque with <a href="https://instagram.com/explore/tags/barre/">the hashtag #barre</a>:</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">The photos posted there look like a mix of yoga, ballet, and fitness content all rolled into one. So what, exactly, is barre?</p><p class="embed-spacer">A barre is what ballerinas use to practice their moves in the dance studio - and it's also a workout style&#xa0;that incorporates that same apparatus.&#xa0;<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">With its fluid movements and promises of long, lean muscles, barre is basically the new-and-improved Pilates, and it's taking the fitness world by storm.</span></p><p class="embed-spacer">But as it turns out, barre has actually been around for awhile.</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Barre as we know it got its start in the 1950s when&#xa0;German&#xa0;ballerina Lotte Berk decided to retire her toe shoes and turn her favorite&#xa0;ballet conditioning moves into a workout. Then known as </span><a href="http://www.lotte-berk.com/">the Lotte Berk Method</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, it included a mix of floor and barre exercises with oddly named moves like "the Peeing Dog" and "the French Lavatory" coined by its eccentric founder, according to</span><a href="http://www.theguardian.com/news/2003/nov/08/guardianobituaries.artsobituaries"> a Guardian&#xa0;obituary</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">&#xa0;of Berk.</span></p><p class="embed-spacer">The Lotte Berk Method caught on and endured for several decades - YouTube videos from the '80s and '90s show how it evolved from a series of fluid motions to a slightly more rigorous workout involving quicker repetitions.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Here's an excerpt from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyEovW7X1MM">an early Lotte Berk video</a> with an artistic, conceptual, and ballet-oriented opening sequence:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Here's one that looks like it's from the late '90s and&#xa0;seems more influenced by the&#xa0;then-booming aerobics&#xa0;culture. It's from a video called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYJNTOVoVqo">"The Lotte Berk Method: Muscle Eats Fat."</a></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">By Berk's death in the early 2000s, her&#xa0;devotees were splintering off and creating their own workout studios dedicated to ballet-inspired barre workouts. These included Physique 57, Core Fusion, and Pure Barre, <a href="http://www.shape.com/fitness/workouts/then-now-7-retro-workouts-still-get-results/slide/2">according to Shape magazine</a>.</p><p class="embed-spacer">It just goes to show how obsessive barre fans become. Jennifer Vaughn Maanavi and Tonya Becker founded Physique 57 in 2005&#xa0;as a direct reaction to the Lotte Berk Method's New York City studio shuttering.</p><p>"When it closed, I was so upset I quit my job at Morgan Stanley and started this," Maanavi&#xa0;<a href="http://observer.com/2010/12/barre-none-the-chicest-workout-in-town/">told the Observer in 2008</a>. "I couldn't exist without it."</p><p>Now, Physique 57 is the most star-studded of the barre studios. Hilaria Baldwin, Zooey Deschanel, Kelly Ripa, and Parker Posey are all devotees, <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-body/news/where-kim-kardashian-jennifer-lopez-and-other-stars-work-out-20111811">according to Us Weekly</a>.</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">But being a celeb favorite, Physique 57 gets pricey - a single class at one of its eight <a href="http://physique57.com/locations/">international studios</a> will run you up to $36. <a href="http://purebarre.com/ny-unionsquare/">Pure Barre</a>&#xa0;costs $33 per class in New York City. Many gyms offer barre-inspired classes, too, which could be a cheaper option if you want to try it out.</p><p>When taking a barre class, expect to feel some pain.&#xa0;Even if you're in shape from other workouts, the tiny, repeated movements that are key in barre classes will be unlike anything you're accustomed to. But barre studios promise ridiculous results - Physique 57 says you'll see a difference after just eight classes.</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">This is due to barre's tiny isometric movements,&#xa0;<a href="http://greatist.com/move/benefits-of-barre-workout">according to Greatist</a>, like squatting and then moving your torso&#xa0;up and down only an inch over and over. This helps isolate certain muscles and bring them to fatigue more quickly, which leads them to grow stronger over time.</p><p>Here's what you can expect for the basic structure, <a href="http://greatist.com/move/benefits-of-barre-workout">according to Greatist</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>You'll start with a mat-based warm-up full of planks and push-ups, do a series of arm exercises, and continue at the bar with a lower-body section to work your thighs and glutes. Finally, you'll finish with a series of core-focused moves at the bar or a short session on the mat.</span></p><p><span>Depending on where you take the class, you might also use small barbells, a bouncy playground ball, bands, and grippy socks to keep from sliding around. The trendy barre workout is the biggest craze since Soul Cycle - here's what it's all about

Pictured is Rob Barnett, who lost 75 pounds in 18 months.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>The key to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/weight-loss">weight loss</a> and weight management is sticking to a boring diet, say Rob Barnett and Christopher Payne.</strong></li><li><strong> Barnett and Payne are formerly obese economists and the authors of "The Economists' Diet."</strong></li><li><strong>Research backs them up: People seem to eat less when they eat the same foods every day.</strong></li><li><strong>Still, some variety in your diet is important for overall health.</strong></li></ul><p><br />"A boring diet is a slimming diet."</p><p>So says Rob Barnett, an economist and a co-author of "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074ZGR8FR/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1&amp;tag=bisafetynet2-20">The Economists' Diet: The Surprising Formula for Losing Weight and Keeping it Off</a>."</p><p>In the book, Barnett and another economist, Christopher Payne, explain how it's possible to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-lose-weight-according-to-economists-2018-1">lose a significant amount of weight</a> using fundamental principles of economics, the same way they did.</p><p>Both Barnett and Payne were once obese. Payne lost about 45 pounds in 18 months; years later, Barnett lost 75 pounds in 18 months.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-lose-weight-according-to-economists-2018-1">I spoke with Barnett and Payne</a> in January, and they told me that, to this day, one of their best weight-management tricks is sticking to a relatively monotonous diet.</p><p>Barnett said it goes back to the concept of diminishing returns.</p><p>To use his example: If you eat a single Oreo, you're going to enjoy it - but "if you eat a full bag of Oreos, by the time you eat the last one, you're not going to get nearly as much happiness or utility out of it."</p><p>He added: "If you restrict your food choices day in and day out, no matter what kind of preferences you have for food, you're going to get bored with it."</p><p>Both authors said they eat a salad for lunch every weekday. By contrast, another group that was presented with the same macaroni and cheese once a week for five weeks ended up eating more over time.</p><p>Another small study, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3557817/pdf/nihms416283.pdf">published 2013</a> in the journal Appetite, yielded similar findings in children between ages eight and 12. Interestingly, kids who were given a similar macaroni and cheese dish decreased their consumption as much as kids who were given the same macaroni and cheese dish. And both groups lost more weight than kids who were given a variety of meals.</p><h2>Some amount of nutritional variety is still important for overall health</h2><p>The "similar" bit above is key here: You probably don't want to eat exactly the same foods every single day of your life, even if you might wind up slimmer.</p><p>As Alexandra Duron <a href="https://greatist.com/eat/same-food-every-day">reported for Greatist</a>, when you eat the same thing every day, you're necessarily missing out on certain nutrients. Duron also cites a study, <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/145/3/564/4743710">published 2014</a> in the Journal of Nutrition, suggesting that nutritional variety is associated with a smaller chance of developing metabolic syndrome, or risk factors for issues including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.</p><p>A sensible middle ground between a Groundhog Day diet and complete variety appears in a recent <a href="http://www.grubstreet.com/2018/03/ultimate-conversation-on-healthy-eating-and-nutrition.html">New York Magazine feature</a>, in which David Katz, the director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, and columnist Mark Bittman answer common questions about nutrition.</p><p>Asked whether it's OK to eat the same thing every day, they recommend eating the same <em>type</em> of meals every day - and being more creative at dinnertime.</p><p>As they suggested: "So, for instance, how about whole grains (hot or cold), mixed fruits, and nuts for breakfast - every day? Then, how about a salad, soup, or stew of mixed vegetables and beans or lentils for lunch? 2 formerly obese economists lost a combined 120 pounds in 18 months - and a 'boring diet' was one of their core tricks

'<em>It has protein! It's smooth (or crunchy)! It's delicious!'</em> people once cried.</p><p>New nuts (and seeds!) have entered center stage in recent months. From almond to cashew, walnut to sunflower, the dozens of options can seem staggering. </p><p>But according to r<span>egistered dietitian and nutritionist </span><a href="http://andybellatti.com/">Andy Bellatti</a>, there's a super simple way to ensure your nut butter is a healthy option: Make sure it has only two ingredients.</p><p>"If the only ingredients are nuts and salt, just natural nut butter, that totally works," Bellatti told Business Insider. "It can be peanut butter, which P.S. is around four times cheaper than almond butter. It's still going to have your protein, healthy fats, and vitamin E." </p><p>You can get a 16-ounce container of Smucker's Chunky Peanut Butter (ingredients: peanuts and salt) for $2.94 at Walmart; a 16-ounce jar of California Almond Butter (ingredients: dry roasted almonds) costs $12.99, by comparison.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/greatist/6201258218/in/photostream/">flik/Greatist</a></span></p><p class="caption">Om nom nom.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Still, no one should be going on an all-nut-butter diet. These spreads are high in fat and, while they do pack some protein and essential vitamins, they're pretty calorie-dense. Two tablespoons of Smucker's packs 210 calories and 16 grams of fat; the same serving of the California Almond Butter has 170 calories and 15 grams of fat. </p><p>If you're looking to pack an alternative lunch that saves time, try a turkey breast sandwich on whole wheat with a couple slices of avocado or some hummus. The white meat is high in protein and low in fat and calories, while the avocado and whole wheat bread pack some healthy vegetable fats and fiber to keep you feeling satisfied.</p><p>While almost frustratingly straightforward, this advice hints at a bigger problem in the food industry, which is the fact that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/signs-a-diet-is-just-a-fad-2016-3">food trends</a> can often supersede solid nutritional advice, says Bellatti, who works as a health coach.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"A lot of the people I coach say they want to lose weight, but </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">everyone goes looking for the magic bullet. When there's something new, like almond butter, they think 'Oh, here's what I've been missing all these years!'"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But it's rarely that simple.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of going after the latest health fad, there are a handful of principles based on scientific studies and research that you can stick to. In general, says Bellatti, try to avoid things like powders, pills, and anything that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-gwyneth-paltrow-eats-every-day-2016-3">claims to provide benefits in really vague terms</a>. "If something says it can 'harmonize your aura,' that's a red flag," says Bellatti. And talk to the people around you for inspiration. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"I tell people to look at their friends and family members who are living the type of life they want to live," says Bellatti. "Look at these people and say, 'What are they doing?' Well, it doesn't have to be.</p><p>In the early days of my coaching and consulting business, I charged as little as I could - for all kinds of reasons - but eventually I realized they were all rooted in fear.</p><p>I was afraid if I asked for more money, people would take their business elsewhere; that I didn't really have the experience or the knowledge to merit the paycheck I wanted to earn; and that in a world full of "experts" and "authorities," I didn't stack up. Here's how to beat it.</p><p>Know the facts, because facts kill fear. The simplest way to undermine the fear that you're not good enough is to get a clear understanding of what other people get paid. Seriously. That's how I started making <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-secret-to-out-earning-your-colleagues-2017-1">$500,000 a year by the age of 30</a> with no college degree.</p><p>I researched my competition as often as possible.</p><p>I asked myself objectively, "How do I measure up? Are my outcomes as good as theirs? Am I as visible in the industry as they are?"</p><p>I did my homework!</p><p>Once you do yours, you might just realize you're at the top of the class. If you're not, seeing where you fall short will equip you to make the changes you need to make to get there.</p><h2><strong>2. Ask and you shall receive</strong></h2><p>On a wrap-up call after a successful three-month consulting gig, my client said, "Susie, you've saved me a year of procrastinating and probably a ton of money."</p><p>In the past, I might have just told him how much that meant to me. But this time, I said, "Don't keep me to yourself, Sean! Does anyone else you know need some sales strategy help?" Turns out a former colleague of his needed exactly that. Those two sentences landed me my next three-month contract.</p><p>If you don't ask, the answer is always no.</p><p>You've seen it yourself: People are never more amenable to giving you what you want than after you've just made their life a whole lot easier. If you do a brilliant job for a few people, you'll end up with more opportunities than you know what to do with.</p><h2><strong>3. Set clear boundaries from the get-go</strong></h2><p>Listen to me on this one, because it's really important: Yielding to your clients' demands at the expense of your own wellbeing never works (for long).</p><p>The secret to healthy boundaries is clear communication from day one.</p><p>At the beginning of a new project, I get a contract signed.</p><p>I've come up with a simple set of packages for my services that lay out what I'll give (in terms of time, access, and resources) for what amount of money. Doing this not only makes boundary-setting simple and straightforward; it also makes you look like you have your s--- together.</p><p>Emphasis on "simple" here. Too many business owners try to be everything to everyone by offering an extensive list of elaborate packages that only confuse their prospects and kill their sales.</p><p>On top of that, something I refer to as the "over-delivery fallacy" holds many business owners back from their true earning potential. "I'm available by text and email in the evenings and on weekends," is simply code for, "I don't respect my time and abilities enough, and neither should you."</p><p>A lack of boundaries will eventually make you resent your work.</p><h2><strong>4. If you want influence, seize it</strong></h2><p>This was the <em>game changer</em> for me.</p><p>Essentially, people will pay more to work with someone who they deem to be a thought leader.</p><p>If you don't believe you're good enough or smart enough or informed enough to have a voice in the conversation, you never will. This is another way imposter syndrome can hold you back. You might eventually gain success and respect in your field without having a prominent voice in your industry, but it'll be a hell of a lot harder. And it doesn't have to be.</p><p>You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be "out there."</p><p>You don't have to be <em>everybody's </em>expert to be <em>an </em>expert, you just need to remember that what you know and believe is valuable. This not only attracts droves of the (right!) people to you, it earns you more inbound leads and an expectation that your services come at a premium.</p><p>I started writing guest articles for websites like Business Insider, MindBodyGreen, Greatist, and Marie Claire while I was still employed, and it gave me more leverage than I could have imagined.</p><p>Whether your goal is to start or grow your own business, move up the ladder within a corporation, or to make a salary or title leap with a different company, positioning yourself as a subject-matter expert is crazy valuable.</p><p>Because perception is reality.</p><p><em>Susie Moore is a high-performance coach, consultant, and author in New York City.
