<ul><li><strong>RBI keeps interest rates unchanged even as the market was expecting a rate cut. <br /><br /></strong></li><li><strong>This year, RBI has cut interest rates by five times, <strong>consecutively</strong>.<br /><br /></strong></li><li><strong>India’s interest rates are already at a ten-year low. <br /><br /></strong></li><li><strong>Most experts have been hoping for a 25 basis point rate cut this time too, some expected a 50 bps cut. <br /></strong></li></ul>India's central bank has taken note of the pains of households who are struggling with rising food prices, at this monetary policy committee (MPC) review. Hence, in spite of being burdened with the task of pushing a slowing economy, the RBI kept its interest rates unchanged at 5.15%. <br /><br />Had RBI cut interest rates again, it would have brought more money into the system, which would hike prices of essential items.  The interest rate is at which RBI lends to the banks who are then expected to give out cheaper loans.  <br /><br />This however is a shocker for market watchers and investors who have been expecting a 25 basis point rate cut. In fact, after the dismal second quarter GDP which grew at a mere 4.5%, economists have been batting for 50 basis point rate cut. <br /><br />But the decision to keep rates unchanged was 'unanimous' at the meeting held today. "Food inflation will be very high from January to March 2020," said <keyword id="6359111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shaktikanta-Das">Shaktikanta Das</keyword>, the governor of RBI told the press conference. <br /><br />The country’s interest rates, after five successive cuts in all the MPC review meetings meeting this year -- is already at its lowest in ten years. But it was not enough. <br /><br />And the lack of a rate cut yet again disappointed many including Sensex which dropped 100 points right after the announcement. <br /><br />"With the growth projection for the current year being revised down from 6.1% to 5%, both government and the central bank should initiate some stronger measures to break the logjam particularly in the stressed sectors of the economy," said Sandip Somany, president of industry body, FICCI. <br />

It means Das has to do a much more sensitive balancing act. <br /><br />This time, the expectations are also sky high expectations. “The recovery is unlikely to be V-shaped as consumer demand, credit supply and risk appetite remains lacklustre. Food inflation will be very high from January to March 2020, warns RBI governor as he keeps interest rates unchanged

New Delhi, Apr 24 () The economic advisory panel of the 15th Finance Commission has suggested that the government should look to support small enterprises and avert bankruptcies in the financial sector as part of the fiscal response to deal with the coronavirus crisis. <p> At its two-day meeting held via video conferencing, the members of the Advisory Council felt that the shortfall in tax and other revenues will be large due to subdued economic activity and hence the fiscal response to the crisis should be much more nuanced.  </p><p> "It is important not just to look at the size of fiscal response but also carefully at its design... The Advisory Council also felt that the magnitude of the impact of these developments on public finances is uncertain, but will certainly be significant.  </p><p> "Governments will have substantial expenditure burden on account of health, support to poor and other economic agents," an official statement issued after the meeting said.  </p><p> The council felt that the COVID-19 pandemic and the national lockdown would slow down domestic activity and impact cash flows of financial institutions and businesses, besides loss of global demand for Indian products because of a steep global recession.  </p><p> "All of them were unanimous to suggest that the projections of real GDP growth made before March 2020 need to be relooked into entirely, and, revised downwards considerably.  </p><p> "Once the lockdown of the economy is released, the recovery can only be excepted to be gradual, depending on the ability of the workforce to get back to work soon, restoration of supplies of intermediates and cash flows and, of course, the demand for output. Therefore, the full magnitude of the economic impact of Covid will only be clear only over a course of time," the statement said.  </p><p> Among the suggestions made to the commission, the council members said small scale enterprises were cash-starved even prior to the onset of the pandemic. "As their activity levels and cash flows are affected, it is important that a support mechanism be devised to help them overcome this problem," it said.  </p><p> Also, non-banking financial companies are affected by the slowdown and in order to avoid bankruptcies and deepening of NPAs in the financial sector, measures should be appropriately designed.  </p><p> Measures like partial loan guarantee may help. The Reserve Bank of India will have a key role in ensuring that financial institutions are well-capitalised, the council members suggested.  </p><p> Also the finances of the central and state governments need to be watched carefully in the wake of increased spending to fight the pandemic. "As we move ahead, we need to think of options for financing the additional deficit. It is important to ensure that the State governments get access to adequate funds to undertake their fight against the pandemic," it added.  </p><p> Besides the healthcare cost, the government is also faced with the additional burden of giving booster or stimulus to sectors and industries hit by the nationwide lockdown. </p><p> The lockdown that began on March 25 was last week extended till May 3. Late last month, the government had announced a Rs 1.7 lakh crore stimulus package comprising free foodgrains and cooking gas to poor and cash dole to poor women and elderly. </p><p> A second package, aimed at industries, is said to be in the works and will likely be announced shortly.  </p><p> Several international agencies including IMF and the World Bank have cut India's growth forecast over concerns about the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. </p><p> The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has slashed India's GDP growth projection to 1.9 per cent in 2020 from 5.8 per cent estimated in January, as the global economy hits the worst recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s due to the raging coronavirus pandemic. </p><p> Similarly, the World Bank has estimated India's economy to grow between 1.5 to 2.8 per cent in the 2020-21 -- the worst growth performance since the 1991 liberalisation. </p><p> Fitch has projected India's GDP to grow at 0.8 per cent this fiscal, while S&amp;P pegs it at 1.8 per cent and Moody's at 2.5 per cent in 2020. </p><p> These growth estimates compare to an estimated 5 per cent growth rate in 2019-20 fiscal that ended on March 31. India's economy also grew by 5 per cent in 2019 calendar year.  </p><p> The council also felt that it is likely that different states may come out of the severity of the impact of the pandemic in different stages. After rubbing shoulders with CEOs at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month, the comedian has now made it to Forbes India’s 30 under 30 list. <br /><br />The 26 year old is one of the two YouTubers along with <em>Technical Guruji </em>Gaurav Chaudhary who made their debut on the list this year. “YouTuber Bhuvan Bam graduated from ‘Watch Out For’ to debut in the digital content creators category,” Forbes India said in <a href="http://www.forbesindia.com/article/30-under-30-2020/forbes-india-30-under-30-a-cut-above-the-rest/57513/1">its press release</a>. <br /><br />For Bam, the journey started in 2015 when he realized that very few people were making YouTube videos in Hindi, and started his channel “BB Ki Vines”. <br /><br />Back then, India had few homegrown comedians. The Viral Fever and All India Bakchod were creating content, but in English. <br /><br />“I thought I should bring some kind of humour. I’ve grown up watching Kader Khan, Johnny Lever, Govinda kind of movies, David Dhawan movies, ’90s and early 2000s movies. And that was a good change for people. The language barrier was at a breaking point,” Bhuvan<a href="https://qz.com/india/1456007/the-making-of-bhuvan-bam-indias-biggest-youtube-star/"> told Quartz. </a><br /><br />Five years on, Bam has a wide fan base and his videos received a billion views. He is now as famous as any other Bollywood celebrity in India — and celebrities like Karan Johar are in awe of him as well. <br /><br />He also went where no one expected this expletive spewing YouTuber will go --- to the World Economic Forum to tell the story of how he captured the pulse of young Indians. <br /><br /><strong>Jokes that no one would laugh at </strong><br /><br />In 2015, Bhuvan was yet another college boy who used to sing at a restaurant for ₹3,000 a night. The natural performer also believed he could tell funny stories though nobody in his family would laugh at them. One day, he decided to post a 15 second video — that mocked the media for their insensitive question in Kashmir floods — on his Facebook page. <br /><br />“A reporter was asking this lady ‘How do you feel, (now) that you’ve lost your son?’ It was a silly question. I couldn’t control myself. I had to make a satire of it,” says Bam. <br /><br /><br />He decided to post some more. <br /><br /><strong>Fans from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh<br /></strong>Success did not come instantly. The first few videos received a mere 15 views. Gradually, that 15 turned to 300 and he shot to fame in his college and others. To his surprise, he built a fanbase in Karachi University. But India was still unaware of him. <br /><br />“India took a lot of time to warm up to my videos!” He moved from Facebook to Youtube after a friend suggested monetising what he was doing. <br /><br /><strong>The Karan Johar of Youtube</strong><br />Bam managed to get the attention of people after his video “Valentine’s Week Hutiyapa” went viral in 2016. He even got a million subscribers to his Youtube channel in 7 months. Since then, Bam experimented a lot - right from dancing to singing. He also co-produced a movie Plus minus. <br /><br />Soon, he became an influencer and endorsed as many as 30 brands until April 2019. He is now the face of Lenskart. His success lies in his no-cost production strategy. He created 16 characters and acted for all of them. He shoots his videos himself, edits and posts them himself. <br /><br />“I don’t spend a single penny on them. I take 15 to 16 days to come up with a video and do one or two videos a month. That’s a long time. People who have big production houses need to hire people, pay vendors etc,” <a href="https://qz.com/india/1456007/the-making-of-bhuvan-bam-indias-biggest-youtube-star/">he told Quartz. </a><br /><br />At first Bam wanted to be a part of Bollywood but he now believes Youtube is bigger. “I want to be the Dharma productions of YouTube. <ul><li>Followers can sue influencers for lying about liking a product under the Consumer Protection Act 2019.</li><li>Most online influencers in India do not reveal if they’re genuinely endorsing a product or if they’ve been paid to say nice things about it, even if it’s not true constituting ‘misleading advertisement’.</li><li>The fine can go as high as ₹10 lakh. </li><li>A Buzzoka survey finds that it’s not the brands of the influencers at fault, but influencer agencies who don’t wish for influencers to reveal whether or not they’re being paid. </li></ul>It’s not uncommon to see social media ‘influencers’ flaunt their latest purchases or talk about their favourite brands, online. In fact, it’s an integral part of being an influencer — mostly because fans believe the feedback is honest. <br /><br />If it’s not, followers are fully within their rights to sue the influencer under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Fines for misleading advertising can go up to ₹10 lakh for the first offence. Repeat offenders can be charged up to ₹50 lakh. <br /><br />The reality is that a lot of influencers out there are raking in the big bucks, but they’re not necessarily disclosing that they were paid to endorse a particular product. To make matters worse, there’s nobody is standing at the gates to point out when it’s an ad and when it’s not. <br /><br />So, a particular ‘anecdote’ about comfy slippers might actually be a paid-for advertisement but followers would be none the wiser. <br /><br />Last month, two Bollywood actors — Govinda and Jackie Shroff were fined by a court for endorsing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/it-took-5-years-to-fine-jackie-shroff-and-govinda-for-endorsing-product-with-fake-promises-during-which-infomercials-in-india-doubled/articleshow/72217254.cms">products as a part </a>of infommercials which too traverse the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/it-took-5-years-to-fine-jackie-shroff-and-govinda-for-endorsing-product-with-fake-promises-during-which-infomercials-in-india-doubled/articleshow/72217254.cms">invisible line between truth </a>and fiction. <br /><br />Social media influencers have a wider reach and a deeper trust factor. <br /><br /><strong>When can you sue an influencer?<br /></strong><br />Disclosure is one way to ensure transparency. Not telling a person that an ad is an ad isn’t technically wrong if you actually and genuinely believe in a product. The problem is when influencers intentionally lie or mislead their followers about how ‘awesome’ a new lipstick is when it’s actually not.<br /><br />Falsifying a product’s description, giving fake guarantees or deliberating keeping pertinent information from users is against the law if a person is being paid to do it — it falls under ‘misleading advertisements’, according to <a href="http://www.mondaq.com/article.asp?articleid=877176&amp;email_access=on">LexRidge Partners, Advocates and Solicitors.</a><br /><br />It’s an especially grave concern in <keyword id="2540701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Influencer-marketing">influencer marketing</keyword> because the relationship between the influencer and the followers has a lot to do with trust. The <keyword id="8484407" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="most-popular-influencers">most popular influencers</keyword> have their platforms because, at one point or another, they have ‘called it like they see it’ — reinforcing a level of honesty. <br /><br />Keep in mind that the influencer market isn’t restricted to make-up products and gadgets, even political parties — the most prominent of which is the BJP — uses influencers to power their brand, according to Buzzoka’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/brands/article/top-three-social-media-platforms-to-be-used-for-influencer-marketing-in-2020/articleshow/72867621.cms">Influencer Marketing Outlook 2020</a>.<br /><br /><strong>The middle-man<br /></strong><br />The fault does not lie solely on the influencer’s shoulders. And, contrary to popular belief, the brands aren’t entirely to blame either. <br /><br />Between an influencer and the brand, there’s usually a middle man — the influencer marketing agency. They are the ones that don’t want to disclose that an ad is an ad. This is true even if the brand and the influencer don’t have a problem with it, according to Buzzoka’s report.<br /><br />It’s because marketers see ‘word of mouth’ as one of the key reasons behind an influencer’s popularity. And, there’s no avoiding them.<br /><br />Brands believe influencer agencies to be the key link between markets and influencers. Moreover, influencers also believe that these agencies are the best way to get more deals under their wing. <br /><br /><strong>The bittersweet taste of success<br /></strong><br />Currently, India’s influencer market stands at $75-150 million, according to AdLift, a digital marketing agency. And, it’s expected to increase as India’s data prices remain one of the cheapest in the world. <br /><br />At the same time, brands progressively believe that influencers are compromising on the authenticity of their content by signing up for too much simultaneously. Most agree that stringent rules need to be in place to control content association as per Buzzoka’s report.<br /><br />And it may well be. The Nepal government has given its go-ahead to the proposal. The Nepalese Cabinet approved a draft agreement to allow the company to build the power plant, which would have a capacity of 900 megawatt.<br />
<br />
“This agreement would open the door for more foreign investment to enter Nepal to develop hydro power projects,” Govinda Pokhrel of Nepal’s Planning Commission said.<br />
<br />
It will take five years for the company to build the plant, and make it operational, including constructing the transmission lines. It will operate the plant for 25 years, and hand it over to Nepal at the end of the term.<br />

However, the big release this week was the Hollywood movie Interstellar. Though it is not a franchise movie but it garnered a good buzz especially in the metros. The movie garnered earnings to the tunes of Rs 2 crores on the first Friday of its India release. The business grew further on Saturday to touch Rs 3 crore, and interestingly, even on Sunday the movie manage to pocket another Rs 4.10 crore.<br />

<em>Interstellar</em> has managed to get good collections worldwide. Early <a href="file:///C:\Users\surbhi.chawla\Documents\CyberLink">numbers</a> for this movie directed by Christopher Nolan's are reporting <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> at $52.2 million. That's slightly short of expectations which had the film outpacing the opening weekend for last year's sci-fi space epic, <em>Gravity</em>. That film made $55.8 million upon debut.<br />

After her debut American TV series <keyword id="253731" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Quantico">Quantico</keyword>’s first episode earned her rave reviews, she’s at it again wowing audiences with her appearance on the popular night show ‘<keyword id="345460" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jimmy-Kimmel">Jimmy Kimmel</keyword> Live!’ on Monday night.<br />

The star was there to promote Quantico and pulled off an effortlessly chic look and the interview with ease.<br />
<br />
Chopra was dressed in a navy blue bodycon dress with a belt accentuating her waist and completed her look with a pair of Christian Loubotin pumps and oxblood lipstick, and I can’t help but say I dig her look and her attitude. She was confident, sassy and fun!<br />
<br />
While the jury is out on whether her accent was downright irritating or had faint hints of Indianness in it, it’d be stupid to not admit that she did kill the interview.<br />
<br />
Before watching the five minute clip, I didn’t expect to like it that much. But, I did. And, I’m pretty sure you did too. Jimmy Kimmel himself looked quite impressed!<br />

Growing up, we’ve all hated going to school wearing uniforms and have dreamt about going school abroad just so we could wear whatever we want and not knee-length socks or skirts that last till below the knees, haven’t we?<br />
Priyanka Chopra was no different. She admitted on the show that she didn’t want to go to school in India because she’d have to wear uniforms.<br />
Her admission drew a laugh from Kimmel who said, “That must’ve been a fairly long commute.”<br />

<strong>2. </strong>“<strong>Every morning I had to wake up two hours early to figure what to wear”</strong><br />
<br />
Just after revealing the fact that she went to high-school in America because she could wear whatever she wanted and not an uniform, she was quick to admit that in hindsight that turned out to be a bad decision because she had to wake up two hours early to decide what to wear.<br />
Be it in high school, college or before an important occasion, all girls have been guilty of going through the ‘I have nothing to wear’ phase and spend an outrageously long amount of time deciding what to wear.<br />

<strong>3. </strong><strong>“You know Indians, right? We travel in packs”</strong><br />
<br />
While telling Kimmel that her aunt lives in America, she also elaborated on the fact that her mother’s side of the family live there as well. Then she added the supreme truth about Indians- “We travel in packs.”<br />
That statement hit right home, Priyanka. It did.<br />

<strong>4. </strong><strong>“I was supposed to be Mrs Tupac Shakur”</strong><br />
<br /> All of us are guilty of having celebrity crushes in school that we wouldn’t be proud of right now. The group, known for mythological plays with unique special effects and brilliant lighting schemes, comprises members of a single-family put up a performance every week, and this tradition has been going on for nearly 128 years. Meticulously applied make-up, colourful backdrops, lustrous costumes and magic created through innovative tricks are the forte of Surabhi. It creates a magical effect and transports the audience to a make-believe world. At present, due to Corona Virus, the 50 members of the family have lost their job and going through the worst phase of their lives. The group consist of many kids and older people who are deprived of their basic necessity due to this lockdown going on in India. Their first show <em>Keechaka Vadha </em>involved puppets and live drama. The show was a big success and there has been no turning back since then. <br /><br />The group is also credited to have been the first to bring women on stage. “Since the Surabhi is a family system, women were motivated to perform the women's roles on their own. It also popularised gramophone records, contributed actors to the film industry, and took theatre beyond the geographical boundaries of Andhra Pradesh,” says the group’s official website.<br /><br />They were also the first to tick off the ticketing system for plays. <br /><br />Ever since then, the troop is known for its recreation of Hindu mythology with brilliant light and sound techniques, elaborate yet meticulous make-up, and larger than life costumes and backdrops.
