Amazon India is planning to double its investment on seller infrastructure

New Delhi, Before resigning as an auditor of an <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword> firm, <keyword id="6358918" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="deloitte" source="Orion">Deloitte</keyword> had sought an independent external examination of allegations made by a US short-seller but the company said the allegations had no effect on financial statements and the reasons cited for quitting were not convincing to warrant such a move. In a 163-page filing with stock exchanges relating to Deloitte Haskins &amp; Sells LLP's resignation, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) said that in meetings with its leadership, Deloitte indicated concern over a lack of a wider audit role as auditors of other listed Adani companies. However, the firm conveyed to the auditor that it was not within its remit to recommend such appointments as other entities are "completely independent". "The Audit Committee (of APSEZ) was of the view that the grounds advanced by Deloitte for resignation as <keyword id="149824" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="statutory-auditor" source="Orion">Statutory Auditor</keyword> were not convincing or sufficient to warrant such a move," said Gopal Krishna Pillai, former union home secretary and chairman of the Audit Committee of APSEZ, in a statement. "Deloitte was not willing to continue as ... auditor and, therefore, it was agreed to amicably end the client-auditor contractual relationship," he said. In the August 12 resignation letter, Deloitte said it was resigning as auditor of APSEZ with immediate effect "because we are not statutory auditors of a substantial number of other Adani Group of companies." It went on to state that it had given a qualified opinion in audit of financial statements for quarters ended March 2023 and June 2023. APSEZ appointed MSKA &amp; Associates, an independent member firm of <keyword id="692434" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bdo-international" source="Orion">BDO International</keyword>, as its statutory auditors in place of Deloitte, until the date of its next annual general meeting to be held in 2024, the company said in a filing. Deloitte, which had been the auditor of APSEZ since 2017 and was in July 2022 given another five-year term, had in May first raised concern over certain transactions flagged in the report of Hindenburg Research. These included recoveries from a contractor identified in the Hindenburg report. Hindenburg in its January 24 report that levelled allegations of fraud, stock manipulation, and money laundering against the Adani Group, had also flagged inadequate disclosures of related party transactions. Adani Group has denied all allegations. "We requested the company to initiate an independent external examination of these allegations to determine whether these allegations may have any possible effect on the standalone financial statements of the company," Deolitte said. "The company represented to us that these allegations has no effect on the standalone financial statements of the company." Adani Group did not consider it necessary to have an independent external examination of these allegations because of their evaluation and the ongoing investigation by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). "The assessment by the company did not constitute sufficient appropriate audit evidence for the purposes of our audit," Deloitte said. In the absence of the independent external examination and the pending completion of investigation by SEBI, the auditor said it cannot comment if the company was fully compliant with the law and if the transactions flagged may result in possible adjustments and/or disclosures in the financial statement in respect of related parties. The six-member expert panel appointed by the Supreme Court in May found no regulatory failure or signs of price manipulation in the Adani Group stocks in its interim report. The transactions flagged by Deloitte included engineering, procurement and construction (PEC) purchase contracts with a subsidiary of a party identified in the Hindenburg report. "As at March 31, 2023, a net balance of Rs 2,457.05 crore is recoverable from this contractor, of which Rs 713.63 crore relate to security deposits paid to the contractor and Rs 1,501.50 crore in respect of capital advances," it said. Also, the group "re-negotiated the terms of sale of its container terminal under construction in Myanmar" to Anguilla-incorporated Solar Energy Ltd. The sale consideration was revised from Rs 2,015 crore to Rs 246.51 crore and an impairment charge was taken. The group told the auditor these are not related parties. APSEZ in the statement on Saturday said, "in response to a query by the Audit Committee, Deloitte confirmed that they have received all the APSEZ information from the management of the company." "The same has been confirmed by Deloitte in their resignation letter dated August 12, 2023 to the company," it added. APSEZ said "the 'other matters' highlighted in the auditor's resignation are adequately disclosed and addressed in our FY23 financial statements. We are fully confident that these matters will be appropriately resolved in our September'23 filing." In the aftermath of Hindenburg report, Adani group stocks lost about USD 150 billion in market value at the lowest point, but have since regained by around USD 50 billion after it paid debt and sold stake in group firms to investors such as US-based boutique investment firm GQG Partners and Qatar Investment Authority . This month, Adani's Ambuja Cements acquired a smaller rival Sanghi Industries for up to USD 295 million, its first major purchase since the Hindenburg turmoil.

According to Goldman Sachs, the SME segment has 20 million people with an annual income of $14,000 each. Not only will their numbers grow to 26 million, their annual incomes will also go up to $23,000 by 2025. “We have been deliberately focusing on onboarding sellers from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, or bringing in programs like Amazon launchpad. We have also been developing Amazon Global Selling Program through which 50,000 sellers have already clocked more than a billion dollars in exports and we expect them to make $5 billion by 2023,” Gopal Pillai, VP, Seller Services, Amazon India told Business Insider. Pillai added that through events like Smbhav, Amazon wants SMEs to understand and enjoy the benefits of digital economy. Interestingly, the event is also taking place as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is reportedly visiting India. It is expected that Bezos will also make an appearance at the event. However, Pillai refused to comment on the same. There are 20 million reasons for Jeff Bezos’ likely personal appearance at Amazon’s mega event in India tomorrow

Bengaluru, June 4 (IANS) E-commerce major Amazon on Thursday announced that its sellers will now be able to register on Amazon.in marketplace and manage their online business in Hindi. This will include everything from registering as an Amazon seller for the first time to managing orders, inventory management and accessing performance metrics, all of it in the language of their preference, said an Amazon statement. "The experience has been made available on the Amazon seller website as well as on the mobile app. Amazon also provides Seller Support Services and Seller University videos and tutorials in Hindi," it said. According to the company, hundreds of Amazon sellers from tier-I, II and III cities across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh have switched to the Hindi experience to manage their accounts during the six-months testing phase. During the testing phase, for the first time new sellers from markets like Darbhanga in Bihar, Barmer in Rajasthan, Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh, Hailakandi in Assam and Bardhaman in West Bengal signed up on the Amazon.in marketplace. Gopal Pillai, VP Seller Services, Amazon India, said: "As we look at enabling more and more of Indian MSMEs to embrace ecommerce to grow, we continue to doubledown our efforts on vernacular, voice and video powered initiatives. The launch of the vernacular registration and account management experience for sellers starting with Hindi is a step in that direction." Amazon sellers can now register, manage online business in Hindi

New Delhi, Dec 9 () Amazon.in on Monday said it is focusing on three areas -- vernacular, voice and video -- to help merchants connect better with customers and increase their sales.
 Amazon India Vice President Seller Services Gopal Pillai said its seller base in the country has grown to over 5.5 lakh, and the company continues to work on a number of initiatives to bring more small and medium businesses on its platform.
 "We continue to focus on 3 Vs - vernacular, voice and videos to help sellers. We provide support in five vernacular languages for them, and are working on growing that," he said without disclosing more details.
 Amazon.in is locked in a bruising battle for market leadership in India against Walmart-backed Flipkart, which is also working on bringing more small and medium businesses on its platform.
 Earlier on Monday, Walmart announced that it will open 25 institute hubs in India over the next five years. 
 These hubs will train 50,000 entrepreneurs from the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector and are part of Walmart's "long-term commitment to India", Walmart International President and CEO Judith McKenna said.
 Talking about the company's plan, Pillai said it is organising Small Business Day on December 14.
 "The event will see participation from thousands of manufacturers, small brand owners, start-ups, artisans, and weavers and will encourage shoppers to discover and buy unique and hard-to-find products offered by small businesses and micro entrepreneurs," he said.
 The specially curated online event will offer customers the opportunity to discover and purchase products under its various programs such as Amazon Launchpad, Amazon Saheli, Amazon Karigar and others.
 Amazon also announced its partnership with CII to conduct awareness workshops and training in pre-identified locations to enable small and medium businesses start their e-commerce journey.
 Pillai said Amazon and the industry body will conduct various activities, including a series of awareness workshops, road shows, and e-commerce training, among other initiatives.
 These workshops will be held across India, focused on domestic MSMEs and potential exporters with a view to sensitise these MSMEs on the potential of enhancing market access by leveraging Amazon's global marketplace, he added.
 "E-commerce has played a significant role by lowering entrance costs and barriers to help MSMEs engage in international trade and Global Value Chains (GVC). The inclusiveness of GVC could be greatly enhanced by expanding and extending the benefits of e-commerce platforms to Indian MSMEs," CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said.
 CII and Amazon agreed to start with a series of workshops in five cities in identified MSME clusters of leather &amp; footwear, apparels and textiles, automobile, cycle parts and handicrafts, he added.
 The workshops will aim to raise awareness about e-commerce, and focus on how MSMEs can leverage e-commerce for their success, particularly for B2C (business-to-consumer) exports, he noted. SR RVK

But the entry of an e-commerce giant like Amazon changes the game as it would expand the reach and size of the EV market. Currently, startups like Cars24, CarDekho and Droom sell used and new cars online. Working with the government They are both inking Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with state governments to work with SMEs. On December 5, both Amazon and Flipkart signed MoUs with the government of Punjab. Amazon said that it will work with Punjab Small Industries &amp; Export Corporation to conduct workshops for MSME exporters. They will be given access to Amazon’s customers across over 180 countries through Amazon Global Selling Program. On the very same day, Flipkart too announced its MoU with Punjab government to increase business and trade inclusion opportunities for MSMEs. As per the agreement, Flipkart will bring the sellers, artisans and weavers onto its Samarth initiative. They will brought into the e-commerce fold and provided national market access, along with training and support. Similarly, Amazon also inked pacts with the Himachal Pradesh government while Flipkart signed partnerships with Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh governments. Directly with SMEs Before it turns into an opportunity, they need to educate SMEs with the nuances of the technological world, and help broaden audiences. Neither of the giants are shying away from the ground work. Amazon is hosting a two-day summit called Amazon Smbhav. “Small businesses are the backbone of the Indian economy, contributing to the growth, and embodying the entrepreneurial spirit of Indians. It is imperative that all key stakeholders come together to support the growth and scale of these businesses. Amazon Smbhav will serve as a platform for them to gain the knowledge and achieve that scale - directly from successful industry leaders,” said Gopal Pillai, VP -seller services, Amazon India. Amazon and Flipkart have the same strategy when it comes to wooing India's 20 million small business owners

<keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> added 20,000 new sellers in last six weeks and tripled its seller base this year to whopping 1, 20,000. With these seller base numbers, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> India has raced past <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, which has 95,000 sellers on board. 
 
Amazon India’s aggressive and lenient strategy to add sellers on its platform is going to help the online marketplace in the upcoming festive season. 
 To have more sellers, Amazon India started <keyword id="3249499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Tatkal">Amazon Tatkal</keyword> services through which merchants were added in an hour. Not only this, Amazon India also lowered commissions it charges merchants for selling on its marketplace in June, at a time when Flipkart raised its commission and tweaked its policies. 
 
"We have 120,000 sellers on the platform now, of which 20,000 sellers came in the last 5-6 weeks," Gopal Pillai, general manager of seller services at Amazon India, told ET. That's an increase from about 45,000 merchants at the end of 2015. Amazon also has 16,000 sellers who are part of its global programme, with some overlap between Amazon.in and Amazon.com. 
 
Under Amazon Tatkal, the executives travelling travelled across 50 cities in studios-on-wheels that allowed sellers to sign up instantly. 
 
"Amazon Tatkal created huge awareness through word-of-mouth. What helped was that many sellers coming on board through this progamme are getting sales from the very next day," said Pillai. 
 
Amazon India has also launched Seller Cafe programme in 24 cities to onboard more sellers and resolve their issues. 
 
"They let us contact customers directly and let us decide the refund amount in case of returns. The option for self-shipping is also helpful when we need to send orders to remote locations," a spokesman for the All India Online Vendors' Association, a grouping of about 1,000 online sellers, told ET. 
 
For other sellers, however, Flipkart is still the preferred platform. "Almost 70% of our sellers give first priority to selling on Flipkart, mainly because it still sees the highest traffic and it has the most seamless payment integrity," Sanjay Thakur, spokesman for ESellerSuraksha, a group of about 1,700 online sellers, told ET. 
 Flipkart has shifted its policy on improving the quality of its top 100 merchants. <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, third behind Amazon India in terms of sales, has more than 300,000 sellers.

<keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> wants to make the most of the upcoming festive season and is organising grooming sessions for its sellers in this regard. 
 
Amazon India is organising boot camps for sellers so that they are prepared for the huge rush. The main season starts with Durga Puja and ends with Bhai Dhuj with Karva Chauth and Diwali in between. 
 
During the last festive season, Amazon India witnessed a three-to-five-fold increase in sales. 
 
"We want to invite top-performing sellers to this event so that they can connect with us. This is also an opportunity for us to discuss how excited we are about the upcoming festive season so that they are better prepared for it," Gopal Pillai, director of seller services at Amazon India, told ET. 
 
Amazon is also looking forward to customers using their new service-Prime. 
 
"Adding these products in your FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) catalogue will help you grow your sales with the right set of in-demand products. In addition to more sales, you also get an assured sum of Rs 150 for every new ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) listed and Rs 50 for bringing the existing listing in-stock," the Amazon seller reward team said in an email. 
 
Apart from Amazon, other ecommerce companies are also going to go aggressive during the festive season with faster deliveries and more products on the portfolio.

To standardise the packaging process for purchases all across the country,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-pips-Snapdeal-to-become-number-2-in-online-marketplace/articleshow/52021485.cms"> Amazon India</a> is helping vendors source their packaging supplies from its online platform. 
 
As of now, only the orders that are fulfilled by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-India-MD-Amit-Agarwal-is-now-a-part-of-Global-CEO-Jeff-Bezoss-core-team/articleshow/51995278.cms">Amazon </a>are sent from the company's warehouse with Amazon-branded packaging. For rest of the orders, vendors use their own packaging. 
 
Under this new initiative, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-India-is-getting-top-notch-people-to-head-competitive-segments-goes-on-hiring-spree/articleshow/51150515.cms">vendors </a>would be buying Amazon-branded packaging materials such as corrugated boxes, thermocol balls and air filled packets on the portal and use them to deliver the products in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazons-second-largest-global-delivery-centre-is-coming-upin-Hyderabad/articleshow/51252434.cms">standard packaging</a>. 
 "We have been piloting this for a while now and realised that it ensures consistency, enhances shopping experience and facilitates easy delivery and exchange," Gopal Pillai, director of seller services, <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> told ET. "A quality experience results in repeat business for sellers, enabling them to grow their businesses sustainably," he added. 
 
The reason behind this move could also be the high return rate for spoiled merchandise because of poor packaging. Not only this, when 20,000 sellers would buy packaging material online, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-India-is-getting-top-notch-people-to-head-competitive-segments-goes-on-hiring-spree/articleshow/51150515.cms">Amazon </a>is sure to see a surge in its revenues.

All products from Amazon will now have standardised packaging

<keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> has planned to offer loans to the key vendors that sell on its portal so that they don’t shift loyalties to its rivals Flipkart and Snapdeal. 
 <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> India is inviting its qualified merchants to join its lending programme under which a seller can apply for short-term working capital loans so that he can be able to buy more inventories and increase his sales. 
 
"Access to working capital is the biggest hurdle for sellers. With this we are minimising the fiction and barriers for the sellers to gloans and helping them focus on growing their business on our platform," Gopal Pillai, general manager, seller services at Amazon India, told ET. 
 
The pilot programme was launched by Amazon in September last year, when it disbursed loans of crores of rupees to hundreds of SMEs. The loans were given through its third-party seller financing platform, Capital First, an NBFC based in Mumbai. 
 
The loans, which range between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 crore at 13 to 15% ROI, are given for a period of four to six months. Rival companies like Paytm, Snapdeal and Flipkart have also launched similar loan schemes. 
 
"This is a way in which the ecommerce firms are addressing a pain point of low inventory. Now that sellers will keep good stock, their sales will increase and bring them growth," Harminder Sahini, founder and managing director of Wazir Advisors, told ET. 
 
"Since these are giant companies, the chances of financial risks are low as SMEs would not want to lose a big business partner," he said.
