A couple of days back, details about <keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword>’s upcoming AI “agent", <keyword id="20215528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jarvis" source="keywords">Jarvis</keyword>, had surfaced. The tech world couldn’t stop talking about the upcoming AI product from Google, which can apparently take over your web browser and perform basic tasks on your behalf. If this sounds like something out of a sci-fi film to you, you are not alone. Now, discussions around Jarvis are on yet again. This time, because the AI agent was accidentally leaked by Google, thereby confirming its existence. <h2>Google’s Jarvis gets leaked accidentally</h2> According to a report by The Information, Google’s Jarvis surfaced early after accidentally appearing on the Chrome Web Store for the public. However, even though the extension was available, it could not be used due to permission issues. The report added that Jarvis’ web page was then taken down. But by this time, news about Google’s little leak had already spread online. The Information also reported that according to insiders, Jarvis was initially meant for a controlled, internal pilot at Google, with plans for a public debut further down the line. However, this accidental exposure has ramped up interest and speculation around when Google might officially launch the AI. <h2>About Jarvis</h2> The emerging AI prototype, intended for a December reveal, hints at a groundbreaking future for AI-driven productivity tools. Unlike typical voice assistants, Jarvis aims to be a more advanced digital companion, with the potential to browse, research, and even purchase items online—virtually performing web-based tasks with minimal human intervention. In other words, users might soon experience Jarvis handling everyday online chores, from making purchases to retrieving specific information online, cutting down time on tedious interactions. It is to be noted that Google hasn't announced the project officially and is yet to give out any details. As mentioned already, The Information reports that we can meet Jarvis as early as December this year.

It was the biggest thing in consumer technology since the iPad. (Mostly because nothing had come out since the iPad.)
Venture capitalists were announcing <a href="http://www.glasscollective.com/">plans to invest in Glass-specific startups</a>. Google held a contest to raffle off the rights to own Glass, and people were submitting applications. Journalists were in love with Glass, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pogue-forget-the-iphone-5-its-a-weird-google-gadget-that-really-excites-me-2012-9">thought it was going to be the future of computing</a>.
This year, the sentiment has swung 180-degrees, and is now overwhelmingly negative.
When Google was selling Glass to the general public for the first time ever, Bianca Bosker at Huffington Post <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/15/google-glass-problems_n_5153505.html?utm_hp_ref=tw">wrote a thorough take down of Glass</a>:
We always knew Glass, with its vaguely orthodontic design, would be a tough sell. Yet in the thirteen months since the device first appeared on American brows, Google has actually lost ground: Getting people to embrace the Internet-connected head camera has become more difficult, not less. And this is after an extended PR blitz...
In the beginning, Glass' biggest sin was looking weird. Now, Glass is both physically unattractive and morally suspect.
Bosker isn't the only person underwhelmed by Glass. Robert Scoble, Google's first major Glass evangelist confessed that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-employees-google-glass-2014-1">Google Glass is doomed for this year</a>. (He's optimistic that Google fixes problems with Glass by 2016, which is an eternity in technology.)
Jeff Jarvis, one of the biggest Google defenders in the world, <a href="" expensive20nightmare="">"hates" Glass</a>. He calls it an "expensive nightmare".
What happened in a year that made so many people sour on the product?
A bunch of stuff: People have been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/i-was-assaulted-for-wearing-google-glass-2014-4">attacked for wearing Glass</a>. Glass is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-bar-bans-google-glass-2014-3">getting banned in bars</a>. The product has seen limited improvements. Developers haven't made any breakthrough applications. 
I think all of this can be traced back to one crucial mistake with the launch of Glass - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-picks-8000-people-to-try-glass-2013-3">it</a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-picks-8000-people-to-try-glass-2013-3"> limited the release for Glass</a>.
Google only allowed a select group of "Explorers" get Glass for $1,500 last year. Initially, it was a great marketing ploy. Everyone wanted it, it got lots of buzz. But, Glass needed to be widely deployed all at once for the product to succeed. 
It needed to be widely deployed for two reasons: 
1. Google Glass was a new, weird looking technology. If lots of people bought it all at once, it would be less weird. Today, people with Glass on their face are attacked unfairly because it's assumed that only elitist rich tech jerks wear Glass. If this was always for the masses, that might not be the assumption. 
2. Google didn't really know why Glass existed. Its best guess was that it made it easier to get email notifications and it took photos quickly. There's nothing wrong with not really knowing why your product is great. Even Apple didn't have a 100% understanding of why the iPad was cool when it launched the iPad. Google was hoping that by sending out Glass to a select group of users it would figure out Glass's best usage. But, if it had sent it out to more people, it would have more users figuring the product out. 
I would guess the reason Google didn't sell Glass to the public right away is that it wasn't ready for a mass roll out. But, if that was the case, then why not just wait? Why pre-announce a half-baked product? 
At first, Google seemed clever for doing a slow roll out, and generating buzz. Instead, it backfired, and today Glass is a product that has lost its appeal.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Mark Zuckerberg / Facebook / MSQRDMark Zuckerberg has described his AI assistant as "kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man."</div></div></div>It's been an unusual year in tech: Apart from maybe <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-spectacles-glasses-review-2016-11">Snapchat's elusive Spectacles</a>, there hasn't been a truly game-changing, mass-market piece of technology that's totally dominated the conversation.Instead, the biggest companies in tech, especially Facebook, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, spent their 2016 hyping up something a little more abstract: their ongoing quests to build a so-called "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nick-bostrom-deepmind-is-winning-the-ai-race-2016-10">general artificial intelligence</a>," and all the extra smarts they're adding to the product while they're at it. Just in the last few weeks, Google <a href="https://deepmind.com/blog/open-sourcing-deepmind-lab/">released a bunch of code from its famed DeepMind</a> as free open source. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-aml-head-joaquin-candela-interview-2016-11">Facebook issued a series of videos explaining, in simple terms, exactly how artificial intelligence works</a>. Microsoft <a href="http://blogs.microsoft.com/next/?p=70286#sm.00000rkmggcib8eb0vsf10nbz0zaq">released a huge set of data to help train virtual assistants like Siri and Cortana</a>. And <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2016/11/30/aws-reinvent-2016/">Amazon announced Amazon Lex</a>, a service for developers to build Alexa-like intelligence to their apps.If you ask the CEOs of these companies, it's all about building new features and functions to their apps - from facial recognition in Google Photos and instantly translating comments on Facebook, to more subtle things, like using AI to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-research-peter-lee-interview-2016-8">intelligently route internet traffic and make it possible to virtually "teleport" with Microsoft HoloLens</a>.Still, it's a weird thing for these companies to put so much public focus on. No matter how hyped the tech community gets for artificial intelligence, it's still very much abstract to a broad audience. You can't touch it, feel it, wear it, or, really, buy it. Unless you follow the ebb and flow of tech closely, it all feels like very "inside baseball" kind of stuff.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">TEDThe Microsoft HoloLens uses AI behind the scenes to optimize the internet connection, allowing for virtual "teleportation" like this trip to Mars.</div></div></div>And yet, beyond the imminent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-world-robot-conference-beijing-artificial-intelligence-human-like-2016-10">promise of truly intelligent robots</a>, there are some very practical reasons why Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and everybody else is talking about artificial intelligence right here, right now, in just the last several months.<h2>Reason #1: Recruiting</h2>If you ask the biggest tech companies in the world, the rise of artificial intelligence is just as big a deal, if not more so, than the transition from desktop PCs to mobile computing.Google CEO Sundar Pichai, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sundar-pichai-wants-to-build-a-personal-google-for-every-user-2016-10">very vocal fan of AI</a>, has said that he envisions a world in which every user gets their own personal Google. Facebook and Microsoft, too, have made a big point of showing how artificial intelligence is improving their own apps, enabling stuff (like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-powerpoint-gets-morph-and-designer-2015-11">helping you design better PowerPoints</a>) that would never have been otherwise possible.It all points to a brighter future, where all of our photos, our documents, our messages, and, in general, our lives, are more organized, more intelligent, and overall better, even as we increase our reliance on software for everything from productivity to shopping to getting around.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Reuters/Stephen LamGoogle CEO Sundar Pichai</div></div></div>Cool. There's just one problem: "You can't hire enough people who are machine learning experts in the world," Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, the head of Facebook's Applied Machine Learning (AML) research division, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-aml-head-joaquin-candela-interview-2016-11">recently put it to Business Insider</a>.Silicon Valley firms are already insanely competitive for programmers; top-tier AI experts are an even hotter commodity, making them ripe targets for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jia-li-snapchat-snap-inc-google-machine-learning-2016-11">poaching from one tech giant to another</a>. All of this hype, and all of this spotlight on artificial intelligence, then, is less about pushing the concept to consumers, and more about getting developers excited. That's not just developers working today; it's college students and self-taught individuals.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">AP/Jeff ChiuAmazon Echo</div></div></div>It's in Facebook's best interests, and Google's, and everyone else's best interest to get these folks interested in AI - especially since, thanks in no small part to pop culture, AI has a reputation as something that's practically magic, or at least obscenely difficult to learn. In reality, AI is just applied math and statistics. And you can learn math. But if the next generation of coders is intimidated by the notion of AI, that's a problem for Google, Facebook and all the other tech giants planning their future on AI.Put even more simply: If you want a job in tech in a few years, spend some time learning programming and statistics and invest some time in playing with the AI code that Microsoft, Facebook, Google, et al, have freely released.<h2>Reason #2: The cloud wars</h2>This one applies especially to Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, usually considered the first, second, and third place players in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-amazon-is-so-hard-to-topple-in-the-cloud-and-where-everybody-else-falls-2015-10">cloud computing market</a>, respectively.In cloud computing, startups and Fortune 500 companies alike pay as they go for access to functionally unlimited supercomputing power. You don't need much more than a credit card to get started.Amazon Web Services is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-12-billion-annual-revenue-2016-10">leading the pack among public cloud providers, and by all indications, it's not even close</a>. There's even a chance it'll become Amazon's biggest revenue driver within only a few years. People just like you have found solace in the <a href="https://twitter.com/ProfJeffJarvis">Fake Jeff Jarvis Twitter account</a>. The account satirizes the current affairs of tech and media one tweet at a time.
We reached out to the real Jeff Jarvis, a noted professor and journalist, to get his take: "I can only wish it were in the hands of a better comedian. Sometime ago I did ask him to have a phone conversation. He at first agreed but then apparently wimped out."
We reached out to the creator of the account, who says while they did interact, plans for a phone conversation were never discussed or finalized.
What follows is a lightly-edited transcript of our conversation.
BUSINESS INSIDER: Do you care to disclose your true identity?
RURIK BRADBURY: Sure, I am Rurik Bradbury, a co-founder <a href="https://www.unison.com/">of the startup Unison</a>, which is a tool that makes team communication faster and more organized. Separately I have been in tech for a long time and am a skeptic of tech jargon.
BI: For the normals, who is Jeff Jarvis?
RB: Jeff Jarvis is a professor at CUNY and a well-known early blogger. His focus is on new media and the transition of the print world to online, plus the rise of social media.
BI: Why satirize the guy?
RB: He is emblematic of a fairly radical group of people who advocate for "openness" of the internet and "publicness" of what was typically private information in earlier times. Often, his positions go too far, and he ends up cheerleading for commercial entities as if they were consumer advocacy groups. He also takes aggressive positions on traditional monetization of content and paywalls (he's against it!) and the way social media can foment revolutions, like the Arab Spring (he likes that!). Jeff Jarvis talks broadly about tech, politics, journalism and more, so there is plenty to satirize.
BI: What are some of the more ridiculous things he's actually said in real life?
RB: Here are some choice phrases.
"Creepy is sometimes just a synonym for the unfamiliar."
"Owning pipelines, people, products or even intellectual property is no longer the key to success – openness is."
"Google is the new world’s ambassador to the old world."
"Each time you don’t share, a relationship loses its wings."
"Nobody wants to be in the business of stuff anymore...Google's economy is more appealing."
"The link changes everything."
BI: What are some of your prouder tweets and why?
RB: What I enjoyed the most was creating a sub-vocabulary for internet gurus. For example the concepts of "nextification," "herdsourcing," "Change 2.0," or "Journalism 3.0." As part of the character, I created a fictional technology "unconference" called mogadishu:reinvent. My favorite tweets are about Syria or the Arab Spring, and imply a connection between mundane tech announcements and significant political shifts, as if Silicon Valley product launches were directly driving the fortunes of President Assad, or the Syrian rebels. For example:
"Good news for the Syrian rebels: <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> released a new iPhone client."
"Perfect timing for the new Nexus 7 tablet – should help keep Morsy’s radicalism in check."
"I wonder: could the threat of Twitter Cards bring Kim Jong Un back to the negotiating table?"
BI: Any idea what Jarvis thinks of your Twitter account?
RB: I have heard that he greatly dislikes it, but I don’t know this for sure.
BI: Has he ever tried to communicate with you?
RB: We have interacted a couple of times on Twitter, notably . He also contacted me once via DM asking to talk. Did not talk again since then, however.
BI: Why are you so cavalier about your true identity?
RB: I don’t feel like there is anything to hide, and I don’t even feel the parody is especially mean. To be fair to Jeff Jarvis, he is actually quite different from the parody character: he makes up far fewer silly phrases and I like/agree with plenty of his comments on internet life. The @profjeffjarvis character is a much broader spoof of internet guruism. It mixes Jeff Jarvis, Clay Shirky, Tim Ferriss, and Seth Godin, among others.
BI: What can you tell us about your actual life?
RB: I’m a Brit and have been in New York for about ten years. I live in Harlem with my wife and kids. My main hobby is chasing our two boys around, trying to stop them breaking things.
BI: When can we expect news of the Fake Jeff Jarvis book deal?
RB: A few people asked about it, but I’m too busy with Unison to extend my satire side project further. Also I think the audience might be a bit too niche – it’s very "inside baseball." On the other, Fake Jeff Jarvis might ask, "is niche the new mass-market?"
BI: Any parting words of wisdom from Fake Jeff Jarvis?
RB: Always be nextifying your platform.
