Search giant <keyword id="693389" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> is keen to promote the Indian SME segment and plans to get online some 50,000 <keyword id="6375845" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-and-medium-enterprises">small and medium enterprises</keyword> in <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>, by the end of 2014. As part of <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword>’s national campaign called India, Get Your Business Online, this initiative will offer free websites and hosting services to Gujarat-based <keyword id="44779" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SMEs">SMEs</keyword>, in a bid to bridge the connectivity divide that hinders small businesses from accessing the global market. 
 Google India and HostGator are also involved in a special project in which the partners explored traditional industries like textile, jewellery and artefacts, located in the popular markets of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot. In addition to developing websites for 5,000 small businesses under this project, Google India also created <keyword id="97416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google-maps">Google Maps</keyword> listings and Google+ business pages for these firms. They can also make use of 24x7 customer support to manage their websites and get free online advertising credit that can be used on Google search to promote their businesses online. 
 Commenting on the project, <keyword id="249393" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajan-Anandan">Rajan Anandan</keyword>, vice-president and managing director of Google India, said, “The initiative aims to boost the SME ecosystem by giving them a simple, effective and free platform to get their business online. We aim to get 50,000 SMEs online, which will dramatically change the business landscape and opportunities for SMEs in Gujarat. 
 
“Our research has shown that SMEs, who use the Internet, see revenue growth of 51% and raise in profits by 49%. Gujarat already represents 10% of the total Internet population in the country and houses many export-oriented businesses. By being present on the Internet, they can make the world their market and continue to boost the economy of the country,” he added.

While dismissing the complaint, the fair trade regulator said, "The Commission finds that no prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of Section 4 of the Act is made out against <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> in the instant matter". Section 4 of the Competition Act, deals with the abuse of dominant position. The ruling came on a complaint filed by Rachna Khaira (informant) accusing Google of granting exclusive access to Truecaller to share private contact information while prohibiting other apps from doing the same. Further, she alleged that this practice has distorted the market and created a monopoly for Truecaller. The informant also alleged that Google's developer policy prohibits unauthorised disclosure of non-public contacts, and Truecaller's privacy policy, to which she argued allowed the sharing of such information. Further, Khaira alleged that Google favoured Truecaller due to commercial arrangements involving Google's cloud storage and advertising services. The regulator after reviewing submissions from both Google and Khaira, found that the informant's claims were unsubstantiated. "...the allegation of the informant remains unsubstantiated and despite sufficient opportunity, the informant has not provided any evidence to prima facie establish that Google is according either preferential treatment to Truecaller or resorting to discriminatory practises by allowing access to user's contact data to Truecaller while denying the same to the competing applications," CCI said in an order on June 24. The competition watchdog also addressed the commercial relationship allegations against the tech major, stating that mere commercial relationships do not imply preferential treatment unless proven. However, the regulator found no evidence suggesting that these changes granted Truecaller a competitive advantage over its rivals. The request for interim relief by the informant to temporarily block Truecaller from operating on the Play Store was also rejected by the competition watchdog."The Commission finds that no prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of Section 4 of the Act is made out against Google in the instant matter. Accordingly, the Information is ordered to be closed," the fair trade regulator said.

Competition Commission dismisses complaint against Google India

Gupta had earlier worked with top companies like Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel. His most recent stint was as the MD of Star and Disney India, where he also led the digital evolution of Hotstar. Social media giant <keyword id="736869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook-India">Facebook India</keyword>'s revenues grew 43 per cent year-on-year to about Rs 1,277.3 crore in 2019-20, while its net profit more than doubled to Rs 135.7 crore, as per regulatory documents. Its total income was Rs 893.4 crore in the financial year ended March 31, 2019, according to Registrar of Companies filing - shared by market intelligence firm Tofler. The net profit increased by over 107 per cent to Rs 135.7 crore in FY20 as compared to Rs 65.3 crore in the preceding fiscal, it added. When contacted, a Facebook spokesperson said India is an important market for the company. "...we are deeply committed to being an ally in the country's socio-economic transformation. We will continue to invest in our India operations while working with small and large businesses to help in their economic recovery post the pandemic," the spokesperson added. In November, tech giant Google had made a similar filing that showed its revenues from India had grown 34.8 per cent to about Rs 5,593.8 crore in 2019-20 over the previous financial year. Its net profit was higher by about 23.9 per cent at Rs 586.2 crore in FY20. Facebook India acts as a non-exclusive reseller of advertising inventory to customers in India. It also provides IT/ITeS, marketing and other support services to the Facebook group. According to the filing, Facebook's employee benefit expense grew 63.3 per cent to Rs 299.3 crore in FY20 from Rs 183.2 crore in the preceding fiscal. The company paid an equalisation levy of Rs 369.5 crore in the fiscal under review as against a payment of Rs 118.2 crore in the fiscal ended March 2019. The Indian government charges a 6 per cent equalisation tax on gross payment received by global digital companies from Indian residents for online advertising. <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> paid an equalisation levy of Rs 611.1 crore in FY20. India is among the biggest markets for Facebook, which also operates photo-sharing platform Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp. Around 2.5 billion people globally use Facebook's family of apps daily, while there are over 10 million active advertisers across its services. The three non-profits are Samhita-CGF, Pratham Education Foundation, and SwaTaleem Foundation, who will each receive funding to scale their projects in areas of skills development, education, and financial support, the tech giant said in a statement. "We're extremely proud that three local recipients have been selected as part of this Challenge," it added. The three non-profits are part of the 34 funding recipients of the Google.org Impact Challenge for Women and Girls from across 19 countries. These were selected among 7,800 applications. Samhita-CGF's will get an $$800,000 grant for its "REVIVE Alliance" project, which aims to provide interest-free "returnable" grants to 10,000 women who do not have access to traditional finance support systems to invest in digitisation and cover their business needs. Pratham will receive $1 million in funding to connect more than 7,000 rural, unemployed young women to jobs in the beauty and health industry and the male-dominated automotive, mechanics, and electrical industries. With a $700,000 grant, SwaTaleem and Humane Warriors will educate marginalised girls and women in rural India through a creative, low-tech platform. Through an app and automated audio files played on speaker phones, it circumvents the need for the Internet while providing girls access to traditional subjects such as maths and science, as well as socio-emotional and financial literacy training such as how to open a bank account. Google further stated that to support and advance these investments, Google.org, Google's Accelerator team, and Women Techmakers will run a four-month global virtual accelerator programme where highly skilled Googlers will provide pro bono support that includes training, networking, and mentorship. "As we continue to invest in efforts to extend opportunities to women to reach their potential, and enhance their lives, and that of their families, communities, and the economy, partnerships with organisations such as these will be key. We're encouraged by the variety of approaches they are taking and their ongoing impact, and excited to support their work where it matters most," Google said.

Google grants $2.5 million to three Indian non-profits working with women and girl empowerment

The search engine giant said that it expects to roll out information on vaccination centres in the coming weeks. So far, 2.6 crore doses of corona vaccine have been administered in the country since the drive began on January 16 after approval for 'Covishield' and 'Covaxin'. "As Covid-19 continues to challenge our communities, we remain committed to doing all we can to assist the country's health agencies at this key juncture of the pandemic, where the successful rollout of these large-scale vaccinations can help us collectively turn a corner and see a much-needed return to normalcy," Google India said in a statement. The company said it has been working closely with the Rapid Risk Response team at the Union Health Ministry that is tracking misinformation using social media listening tools across region and languages, and countering it with science-based messaging on vaccines and pandemic response overall. As the government activates the processes involved in implementing large-scale vaccinations against Covid-19, Google India has put in efforts to surface authoritative and timely information for people asking vaccine-related questions. Google in partnership with the Indian Meteorological Department has launched ‘Weather Alerts’ for extreme climatic conditions. Users will get weather alerts like ‘Severe Rainfall Alert’ or for weather conditions like heat wave, cold wave and thunderstorms. Google will display these alerts on the weather widget on Android phones. These alerts will also appear on top of Google Search results in red. It will also show alerts for less severe weather conditions in Search. Users will also be able to ask Google Assistant for weather reports and get spoken alerts. Another major area that Google is doubling down in India is floods. The company is working with local authorities on developing flood related efforts. Levi said that Google has doubled the alert lead time for floods, and that it has covered 175 of the local affected population. Google has also sent out 110 million notifications which reached 20 million affected people at the start of the monsoon season this year, Levi added. Google has also partnered with the Centre of Pollution Control Board in India to help users get the latest updates on air quality information. By searching for air quality information in Google Search, users will see detailed updates. The search results will show places with their air quality index on Google Maps, and also highlight areas with the worst air quality at present. Google has been working with local authorities for its climate-related efforts in India, and it has seen some results in the past few years. Levi said that over 65% of users in India who received weather alerts took action. In August this year, Google alerted people in Sahebganj which is located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar about incoming floods. Levi said this information helped people safely evacuate the place in due time. More than 1500 Indians lost their lives due to extreme weather in 2020 — Google wants to lend a hand to fix it

New Delhi, Even as tech giant <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> continues to cut down staff, a sacked Indian employee stated that the layoffs are not based on performance. In a LinkedIn post, Google India employee Animesh Swain stated that pink slips were also served to employees with highest ratings. The list also has names who were recently awarded promotions. "The people who managed to stay (including me) are not necessarily better than those laid off," Swain was quoted as saying in the post. Another employee Gurugram-based Aakriti Walia, working as a Google Cloud programme manager, was laid off just 10 minutes before a meeting. "The 'access denied' message on my system left me numb as I was preparing for my meeting just 10 mins away," Walia posted on the professional networking platform. "As I celebrated my 5-year Googleversary just a few days ago, little did I know it would be my last," she said. Earlier, Jennifer Vaden Barth, a creative Strategist at Google, said that the "layoff impacted very talented and highly rated professionals". Barth, who had worked at Google for 15 years said that "layoffs hit women particularly hard, especially women over 40". Meanwhile, in a bid to further cut costs, Google has even asked employees who return to work to share their work desks with a "partner" to maximise office space. Google India has recently terminated more than 400 employees. The layoffs at Google India were part of the larger job cuts that impacted 12,000 workers globally at the company. Denying that the layoffs were done "randomly", Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai had said earlier that he is "deeply sorry" for reducing the workforce. In an email to employees, Pichai said he takes "full responsibility for the decisions that led us here". The layoffs at Google's parent company were expected amid the deepening funding winter that has hit companies of all sizes in the global slowdown and recession fears. New Delhi, <keyword id="45395" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> on Wednesday clarified that <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword> which is set to kill the peer-to-peer payments facility on its <keyword id="1616700" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Web-App">web app</keyword> in January along with adding a fee for <keyword id="2817966" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="instant-money-transfers">instant money transfers</keyword> is specifically for the US market and will not impact its apps in India. The tech giant has released a notice on the web app that notifies users that the site will no longer work from January next year. <keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> Pay is set to kill the peer-to-peer payments facility on its web app in January and is going to add a fee for instant money transfers, reported 9to5Google. In a statement shared with IANS, Google India said: "These charges and fees are specific to the US and do not apply to the Google Pay or Google Pay for Business apps in India." Google clarified on a support page that the original Google Pay app will stop working in January in the US. "Starting early in 2021, you won't be able to use pay.google.com to send and receive money from other people. To send and receive money, use the new Google Pay app," the company has informed its users in the US. Google Pay will also add a fee on instant money transfers for its users in the country. "It can take 1-3 business days when you transfer money to your bank account. Debit card transfers are usually instant. There is a fee of 1.5 per cent or $.31 (whichever is higher), when you transfer out money with a debit card," the company said on its support page.

Kango’s LinkedIn profile <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mayoori-kango-1456a88/?originalSubdomain=in">mentions</a> that the 36-year-old joined Google India two months ago. Before joining Google India, she was working as a managing director at global marketing agency Performics. She was also previously the chief digital officer at marketing and advertising agency Zenith, and led the delta search business at global agency Digitas, now part of the Publicis Groupe, according to her LinkedIn profile. "I am super excited to be part of Google and lead partnerships with Dentsu Aegis Network and Publicis Groupe. I am looking forward to applying my experience of over a decade in the industry in the agency realm to grow these partnerships further. It is a wonderful opportunity to be part of this incredible team and I am looking forward to the next phase of my professional life," Kango told IANS. Although she had completely different preferences for her career during her teenage but later pursued a career in digital marketing, she told the Indian Express. At the age of 15, she chose acting over joining the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — a prestigious college in India for Engineering. She then made her acting debut in 1995 with the film "Naseem", based on the Babri Masjid demolition, and rose to fame with her performance in Mahesh Bhatt's "Papa Kehte Hai," which also starred Jugal Hansraj. Kango appeared in films like "Betaabi," "Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet" and "Badal" and was also seen in TV shows like "Kaahin Kissii Roz," "Kittie Party", "Kkusum" and "Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat." Kango subsequently moved to the US in 2003 and graduated with an MBA degree in marketing and finance from City University of New York-Baruch College. She told the Times of India that she is often meets industry people who are surprised to see a former Bollywood actor in a corporate career and she had to prove all the people all the people in every meeting that there is no relation between intelligence and acting. A champion for education, she recommends potential actors to finish their education before joining Bollywood.
