New Delhi, Mar 25 () Cigarettes and tobacco major Godfrey Phillips India have suspended manufacturing at its three factories in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, according to a top company official. Terming the current situation as "extraordinary times", Godfrey Phillips India (GPI) CEO Bhisham Wadhera said the company is prepared to take a hit for four weeks on its business. "As an organisation what is of utmost importance to us is our employees' health and safety. In fact about 10 days ago, we announced work from home just to ensure that nobody gets exposed, much before the lockdown," Wadhera told . He further said:"Apart from work from home, we also shut our manufacturing facilities so that people are safe and we are actually tracking them on a daily basis. "People are writing in to us to say if they or their families are having any symptoms. I think that's going to be our prime concern even going forward." GPI has two cigarette manufacturing facilities -- one in Ghaziabad and one just outside Mumbai. it also has a chewing pan masala unit at Ghaziabad close to its cigarette factory. "All three have been shut," Wadhera said, adding the company has about 1,100 employees on its rolls and around 800-900 on contracts and other third party associates. There has not been a single job cut. There is no compromise or cost austerity as far as employees needs are concerned, he asserted. The company manufacturers and sells cigarette brands such as Four Square, Red &amp; White, Cavanders and Stellar. It also has the license to manufacture and sell Marlboro brand in India. On the financial impact of the pandemic on the company's business, he said,"See, I don't think we're too worried about the impact now because there's bound to be one, not only for us, but the entire country. Everybody's going to get impacted severely." Wadhera further said: "We are assessing that already but as I said health and safety is of paramount importance to us and if we have to take a hit for four weeks, so be it...These are extraordinary times and we have to have extraordinary measures to deal with them." He further said along with the impact of high taxation, "economic slowdown and the virus spread, I think it it too early to say what is going to happen because it has really been a double whammy for all of us." When asked if the company was looking forward to reopen the factories as soon as the lockdown is over, he said,"Maybe in a day or two after the lockdown is over we would look to start manufacturing, depending on the situation. Coronavirus: Godfrey Phillips India shuts three factories temporarily

New Delhi, Feb 7 () Cigarette maker Godfrey Phillips India on Friday reported a 39.16 per cent increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 113.89 crore in the third quarter ended December 2019. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 81.84 crore in the same quarter last fiscal, Godfrey Phillips India (GPI) said in a regulatory filing. Total revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 797.22 crore as compared with Rs 679.33 crore in the year-ago period, it added. During the third quarter, cigarettes, tobacco and related products clocked revenue of Rs 702.24 crore as compared with Rs 619.45 crore a year ago. On the other hand, retail and related products had revenue of Rs 93.36 crore as against Rs 77.02 crore in the third quarter last fiscal, it said. RKL RVK

The world’s largest tobacco company allegedly made indirect payments to its manufacturing partner, Godfrey Phillips, to produce its iconic Marlboro cigarettes, according to <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/us-pmi-india-exclusive/exclusive-philip-morris-paid-for-india-manufacturing-despite-ban-on-foreign-investment-documents-idINKCN1QN0TR">a Reuters</a> report. As per internal invoices, bills and legal arrangements dated between 2009 and 2018, Philip Morris reportedly struck an exclusive local manufacturing deal with Godfrey Phillips while maintaining its majority-owned wholesale and branding operations in the country. To the authorities and Indian consumers, it looked like Philip Morris had outsourced manufacturing to Godfrey Phillips on a contract basis, when in reality, the Marlboro maker had paid for and covered the costs of local manufacturing. These included costs of equipment like barcode scanners and cigarette-making machines - which is highly unusual when a company “outsources” manufacturing. The indirect nature of the payments could have allowed Philip Morris to skirt authorities. Given that it focuses on direct investment, there is some ambiguity in the FDI policy regarding the indirect payment for manufacturing expenses. Pratibha Jain, a partner at Mumbai’s Nishith Desai Associates, told Reuters that the FDI law did not explicitly ban such indirect payments, especially when they’re made through invoices. In an email to Reuters, R. Venkatesh, Philip Morris’ country director for corporate affairs, said the company was in compliance with FDI rules. To determine if there is an actual case against Philip Morris for violating FDI rules, ndian authorities will likely have to investigate the commercial and profit-sharing arrangement between the two companies. This wouldn’t be the first time Philip Morris has run into problems with the Indian government. In 2017, India’s health ministry <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-exclusive-india-threatens-philip-morris-with-punitive-action-over-alleged-violations-2017-8">reprimanded</a> the company over its marketing tactics such as advertising at kiosks, the handing out of free cigarettes during nightlife events and television promotions. Here’s how Marlboro maker Philip Morris exploited a loophole in India’s foreign investment laws

New Delhi, Nov 14 () Cigarette maker Godfrey Phillips India Ltd on Thursday reported a 56.97 per cent increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 113.54 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2019.
 The company had reported a net profit of Rs 72.33 crore in the July-September quarter a year ago, Godfrey Phillips said in a BSE filing.
 Its total revenue from operations rose 12.91 per cent to Rs 750.81 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 664.92 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal.
 Godfrey Phillips' total expenses also rose 14.28 per cent to Rs 652.08 crore during the quarter as against Rs 570.59 crore in the year-ago period.
 The company also said that its board in a meeting "has approved appointment of Dr Bina Modi as the President, MD of the company for a period of 5 years wef from November 14."
 Bina Modi, is the mother of Samir Modi, executive director of the company, it added.
 She has been associated with the company as a non-executive and non-independent director since April 7, 2014.
 Her appointment "will be subject to approval of the shareholders by way of postal ballot."
 The announcement comes after the demise of President &amp; Managing Director K K Modi on November 2, 2019.

While the need for regulations around tobacco is to be lauded as it impacts the health of millions, in a year where the government has to ensure its cash flow remains strong, it remains to be seen whether Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hurt the likes of India’s big tobacco companies, ITC. For ITC, cigarette sales alone account for 46% of its total revenue – a whopping $6 billion in FY20. The Indian government has proposed several changes to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. Here are the proposed changes: <ul><li>Tobacco products will not be sold to persons under the age of 21. </li><li>Sale of tobacco products will be prohibited within 100 yards to 100 metres of an educational institution.</li><li>Retail sale of loose cigarettes will not be allowed. </li><li>Retailers will have to obtain a mandatory license, which will be subject to annual renewal. </li><li>All shops selling tobacco products will have to set up advertising and promotional content to show the harmful effects of tobacco.</li></ul>The changes are set to come into force from February 1, 2021. The changes are proposed to promote healthy living as almost 267 million Indians today consume tobacco in one form or the other. However, the proposed implementation of these products has already seen a dissent from India’s retailers and tobacco industry. According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/india-tobacco-law/indias-proposed-changes-to-anti-smoking-law-face-objections-from-tobacco-industry-idINKBN29B1L4">Reuters report</a>, India’s tobacco companies will vehemently oppose the new rules, some of whom have already begun to see the impact in the stock market. One of India’s biggest tobacco companies that generates <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/the-33-billion-itc-one-of-indias[%E2%80%A6]ks-seems-to-have-turned-a-corner/articleshow/79641456.cms">nearly ₹2 billion in cash every year</a>, ITC, has been an underperformer in the stock market till about two months ago when it saw a recovery in its share price. <div type="image" title="itc stock" msid="80340429" hostid="261"></div> The Federation of Retailers Association of India had also appealed to the Prime Minister to roll back the changes proposed under COTPA. The association said that the changes were aimed at destroying small retailers without really impacting India’s big retailers. “By making age old trade practices like selling loose cigarettes a cognizable offence and an imprisonment of 7 years for small violations makes small traders look like heinous criminals. Compared to a 2-year imprisonment for extortion or for dangerous driving that can cause death, this is the extreme of the extremes. This puts paan, bidi and cigarette sellers in the same crime list category as a person voluntarily throwing acid on someone or causing death by negligence etc. How can anybody be so insensitive while drafting the amendment towards poor, marginalized people who are struggling to earn their daily living?,” said Ram Asre Mishra, President, Federation of Retailers Association of India. The association also said that the change of area near an educational institution where tobacco can be sold from 100 yards to 100 metres will hurt small time retailers who will have to pack their bags and move. “As per law, we do not sell tobacco products to minors. In congested and heavily populated cities, such a restriction is impractical. Petty retailers will have to vacate their place without any means to support their livelihoods. Moreover, if a new educational institution will come up within 100 metres of the retailer’s location and he will again be asked to move,” said Gulab Chand Khoda, Joint Secretary of FRAI. Here’s why the government could be pushing to stop the retail sale of loose cigarettes. According to ITC’s annual report from 2020, it is estimated that on account of illegal cigarettes alone, revenue loss to the Government is almost ₹15,000 crore per annum. “About 68% of the total tobacco consumed in the country remains outside the tax net,” said the report. Essentially, as the report explained, the profit margin 2020 should be wider than what it was 2015, and the asset turnover (sales divided by assets) in 2020 should have improved in the last five years, while the debt should be manageable i.e. debt to equity ratio should be less than one. Most of these 17 stocks beat the Sensex by a wide margin in the amount of wealth they created for their long-term investors. “Rising margin and asset turn with healthy leverage is a sound formula for investing success,” the report said. Only two of them, both multinational engineering companies, ABB and Siemens, performed worse than the Sensex in the last five years despite having passed the Du Pont test. New Delhi, Feb 1 () Cigarette stocks on Saturday plunged up to 7 per cent, led by ITC, as tobacco related products are set to become more expensive due to hike in excise duty proposed in the Union Budget for 2020-21.
ITC tanked 6.97 per cent to close at Rs 218.85 on the BSE. During the trade, it plummeted 8.31 per cent to Rs 215.70 -- its 52-week low. It was the worst performer in the Sensex pack.
Shares of Godfrey Phillips India dropped 6.82 per cent, VST Industries 5.40 per cent and Golden Tobacco 0.18 per cent.
 A large number of items including cigarettes, chewing tobacco are set to become more expensive due to hike in taxes proposed in the Union Budget for 2020-21.
 "As a revenue measure, I propose to raise excise duty, by way of National Calamity Contingent Duty on cigarettes and other tobacco products. However, no change is being made in the duty rates of bidis," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

New Delhi, Feb 3 () Cigarette stocks continued to remain under pressure on Monday led by ITC which tumbled up to 5 per cent as tobacco related products are set to become more expensive due to hike in excise duty proposed in the Union Budget for 2020-21.
 Shares of ITC dropped 5.09 per cent to close at Rs 207.70 on the BSE.
 VST Industries declined 1.48 per cent and Godfrey Phillips India fell 0.86 per cent.
 Cigarette stocks on Saturday had also plunged up to 7 per cent, led by ITC.
 A large number of items including cigarettes, chewing tobacco are set to become more expensive due to hike in taxes proposed in the Union Budget for 2020-21.

 While presenting the Budget on Saturday, the finance minister proposed to increase the National Calamity Contingency Duty on cigarettes, hookah, chewing tobacco, snuff and tobacco extracts and essence.
 On increase in excise duty on cigarettes and tobacco products, HDFC Securities in a report said, "This will impact ITC and other cigarette companies, however, the extent of pass through and volume impact is uncertain at this point." SUM SHW
