<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s crackdown on Chinese firms and mobile apps is "becoming increasingly unhinged" and the action is nothing but "politically-motivated crackdowns on businesses from <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>", state-run Chinese paper <keyword id="107898" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times" source="Orion">Global Times</keyword> has said. The Indian government this week banned 54 Chinese mobile applications, which are posing threat to national security. The Income Tax department on Wednesday also carried out raids at multiple premises linked to Chinese tech conglomerate Huawei across the country in connection with alleged tax evasion. The Global Times said in an editorial that after failing to gain any advantage by stirring up tension at the border with China, which drew stern responses from Chinese soldiers, "New Delhi has shifted its out-of-control jingoism toward a more vulnerable target - Chinese businesses operating in India". "Over the past several months, Indian authorities have banned dozens of Chinese mobile apps and raided local branches of many Chinese firms in shady 'tax investigations'," the editorial said late on Thursday. Chinese telecom giant <keyword id="110306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei-technologies" source="Orion">Huawei Technologies</keyword> confirmed earlier media reports that Indian tax authorities raided multiple offices of the firm and questioned its local employees. In a statement, Huawei said that it was confident that its operations in the South Asian country "are firmly compliant with all laws and regulations" and that it would "fully cooperate" with Indian authorities. "Huawei's response is standard for any business caught in such circumstances; however, let's be clear, Indian authorities' raid most likely has nothing to do with the Chinese firm's compliance issues, but has a great deal to do with the increasing hostility of officials in New Delhi toward China," read the editorial. Before Huawei, several Chinese companies, including smartphone maker <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword>, have already been targeted. In January, Xiaomi was ordered to pay 6.53 billion rupees ($87.8 million) for unpaid taxes alleged by the Indian authorities, claimed the editorial. Last month, multiple tax raids were carried out at the premises of Chinese smartphone makers in the country. The Finance Ministry issued a statement, saying that Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi's local company in India had engaged in "tax evasion" and demanded that it pay a total of Rs 6.53 billion ($88 million) in taxes owed between April 2017 and June 2020. Xiaomi denied the claim, saying that the company adheres to legal and compliant operations around the world and abides with the relevant laws and regulations of each jurisdiction in which it operates. Chinese mobile phone brands are highly popular in the Indian market, and their market share far exceeds that of local Indian brands. According to the editorial, Chinese officials have expressed concern over Indian authorities' actions against Chinese businesses and have repeatedly called on the Indian side to treat Chinese firms fairly. Commenting on India's latest raid of Huawei offices and bans on Chinese apps, a spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry on Thursday mounted a noticeably stronger response, calling the actions "a series of crackdown measures" that have seriously harmed the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese firms. "For that, China expresses serious concern," the spokesperson said. "However, though New Delhi appears to be constantly testing China's patience, Chinese officials have and will likely continue to avoid being dragged into tit-for-tat measures with India," read the editorial. "With this, we believe China will take necessary measures to protect Chinese interests overseas wherever they face discriminatory actions." India's crackdown on Chinese firms, apps getting 'increasingly unhinged',  as per China's Global Times

Terming Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s demonetisation move as "very bold", China's official media today said it was a "gamble" that would create a precedent irrespective of whether it succeeds or fails and China will draw lessons from its impact on corruption, according to the news agency. 
 "<keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword>'s move is very bold. We cannot imagine what would happen in China if the country bans its 50 and 100 yuan notes," said an editorial in the state-run <keyword id="107898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword> titled 'Modi takes a gamble with money reform'. 100 yuan is China's highest currency note. 
 
"To prevent a leak of information jeopardising the implementation of the demonetisation reform, the roll out of the plan had to be kept confidential. Modi is in a dilemma as the reform aims to render the black money useless but the process goes against the governance principle of winning support of the public before initiating a new policy," the editorial said. 
 "As more than 90 per cent of transactions in India are made with cash, banning 85 per cent of the currency in circulation brings a lot of trouble to people's daily life" sparking fierce criticism including from "former Prime Minister <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword> who termed it as organised loot", it said. 
 
"Demonetisation can crackdown on corruption and shadow economy but it is obviously unable to solve the deeper social and political issues that help breed the aforementioned problems," the editorial said. 
 
However, it stated that as far as the root causes of corruption exist, the problems will always resurface. 
 
"In other words, the Modi government wishes to turn a long and arduous reform into a one-off deal," it said. 
 
"Demonetisation is a gamble for Modi. He bon both the execution ability of the government and the tolerance level of the Indian society, hoping that the benefits of this reform can outrun the negative social impacts and low morale," the editorial said. 
 
Noting that China's reform and opening-up has been going on for nearly 40 years, the editorial said it had ups and downs but remained largely stable. 
 
"Its success is based on broad public support," it said. 
 
"The strong execution capabilities of the Communist Party of China are built on the consensus of the entire country. By observing India's reforms we will draw lessons, which would in turn help us understand our own reforms," it said.

India has stepped up its crackdown on Chinese firms over the years. The Indian government is looking into cases of alleged tax evasion by three Chinese mobile companies -- OPPO, <keyword id="2829414" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vivo-india" source="Orion">Vivo India</keyword>, and Xiaomi. Doctors in Norway have been asked to conduct more thorough evaluations of very frail elderly patients in line to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, following the reported deaths, the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) reported late Friday. "It may be a coincidence, but we aren't sure," Steinar Madsen, medical director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA), told the BMJ. "There is no certain connection between these deaths and the vaccine." Two Covid-19 vaccines, Comirnaty, from BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna, are being used in Norway. The agency has investigated 13 of the deaths so far and concluded that common adverse reactions of mRNA vaccines, such as fever, nausea, and diarrhoea, may have contributed to fatal outcomes in some of the frail patients. "There is a possibility that these common adverse reactions, that are not dangerous in fitter, younger patients and are not unusual with vaccines, may aggravate underlying disease in the elderly," Madsen was quoted as saying. "We are now asking for doctors to continue with the vaccination, but to carry out extra evaluation of very sick people whose underlying condition might be aggravated by it." In a statement, <keyword id="44612" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> said: "Pfizer and <keyword id="3124139" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BioNTech">BioNTech</keyword> are aware of reported deaths following administration of BNT162b2. May 31, China on Monday announced plans to send three male astronauts to its space station next month for a three-month stay, a day after the successful docking of a <keyword id="4170273" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cargo-spacecraft">cargo spacecraft</keyword> with it, hoping to achieve yet another milestone in its ambitious space programme. The country launched cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-2 on Saturday, carrying supplies, equipment and propellant which had successfully docked with the space station core module Tianhe, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). Combined with Tianhe, Tianzhou-2 will replenish Tianhe's propellant, it said. China, which launched its space station core module Tianhe on April 29, now plans to complete the verification of key technologies and the in-orbit construction of the space station through multiple launches within two years, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Yang Liwei, director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office and the country's first <keyword id="34120" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="astronaut">astronaut</keyword>, said that the three astronauts are getting ready to travel by manned spacecraft Shenzhou-12 in June to dock with Tianhe and stay there for three months. Yang, who went into space in the Shenzhou-5 craft on October 15, 2003, told the state-run China Central Television (<keyword id="6354857" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CCTV">CCTV</keyword>) during the weekend that the three astronauts of the Shenzhou-12 mission will stay in space for three months, during which they will conduct tasks, including repair and maintenance, appliance switch and scientific tasks. The three astronauts, who will take the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft to the space station core cabin in June, are now under Level-2 quarantine, with all related work having entered a final sprint stage, according to a report by the state-run <keyword id="107898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword>. Although there will not be any female astronauts in the upcoming Shenzhou-12 crewed mission, they will basically participate in every following flight mission, Yang said. The three astronauts will take on command and engineering roles, he said. With the successful launch of the Tianzhou-2 cargo ship, China has completed its first two launch missions out of the total 11 of the intensive space station construction phase, scheduled from April 29, 2021 to 2022. Three will be for modules, four for cargo spaceships and four for manned spaceships, the report said. Four flight crews have been selected from the first and second batch of astronauts for the four Shenzhou missions. Astronauts will conduct multiple tasks outside the cabin, carrying out repair and maintenance on the spacecraft, and other construction missions, Yang said. "Astronauts coming out of the cabin will become a new routine, and the duration of such activities will be greatly expanded," he said. China's space station has also been equipped with the robotic arm over which the US has raised concerns for its possible military applications. The arm can be stretched to 15 meters long, which will also play a vital role in building the space station in orbit, Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China's manned space engineering project, said previously. Astronauts will team up with the robotic arm to make in-orbit space station construction and maintenance possible, Yang noted. China in the past has launched several scavenger satellites fitted with robotic arms to gather and steer space debris so it burns up in the Earth's atmosphere. James Dickinson, commander of the <keyword id="1782800" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Space-Command">US Space Command</keyword>, told a congressional hearing last month that the technology "could be used in a future system for grappling other satellites" and was therefore a concern to the US military, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. The Chinese space station was expected to be a competitor to the aging International Space Station (ISS) which is a modular space station in low Earth orbit. The 435.5-km Lhasa-Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has been inaugurated ahead of the centenary celebrations of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1. The first electrified railway in Tibet Autonomous Region opened Friday morning, linking Lhasa with Nyingchi as "Fuxing" bullet trains enter official operation on the plateau region, state-run <keyword id="106387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xinhua-news-agency">Xinhua news agency</keyword> reported. It has a designed speed of 160 km per hour and operates on a single-line electrified railway. It stops at nine stations, including Lhasa, Shannan and Nyingchi and can handle passenger and freight transportation, the report said. Compared to roads, the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway reduces the travel time from Lhasa to Nyingchi from 5 hours to approximately 3.5 hours, and cuts the travel time from Shannan to Nyingchi from 6 hours to approximately 2 hours, it said. The rail line passes through 47 tunnels and 121 bridges and crosses the Brahmaputra river locally called Yarlung Zangbo 16 times. Tunnels and bridges account for approximately 75 per cent of the total length of the railway track. Also, it has an annual freight transport capacity of 10 million tonnes which provides strong support for the flow of goods, will promote economic development and improve people's lives, the report said. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be the second railway into Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It will go through the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the world's most geologically active areas. In November, Chinese President <keyword id="191809" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xi-Jinping">Xi Jinping</keyword> had instructed officials to expedite construction of the new railway project, connecting Sichuan Province and Nyingchi in Tibet, saying the new rail line would play a key role in safeguarding the border stability. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway starts from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, and travels through Ya'an and enters Tibet via Qamdo, shortening the journey from Chengdu to Lhasa from 48 hours to 13 hours. Nyingchi is the prefecture-level city of Medog which is adjacent to the Arunachal Pradesh border. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet, which is firmly rejected by <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC). Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the official daily <keyword id="107898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword> earlier that "If a scenario of a crisis happens at the China-India border, the railway will provide a great convenience for China's delivery of strategic materials. Amid the ongoing border standoff, China has reminded India of its “fragile economy”. China's state-run <keyword id="107898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword> recently said in an editorial that the recent Goods and <keyword id="645517" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Services-Tax">Services Tax</keyword> and last year’s demonetisation have slowed down growth in India. "It comes as no surprise that Indian business activity contracted sharply after the implementation of a new <keyword id="4860333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-tax">national tax</keyword> in July. Questions are being raised about whether the country's reform program is too aggressive and how long the <keyword id="4860334" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-sluggishness">economic sluggishness</keyword> will last," it says. It says businesses are confused about the new taxation system. This comes after Nikkei India Services PMI Business Activity Index plunged from June's eight-month high of 53.1 to 45.9 in July, its lowest level since September 2013. However, it says the new tax is just an immediate cause of slowdown and there are long-term trends that persist. "While iron fist reform measures seem to have caused the slowdown in India's economic growth, the real reason may have been the country's economic fragility," it says. "Due to the large amount of bad loans in sectors such as power, infrastructure and steel, India's banking sector is reluctant to extend new loans these days. That situation directly led to the slump in investment growth by domestic companies, which hit a 25-year low in fiscal 2016-17. Whether the rate cut can help revive investment remains to be seen. Hopefully, it will inject sufficient momentum to help the Indian economy sustain its aggressive reform agenda," the editorial says.

Amid border standoff, China reminds India how weak its economy is

The <keyword id="192225" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chinese-foreign-ministry" source="Orion">Chinese Foreign Ministry</keyword> summoned the US ambassador to China, <keyword id="455015" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nicholas-burns" source="Orion">Nicholas Burns</keyword>, early Wednesday to protest Pelosi's visit as a "serious provocation and violation" of the one-China principle, state newspaper <keyword id="107898" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="global-times" source="Orion">Global Times</keyword> reported. China also sent 21 planes into Taiwan's air defence identification zone on Tuesday alone, the <keyword id="43909" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="defence-ministry" source="Orion">Defence Ministry</keyword> in Taipei said. Pelosi meets Taiwan's president, China starts military exercises

<ul class="summary-list"><li>During the financial crisis, two countries kept the global <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> from cratering even further than it did — China and India. </li><li>Unfortunately this time around — in the economic crisis caused by the corornavirus pandemic — no country is coming to save us.</li><li>India has been on lockdown for months, and China is still feeling the debt hangover from the credit binge it went on to skip the financial crisis.</li><li>This gives us all the more reason for Washington to pass another <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> aid bill as soon as possible.</li><li>This is an <keyword id="6356002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="opinion">opinion</keyword> column. The thoughts expressed are those of the author. </li></ul>The coronavirus depression will be much worse than the last worldwide <keyword id="6357558" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Recession">recession</keyword>, because this time no country is strong enough to rescue the global economy.The story of the Great Recession goes like this: the US and Europe were crippled while working to clean up their devastated banking system, the global services sector suffered without its biggest player — the US consumer engine — but global economic growth didn't completely fall off a cliff because other countries kept money moving around the planet.Over in China policymakers enacted a massive stimulus to skip over the recession entirely. The country's GDP grew 9.4% in 2009. India chugged along as if the crisis barely happened, with its GDP growing 7.9% in 2009.But this time there is no corner of the globe that has been left untouched by the pandemic or its effects. And so, there's no country that can reasonably chug along and keep things from getting truly disastrous.Economists over the Institute of International Finance (IIF) recently wrote in a recent note that it was the growth of these two countries that lifted the global economy while the US economy was on its knees. That is why global GDP only fell to -0.4% in in 2009. Conversely, without their help the economists estimate that global GDP to fall to -3.8% this year.<div type="image" title="Coronavirus will hand us a bigger slowdown than the financial crisis. Partly because India and China aren't growing this time.e" height="569" width="1294" msid="78090609" hostid="261"></div><h2>Holding out for a hero</h2>The high growth countries that kept the global economy from free fall aren't coming to save us this time. Nobody is.India is <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/coronavirus-india-lockdown-september-11-2020-live-updates/article32578190.ece">now on its 170th</a> day of lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Credit rating firm Moody's expects economic <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/moody-s-projects-11-5-contraction-in-india-s-economic-growth-in-fy21-11599822389400.html">growth to fall 11.5%</a> in 2020.And while the worst of China's lockdowns have passed (for now), it's expected GDP growth of around 3.2% for 2020 is a far cry from a decade ago. Plus, this time around China's policymakers are being much more <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-01/no-shock-and-little-awe-china-s-stimulus-underwhelms-traders">cautious with their stimulus</a> In some part this is because the government is concerned it may have to institute another lockdown. Policymakers are also being cautious because China is still dealing with a massive debt hangover from 2009. Skipping a recession doesn't come cheap. China spent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/09/business/economy/coronavirus-china-economy-stimulus.html">half a trillion dollars</a> avoiding the financial crisis, and in the years that followed it built up a massive, opaque shadow banking system that it has since been trying to tamp down since 2015. This year China's total debt – corporate, household, and government — climbed to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-economy-debt-idUSKCN1UD0KD">303% of GDP.</a> So while the government is pulling some levers it pulled to spur economic activity during the financial crisis — like encouraging infrastructure investment — China's central bank, The People's Bank of China, has said it sees <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/13/chinas-central-bank-sees-little-need-for-more-stimulus-this-year.html">no need</a> for additional emergency stimulus in 2020. With weak demand coming from China and India, Latin America will sell fewer commodities, and the whole of Asia will slow, the IIF notes. We cannot expect exceptional growth from there.Could the European Union could save us? The rapid response of Eurozone countries to the pandemic seemed to be a model for the rest of the world and a potential salve for the economic chaos. But now cases <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/record-breaking-coronavirus-cases-france-180312962.html">spiking in countries like Spain and France</a> and it's unlikely that the bloc will have the economic power to boost the rest of the world for the time being.In <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-world-economy-will-shrink-after-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-2020-4">April I wrote that</a> even when the coronavirus was brought under control we would live in a shrunken world — a world where human transactions would be limited. Since economic transactions are mostly human interactions, you can see the problem there. It was obvious that a slowdown was coming, how bad would depend on how we handled it.April was a simpler time, back then the assumption was that the US would bring its first wave to heel and that a second wave may rear its ugly head in the fall. Of course, our first wave never ended. We have handled the coronavirus badly. The US unemployment rate is sitting at 8.3%. Testing is splotchy. Washington was able to get its act together to blunt the full force of the coronavirus' onset, but now Democrats and Republicans are locked in an argument over whether or not the country needs another rescue package.It does. In fact, the whole world needs it.

No one is coming to save the global economy this time

<ul class="summary-list"><li>State-affiliated media company Global Times warned <keyword id="46274" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Taiwan">Taiwan</keyword> that the US may abandon it as it did <keyword id="6354541" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="afghanistan">Afghanistan</keyword>.</li><li>The newspaper called the chaos there an "omen" for the island. </li></ul><ul class="summary-list"><li>Taiwan's premier hit back Tuesday and said Taiwan would not collapse like Afghanistan if it were attacked.</li></ul>State-affiliated Chinese tabloid <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202108/1231636.shtml">Global Times</a> said Monday in a staff editorial that the chaos in Afghanistan should be a warning for what is in store for Taiwan should the US "abandon" it. "The situation in Afghanistan suddenly saw a radical change after the country was abandoned by the US. And Washington just left despite the worsening situation in Kabul. Is this some kind of omen of Taiwan's future fate?" wrote the commentary on Global Times.The newspaper said Taiwan is similar to Afghanistan in that it relies heavily on US protection. It warned that the US would not come to the island's aid should a military conflict happen, saying the island's defense "will collapse in hours.""From what happened in Afghanistan, they should perceive that once a war breaks out in the Straits, the island's defense will collapse in hours, and the US military won't come to help," it wrote.The US does not have troops stationed in Taiwan, nor does it have official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Instead, it maintains its relationship with the country via its American Institute in Taiwan, which acts as a de facto embassy. Most recently, in April, the Biden administration sent an unofficial delegation to Taiwan, with officials saying it sent "an important signal about the US commitment to Taiwan and its democracy," reported <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/13/politics/us-unofficial-delegation-taiwan/index.html">CNN</a>. The United States also sells arms to the region. Sales from the US to Taiwan exceeded $5 billion in 2020, per a<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-taiwan-security-usa-timeline-idUSKBN28I0BF"> Reuters report</a>. This month, the Biden administration proposed a $750-million arms sale to the island, reported <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/04/politics/biden-administration-taiwan-arms-sales/index.html">CNN</a>. Premier Su Tseng-chang on Tuesday hit back at concerns that Taiwan may end up being the next Afghanistan, saying the island will not collapse if attacked, reported <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/afghanistan-conflict-taiwan/taiwan-would-not-collapse-like-afghanistan-premier-says-idUSL4N2PO0VG">Reuters</a>. Su said what's unfolding in Afghanistan shows that external help will not make a big difference to a country that is chaotic from within. He also warned "foreign forces" looking to invade Taiwan not to be "deluded.""Today, there are powerful countries that want to swallow up Taiwan using force," he said, telling Reuters "we must guard this country and this land, and not be like certain people who always talk up the enemy's prestige and talk down our resolve."
