<ul class="summary-list"><li>European stocks are pricing in a Trump win, Barclays said.</li><li>Exporters have underperformed the broader European market by 15% since spring.</li></ul>With the US election less than two weeks away, European stocks have already been pricing in a Donald Trump victory, according to Barclays.The firm noted that a basket of European exporters — or those companies most vulnerable to tariffs — has underperformed the benchmark European Stoxx 600 by 15% since early spring.Barclays says this is reflective of investors preemptively bracing for Trump's tariff policy, which has been a cornerstone of his presidential-election platform, under the expectation he will win.<div type="image" title="Barclays chart showing how stocks exposed to tariffs have underperformed the broader index" height="1670" width="2136" msid="114514786" hostid="261" sizebytes="87238"></div>"Tariff concerns have been a drag on EU equities' relative performance year-to-date," Barclays analysts led by Emmanuel Cau wrote on Wednesday. "In the event of a full-blown trade war, we could see up to a high single-digit drag on EPS growth with Germany, Italy, Cap Goods, Autos, Beverages, Tech, Chemicals most at risk."Barclays did note that some European firms have relocated production to the US since 2018, which could somewhat limit the impact of Trump's trade policy on the whole market. But it's still worried about the possible side effects."The second-order impact through lower growth and higher inflation (i.e. stagflation) could be more severe, in particular in the case of retaliation and a trade war," Barclays wrote.The US will also feel the impact. The firm forecasts Trump tariffs will be a 3.2% drag on S&amp;P 500 earnings-per-share next year, with the most negative impact affecting materials, discretionary, industrials, technology, and healthcare. Beyond that, retaliatory measures would generate an additional 1.5% hit to forward EPS.The note suggested a possible rebound for Europe's markets if Kamala Harris wins. Her policy would also boost clean and renewables in the region, which have also underperformed on the chances of a Trump win.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Luckin Coffee, which has put up a strong fight against Starbucks in Asia, is looking to the US.</li><li>The Chinese coffee brand, known for its heavy discounts, reported a strong third quarter.</li></ul>Luckin Coffee is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luckin-coffee-chinese-chain-making-starbucks-nervous-singapore-2023-11">putting up a strong fight against Starbucks</a> in Asia. Now, it's planning to bring that rivalry into the US.Here's the state of play: Starbucks is trying to pull itself out of a rut. In its quarter ending September 29, Starbucks reported a 7% decline in sales worldwide. In China, the company's sales slid by 14% compared to the same period last year, to $783.7 million.In August, it appointed Brian Niccol as its new CEO. Niccol has said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-ceo-to-lay-out-strategy-to-fix-coffee-chain-2024-10">his plan</a> to turn around the coffee chain involves faster orders, adding a human touch to the ordering process, and positioning the brand's outlets as "third spaces."Luckin reported a strong third quarter. Its sales rose 41.4% year over year, and its quarterly revenue was $1.452 billion. The chain is known for its aggressive deals, unusual flavors like a Big Cheese coffee drink, and mobile ordering.Both brands are well established in Singapore, with multiple outlets in the city-state's Central Business District. On a recent weekday around lunchtime, I stopped by both a Luckin and a Starbucks to see how they compare in price, menu options, and vibe.<h2 id="efd5eecf-2a86-4a4e-b481-4b74f8bf8a7d">Luckin versus Starbucks</h2>I started at Luckin Coffee.When I walked in, I found people waiting around the collection counter for their drinks. Others were sitting around at tables drinking coffee.But most customers seemed to be in a rush, ready to grab their drinks and go.To order any menu item at Luckin, customers have to download the brand's app and place their order digitally. Staff members at the counter don't take orders.The app was easy to use, though it hit me with numerous pop-ups for discount vouchers. Because I was a new user, every drink on the menu was half off for me.<div type="image" title="A Luckin Coffee outlet in Singapore's Central Business District." height="3024" width="4032" msid="115040697" hostid="261" sizebytes="788852"></div>The most expensive drink on the menu was an Iced Oat Shakerato listed for 8 Singapore dollars, or $6. With the discount, it cost me SG$4.There were at least five orders waiting for collection before me. Still, my drink was ready in under five minutes, ready to be collected as soon as I scanned the QR code on my app. I didn't have to speak to a single person throughout the process.<div type="image" title="Luckin's ordering process was entirely digital, requiring no communication with the staff." height="768" width="1024" msid="115040695" hostid="261" sizebytes="75736"></div>After that, I walked about 100 feet to the nearest Starbucks, which had a large seating area. It turned out to be one of their seasonal holiday drinks.I chose the Salted Pretzel Cocoa Oatmilk Latte, which came out to SG$10.20.Unlike Luckin, there was no one in line. I was out with my coffee, a venti-sized drink topped with crushed pretzels, in under three minutes, slightly faster than at Luckin.Overall, Starbucks' most expensive drink was more expensive than Luckin's. Luckin had more customers, so the wait time was slightly longer than in Starbucks.<h2 id="e3e55b2a-ebe2-4754-a009-07c30921fd35">The battle for coffee domination</h2>Luckin Coffee was founded in Beijing in October 2017. It filed for bankruptcy in the US in 2021 after the fallout of an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luckin-coffee-fabricated-310-million-in-sales-investigation-2020-4">accounting fraud scandal</a>, in which it was revealed that it had faked nearly half of its roughly $732 million sales from 2019.Today, it has 21,343 stores globally.Luckin launched its first international stores in Singapore in March 2023, and the city-state now has more than 40 outlets. Now, it's eyeing the US market for expansion opportunities."We are also actively evaluating opportunities in the United States and other markets," Luckin wrote in its Q3 earnings report.Representatives for Luckin Coffee didn't respond to a request for comment from BI for this story.Starbucks has 40,199 outlets globally — nearly twice as many as Luckin does. Of that count, 7,596 stores are in China, an increase from the 6,806 it had a year ago.When asked for comment, a Starbucks representative in China directed BI to the remarks made by Niccol and the brand's finance chief, Rachel Ruggeri, in its Q4 earnings call.In the call, Ruggeri said sales in China were "weighed down by intensified competition and a soft macro environment that impacted consumer spending."Luckin isn't Starbucks' only rising competition in the US. It's also contending with the likes of Dutch Bros. and 7 Brew."There are concerns about speed of service and operational complexity, and new menu innovation has been lacking," R.J. Hottovy, the head of analytical research at Placer.ai, told BI about Starbucks."Starbucks' decline in visits also comes at a time when other coffee and beverage chains are seeing year-over-year visit increases, reinforcing that new product innovations aren't connecting with consumers," he added.<h2 id="998c3bea-c071-471c-a5fb-74f3f2be2403">Analysts say Starbucks should be worried about Luckin Coffee</h2>Luckin's pricing and focus on technology gives it an edge over Starbucks, consumer analysts say.David Yu, a finance professor from NYU, told BI Luckin is "all about technology." By comparison, he said Starbucks' use of technology, such as ordering on its app, is "pretty weak."Yaling Jiang, a China consumer research expert behind the newsletter "Following the Yuan," published an article on Monday about Starbucks' performance in China. In it, Jiang said Starbucks has continually failed to "meet Chinese consumers' changing perception about product price."Nirgunan Tiruchelvam, a consumer and equity analyst at Aletheia Capital in Singapore, told BI that he thinks Luckin "has an edge over Starbucks at the moment" because of its novelty.However, he said Luckin may still be in an uphill battle in the US."Luckin Coffee's plans in the US may not go as smoothly as one would expect because the US is a very complex market, where Starbucks is much better entrenched than in Asia," said Tiruchelvam.He said it's also cheaper to set up outlets in Asian markets than in the US."The expansion costs, in terms of the cost of rolling out an outlet versus the payback from it, are actually far more challenging in the US than in Asia," Tiruchelvam added.Yu echoed those sentiments, saying aggressive discounting is not a sustainable approach for Luckin."I always say discounting is never a great long-term strategy. It could be used effectively for short-term purposes," he said.However, Starbucks' increasingly expensive price tag has created an "opening" for Luckin, Yu said."So I think that's good timing for Luckin's perspective if they're willing to go and discount and price aggressively under to gain customers," Yu added.

The company's <keyword id="22862818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brand-strength" source="keywords">brand strength</keyword> was evaluated with a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 91.0 out of 100, earning it the prestigious AAA+ rating. Amul's performance in familiarity, consideration, and recommendation metrics solidified its position as a global leader in the food and dairy sectors. While Amul shines in brand strength, the report identifies Nestle and Lay's as leaders in brand value. Nestle retained its title as the world's most valuable food brand, despite a 7 per cent decline in brand value to USD 20.8 billion. The company's ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences and maintain a diverse product portfolio has been key to its enduring success. Lay's, on the other hand, saw a 9 per cent increase in brand value, rising to USD 12 billion and securing the second spot globally. Lay's innovative product offerings, including its Flavour Swap and MAX lineups, have driven its brand value growth. The Brand Finance report also notes a 4 per cent decline in the overall brand value of the food and beverage sector, now totalling around USD 268 billion. This decline is attributed to consumers increasingly favoring smaller, private-label brands offering unique, personalized products over traditional big names. Convenience foods, however, are bucking the trend, with rising brand value due to growing demand from busy consumers. Brands like Healthy Choice and DiGiorno have seen a 17 per cent increase in brand value, driven by innovative product releases and strategic marketing. Amul's ascension as the world's strongest food and dairy brand is a testament to its consistent innovation, effective marketing strategies, and strong consumer trust. The cooperative's commitment to quality and its extensive product range has made it a household name not just in India but across the globe. Nestle leads the food sector with the highest Sustainability Perceptions Value at USD 1.4 billion, while Coca-Cola tops the non-alcoholic drinks sector with a value of USD 5.2 billion. The report suggests that brands like Lay's and Pepsi, with high positive gap values, could further enhance their market positions by better communicating their sustainability efforts. Amul emerges as world's strongest food and dairy brand, topping global rankings in Brand Finance Food & Drink 2024 Report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Boba is shifting from a novelty fad to mainstream, with shops popping up across the world.</li><li>The trend began in Taiwan in the 1980s where teahouse Chun Shui Tang was a pioneer of the beverage.</li></ul>Once a novelty beverage, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-bubble-tea-compared-tiger-sugar-gong-cha-2019-10">boba or bubble tea</a> has moved into the mainstream.It's an unexpected turn for Chui Shui Tang, the teahouse in Taiwan that says it pioneered the beverage in the 1980s.Chun Shui Tang started as a traditional teahouse selling tea leaves — a dime a dozen in Taiwan. But, as Liu Han-Chieh, the teahouse's founder, found out, selling tea was harder than loving tea.Speaking to Business Insider at his company's headquarters in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung, Liu was candid about how the move benefited his business."In Taiwan, we need to sell tea leaves with a human touch — customers need to try some tea before buying tea leaves, so some would just be chatting for long hours with you over tea but not buy eventually," said Liu, 72.Furthermore, traditional Chinese tea drinking involves <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/chinese-tea-ceremonies-traditions">multiple steps,</a> which can make the sale pitch long-drawn. And when customers finally do commit to buying a bag of tea leaves, they could brew it for weeks.It's just not the best way to make money.<h2 id="d8e66081-8795-4dbd-99de-af763250d638">From chilled tea to boba milk tea</h2>Inspired by iced coffee on a trip to Japan in the early 80s, Liu went home with the idea for a hand-shaken iced tea — a bold move for the teahouse at the time, as cold tea was generally only served at street food stands, he said.Soon, Lin Hsiu-hui, a young staffer who was managing sales of chilled tea at the teahouse, was outselling his traditional hot offerings."With iced tea, you can sell to anyone from three years old to 80 years old. With hot tea, you can only sell to old people," said Liu.<div type="image" title="The first Chun Shui Tang Teahouse in Taichung, Taiwan." height="3024" width="4032" msid="112363595" hostid="261" sizebytes="1727172"></div>It also helped that the younger customer base would buy one cup of ready-made chilled tea a day instead of one bag of tea leaves a month.Liu knew he had stumbled upon a winner.Liu instructed Lin, who is now the R&amp;D director at Chun Shui Tang, to experiment with adding new ingredients to tea.Lin said she simply added her favorite childhood Taiwanese dessert treat — chewy tapioca balls — to milk tea. Liu coined the term "pearls" for the topping because they reminded him of black pearls.Liu likened the evolution of his tea offerings to coffee giant Starbucks, which was founded in 1971 and started out selling coffee beans. Now, Starbucks sells everything from beverages to meals, coffee mugs, and merchandise.Liu's daughter, Angela — who is now Chun Shui Tang's managing director — acknowledged she would like the Taiwanese tea chain to be like Starbucks is to coffee.But it has a long way to go: The tea company has over 200 outlets globally, compared to Starbucks' count of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://s203.q4cdn.com/326826266/files/doc_financials/2024/q2/2Q24-Earnings-Release-Final-4-30-24.pdf">more than 38,000.</a>And Liu, the teahouse's founder, doesn't appear to be in a rush to expand. He said he's keen on taking a longer-term approach to growing Chun Shui Tang. He's also not looking for external funding."It's a business that can be sustained for a long time. Tea has been around for the last 5,000 years, so it's a long-term game," he said.<h2 id="a7a83563-5292-46ba-9297-58ac703633fc">A controversial start becomes a global phenomenon</h2>Chun Shui Tang's claim about being the founder of boba tea isn't without controversy.A teahouse called Hanlin Tea Room in the southern city of Tainan also claims to have invented the beverage around the same time after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183016/post/202206300005/">Tu Tsung-ho, its late founder,</a> spotted white tapioca balls at a market. Hanlin Tea Room did not respond to a request for comment from BI.The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2018/11/13/2003704115">two companies were embroiled</a> in a bitter lawsuit spanning 10 years. The court eventually did not rule in either company's favor, as neither filed a patent or trademark protection.Meanwhile, pearl milk tea and its many iterations were popping up in and outside of Taiwan all the while. Today, the industry is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/bubble-tea-market">estimated to be worth billions</a> globally.Now a global cultural phenomenon and a symbol of Taiwanese identity, the proliferation of boba tea underscores the island's soft power in an era when news constantly revolves around military threats from China, which claims Taiwan as its territory.Today, boba tea can be easily found in the US — a far cry from when Liu's daughter, Angela, was studying at Purdue University in the US some 15 years ago.<div type="image" title="Chun Shui Tang founder Liu Han-chieh and managing director Angela Liu with a bubble red tea and boba milk tea at their teahouse in Taichung, Taiwan." height="2963" width="3950" msid="112363594" hostid="261" sizebytes="1284266"></div>At the time, Liu had to get her tea leaves and pearls shipped to her. Now, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://portal.sw.nat.gov.tw/PPL/index">Taiwanese government data</a> show exports of tapioca and substitutes — which includes tapioca balls — to the US by tonnage more than doubled in the five years to 2023.In a sign that nearly every drink can now be boba-fied, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-boba-inspired-refresher-drinks-pearls-summer-berry-photos-review-2024-6">Starbucks</a> has a take on boba too, with raspberry pearls and a summer berries mixture. None of Starbucks' boba beverages contain tea.Chun Shui Tang's executives appear unperturbed by the many shapes and forms boba tea takes these days — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heinz-ketchup-boba-bubble-tea-store-singapore-2022-10">Heinz ketchup</a> boba tea, anyone? — because they've already been there and done that.In 2008, Chun Shui Tang introduced a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.chunshuitang.com.tw/article-detail/creative_bubble_tea_food/">boba tea hot pot</a> with a savory <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.chunshuitang.com.tw/en/bubble-milk-tea/">tea-infused broth.</a> They've also experimented with a boba tea-infused cheese tart and with recipes that incorporate herbs.While such out-of-this-world creations are good for buzz, customers still generally prefer beverages that do not "defy common sense," said Liu.<h2 id="97f9acaa-db96-48a2-800c-b6d665e0c9ef">Father of the teahouse founder refused to speak with him for 3 years</h2>Liu comes from a family of physicians.His father, a medical doctor, cut a stern figure — except when he was drinking tea."I was five when I saw that my father was smiling only when drinking tea, so I thought, 'Tea can really make someone happy,'" said Liu.Liu wasn't cut out for medical school, and after a few years in a corporate job, he started his tea business at the age of 30. His father was supportive and gifted him a teapot, thinking he would do a "proper job" running the business.Upon learning that his son introduced a chilled tea beverage and was adding new-fangled toppings to a traditional beverage, the physician hit the roof."He thought I was fooling around," said Liu.Liu's father refused to speak to him for three years — until Liu finally showed up at the elder man's door with convincing sales figures and a shiny new car.He still keeps the teapot his father gifted close to him in the office to remind him of his first supporter.<div type="image" title="Liu Han-chieh, founder of Chun Shui Tang with a small teapot." height="3024" width="4032" msid="112363599" hostid="261" sizebytes="1180518"></div><h2 id="0ebf6d83-3d03-4f43-b678-31462246ca91">Chun Shui Tang OG shop in Taichung is a tourist hotspot</h2>Today, Liu's OG Chun Shui Tang teahouse in Taichung is on many tourists' checklists.There wasn't much activity around the area in late June when BI visited the shop. It's located on an unassuming street with an apparel shop, a law firm, and a tutoring center.But Chun Shui Tang had a steady stream of travelers heading to its shop fronted by a striking blue tiled roof.Unlike most boba tea shops today, where customers take out their beverages, Chun Shui Tang still retains its original genteel teahouse element where customers could dine in — and most do.There's also much more than boba tea on its menu. Customers can order food including noodles, various side dishes, and breakfast toast. They also still serve traditional Chinese tea.Mark Anthony Villones, a tourist from the Philippines, was at the store when BI visited. He told BI he did not quite expect to see a sit-in dining concept where customers could order more than snacks.Just like other travelers BI spoke to, Villones said he was simply there "to try the original bubble tea" with a group of friends during a holiday to Taiwan.<div type="image" title="A group of young Filipino tourists at Chun Shui Tang in Taichung Taiwan posing with their boba." height="1200" width="1600" msid="112363591" hostid="261" sizebytes="203622"></div>His friend, Kayne Sy, said she found the teahouse and boba tea — served in a tall cocktail glass — "really nice," but wasn't blown over.Her comments sum up one of Chun Shui Tang's biggest challenges: a very crowded marketplace.<h2 id="973176f2-0203-4f29-ab30-f215f6503f92">The competition is tough amid fierce competition from China</h2>Chun Shui Tang will be up for a tough fight in the global boba tea market.While Chun Shui Tang is a familiar name in Taiwan, it — alongside its younger brand, TP Tea — is not the most recognizable brand globally."Nowadays, there are more and more chain bubble tea operations in China that have ambitions to go overseas to expand their global footprint," Jason Yu, the Greater China managing director at Kantar Worldpanel, a consumer research group, told BI.Some of the mainland chains — such as Central China-based Mixue — are also backed by venture capital money, making the competition especially stiff — since the operating model is easily replicated and scalable, he added.<div type="image" title="The sign of Mixue Bingcheng is seen at its shop in Shanghai, China." height="3667" width="5500" msid="112363601" hostid="261" sizebytes="852972"></div>"Taiwan's bubble tea shops are doing well in Taiwan, but they are probably not expanding as fast as their Chinese counterparts," said Yu.As for Taiwanese firms' clout as the first to invent the product, Yu said he isn't sure that's enough to make them frontrunners in the global race."It helps with storytelling, but it's not enough," said Yu. "Being the original can give you a few marks, but it's never the whole thing. It's really about the brand, it's about the product, it's about the supply chain."After all, modern coffee culture was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/italy-invented-coffee-culture-now-its-a-coffee-time-capsule/2019/01/02/aae47a0a-0209-11e9-958c-0a601226ff6b_story.html">popularized by the Italians</a> — but it's Starbucks from the US that has become a massive global phenomenon, Yu said.Chun Shui Tang founder Liu said he isn't worried about the competition, because the market is big enough for everyone.After all, his tea business has only gotten better, not worse with more competitors — because it's through them that they learn about boba tea and his pioneer Taiwanese brand, he said."They are our helpers, not our rivals," said Liu.

Consolidated total income for the quarter witnessed a 19.13 per cent growth during the October-December period at ₹754.76 crore as compared to ₹633.52 crore in the corresponding period the previous year, driven by higher realisations in Eight O'Clock Coffee (EOC) and instant coffee businesses of the company. The operating performance of EOC business was impacted during the quarter under review by higher input and other costs, which are expected to ease over coming quarters, it said. Tata Coffee's Vietnam operations continue to deliver robust sales with improved profitability driven by higher sales of premium products, it said. The brand is owned by Honest, a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola Company. The organic green tea for the product will be sourced from Kolkata-based Luxmi Tea Co Private Ltd's Makaibari Tea Estate, company officials said. An MoU in this regard was signed between the two companies at the seventh edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) here. The idea behind the launch was to provide consumers with wider beverage options, a senior official of Coca-Cola India &amp; Southwest Asia said. The iced green tea will come in Lemon-Tulsi and Mango variants, he added.

"This is the first quarter where we have crossed the billion dollar annualised revenue mark (at $1.05 billion)," said Zomato. Blinkit's Gross Order Value (GOV) grew 26 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 14.82 billion while the revenue grew 44 per cent quarter-on-quarter. "Adjusted EBITDA loss in quick commerce reduced to Rs 2.59 billion from Rs 3.26 billion in the previous quarter (Q1FY23)," the company said. However, thankfully because of the chai and coffee lovers, the company – which is the world’s second largest manufacturer and distributor of tea – saw no impact of economic slowdown on sales. “Our flagship brands in India recorded good growth and we will continue to focus on white space opportunities in the Indian market,” said Ajoy Misra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Global Beverages. According to the company, the India tea business clocked a growth of 8% in volume and value terms. Meanwhile, Tata Starbucks’ sales grew 26% for the quarter. Its international sales are growing too. The total revenue from Tata Coffee and <keyword id="13486" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vietnam">Vietnam</keyword> unit saw an 18% growth along with a volume growth from tea and coffee in the UK, US and Canada. “Our international markets reflected volume growth in both tea and coffee. We will continue to strengthen our innovation agenda while further strengthening our core brands. Our JVs continue to perform well and have posted good revenue growth in the quarter,” said Misra.
