The patron of many arts passed away due to multiple organ failure, according to his family.  Tughlaq of Arts His famous play called ‘Tughlaq’ which portrayed the much-ridiculed Sultan of India, as an idealist who is disillusioned later. His plays and works bring in nativity, giving a new direction to Indian writings which were heavily influenced by Western ideals. The maverick made his acting and screenwriting debut in a Kannada movie, Samskara, which won first President’s Golden Lotus award. He became a director, a move which earned him maximum fame. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974, Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Jnanpith award in 1998. Fearless in the arts Girish Karnad was born in 1938, in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Karnataka Arts College, Dharwad, he went to England and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen, in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He was also the president of the Oxford Union in 1963. Karnad’s works, like him, were fearless in political opinions often stirred debate. Despite death threats, he never wavered from voicing his bold views. “We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire,” said Karnad as he lent voice to former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s famous book, ‘Wings of Fire’. The Prime Minister is one of the many who expressed sorrow at his demise. He tweeted, “Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately about causes dear to him. His works will continue to become popular in the years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace.”

The fearless voice of A P J Kalam, and veteran playwright Girish Karnad dies at 81

<ul><li><keyword id="2167965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="girish-mathrubootham" source="Orion">Girish Mathrubootham</keyword> is the co-founder and CEO of <keyword id="4621694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="freshworks" source="Orion">Freshworks</keyword>, which is worth nearly $13 billion.</li><li>“The point is you don't have to fight at that point of time, you don't have to react or respond, but to use it to fire to do something creative,” he says. </li><li>The 46-year old Mathrubootham shared stories from his life’s journey, from his parents’ divorce to scornful relatives, and how he dealt with the down moments in his life, in an interview with Business Insider.</li></ul>“I have had relatives who have told me that I am only good enough to be a rickshaw puller,” says Girish Mathrubootham, the man who went on to build Freshworks, one of the biggest software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies in India. With a valuation of $13 billion, Freshworks has become the first decacorn (a startup valued at over $10 billion) in this space and the first Indian SaaS company to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/enterprise/news/freshworks-ipo-the-success-story-of-indias-first-saas-company-to-be-listed-in-us-stock-exchange/articleshow/86453444.cms"> list on Nasdaq</a>. In a candid conversation with Business Insider, the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) opened up about his early life and the challenges he overcame. From earning $85,000 a year in 2001, he was back in India at a job that only paid him ₹40,000 a month in 2005-06. His father, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/thelife/news/meet-girish-mathrubootham-founder-and-ceo-of-freshworks/articleshow/86453777.cms#:~:text=Girish%20Mathrubootham%20is%20the%20star,so%20that%20his%20employees%20could.">a retired bank officer today</a>, was concerned because in his eyes all of Girish’s friends were successful with well paying jobs and had bought their own house. Girish, on the other hand, only had the in-hand salary and a two-bedroom apartment on a loan. “People’s definition of success is different. I was looking at being happy. So I was going after what made me happy, not chasing money. I was enjoying my career, building products and having fun, my friends knew that but I think that was okay,” he adds. ‘Differentiating the well wishers and well informed’ Mathrubootham doesn’t take advice from everyone. “If you are Sachin Tendulkar, who do you take advice from — Gary Kirsten or the other man who is there in every Tendulkar match with the Indian flag painted on his body,” he says. "I would just say that experience also made me who I am and so in a very simple sense that I had to kind of fend for myself, take my own decisions and be accountable for those decisions," he says, adding he doesn’t like taking decisions on other peoples’ part including that of his own children. If you take all the decisions for your children until they’re 25, how do you expect them to go out into the world, he adds. “Decision making also needs experience,” he believes. First, he transforms himself, and then he expects this from others as well. And while he is great at delegation, he expects every member of his team to report to him directly on the progress of the work he has been assigned. He lends a hand, if the job has hit an unexpected obstacle and helps to decide quickly on the go/no-go options. Even today, he works for nearly eleven to twelve hours a day at his office. In earlier years too, nobody ever thought of him as a contented child, or at peace with the world. For him, life offered, at each stage, one more opportunity to push forward, one more chance to dream the impossible dream. As the previous chapter stated, the favourite word to describe him was toofani. Gautambhai moved to Ahmedabad with his parents in the early 1970s, and his academic competence won him an admission at Sheth C.N. Vidyalaya, in 1974, a highly reputed school in Ahmedabad. He appeared for his secondary school exams (SSC) in 1977; his performance won him admission in the coveted science stream in Standard XI at the school. After heeding his uncle’s advice, the teenager decided to move to Bombay (now <keyword id="6358070" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mumbai" source="Orion">Mumbai</keyword>) to pursue his dreams. He stayed with his elder brother Vinodbhai, a wholesaler of cut-piece fabrics for Bipin Mills and Rajesh Mills, and decided to try his hand at trading in diamonds. Gautambhai would have preferred to embrace the earn-andyou-learn model for growth and development. But the fates had other plans for him. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Diamonds beckon" comment="subhead" text="Diamonds beckon">Diamonds beckon</cmsannotation> Gautam studied for a couple of months at a South Mumbai college. The diamond trading office was very close to the college. He went to the diamond markets in the morning, learned diamond sorting and assessment at Mahendra Brothers and then went to college. But in his attempt to excel at business, he found it difficult to mark attendance at college. Realizing that he could not meet attendance norms as well as do business the way he wanted to, he decided, within six months of life as a college student, to become a full-time diamond trader in Dhanji Street. Devendra R. Amin, who has now retired from the <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword>, and who was senior VP, corporate communications, says, ‘Gautambhai is not constrained by a “formal” education. Formal education teaches you what has been done and how it has been done in the past in a variety of disciplines ranging from science to business. Gautambhai was lucky that he did not go through such an education, which normally produces consultants and not entrepreneurs, or say, “worker bees” and not the “queen bee”. What is needed for growth and progress is the queen bee. A lack of formal education allows him to think out of the box and make swift decisions.’ Vinod Adani recalls how within a month of joining college, Gautambhai had begun to feel burdened by the pressures of attending college and coping with the demands of the diamond trade. He would be so tired that he would often go to sleep in the suburban train, overshooting the station he was supposed to get off at. Everything conspired to the eventual decision to give up studying. He began to solely focus on diamond trading instead. He entered into a partnership with his maternal cousins, Girish and Prakash, to trade in diamonds. In many ways, diamond trading honed Gautam’s instincts in finance. Diamonds, being very precious stones, are traded on wafer-thin margins—just a few basis points. Just to give an idea on how the diamond trading works: trades must be concluded quickly, because diamonds are purchased in one country and in one currency, sorted and traded in another country, then (usually) cut and processed in India. The process pipeline is usually three to six months. They are then sold to a fourth country. The longer the time, the greater are the exchange risk variables, and the interest burden on the inventory. One has, therefore, to meet other diamond traders in quick succession, show them samples of the stones you have, make a quote, and quickly strike a deal. Most commitments are oral in nature, and trades are settled in cash within a couple of days at best. Deals, at the smallest broker’s level, were worth a few thousand rupees in those days (in today’s values the trades would be upwards of Rs 1 lakh), or a few tens of thousands at most. Even in those days, Girish talks about Gautambhai’s overarching desire to strike big deals. He recalls how one day, Gautambhai had gone out with some diamonds, had sold them to a trader without informing his office, and then left for a couple of days’ holiday. When Girish returned to his office, he found the inventory short by diamonds worth Rs 1.5 lakh, a princely sum in those days. But there was nothing to show that a corresponding amount of money had been deposited in the bank. He waited for Gautambhai’s return. A few days later, Gautambhai returned to Mumbai and breezily informed his cousins that he had struck a deal with another trader for this huge amount and had happily gone back home to his native place, confident that a spoken deal was enough to ensure that he would get his money back. Unfortunately, the trader could not pay back in time, and failed to turn up at the diamond market. Nor would he take telephone calls. Promptly, Gautam and Girish worked out a plan. They decided to go to the trader’s house at 6 a.m. when the milk delivery boy rang the doorbell. The wife was surprised to see two young boys there. They then explained their purpose, and finally met the trader. The trader said that he had fallen on bad days and, after a bit of negotiation, finally settled his part of the trade with an offer of another set of precious stones. There wasn’t much profit that Gautam and Girish made in this transaction, but the deal got squared off. That was perhaps Gautam’s first brush with the unexpected factors in trading. 10 Things in Tech: How to make money on social media, Apple’s AI tax, and ChatGPT helps employees code faster

In a small town called <keyword id="2648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand">Anand</keyword> in western India in 1946 farmers were having a difficult time having to deal with the exploitative trade practices followed by the local trade cartel. Refusing to be cowed down by the cartel, farmers of this area went on a milk strike. And they approached the great Indian patriot Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a solution. His advice was natural, start a cooperative movement. 
 
And they did. 
 
Inspired by India’s freedom struggle, it all began when farmers in a small town near Anand city in Gujarat made milk as a symbol of protest. Tribhuvandas Patel was a local leader who had been imprisoned number of times during India’s struggle for freedom. With the help of his supporters, he found a dairy co-operative in 1946 in Anand. The cooperative movement was a movement against the atrocities of Polson Dairy, a locally-owned dairy in Anand, which procured milk from farmers at very low rates to sell to the Bombay (now Mumbai) government. 
 28 year old Mechanical Engineer from Kerala, <keyword id="168701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Verghese-Kurien">Verghese Kurien</keyword> arrived in Anand in 1949 as a government employee to manage a dairy. Fed up with his monotonous and unchallenging job he had already made up his mind to leave but upon Tribhuvandas Patel’s request he agreed to stay back for few months to oversee installation of the newly ordered machineries. No one then knew that Dr. Kurien would never leave Anand and make it the milk capital of India. In 1955 <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword> (then short for Anand Milk Union Ltd) was born. Verghese Kurien was in almost every way the architect of Amul. He went from helping farmers repair their machinery to revolutionising the Indian dairy industry by scripting Operation Flood, a cooperative movement that turned India from a net importer of milk into one of the world’s largest producers. Not for nothing was Dr. Verghese Kurien called the Milkman of India. 
 
The first dairy, Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, which created Amul in 1955, handed over the brand name to Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973. Thus, in 1973 the GCMMF was established to market milk and milk products manufactured by six district cooperative unions of Gujarat. 
 
 
 Branding played a major role for Amul’s success, the (original) Amul Girl was created by <keyword id="245066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sylvester-daCunha">Sylvester daCunha</keyword> (daCunha Communications) to counter the Polson dairy girl. Polson’s sexy village belle didn’t stand a chance to the tubby little moppet in the polka-dotted dress and a matching ribbon. Amul ads were cleverly designed to add a tinge of nationalism to an essentially rural revolution. The first Amul Ad campaign came in 1967 in Bombay (now Mumbai). And the response was phenomenal... and continues to be. Amul is also credited with a Guinness world record for longest running ad campaign of the world for its Utterly Butterly girl portraying day-to-day issues since 1967. In 1977, the Amul story was showcased through a Hindi movie titled Manthan directed by Shyam Benegal starring Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri which also won National award for best film. The movie again demonstrated the power of collective might as the movie was financed by a contribution of Rs. 2 by 5 lakh farmers. 
 
And then, Amul became a brandname in its own right. It is said that for Operation Flood, Kurien’s idea of having farmers own the brand went a long way in creating a sense of ownership and, in turn, responsibility for the product’s quality. Since the mid-90s, Amul has been able to take the range outside the security of traditional products, milk powder and butter. Amul diversified to everything from ice-cream, curd to long-life flavoured milk. Brand Amul is now present in over 50 countries. 
 
 
 
Amul has come a long way since its inception. The contribution of Amul in development of rural India as well as economic growth of the nation is legendary.

Today is World’s Population Day and everyone around the world is pouring their wisdom and intellect in how we can control population and what are the reasons behind the surge. 
 This <keyword id="203146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Population-Day">World Population Day</keyword>’s theme is-‘Investing in Teenage Girls’, which is subject of grave concern. 
 
World over, teenage girls face a number of challenges such as early marriage and motherhood. Many teenage girls are forced to drop out of schools and are marginalised. 
 
To bring these challenges to zilch, UNFPA has been running a series of programmes that aim to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives. 
 
In 2015 alone, UNFPA programmes helped 11.2 million girls between ages 10 and 19 gain access to sexual and reproductive health services and information.
