It has been edited for length and clarity.When my now-husband, Evans, first reached out to me via a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/older-women-dating-apps-experiences-tinder-bumble-2019-2">dating app</a> for "silver" singles, I rolled my eyes. He sent a smile emoji. I thought, "Here we go again."It was once bitten, twice shy. The last couple of people who sent smile emojis had been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/dating-app-scams-how-to-avoid-fraud-identity-theft-2022-3">scammers</a>. They'd chat for a while, say that they wanted to go on a private line, and, after a week or two, hit me up for money."I'll do this one more time," I thought. "If it's another scammer, I'm just going to delete the whole thing."So I smiled back at Evans. Then we started messaging through the app. We arranged to have lunch in my town, a 90-minute drive from his home in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-philadelphia-pennsylvania-2021-8">Pennsylvania</a>.I already felt very comfortable with Evans with messaging, but I guess I was still wary. I'd once accepted a lunch date from a scammer who canceled at the last minute."I can't make it because I've got to fly to Minneapolis for a business meeting," he'd said. Then he said that something had happened to his business and that he needed $3,000 to get it "back on track."<h2>Evans was the real deal and brought me 3 roses</h2>Evans was the real deal. He showed up at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/trying-applebees-first-time-review-photos-2023-2">Applebee's</a> with three roses. It was so cute. We talked and talked during our lunch. We talked about every aspect of our lives, including our families. Between us, we had six children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.We also talked about what happened to our spouses. Evans's wife died in 2013 after 40 years of marriage. But I didn't say that. I didn't want to be embarrassed. But we'd clicked.We continued texting and chatting on the phone. We would watch TV together on the same channel over the phone. We liked watching forensic-detective shows and football games. Love blossomed. I couldn't believe how lucky we were to have found each other.It was a far cry from where I'd been before. My husband had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ikaria-greece-blue-zone-terminal-cancer-diagnosis-live-longer-2023-8">lung cancer</a>. He and my father died the same year. I had my hands full with the rest of the family — I'm the caregiver for my mom — and thought I'd be OK being on my own. As time went by, I began to think, "You're in your late 60s, and that's too young to be alone."<h2>My daughter bought me a dating course</h2>After I went through several scam attempts, my youngest daughter bought me an online-dating course. At first, I said I wouldn't do it."You've got to be kidding," I told her. She said, "Yes, you are, Mom. The coach, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/angelanicoleholton/">Angela Nicole Holton</a>, said the course was directed at women looking for love from "the inside out." I needed to build my self-worth before looking for a relationship. It took awhile for me to be convinced."Oh, my God, the rest of the girls on this call are all young," I thought during the first session. "And I'm an old person. This is ridiculous."I felt so out of place.I told Angela that I was dropping out. "No, you're not," she said. "You stick it out." And I did. The course wasn't just about dating. It was about prioritizing and learning about yourself — what you really want from life. After a while, like a lot of the women in the course, I thought: "Why would you not want to meet somebody else?"<h2>Our wedding was magical</h2>Evans and I went out a couple of times after our lunch at Applebee's. He started coming over on weekends. We both had doubts."Why would you want to be with me?" Evans asked me once. "We've already lived a whole lifetime with our spouses who died."But it was nice to have shared interests and companionship. It felt right.We started going out in July 2020, and Evans proposed five months later on Christmas Day. He put the engagement-ring box inside several other boxes. I thought it was going to be something like slippers, judging by the size of the box. But then I kept unwrapping and figured it was a ring. I said yes straight away.It made sense for Angela to officiate our wedding — after all, she'd bought Evans and me together — in May 2021. We had a small ceremony at home in front of family, friends, and neighbors. We had a two-tier cake made of vanilla cream. We went on a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/honeymoon-word-meaning-etymology-2017-3">honeymoon</a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/live-and-work-remotely-in-bermuda-residency-certificate-2020-7">Bermuda</a>, where I was born and raised. We went to Disney World with my daughter's family last year and recently returned from a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/cheap-glacier-cruise-best-part-of-my-alaska-trip-phillips-cruises-2023">cruise</a> in Alaska. We enjoy being on our own or with our families. Everybody gets along. If you give it a chance, your life can go on when you're older. Why not live more at any age?I just watched "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/dating-coach-tips-older-daters-the-golden-bachelor-2023-09">The Golden Bachelor</a>." The bachelor, Gerry Turner, is 71, and the female contestants are between the ages of 60 and 75. Without radical changes, TikTok <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-tiktok-ban-why-do-they-want-to-ban-2022-12">could vanish from the US</a>. The renewed "Made in America" trend is going to make things like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/made-in-america-products-more-expensive-2022-12">clothing and electronics more expensive</a>. These are all huge storylines for 2023 driven by increasing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-fighter-jet-flew-within-feet-of-us-military-aircraft-2022-12">tensions</a> between China and the US. Big tech companies are making their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stack-ranking-examples-facebook-salesforce-google-2022-12">performance reviews tougher</a>. Tech founders are applauding Elon Musk's brutal crackdown at Twitter and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-hardcore-twitter-culture-inspires-fellow-tech-founders-2022-12">may look to follow suit</a>. Our predictions for big themes in 2023, from China tensions to the abundance agenda and tech discipline

<a href="https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/worker-walks-by-a-linknyc-sign-reading-staying-home-saves-news-photo/1216481135?adppopup=true">Cindy Ord/Getty Images</a>A USPS worker walks by a LinkNYC sign reading 'Staying home saves lives' as the coronavirus continues to spread across the United States on April 2, 2020 in New York City<ul class="summary-list"><li>Business Insider spoke to two USPS mail carriers this week who say their employers are doing too little to protect them during the coronavirus outbreak.</li><li>They reported unsanitary conditions in post offices and mail trucks, and said they were not getting protective equipment like gloves and face masks.</li><li>One resorted to making her own sanitizer at home from bleach, another is buying gloves and masks at inflated prices online.</li><li>The USPS did not answer their concerns directly, but said in a statement that it is taking action to limit the risk of its staff getting infected. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>With many Americans under orders to stay at home, work continues as usual for the United States Postal Service, which has been deemed an "essential" business.But mail carriers are concerned that their current working conditions have left them as sitting ducks during the coronavirus pandemic.Business Insider spoke to two mail carriers this week who said social distancing is not being enforced in their workplace, heightening the risk of infection spreading.They also pointed to post offices and trucks are not being kept clean, and that they have yet to receive protective gear like face masks or gloves.Both were spending their own money on makeshift protection that they argue should be provided universally by their employers.USPS has claimed that it is enforcing social distancing, enhancing its cleanliness, and giving workers protection - but the mail carriers we spoke to said they haven't seen any evidence of this.Both asked to remain anonymous, fearing the loss of their jobs if they spoke publicly.<a href="https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/letter-carrier-crosses-a-quiet-boylston-street-with-greatly-news-photo/1207623322?adppopup=true">Lane Turner/The Boston Globe via Getty Images</a>A USPS letter carrier crosses a quiet Boylston Street with greatly reduced foot and vehicle traffic in Boston on March 18, 2020.<h2>No protective equipment and unsanitary conditions </h2>One mail carrier in the Sun Coast region of Florida said the Postal Service hasn't been supplying them with masks, gloves, or even keeping hand sanitizer in the office and their trucks.She said she's instead making a bleach solution at home to clean her truck."Given the fact that we see customers every single day, I just feel like they could do a better job in making sure we have safe, sanitized working conditions."That's just not happening, largely in part due to a lack of availability" of protective products, she said.Another mail carrier at a post office outside Stockton, California, said the only protection he was aware of was a big container of hand sanitizer his supervisor keeps on their desk.HandoutA postal worker in California sent us this picture of his dirty mail carrier van. The two workers we spoke with concern about the hygiene levels in their workplace."They aren't taking this very seriously in my opinion at all," he said. "We don't have masks. There isn't social distancing...In the back [of the post office] you're nearly shoulder to shoulder with everyone, all the time."His position at the USPS requires him to fill in where he's needed, which means sharing trucks with other carriers, which he worries about.Because he hasn't got masks or gloves from the USPS, the worker said he's resorted to buying masks and gloves off the internet for high prices - $60 for a pack of reusable masks off Etsy, and $50 for rubber gloves.<h2>The public don't take social distancing seriously</h2>The California carrier said the thing that worries him the most is how members of the public keep flouting social distancing measures to interact with him on a daily basis.One of the measures that the Postal Service has taken so far is discontinuing the need for customer signatures, and allowing workers to drop items off instead of passing them directly to a recipient. But that doesn't matter if the public aren't keeping their distance."The public, to be honest, are even more clueless," he said. "I hate to put it that way, everyone I encounter is nice and friendly."But we've been told not to go up to people and the first thing 50% of the people do as soon as they hear me, is walk out of their house, literally up to me, to grab the mail. Maybe because it's something to do. That's the scariest part of my day."<h2>It's only a matter of time HandoutThe California carrier showed us this picture of a dirty bathroom at his post office, as evidence that the agency is not cleaning seriously during the coronavirus outbreak.</h2>Both mail carriers said they feel it is only a matter of time before they get the virus, or worse - pass it to someone in their family.The Florida carrier said the threat that she or one of her coworkers could get the virus is "very real" and "just waiting to happen.""Who's to say someone in our office hasn't already had it?" she said."We're short-staffed, which means that those of us who are there are working for roughly 10 hours a day, six days on... We're more fatigued and more susceptible to the virus."The California carrier said he thinks his chances of getting the virus are "bad.""As the days go by, I think until we get masks, it's probable" that he will get it, he said.Both said the USPS should make more of an effort to supply their workers with protective equipment and make hand sanitizer widely available.<h2>More than 250 Postal Service workers have been infected</h2>Both said that they didn't know of any of their coworkers getting sick yet. But the same can't be said for the Postal Service as a whole. Carolyn Maloney and Gerry Connolly introduced a bill that would give $25 billion in emergency funding to the USPS. It includes the creation of temporary delivery points to help protect workers from potential exposure to coronavirus.<h2>What the USPS had to say</h2>Business Insider sent a detailed request for comment to the Postal Service on Thursday. However, spokesman Dave Partenheimer did not directly answer the questions, instead forwarding a recent USPS statement on the matter.Partenheimer said he wanted to stress "that the safety of our employees and customers is our highest priority." That alone is enough to incite fear in many Los Angeles residents.But LA county officials are warning that there will likely another terrifying side effect of the coming torrential downpours: The water could unearth previously buried skeletal remains and floods could send them down the mountains.This caution came after hunters and hikers in the Angeles National Forest found a skull, a spine, a pelvic bone, a femur, and a hand over Halloween weekend, the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-angeles-national-forest-bones-found-20151103-story.html">Los Angeles Times reports</a>. Just a few weeks prior, a separate skull had been found about 100 miles east in Glendora Ridge, according to <a href="http://laist.com/2015/10/13/human_bones_found_in_angeles_nation.php">LAist</a>.Officials aren't sure who these bones belong to, or what the cause of death was, but they estimate that an increase in rain will likely cause more skeletal remains to come washing down the hill.This 1,000-mile-square-foot swath of forest, which sprawls just 50 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, and other ranges surrounding Los Angeles have been the site of many gruesome findings in the past. A hiker found <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-body-angeles-national-forest-20150920-story.html">a dead body</a> in a canyon there in September, and dog walkers discovered a man's head, two hands, and two feet in the Hollywood Hills in January 2012.The forest has had a long history of being a receptacle for dead bodies, given the ideal set up for criminals."It is close to the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which gives access to somebody who needs to get rid of remains," Gerry Biehn, a detective at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/1995-11-26/local/me-7410_1_angeles-national-forest">told the Los Angeles Times</a> in 1995.
