"We met and had an amazing collaboration where we spoke about breakups — she's suffered a few in her day — and she really had keen observations. After her latest breakup, she decides to collect them all and make an art exhibit with them, causing a viral sensation as other people want to contribute to it.<p>To support the movie, Gomez filmed a brief video introduction before the movie plays, but Krinsky said that wasn't all.</p><p>The director said Gomez's greatest contribution was her input on how young women hang out these days.</p><p>"The things that establish those bonds of friendship are like sitting around your apartment and drinking wine and eating out of the same pot of pasta, just kind of hanging out," Krinsky said.</p><p>"We talked a lot about that. Just being with your friends. I made sure to keep that stuff in the movie."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider spoke to actress <keyword id="8124503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Geraldine-Viswanathan">Geraldine Viswanathan</keyword> about her rise in Hollywood and her big star turn in the rom-com "<keyword id="9379841" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-broken-hearts-gallery">The Broken Hearts Gallery</keyword>."</li><li>Viswanathan opens up about the challenges to build a career in her home country of Australia.</li><li>She also explains the realization of how important it is being a woman of color in lead roles.</li></ul><p>Director Natalie Krinsky was deep into her search for an actress to play the lead in her directorial debut, the rom-com "The Broken Hearts Gallery," when Geraldine Viswanathan came on her radar.</p><p>At first, she was like most of the other candidates. Krinsky received an email praising the young actress's talents, which led to the director glancing at some of her work, and finally Krinsky agreeing to chat over FaceTime with Viswanathan. And that's when the mundane casting search got interesting.</p><p>"She just has a quiet fearlessness in person and her face, she can do so much silently," Krinsky told Insider over the phone from Los Angeles, gushing about that virtual first meeting with Viswanathan. "I mean, those eyebrows! You could write an ode to those eyebrows. Just the rhythm of comedy, she has a sixth sense."</p><p>After talking a little about the movie, the conversation quickly led to their own lives and for the next hour, they talked like two old friends who hadn't spoken in ages.</p><p>The call ended and Krinsky thought to herself: <em>That's it. That's her.</em> Her lead was cast.</p><p>Gradually, more and more people are starting to recognize the same thing Krinsky did: that Geraldine Viswanathan is a star in the making.</p><div type="image" title="Blockers Movie John Cena " height="773" width="1030" msid="78020092" hostid="261"></div><h2>Geraldine Viswanathan had breakout roles in the movie '<keyword id="1309795" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="blockers">Blockers</keyword>' and HBO's '<keyword id="910456" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bad-Education">Bad Education</keyword>'</h2><p>Her breakout role in the 2018 comedy "Blockers" put everyone on notice. In a movie in which she's positioned as the jock in a group of gal pals who vow to lose their virginity on prom night, Viswanathan turns the role into a scene-stealing performance thanks to her sarcastic wit.</p><p>She followed that with the 2019 indie movie "Hala." In the lead role, she shows off her dramatic skills in this coming-of-age story in which she plays a Muslim teen. Viswanathan has continued the impressive dramatic work this year in the HBO movie "Bad Education," in which she holds her own opposite Hugh Jackman as a dogged student newspaper reporter who uncovers a huge embezzlement scheme by its superintendent (Jackman).</p><p>She's also a regular on the TBS series "Miracle Workers" and played Tawnie on season 6 of Netflix's "BoJack Horseman."</p><div type="image" title="Bad Education HBO" height="1560" width="3120" msid="78020099" hostid="261"></div><p>In all these instances, and especially "The Broken Hearts Gallery" (in theaters Friday), Viswanathan's talents have grown in front of our eyes. Krinsky is right: The way Viswanathan expresses herself on-screen without uttering a single word is a true gift. "Hala" director Minhal Baig described what Viswanathan can do on screen with just a look as "one of the best things for a director" because you never have to cut around her performance.</p><p>Viswanathan is still trying to come to terms with her success. Partly, she believes her talents have shined because in some ways all the characters are her.</p><p>"I've always been fortunate I can do things that I've been genuinely enthusiastic about," she told Insider over the phone. "All the characters reflect me in some way."</p><h2>Viswanathan said there weren't many roles for Indian actors growing up in Australia</h2><p>Viswanathan is in Palm Springs while talking to me on the phone. She said it's her first time ever at the long-established getaway for Hollywood's biggest names. Though she says the heat on this day is unbearable, she's loving the experience. It's completely different from the woodsy upstate New York locale she's been at through most of the pandemic.</p><p>But it's finally time to go back to work. In the coming days, she'll start going hard on the promotion for "The Broken Hearts Gallery," including a special drive-in screening at the Sony lot in Los Angeles.</p><p>Though from the outside, the fame all seems to be coming together rather quickly for Viswanathan, that's not necessarily the case.</p><p>The 25-year-old Australian (you'd never know from her spot-on American accent but, yes, she's Australian) has been on the grind trying to make it in Hollywood since the age of 15. And before that, she was building her craft in her home country.</p><p>At around 5 years old, Viswanathan caught the performance bug in her hometown of Newcastle. Her Indian father and Swiss mother realized quickly she shined as a performer and were fully supportive to get her proper teaching. Then while on vacation in Los Angeles at the age of 15, she landed a manager and began the grind that most teens go through when they start out that age: trying to make it inside the two gold standards of American childhood <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword>.</p><p>"I was going after Disney and Nickelodeon roles," Viswanathan said looking back. "But I was never good at it."</p><p>Back home in Australia, she went to school and for a moment contemplated going to university to study international studies and media. But Viswanathan decided to pursue acting instead. She found success in the Sydney comedy scene. In her 20s she joined Freudian Nip, an all-female sketch comedy group.</p><p>But Viswanathan had a feeling if she would have a career as an actor, it would be in America. In her experience back home, there wasn't much work for Indian actors outside of the stereotypical work.</p><p>"I mean, my only movie I did in Australia my only line was, 'I'm Shrelankian,'" Viswanathan said with a laugh. "Here in America I didn't feel held back by my ethnicity, which was a really exciting feeling."</p><p>Even with "The Broken Hearts Gallery," Viswanathan said her race was never brought up.</p><p>"I think it was intentional by Natalie to not cast a tiny blonde model," Viswanathan said. "But I never felt like it was a pat on the back that a brown girl is the lead."</p><h2>Viswanathan impressed her director with the ideas she brought to her role in 'The Broken Hearts Gallery'</h2><p>In "The Broken Hearts Gallery" Viswanathan is without argument the movie's fuel. Playing Lucy — a 20-something Brooklynite with dreams of making it big in the art world by using the keepsakes of past lovers to make an art exhibit — Viswanathan delivers a performance that is comedic but goes against many of the rom-com tropes.</p><p>Lucy, as well as her friends Amanda (Molly Gordon) and Nadine (Phillipa Soo), are confident, know what they want, and don't need a man to get them there. In a key moment for Lucy in the movie, where she will receive funding for her exhibit, her former flame (played by Utkarsh Ambudkar) — who becomes interested in Lucy again because he realizes she's going to be the next big thing in the art world — assures Lucy that he will be there every step of the way.</p><p>Without hesitation, Lucy says, "That will not be necessary!" Topping it off it with a f--- off look that is priceless.</p><div type="image" title="Broken Hearts Gallery 3 Sony TriStar Pictures" height="1566" width="2088" msid="78020108" hostid="261"></div><p>Krinsky noted Viswanathan's spot-on delivery in scenes like this weren't her only contribution. The director and actress spent a lot of time collaborating together to tweak the script so it was the most authentic to a woman in today's world.</p><p>"She has the soul of a writer," Krinsky said of her star. "We were able to pour over the script, rehearse scenes, and really pick out the things that weren't working."</p><p>Viswanathan said what excited her was finally playing a role that was her age. After years of landing parts in which she played a high schooler, it was liberating to finally play someone in their twenties. And her ideas of how to play Lucy were constantly flowing into the script.</p><p>"I think she's me on my best days," Viswanathan said of the character. "I related to her a lot, but also was inspired by her outgoingness and how much she wears her heart on her sleeve. That's something I want."</p><div type="image" title="Broken Hearts Gallery 4 Sony TriStar Pictures" height="1418" width="1891" msid="78020113" hostid="261"></div><p>And then when it came to just her performance, Krinsky was taken by how Viswanathan took it upon herself to elevate the material.</p><p>Krinsky recalled how for one of the most dramatic moments of the movie — where Lucy opens up to Nick (Darce Montgomery), the guy she's falling for — the dialogue wasn't powerful enough. After constant reworking and just before filming, Viswanathan took the script with her into the dressing room. After a few moments by herself, she came out and did the scene in one take.</p><p>"It's incredible and that take is what's in the movie," Krinsky said. "The delivery and timing and emotion of it was so profound we didn't do any coverage. We just had it."</p><h2>The dream for Viswanathan is creative control of everything she does</h2><p>Viswanathan said what she's striving for in her career is to be limitless.</p><p>In an industry that is socially conscious more than ever, she believes she's shown up at the perfect time. But Viswanathan believes it's her responsibility to keep it going.</p><p>"I'm uncovering more and more how significant it is to be a woman of color in leading roles," Viswanathan said. "I feel really strongly about doing work that interests me and I feel my younger self would want to see."</p><div type="image" title="hala apple" height="1202" width="1602" msid="78020117" hostid="261"></div><p>So that means she's staying clear of roles that feel stereotypical or don't tell an authentic Indian story.</p><p>And when it comes to the actual work, she says she loves doing an American accent because she gets a kick out of people doing a double-take when she speaks in her real Australian accent.</p><p>"I do feel when I'm doing an American accent it sounds like I'm in a movie, if that makes sense," Viswanathan said. "It feels quite strange for me to try to act in an Australian accent. I always like to tell people when they hear me talk for real that I'm doing a fake Australian accent."</p><div type="image" title="Broken Hearts Gallery Sony TriStar Pictures 1" height="1293" width="1725" msid="78020120" hostid="261"></div><p>Along with that lighthearted vibe, what directors love about working with Viswanathan is the dedication she brings.</p><p>"Geraldine is naturally curious and is a sponge," "Hala" director Minhal Baig said. "She is questioning and always searching for answers for her character, but she is also able to absorb very very quickly."</p><p>Krinsky observed the same thing about Viswanathan, adding, "She has this quality where she's taking everything in and really listening. What she's striving for are projects where she's getting the chance to write, produce, and maybe even direct the stories <em>she</em> wants to tell.</p><p>"I'm definitely working towards all of that," she told Insider. "That's the dream. I'm getting to a place where I feel I have been on enough sets now and have an understanding of how this works."</p><p>"I want that creative control," she said.</p>

How Geraldine Viswanathan went from a scene stealer in 'Blockers' to rom-com queen in 'The Broken Hearts Gallery'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"The Beanie Bubble," streaming now on AppleTV+, tells the story of the rise and fall of Beanie Babies.</li><li>Geraldine Viswanathan plays a fictionalized version of Lina Trivedi.</li></ul><p>In "<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7">The Beanie Bubble</a>," now streaming on AppleTV+, Maya (Geraldine Viswanathan) reads a poem for Stripes, a tiger Beanie Baby. While it's not the real verse, Stripes' poem was the first of dozens of Beanie Baby poems written by the real Maya: Lina Trivedi. </p><p>Trivedi, Ty Inc.'s 12th employee, came up with the idea to include birth dates and rhymes in every Beanie Baby hangtag.</p><p>"I was looking at the tag and how it said 'To:' and 'From:' I was just thinking nobody uses that. Nobody actually gives a Beanie Baby to someone and writes their name on it," Trivedi, now 50, told Insider via phone. "How do we use that space to build some type of connection with people and tie it into content that we can have on our webpage that people will want to come look at and get excited about?"</p><p>After a pitch to CEO Ty Warner, she made a mock-up in Photoshop, writing Stripes' poem "within a couple minutes." Warner tasked her with writing more than 80 Beanie Baby poems in 24 hours. </p><p>Based on <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-60295-20&amp;h=6d8a46e20ebdb8a077ed098c2187945b6bde936685acb702f90c9db486c75d9c&amp;postID=64c7fbfcfa4d08025227ae58&amp;site=in&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FGreat-Beanie-Baby-Bubble-Delusion-ebook%2Fdp%2FB00INIXVPW%2Fref%3Dtmm_kin_swatch_0%3F_encoding%3DUTF8%26qid%3D%26sr%3D">Zac Bissonnette's 2015 bestselling book</a>, "The Beanie Bubble" follows the story of the rise and fall of Beanie Babies with a focus on three women who were close to Warner and instrumental in the company's success. </p><p>Viswanathan plays a fictionalized version of Trivedi who really <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#trivedi-really-pitched-the-idea-for-the-tycom-website-but-she-wasnt-its-sole-creator-7">built and ran the company's website</a> with her brother and wrote an estimated 137 Beanie Baby poems, most of which were penned in three days, not one.</p><p>"I was always nervous that my role was going to be played by someone that doesn't necessarily reflect who I am," a relieved Trivedi, who identifies as Indian American, said of Viswanathan's casting.</p><p>"I was like, 'It's gonna be a white male college kid playing my role," Trivedi said. "That's gonna be so terrible. I'm gonna feel so slighted. Not just for myself, but for women in technology."</p><h2><strong>While the film gets many things right, others are embellished for the screen</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Maya in &quot;The Beanie Bubble.&quot;" height="1174" width="2781" msid="102368088" hostid="261"></div><p>Before the pandemic, Trivedi spoke with a production company that indicated they were working on the adaptation to answer questions about Ty.com crashing on New Year's Eve and to later correct any inaccuracies from Bissonnette's book based on her daughter in the event she was mentioned in the film. </p><p>The film still took some liberties.</p><p>Trivedi was hired at Ty Inc. <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#the-real-maya-lina-trivedi-didnt-join-ty-inc-when-she-was-17-but-she-did-have-to-groom-plush-toy-animals-4">at 19, not 17</a>, while studying sociology at DePaul University in Illinois. She <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#unlike-maya-trivedi-didnt-have-a-cubicle-at-ty-inc-11">didn't have an office cubicle</a> and didn't suggest <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#the-movie-suggests-it-was-mayas-idea-to-retire-beanie-babies-creating-a-supply-and-demand-thats-not-exactly-right-9">the idea to retire Beanie Babies</a>. </p><p>She estimated starting at $10 an hour and getting paid $12.50 an hour by the time she left Ty Inc. at the end of 1997. The film claims she made <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-beanie-bubble-movie-fact-check-2023-7#trivedi-was-paid-1250-not-12-by-the-end-of-her-time-at-ty-inc-16">$12 an hour upon her departure</a>.</p><h2>Trivedi didn't really leave Ty Inc. to work for The Pokémon Company</h2><div type="image" title="Pokemon cards, including a Snorlax, are seen spread out in a hand." height="4016" width="6016" msid="102368089" hostid="261"></div><p>Trivedi laughed when she learned the movie's ending suggested she was swooped up by The Pokémon Company, saying her teenage daughter, a fan of the cards and games, would be thrilled by that detail. </p><p>In reality, when Trivedi left Ty Inc., things weren't easy. A website development business she started with her brother didn't pan out. </p><p>Bissonnette's book claims Trivedi went to jail for a string of felonies and potentially forged postal money orders. While Trivedi denies those claims, she acknowledged being in jail, explaining how it helped shape her.</p><p>"In the '90s, I was in jail for random things all the time," Trivedi said, specifically referencing underage drinking and a dispute with an officer. "I was a rebel against authority. If you give me a ticket and I walk away, I'm not going to court. That was my attitude back then."</p><p>"The important thing to focus on is what I got out of it," Trivedi said of working for three years with a non-profit once she was out of jail, originally making the same money she was at Ty, Inc. "I was basically making jobs accessible to communities that didn't have access to jobs."</p><p>Today, Trivedi's a single mom, living in Wisconsin. She wants to continue carving out a space for women in tech as the cofounder of an AI start-up, <a href="https://joii.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Joii.AI</a>.</p><p>Currently working with a longtime friend on a program to tackle loneliness and social disconnection, their goal is to create an AI that users would "train to emulate their patterns and how they communicate and how they talk to one another for the purpose of connecting with the people they're closest to."</p><h2><strong>Trivedi hasn't reached out to or heard from Ty Warner since leaving Ty Inc.</strong></h2><p>"I know he's a very private person," Trivedi said of Warner, adding, "I don't even know how I would reach out to him. He's so private. It's not like he's on Instagram."</p><p>When asked about Warner, who is played as a bit of an egotistical manchild in "The Beanie Bubble" by Zach Galifianakis, Trivedi described the Ty she knew as "quirky," "intelligent" and "a visionary."</p><div type="image" title="Ty Warner, creator of Beanie Babies toys, shakes hands in a rare appearance to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Beanie Babies toy line at the American International Toy Fair February 16, 2003 at the Jacob K. "He was always very appreciative for everything that I did. He was always very kind and courteous."</p><p>Recently, Trivedi considered trying to reach out when she saw Ty Inc. released <a href="https://beaniepedia.com/beanies/beanie-babies/bones-ii-the-dog/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30th-anniversary versions</a> of some older Beanie Babies, the poems still on her mind.</p><p>"I saw the inside of the tags, and I was like, 'They did that all wrong," Trivedi said with a laugh, suggesting they should've written fresh poems that provided updates on the characters.</p><p>Trivedi almost felt compelled to write new poems to send to Ty Inc., but refrained.</p><p>To this day, she keeps two Stripes Beanies, one of which sits in her car. The tiger shares her birthday, and its poem was written as a personal reflection. She had no idea the impact they may have one day.</p><p>"I had a 12-year-old boy that found out that I wrote the poems to Beanie Babies, and he told me thank you for making the world a better place," Trivedi said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On Tuesday, <keyword id="6358540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sony">Sony</keyword> announced that it will be releasing the rom-com "<keyword id="9379841" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-broken-hearts-gallery">The Broken Hearts Gallery</keyword>," executive produced by <keyword id="121898" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Selena-Gomez">Selena Gomez</keyword>.</li><li>It marks the first major studio release of the summer, as it comes out a week before the highly anticipated "Tenet."</li><li>But will audiences show up?</li><li>Reaction on if it's safe to go back to movie theaters was mixed after the news about "The Broken Hearts Gallery."</li></ul><p>Sony announced on Tuesday that it is jumping ahead of the highly anticipated thriller "Tenet" and opening its romantic comedy "The Broken Hearts Gallery" in theaters on July 10, a week before the Christopher Nolan movie.</p><p>Sony is touting the movie, executive produced by Selena Gomez, as the first major studio wide release of the summer. It will open nine days after the Russell Crowe thriller "Unhinged," which will be the <a href="https://www.insider.com/russell-crowe-unhinged-will-open-in-theaters-july-1-2020-5">first high profile release</a> to go in theaters since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the world.</p><p>"The Broken Hearts Gallery" is the directorial debut of Natalie Krinsky (previously she was a story editor and writer on "Gossip Girl") and stars Geraldine Viswanathan ("Blockers," "Hala," "Bad Education") as a twentysomething New York City art gallery assistant who is an "emotional hoarder." After her latest breakup, she decides to create a pop-up space filled with "items love has left behind," according to the press release.</p><p>"Hearing from more female writers and directors is very much needed," Gomez said in the release. "Natalie is a wonderful talent and I am happy to be a part of her debut film. I understand people's concerns regarding returning to activities we all loved prior to COVID-19. I hope everyone will listen to scientists' recommendations and consider others' health and safety while enjoying the movie theater experience."</p><p><div type="image" title="Tenet Warner Bros" height="700" width="1400" msid="76305184" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Hollywood certainly is trying to get back to normal with theatrical releases beginning to fill the July calendar. Also on Tuesday, AMC, the largest theater chain in the country, announced it <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/09/media/amc-theatres-reopen-earnings/index.html">plans to reopen most of its locations in July</a>.</p><p>But are audiences ready to go back?</p><p>The experience will certainly be a unique one. Theaters that are <a href="https://www.insider.com/fridley-theatres-showing-first-imax-movie-since-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-5">already open in areas of the country</a> are obeying state and CDC regulations by not operating at full capacity, practicing social distancing, and having staff wear masks.</p><p>When "The Broken Hearts Gallery" news broke yesterday, the reaction online was mixed. Some people think it's just plain foolish to go back to a movie theater at this point.</p><p>However, many Selena Gomez fans say they are going.</p><p>And others think it's the right kind of movie to get us all moving forward about feeling OK to go to theaters.</p><p>It's clear there will not be a mass dash back to the theaters next month. It will be a slow, gradual process for mass audiences to feel comfortable to go to the <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> again. But if all goes according to plan there are lots of big titles to choose from as we get deeper into the summer, including "Mulan" on July 24, "Wonder Woman 1984" on August 14, "Bill &amp; Ted Face the Music" on August 21, and "A Quiet Place Part II" on September 4.</p>
