Former Defence Minister and a long-time socialist, <keyword id="58260" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="George-Fernandes">George Fernandes</keyword>,<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/george-fernandes-dies-1441492-2019-01-29"> passed away</a> on Monday in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. Fernandes, who was 88, was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and swine flu.

Today, the average user downloads zero apps per month. <keyword id="51958" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="YES">Yes</keyword>, ZERO. If you are lucky enough that your app is downloaded, after one month just 5% of the users that downloaded your app are using it. If you consider a cost-per-install of say $1.24 (the global average cost), that means you spend ~$25 for a user that sticks on beyond a month and at least $100 for a user that uses the app 3 months after download - and we are not talking about revenue here, much less profit. 
 <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> had caught up a chat with <keyword id="4383309" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="carlos-nicholas-fernandes">Carlos Nicholas Fernandes</keyword>, Founder – Blaze, a digital platform for easy access information to the Indian market. 
 
It is no wonder that only 0.1% of all apps have more than 50,000 installs and the usage numbers on those apps are also a lot lower. In fact, 80% of a user's time is spent on his 3 favourite apps. The important thing is why does this happen? Why does the future of bots look bright? <keyword id="7892" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fernandes">Fernandes</keyword> explains the same with logic. 
 
First, each app has its own user interface, Its own on boarding mechanism, and its own learning curve. Consumers want to get "their jobs done" - they don't have an affinity for apps - it's just that apps were the best way 5 years ago. Today, chat bots that work through a conversational interface is the easiest way for one to get the "job done". 
 
Second, no matter how powerful the phone, consumers have app fatigue - they don't want another app occupying space on their phone, sending them notifications etc. They want things that enhance the functionality of their phones in the most frictionless and lightweight way possible. Adding a chatbot is like adding a contact. No installation or download required; no space on your phone, and instantly (and always) updated. 
 Third, and perhaps most of all, they have a finite amount of time and attention and can't be bothered to switch to a new app for everything. For better or worse, users' favorite apps are <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, Whatsapp, Messenger, and <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> - all that happen to be owned by one company, Facebook.The fact that Snap has steered way from its "Snapchat" roots and identifies itself as a camera company is revelatory of Facebook being a platform and not just an app. Adding a bot allows you to get the information you want through the app you most often use - messaging. This results in substantially higher usage rates and interaction. 
 
What does the future hold? The growth in messaging apps outpaced virtually every category. Messaging is unquestionably the key communication platform for users today. In fact when you think about it, it has been for a long time - starting with the days of SMS. Businesses want to be part of a conversation with consumers and the best way to do that is to be a contact on the messaging app of choice. When you think about it - bots use the most natural user interface - the interface of language. The ability to understand language as a human does not quite exist with bots today,but through clever conversational interface design and presenting the user with a set of pre-selected responses, one can reduce the amount a user has to type to get to the information he needs. Over time, AI bots will get more sophisticated in their ability to understand natural language, but even now, bots provide far more usable user-interfaces than apps. Facebook, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> and a host of other companies view bots as the future and we are very aligned with that vision. We have seen many platforms come and go - today we see messaging as a platform.

Dick Cheney, the last GOP vice president, won't speak either. (Cheney's daughter Liz, the third-ranking House Republican, won't speak and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/house-conservatives-challenge-rep-liz-cheney-question-her-loyalty-to-trump/2020/07/21/4a4c115c-cb71-11ea-b0e3-d55bda07d66a_story.html">doesn't seem welcome</a>.)Paul Ryan, the last Republican Speaker of the House, won't speak and has vanished from politics. Trump leads an ostensibly conservative party, yet it conserves so little. — DP<div type="image" title="Guilfoyle" height="1000" width="2000" msid="77749285" hostid="261"></div>RNC Night 1: Apocalypse GuilfoyleKimberly Guilfoyle, one of the Trump campaign's chief fundraisers, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kimberly-guilfoyle-republican-national-convention-speech-video-2020-8">gave an RNC speech</a> the boss could be proud of. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kimberly-guilfoyle-rnc-speech-vote-trump-or-die-republican-convention-2020-8">In my new column</a>, I argue that Guilfoyle's speech was bombastically unhinged and factually-bereft, and commanded the audience to view Democrats as an existential threat to their lives. Think I'm exaggerating? Here's an excerpt from half-way through the six-minute speech: "They want to destroy this country and everything that we have fought for and hold dear. They want to steal your liberty, your freedom. They want to control what you see and think and believe so that they can control how you live. They want to enslave you to the weak, dependent, liberal victim ideology to the point that you will not recognize this country or yourself."Steal. Control. Enslave. Totally healthy rhetoric coming from a primetime speaker at one of the US' two major political parties' conventions. Guilfoyle — formerly a Fox News host, prosecutor and <a href="https://charlierose.com/videos/14027">first lady of San Francisco</a>, and current girlfriend of Donald Trump, Jr. — wasn't quite through painting the upcoming election as a scorched-earth war of attrition:"Don't let [the Democrats] step on you. Don't let them destroy your families, your lives, and your future. Don't let them kill future generations because they told you and brainwashed you and fed you lies that you weren't good enough."Destroy. Kill. Brainwash.To be clear, Democrats spent last week painting Trump as an existential threat to the country's future, but they at least had some evidence to work with. The US remains crippled by the coronavirus pandemic, thanks in no small part to Trump's disastrous response, which included politicizing the use of masks, attacking states who locked-down at the beginning of the crisis, and putting his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-devotion-cronyism-getting-people-killed-coronavirus-pandemic-covid-2020-5">crony son-in-law Jared Kushner and his rich-kid buddies</a> in charge of securing PPE. The results speak for themselves. Double-digit unemployment. The <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/09/coronavirus-american-failure/614191/">most devastating rate of coronavirus infections and deaths</a> of any rich country in the world. Trump's managed to make <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/american-passports-are-useless-now/615244/">a US passport essentially worthless</a>. (We <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/us-international-travel-covid-19/index.html">can't even go to Canada</a>.) So while the Democrats exaggerated (<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/21/us/politics/fact-check-democrats.html">sometimes called "lying"</a>) plenty during their four-day infomercial, none of the DNC speakers came close to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kimberly-guilfoyle-rnc-speech-vote-trump-or-die-republican-convention-2020-8">the apocalyptic rhetoric of Guilfoyle</a>. And that was only night one. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/anthony-l-fisher">— Anthony Fisher</a><div type="image" title="mark mccloskey" height="600" width="800" msid="77749289" hostid="261"></div>Won't you be my neighbor?The most racist portion of last night's RNC was a sit down with the McCloskeys, the St. Louis couple who brandished weapons to warn protesters away from their mansion during Black Lives Matter protests. Mark and Patricia were there to represent "quiet neighborhoods around the country" and the people who populate them — people concerned about violent protests and "Marxist liberal activists… walking the halls of Congress." The speech was one long racist dog whistle.The chat was one part Saturday Night Live skit, one part time machine. Trump often talks of his base wishing to return to a bygone era, and the McCloskeys took us to 1988, when <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/03/us/politics/bush-willie-horton.html">George HW Bush turned Willie Horton</a> — a Massachusetts prisoner who raped a woman and bound and stabbed her boyfriend while out on furlough from prison — into a campaign issue.None of this is surprising coming from the Trump campaign, even though <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/rnc-meets-charlotte-officially-nominate-trump-n1237835">Trump had promised a more positive</a>, upbeat RNC. Racism was always going to be the message: What's disturbing is who the GOP thinks is an adequate messenger. There is no way you would want the McCloskeys to be your neighbors — a profile of them from the <a href="https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/metro/the-st-louis-couple-charged-with-waving-guns-at-protesters-have-a-long-history-of/article_281d9989-373e-53c3-abcb-ecd0225dd287.html">St. Louis Post-Dispatch illustrates why.</a> They have no decency.Here are some of the highlights:<ul><li>The McCloskeys have "quiet title" suits asserting squatter's rights on land they've "occupied openly and hostilely."</li><li>They are suing their neighborhood group, the Portland Place trustees, claiming they are entitled to a 1,000-plus-square foot triangle of land in front of their property set aside from public use.</li><li>In 2012 Mark McCloskey sued his father (who was sick in a nursing home), his sister, and his father's caretaker for defamation. He dropped the suit in 2013. His father died in 2014.</li><li>Mark McCloskey was written out of his father's will, but he sued for part of what his father left behind anyway. He got $400,000 from his siblings and they do not speak to him.</li><li>In 2013 Mark destroyed beehives built by the Jewish Central Reform Congregation next door. He left a note claiming responsibility and threatening to sue if the hives were replaced. The Synagogue had planned to harvest the honey and eat it during Rosh Hashana.</li><li>The McCloskeys have been accused by members of their neighborhood group of trying to enforce arcane rules to keep gay couples out of the neighborhood.</li></ul>I could go on, because it's a stunning (Trumpian, even) legal record. But it's upsetting and you need to get on with your day. If these are the kind of people you'd want in your neighborhood, good luck and God bless. In more normal times, it's hard to see these people getting a spot in a national convention. But these are not normal times. Before, Republicans at least wanted to seem like decent people representing decent people — but decent people the McCloskeys are not. As the New York Times<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/24/health/fda-blood-plasma.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=HomepageHomepage"> details in this story</a>, FDA leaders and the president claimed the plasma cut COVID deaths 35%, which is not even remotely true.Rather, in one small subset of patients, those who received plasma with higher levels of antibodies died at a lower rate than those who received plasma with lower levels of antibodies. What they said was so completely wrong, in fact, that FDA chief Stephen Hahn <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveFDA/status/1298071620414824452?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1298071620414824452%7Ctwgr%5E&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2020%2F08%2F24%2Fhealth%2Ffda-blood-plasma.htmlhtml">tweeted an apology on Monday </a>for misrepresenting the data. This episode should alarm anyone who hopes the Trump administration can administer a successful vaccination campaign. Once again (see: hydroxychloroquine), the Trump COVID team has approached public health as a form of marketing — acting as if their job is to sell plasma, not stop the pandemic. Trump's greatest skill is hype, but hype is the enemy of public health. The job of public health officials is to build trust, so that the citizens believe what their government is telling them, and then act responsibly. Tony Fauci's straightforward, realistic style grates on the president, who only likes to hear good news. But that kind of harsh honesty encourages listeners to actually believe what you're saying. Hype builds false expectations — deaths down 35%! — and when the treatment fails to meet them, the public is disillusioned, and less likely to trust the next claim you make. With a vaccine, this could be disastrous. As vaccine experts say: Vaccines don't work. Vaccination works. If you create a safe and effective vaccine but citizens refuse to take it, you've failed. The <keyword id="42963" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-award">Padma Award</keyword> ceremonies scheduled to be held on March 26 and April 3 have been postponed in view of the <keyword id="8595403" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coronavirus-outbreak">coronavirus outbreak</keyword>, officials said on Saturday. The Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours of the country, are conferred in three categories -- Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Padma Award ceremonies scheduled for March 26 and April 3 stand postponed, a Home Ministry official said. The Padma Awards were announced on the eve of Republic Day. This year, the President has approved conferment of 141 Padma Awards, including four duo cases (in a duo case the award is counted as one). The list comprises of seven Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhushan and 118 Padma Shri awards. Among those named for the Padma Vibhushan this year are former Union ministers Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and George Fernandes (all posthumous). The Padma Bhushan awardees include former defence minister Manohar Parrikar (posthumous) and former governor S C Jamir. The awards are given in various disciplines and fields of activities like art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. These awards are conferred by the President at ceremonial functions held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

I killed my dream to wake up from it. Now my dream is gone," he wrote on his page. After that, he posted some photographs but no written content. His bio on Instagram reads "Actor. Writer. Poet" and mostly has shots of beaches and videos of him driving to scenic places. The dark terror that India went through 40 years ago is something that makes for a legend of sorts. Exactly four decades ago, India died in its spirit bit by bit only to regain its composure after a long gap of 21 months. Though India progressed well on the growth trajectory after that phase, the time is still remembered as one of the darkest hours in the country’s history. 
 
India did not struggle with slavery or racial discrimination then. In 1975, the biggest challenge for the country’s leadership was to silence all the dissent against her and make sure the capitalist forces got to have their say. 
 Legend has it that the order was issued by President <keyword id="513962" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fakhruddin-Ali-Ahmed">Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed</keyword> under Article 352 (1) of the Indian Constitution for ‘internal disturbance’. Clichéd as it sounds, India, indeed, went through the phase of emergency while gasping for breaths in different phases, wondering if this would ever end. 
 
Movements took shape underground, the voiceless, who were silenced temporarily, surfaced in tunnels and dark corridors to find ways of opposing the imposition that the government had forced on them.

Her son, who was considered the heir to the throne -- though dynastic politics was not in the spirit of Indian Constitution – <keyword id="134281" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjay-Gandhi">Sanjay Gandhi</keyword> organised and conducted mass sterilisation programmes. Pogrom would be a better word, to use, when referring to this in reality. 
 
For having forced the country to go through the worst phase ever, Indira Gandhi got a fitting answer from the citizens of the country. She lost the elections that came up much after Emergency was lifted. The icon of oppression, Sanjay Gandhi, subsequently died in an air crash. Indira Gandhi continued to rule till she was assassinated in early 80s. 
 
What was the confidence that Indira Gandhi gained to be able to impose a situation that was termed Emergency, while in true spirit and meaning it was much more than a mere time of haste. It was a grand display of dictatorial aura, the unfathomable truth that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. 
 
Indira Gandhi was much more than being a charismatic leader. She outrivalled her detractors and had created a path of her own. It was untested and untrodden. As a result, it was dangerous too. Time proved it again. 
 
For Emergency-like situation to be imposed on the country’s psyche, the resilience was at stake. It was a test the country’s mettle took and passed with flying colours. While Indian in Emergency wept at the fate it had arrived at, the situation also stoked the fire. Just as there were cronies and loyalists; heroes and martyrs were also born out of the same political situation. 
 
The same political unrest that had forced Indira Gandhi towards a knee-jerk reaction and design an Emergency, had also allowed the leaders across board to consolidate their forces against her. Student unrest also went a long way in planning the response to the whole situation. 
 
George Fernandes, a socialist labour leader, who raised his handcuffed hands to the cameras turned into the symbol of strength and the answer the situation had forced people to give. What if she had not imposed Emergency? India would have respected her as a leader and that’s it. 
 
She would have been mostly considered one of the weakest leaders for the reason that she had learnt politics on the job and had occupied the chair because of her father’s death; and not solely for the reason that she was capable of delivering the administration according to people’s expectations. 
 
Had the Emergency not been imposed, the sense of security and strength of press, students and Socialist and Leftist forces would have gone unchecked. A country that hasn’t been provoked is a country that does not know its strength. People realised their potential only because they were shown the dictatorial shades. They resisted, and how! 
 
Leaders were lost and leaders were born. The victory was sweeter because in the subsequent elections, Indira Gandhi learnt her most valuable lesson- you cannot silence voices by shutting the door. She left behind a very important lesson for the country to remember. Only, our memory needs to be long and strong. Else, we will be forced to learn the lesson all over again.
