Reporting Khelif to be a man, based solely on reported biological characteristics is highly misleading when discussing both the medical and societal implications of gender identity. Sex typically refers to biological differences — chromosomes, hormones, and reproductive anatomy. Gender, however, encompasses the social roles, behaviours, and identities that individuals embody, which may or may not align with their biological sex. A helpful way to think about this distinction is by analogy. Consider how some people have genetically blue eyes while others have brown eyes — these are inherent biological characteristics. In fact, one of the most surprising takeaways was that a whopping 60% of respondents admitted they were either “neutral,” “dissatisfied,” or “very dissatisfied” with their sex lives. <h2>What do men and women want?</h2>While both men and women are equally satisfied — or dissatisfied — with their sex lives, what they wanted differed. For one, a fifth of the people noted that they had mismatched sex drives. And this trend only gets worse as the relationship progresses. By the fifth year, nearly 40% of the men noted feeling like their partners had a lower <keyword id="20579599" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="libido" source="keywords">libido</keyword> than theirs. Meanwhile, 25% of the women rated their libido as “low” or “nonexistent”, which is a horrifying two times as many men. Despite the fact that 57% reported the need for more consistent sexual experiences, the data found that a large number of them were already having pretty regular sex. Interestingly, a few respondents also highlighted <keyword id="20053428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="physical-activity" source="keywords">physical activity</keyword> as a libido booster. In fact, as per the report, those who exercised were 22% likelier to report being “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their sex lives, with many noting that their daily workouts helps increase their sexual confidence by heaps! Micron did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.<h2 id="f746dd30-b0bf-4eec-9c37-7c263414fbd7">Few women in leadership</h2>One former Intel process engineer, who still works in the chips industry, said she decided to leave the company because she felt that it could be a "hostile environment" at times, with male engineers challenging her when they were not rewarded with projects. The engineer, whose identity is known to Business Insider, asked to remain anonymous because she's not authorized to speak to the press."There were also other high-performing men on my team who were getting the same projects and same opportunities as me, but there were never any complaints made about them," she said.Although Intel made more efforts to hire women, she said she did not see as much effort in promotion. Out of hundreds of people in her department, only two managers were female, she said.A lack of women in leadership can create the perception that female employees have no room to grow, resulting in a higher turnover rate."Attracting talent without a plan to retain the talent just really creates the same cyclical problem," said Jared Tatham, a managing director at Insight Global who oversees its semiconductor recruitment portfolio.<h2 id="2f606934-b1c0-4157-9b12-1401d857878e">Reducing bias in hiring</h2>Clients have requested more gender diversity in the pipeline, said Luke Tomaszko, a managing principal consultant at Acceler8 Talent who works with early-stage hardware companies that focus on AI chip design. He said startups must be conscious of this as they build out the culture and makeup of their teams."The industry can be so male-dominated that if you have a team of 100 men, then it's not really a welcoming environment for a woman to come in," Tomaszko said.Insight Global's Tatham works with clients that range from material suppliers for equipment at foundries to companies that do chip design, testing, and packaging. He said he makes it a goal to reach out with calls more personally with potential candidates rather than just rely upon the job descriptions since <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://hbr.org/2022/07/apply-to-a-job-even-if-you-dont-meet-all-criteria">men are more likely</a> to apply for jobs even if they don't meet all the criteria.Tomaszko said that before posting job descriptions, his agency runs the listings through tools such as a <a target="_blank" href="https://adminvc.ucla.edu/equity/hiring-guide/gender-decoder">gender decoder</a> to review words that may have a gender-biased leaning.<h2 id="a8c5aaf0-fcbe-47d6-b532-9085cb10fdb8">Demanding schedules and childcare</h2>The CHIPS and Science Act spurred some efforts to reduce childcare costs. Micron received <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/04/25/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-up-to-6-1-billion-preliminary-agreement-with-micron-under-the-chips-and-science-act/">$6.1 billion</a> in funding this year, including for the construction of new childcare facilities in Idaho and New York. However, childcare is only one facet of improving the pipeline.The schedule of a chip fab may also be a challenge. The former Intel process engineer said that the on-call schedule, which meant she would have to cover in case anything went wrong at the factory, was "definitely" something that made her think about how it would affect longer-term family planning."When you're woken up multiple times during the night, and then you have to do your whole day the following day, I imagine that'd be particularly challenging for birthing mothers. You'd have to stay physically within two hours of the factory that entire week, just in case of any emergency," she said.Closing the gender gap in the chip industry will require more efforts from companies and top leadership to make these career paths more inclusive and stable. Some women say there have been some improvements in inclusivity and building community.The former process engineer said that she now takes part in an all-women cohort at her company that has monthly meetings. In these meetings, they discuss podcasts and readings about leadership, and company veterans and newcomers alike can share different ideas."It's not just like one person leading it. Chip companies like Nvidia and Intel are facing a major gender gap amid the AI boom

Her star rose fast in college. She became the leading basketball scorer in NCAA history — for men and women — and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caitlin-clark-iowa-strength-training-improvement-2023-season-2023-3">smashed all kinds of other records</a>, drawing legions of new fans and also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/21/business/caitlin-clark-wilson-basketball-deal/index.html">historic partnership deals</a>. Since being drafted into the <keyword id="20896960" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WNBA" source="keywords">WNBA</keyword> in April as the No. 1 overall pick, Clark is having an impressive, albeit inconsistent, rookie campaign. She has struggled at times with the increased physicality at this level, which is extremely normal. But nothing that Clark does — or that is done to Clark — is treated as normal. On Sunday, Clark was flagrant-fouled by the Chicago Sky's Angel Reese in the third quarter, and it made headline news on CNN, Fox News, ESPN, Bleacher Report, and even <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2024/06/angel-reese-flagrant-foul-caitlin-clark-1235974988/">Deadline</a>, the Hollywood news site. That was just the latest bulletin in a months-long news cycle trailing everything Clark does. ESPN's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=5dfd1603b360c308dabac9bedad0a8dffaa631c279bb45f715b8724a98013005&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fvideo%2Fclip%2F_%2Fid%2F40275745">Stephen A. Smith</a> said WNBA players should go easier on Clark in games if they want to keep up record viewership: "Protect the golden goose." When Clark was not picked for the Olympic team in June — likely because of Team USA's depth at the guard position and Clark's lack of international experience — Republican governor Nikki Haley, a Republican former governor of South Carolina, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/nikkihaley/status/1799866622947033259?s=46">tweeted in outrage:</a> "I think the Olympic selection committee should be asked do we want the best team to represent our country or not?" After Clark was hard-fouled in a recent game, a GOP congressman from Indiana wrote an open letter to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, asking her to do something about "<a target="_blank" href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/05/sports/congressman-asks-wnba-to-curb-physical-play-on-caitlin-clark/amp/">excessive</a>" physical play. He said Clark's "exceptionalism" was being met with "resentment and repeated attacks from fellow players." <div type="image" title="Caitlin Clark just signed a deal with Wilson, the basketball manufacturer — a first for any athlete since Michael Jordan" height="683" width="1024" msid="111114748" hostid="261"></div>All this attention positions Clark as the de facto face of the WNBA, which is predominantly Black with a strong and vocal LGBTQ population. Clark, herself, largely stays out of it. She doesn't comment on the uproar, except to say she's focused on playing basketball. And yet, her name has become a kerosene canister to inflame a thinly-veiled debate about race, gender, and representation in America. These days, watching Caitlin Clark play basketball has become a <keyword id="8151448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rorschach-test" source="Orion">Rorschach test</keyword> for a deeply divided country. <h2>How Caitlin Clark become the center of a <keyword id="22159409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="culture-war" source="keywords">culture war</keyword></h2>Being a female athlete is inherently an act of <keyword id="22159411" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-defiance" source="keywords">political defiance</keyword>. In the US, it took a 1972 law about <keyword id="20250318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-equality" source="keywords">gender equality</keyword> in education, Title IX, to inadvertently drag public institutions kicking and screaming into providing resources for women's sport, and many <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2024/college-title-ix-gender-equity-compliance-gao-report-1234778480/">remain noncompliant today</a>. Four years ago, WNBA players actually helped<a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/first-person/22221250/georgia-election-results-senate-warnock-ossoff-wnba-elizabeth-williams"> flip a Senate seat in Georgia</a>. In recent years, we've seen some outspoken <keyword id="20958966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="female-athletes" source="keywords">female athletes</keyword> used as props to push political agendas, most notably Megan Rapinoe, the women's soccer player who became a target for her outspoken hatred of Donald Trump, and Brittney Griner, the WNBA player who was wrongfully imprisoned in Russia for most of 2022. Clark is different. She, herself, does not talk politics. She shoots threes and dishes dimes. She attends her contractual media interviews, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">fields offers from the world's biggest shoe brands</a> who have been trying to partner with her since she was at school. But it's getting tougher for Clark (and the rest of the WNBA) to focus on work alone. Fouls that wouldn't even be a footnote in NBA coverage — fouls that other women across the WNBA commit and take every game — are suddenly talking points. Male sports commentators who have never given the WNBA airtime are dedicating<a target="_blank" href="https://www.the-sun.com/sport/11661889/angel-reese-skip-bayless-undisputed-caitlin-clark-wnba/"> multiple </a><a target="_blank" href="https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/stephen-a-smith-players-jealous-caitlin-clark.html">segments</a> to Clark's Black opponents, calling them jealous bullies who are out to hurt her. Matt Leinart, a former football player-turned-media personality, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MattLeinartQB/status/1802403432076296466">said</a> on X that the WNBA should suspend Reese for an unintentional foul because it was "bad for the game." ESPN's Pat McAfee, a football pundit, compared Clark to Eminem in an inflammatory rant, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/wnba/pat-mcafee-caitlin-clark-controversial-rant">saying</a> that people don't want to give her credit because she's white. Last week, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=47bdb23dc6e6a8ccd55b14f47741d5dc6d6aabbe15a67b9047e0027724fb0486&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40288404%2Fsecurity-steps-man-sky-chennedy-carter-team-hotel">security had to intervene</a> whenChennedy Carter, a Chicago Sky player, was confronted by a man outside a hotel in Washington, DC. The man was demanding to know if Carter had reached out to Clark after hard-fouling her in a recent game — a play that, while excessive, was overdramatized by a GOP congressman to issue a formal complaint to the WNBA. Fellow WNBA players started making statements, calling for the firestorm to stop. Many Black players, including Clark's own teammates, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/_Breezy_Briii/status/1798537220628107660">spoke up</a> about experiencing excessive racist abuse on social media in recent weeks. When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5563352/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-wnba-indiana-fever-dijonai-carrington-basketball/">asked</a> about her name being used "as a weapon in the culture wars dividing the country," Clark initially side-stepped the question. "I don't see it. That's not where my focus is," she said. "My focus is here and on basketball. That's where it needs to be, that's where it has been, and I'm just trying to get better on a daily basis." Some WNBA fans and players took issue with that response. "Silence is a luxury," Connecticut Sun forward Dijonai Carrington <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DijonaiVictoria/status/1801356856985850161">wrote on X</a>. Carrington vocalized a brewing frustration about one (white, straight) rookie being awarded more mainstream credit, plaudits, and sympathy than we've ever really seen in the WNBA's existence. <div type="image" title="Chicago Sky" height="683" width="1024" msid="111114742" hostid="261"></div>Black women built, sustained, at times even saved the WNBA during its first 28 years. Their stories often go untold: a study found that in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.powerplays.news/p/racisms-central-role-in-wnba-coverage">four of the five most talked about WNBA players</a> in the media were white, despite 80% of the postseason awards being won by Black players. And their compensation falls short, too. Media fanfare propelled Clarkinto a historic $28 million deal with Nike, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/caitlin-clark-nike-deal-415ee8ec">reportedly came with a signature shoe</a>— a huge moment for women's basketball, but one that stoked controversy because the only other two WNBA players with signature shoes, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, are also white. (Two weeks later, Nike said A'ja Wilson, a Black two-time MVP who has been with Nike since she was the top draft pick in 2018, will have a signature shoe in 2025.) The hope that this new era of WNBA fandom could be everything for everyone is turning into exasperation. <h2>This all says more about commentators than it does about Clark</h2> <div type="image" title="Caitlin Clark is in a unique position, thrust into a role of advocate and spokesperson for the WNBA." height="683" width="1024" msid="111114752" hostid="261"></div>The chaotic coverage of Clark doesn't tell us much about her or the league. It does underscore that the sports media ecosystem is wholly unprepared for the rise of women's basketball. Even before Clark, the price of the WNBA's media rights deal was expected to double in 2025, bringing a game-changing influx of cash to the table — money that can turn salaries from livable to luxurious, and investments into profit. But this moment, which has been building for decades, is being undercut by commentators and brands who are fixated on Clark. While there's no doubt her exceptional skill is a big reason why <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=854d906b2c55a75f0a812ef8aca1a188c38bcd7da3106113ddd163fc78b1aa5c&amp;postID=6671adcfb38735ca9df3934c&amp;postSlug=caitlin-clark-is-a-rorschach-test-for-sports-media-2024-6&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40326422%2Fwnba-earns-record-tv-ratings-1st-month-record-attendance">ratings nearly tripled</a> during the first month of the season, it doesn't do Clark or the WNBA any favors to paint her as a precious legend in a league of her own who needs to be protected. All these projections — from Clark's supporters and detractors — infantilize every player on the court. She is strong, and played the best game of her WNBA career so far on Sunday. She's working hard to diversify her game, to adjust to the next level, on and off the court. In one of her most recent interviews, Clark got more direct than ever. "Everybody in our world deserves the same amount of respect," Clark told James Boyd of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5564661/2024/06/14/caitlin-clark-agenda-comments/">The Athletic</a>. "The women in our league deserve the same amount of respect, so people should not be using my name to push those agendas." She's growing. It's time for the rest of us to do the same. Caitlin Clark is a Rorschach test

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Every school year, I came out to my college students and was usually accepted.</li><li>But coming out was mentally taxing, so I'm not coming out to my students this year.</li></ul>My voice trembled, and my heart pounded as I stood before the class of about 30 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-student-studying-abroad-classmates-taking-luxury-trips-2024-4">college students</a> on the first day of English Composition 101."I didn't get to read many LGBTQ+ authors growing up," I said. Then, taking a deep breath, I took the plunge: "As a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/straight-passing-woman-come-out-all-the-time-2024-7">queer person</a> myself, I believe we need to see ourselves represented in books."When I taught 18-year-old <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-move-tasks-parents-forgetting-to-do-2024-8">college freshmen</a>, it felt like jumping off a cliff every time I came out to a new class — usually on the first day. I loved introducing the students to the acclaimed queer authors who helped me feel comfortable in my own skin when I was a teenager.The authors' names — Michael Cunningham, Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Allison, and Alice Walker — are still sacred to me today.But now, I'm no longer coming out to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-shop-for-back-to-school-without-spending-tons-2024-8">my students</a> and still prioritizing their education.<h2 id="a9aea97e-a5a4-4d4f-829a-d00e4708f833">I felt freer as a queer educator, but it came at a price</h2>It was the early 2000s, and in many ways, it was a more welcoming environment for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-teachers-advised-against-talking-about-same-sex-partners-report-2022-8">LGBTQ+ teachers</a>.Still, when I taught college in New York state, queer teachers' freedom was new and fragile. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colleges-pay-best-for-their-cost-return-on-investment-roi-2023-4">Colleges and universities</a> have always tended to be more open for queer teachers than K-12 schools, but I was still scared to come out as an untenured teacher working with teens — many of whom were religious. There was always fear that I'd be punished for announcing who I am.Thankfully, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/refuse-come-out-family-friends-2024-8">coming out</a> was almost always positive. Students smiled or seemed immediately more relaxed. Only one or two tensed up or looked away, seeming uncomfortable. No one ever got up and left the room.After coming out each semester, I'd move on with my lesson, feeling vulnerable, relieved, and lighter.<h2 id="ea9fc80a-555b-43f6-821e-e8b118a06aa1">I no longer make coming-out announcements</h2>These days, I'm more comfortable in my skin as a queer person, so I don't feel the need to make a formal declaration at work anymore. The fear of retaliation takes too much out of me.But I still ensure my space is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/banking/lgbtq-friendly-banking">queer-friendly</a>.Currently, I'm a school librarian serving elementary and middle school. Even among the youngest of students, I regularly encounter kids identifying as queer or trans. Some students even have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaning-into-my-queer-identity-changed-the-way-i-parent-2022-10">LGBTQ+ parents</a>. So, I still need to create a welcoming environment.My storytime and research lessons emphasize the acceptance of gender diversity. The stories also depict that love can take many shapes and forms. These lessons are also important for students with nontraditional family structures — such as those raised by a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-parent-loneliness-no-partner-202404">single parent</a> or living with grandparents.We read cute, silly, and wise picture books such as "Worm Love Worm" by J. J. Austrian and Mike Curato, where the characters are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nonbinary-fashion-gender-neutral-unisex-clothes-accessories-to-add-to-wardrobe-2023">gender-neutral</a>. In June, I showcase books like "Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Gay Pride Flag" by Rob Sanders and Steven Salerno. Throughout the month, I proudly showcase my progress pride flag in the middle school library and happily explain the symbolism of all the colors and patterns.Queer people are woven into the fabric of my teaching, but I've just chosen not to share who I am anymore to protect my own mental health.<h2 id="477a4732-ae33-4357-8c08-5dcc9f44dc91">Being an LGBTQ-inclusive teacher can save lives</h2>In 2022, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thetrevorproject.org/survey-2022/">Trevor Project </a>found that 45% of LGBTQ+ youth considered suicide in the last year. I feel responsible as an educator to help students grow and thrive — and not feel invisible or ashamed.This September, I will proudly display a copy of my favorite gender-expansive book, "Teo's Tutu" by Maryann Jacob Macia. And when a student asks me what the book is about, I'll say, "It's about learning to be happy in your own skin."I'll invite the students to reflect and connect. "What does being comfortable in your own skin mean to you?"When I started teaching, it felt great to say, "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/struggled-sexuality-college-queer-lgbtq-2023-6">I am queer</a>," out loud. But these days, I celebrate my queerness in my personal life and conserve my energy while I'm at school.

As an educator, I used to come out to my students every September. But I'm keeping my identity to myself this year.

Something strange is happening between <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-changes-political-divides-2019-7">Gen Z men</a> and women. Over the past decade, poll after poll has found that young people are growing more and more divided by gender on a host of political issues. Since 2014, women between the ages of 18 and 29 have steadily become more liberal each year, while young men have not. Today, female Gen Zers are more likely than their male counterparts to vote, care more about political issues, and participate in social movements and protests.While the gender gap is an enduring feature of American politics, at no time in the past quarter century has there been such a rapid divergence between the views of young men and women. The startling speed of the change suggests something more significant is going on than just new demographic patterns, such as rising rates of education or declining adherence to a religion — the change points to some kind of cataclysmal event. After speaking with more than 20 Gen Zers, my colleagues at the Survey Center on American Life and I found that among women, no event was more influential to their political development than the #MeToo movement.In 2017, women around the world began speaking out about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment. Gen Zers were then in high school and college, and for them, the movement came at a formative moment. "Luckily I had that all over social media to shape the way I look at dating and men," a 21-year-old woman told us about #MeToo. She said it allowed her "to use other people's experiences to form a sense of putting a guard up." A 20-year-old woman offered a similar take — that #MeToo empowered her to stand up for herself: "I think it makes me less of a doormat."As I've <a target="_blank" href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-young-women-might-get-more-women-elected/">written previously</a>, the #MeToo movement united women politically. Although the challenges women face vary dramatically in the US, sexual harassment is a ubiquitous experience impacting women across lines of social class, politics, age, and race. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/21/587671849/a-new-survey-finds-eighty-percent-of-women-have-experienced-sexual-harassment#:~:text=It%20found%20that%2081%20percent,sexual%20harassment%20during%20their%20lifetime.">Eight in 10 women</a> say they have been sexually harassed at some point in their lives — and addressing that reality quickly became central for women. After the inauguration of Donald Trump, hundreds of thousands of women marched on Washington in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/largest-marches-us-history-2017-1">largest single-day protest</a> in American history.But while women were rallying together, many Gen Z men began to feel like society was turning against them. As recently as 2019, less than one-third of young men said that they faced discrimination, according to Pew, but today, close to <a target="_blank" href="https://storylines.substack.com/p/why-young-men-are-turning-against">half of young men</a> believe they face at least some discrimination. In a 2020 survey by the research organization PRRI, half of men agreed with the statement: "These days society seems to punish men just for acting like men."It increasingly feels like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-trust-issues-government-business-college-other-people-institutions-2022-8">Gen Z men and women</a> are living on different planets, each guided by the belief that they are navigating uniquely hostile terrain — and understanding why is crucial to bridging the gap.<h2>#MeToo feminism</h2>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-metoo-movement-started-where-its-headed-tarana-burke-time-person-of-year-women-2017-12">#MeToo movement</a> established a sense of solidarity among young women. A survey conducted in 2022 found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">two-thirds</a> of young women believe that in most or in every way, what happens to women in the US will have a bearing on their own lives — an idea known as "linked fate" in sociology. But this sentiment was not shared by older women: Only 36% of women older than 65 said the same. This bond has bled into Gen Z women's politics, especially around issues like abortion. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">survey</a> we conducted after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Roe v. Wade was overturned</a> and just before the 2022 midterms found that no issue mattered more for young women than abortion: 61% said it was a critical concern, while only 32% of young men said the same. In the 2022 midterm elections, all young voters strongly supported Democratic candidates, but young women demonstrated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.slowboring.com/p/are-young-men-really-trending-to?utm_source=%2Fsearch%2Fyoung%2520men%2520and%2520vote&amp;utm_medium=reader2">much greater support than men</a>. Gen Z women have also united around the importance of female leadership and representation. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/09/27/views-of-obstacles-for-women-seeking-high-political-office/">recent Pew poll</a> found that 72% of women aged 18 to 29 believe there are too few women serving in "high political offices," a steep jump from the roughly half of women over 50 and less than half of young men who said the same. More than seven in 10 young women said that the lack of female representation in political office is because women are held to higher standards than men.This newfound <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discrimination-at-work-women-all-ages-jobs-hiring-employer-bosses-2023-8">solidarity among women</a> is also showing up in the workplace. For decades a strong majority of men and women alike had reported a clear preference for a male boss. But the percentage of women who said they preferred a male boss plummeted 12 points between 2014 and 2017. By that year, the year of the most recent polling, a majority of women reported preferring a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/female-managers-pay-employees-more-fairly-salaries-than-males-study-2022-9">female boss</a> for the first time.At the same time, women's dissatisfaction with the status quo has only intensified. In 2016, 61% of women said they were satisfied with the way women are treated in American society, according to a Gallup survey. Today, that has dropped to 44%.<h2>Men shift to the right</h2>As women's political priorities have solidified, young men's priorities have melted into mush. Surveys consistently show that young men are far less likely than women to say any particular issue is personally important to them. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/the-2024-presidential-election-evolving-political-coalitions-and-familiar-partisan-divisions/">survey we conducted last year</a> found that young women expressed statistically significant greater concern for 11 out of 15 different issues, including drug addiction, crime, climate change, and gun violence. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women.Young men are also unhappy. For a growing number, feminism has less to do with promoting gender equality and more to do with simply attacking men. A 2022 survey by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that 46% of Democratic men under 50 agreed that feminism has done more harm than good — even more Republican men agreed. In our recent poll, roughly one in four male Gen Zers said they have experienced more gender discrimination than older men. And <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/generation-z-and-the-transformation-of-american-adolescence-how-gen-zs-formative-experiences-shape-its-politics-priorities-and-future/">less than half of Gen Z men</a> identified as feminists, with only half saying they support the #MeToo movement, compared to 72% of women.One young man we interviewed said he didn't pay much attention to #MeToo: "It just seemed like a bit of buzz going on around celebrities, and awful things are happening in the world all the time. If I did ponder, it would bring me down and so I just choose to not even pay attention." Another said #MeToo was just something he picked up from "a woman's study class" in college but not anything that he thinks much about.The lack of interest could be because Gen Z men have their own issues. Richard Reeves, the founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men, has meticulously documented the challenges facing young men in America: They are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.the74million.org/article/author-richard-reeves-on-the-boys-education-problem-we-dont-like-to-talk-about/">struggling more</a> in school, are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/11/08/whats-behind-the-growing-gap-between-men-and-women-in-college-completion/">less likely</a> than women to go to and graduate from college, have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evryman-mens-group-loneliness-feelings-therapy-2023-8">fewer close friends </a>than previous generations, and are four times as likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-teenage-gen-z-american-suicide-epidemic">commit</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://aibm.org/research/male-suicide/">suicide</a> than women. Reeves argues that this state of affairs requires that we hold two seemingly contradictory ideas at once: Men at the highest rungs of the economic ladder are still advantaged by a system that perpetuates gender inequality, while men on the lower rungs of society face unique challenges because they are men. While women have turned to the left for answers to their problems, men are finding support on the right. Trump helped redefine conservatism as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aide-says-president-is-the-most-masculine-in-us-history-2021-1">distinctly masculine</a> ideology, stoking grievances and directing young men's frustration toward liberals and feminists. There are signs the message is resonating: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-college-republicans-want-gop-to-change-2020-11">Republican affiliation</a> among white men aged 18 to 24 jumped from 28% in 2019 to 41% in 2023, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/dellavolpe/status/1731053473070793013">Harvard Youth Poll</a>. Outside politics, right-leaning figures such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-and-parents-talk-about-andrew-tates-influence-on-kids-2023-1">Andrew Tate</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-dei-is-just-another-word-for-racism-2024-1">Elon Musk</a>, and Jordan Peterson are attracting young men looking for an ideological home.Most young men are probably not interested in making America great again, but they do feel acutely the need to secure a place for themselves in a culture that readily identifies male advantage but ignores the challenges young men face. Out of a sense of increased insecurity, more young men are adopting a zero-sum view of gender equality — if women gain, men will inevitably lose. It's an outlook that makes them defensive, encourages them to ignore or overlook enduring challenges women face in society, and can even spur misogyny. As one 35-year-old man told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2022/09/29/more-than-twice-as-many-americans-support-than-oppose-the-metoo-movement/">Pew in 2022 about #MeToo</a>: "Too many people are taking advantage of a serious situation because it's trendy or they are greedy or just want attention." And this attitude has real-world consequences: In the online gaming world, 75% of Gen Z women have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thegamer.com/women-abuse-sexism-in-online-games-depression/">reported experiencing harassment</a>.<h2>No Winners </h2>An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/03/upshot/fewer-women-run-big-companies-than-men-named-john.html">oft-cited statistic</a> that conveys the enduring absurdity of the gender gap is that until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-04-25/women-ceos-at-big-companies-finally-outnumber-those-named-john">very recently</a>, there were more CEOs named John than CEOs who are women. Across most industries, from politics to academia, men in American society still control more resources, earn higher wages, and enjoy more prestige. But few young men have any experience in the boardroom, and in the classroom, it's their female peers who are crushing it.But both genders are feeling increasingly precarious — and it's causing them to drift further apart. A recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/11/22/marriage-polarization-dating-trump/">Washington Post editorial</a> lamented what this growing political divide means for dating and marriage: If Gen Z men and women can't agree on politics, it's going to get harder for them to find a partner. But if anything, that understates the problem. Based on our interviews, there appears to be a growing eagerness among both young men and women to blame their problems on each other. <ul><li>A married woman’s employability is linked to a mother-in-law’s employment status, husband’s salary and so on, as per a new report.</li><li>For underprivileged <keyword id="121387" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rural-women" source="Orion">rural women</keyword>, there is no marriage and motherhood penalty when it comes to employment.</li><li>Most such women, however, turn into contributing family workers in agriculture and work for subsistence.</li><li>In districts where women have high paid jobs, there are also more cases of domestic violence. </li></ul>One generation leads the other and that’s true in the case of women and their employment status in India. An unemployed mother-in-law can bring down the employability of a married woman and vice-versa, according to the ‘State of Working India 2023’ report by <keyword id="125797" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="azim-premji-university" source="Orion">Azim Premji University</keyword>. Proving that there is an inter-generational effect on gender norms, the report says that a married woman living in a household with an unemployed mother-in-law is less likely to be employed — 20% less likelihood in urban areas, and 30% in rural areas. This is in comparison to households without a mother-in-law. “However, if the mother-in-law was present and employed herself, this is associated with a higher likelihood of women’s participation to the extent of 50% (rural) to 70% (urban) more than households with no mother-in-law present,” the report released on Wednesday said. The husband and his earnings The story of women and employment in India is far from a straight line – many factors including marital status, economic status and motherhood – all have a direct impact on it. For married women especially, the husband’s salary is seen to have a direct impact. The report finds that husband’s income has a U-shaped effect on women’s employability. “A common gender norm is the “male breadwinner” norm, i.e. husbands are considered the primary earners with wives contributing to household income only if necessary,” the report says. In households where the husband’s earnings are high, the probability of the wife being employed is low, controlling for individual and household factors. But it’s not a straight line. After the husband's salary crosses ₹40,000 per month, women’s employability increases, especially in urban areas. “This U-shaped pattern could result from a change in norms with rising incomes or it could also be due to the fact that such husbands are matched with higher educated wives who have preferences as well as opportunities to access better paid work,” the report says. What’s the price of a job? In the case of rural women, marriage and motherhood only improves their employment. However, that’s associated with the fact that they turn into contributing family workers in agricultural work or find or find self-employment. “Thus, for women in the informal economy, rather than a marriage or motherhood penalty for employment, we find the reverse. But the absence of a penalty may not be a positive outcome since it likely reflects a compulsion to work for subsistence,” says the report. But are women happier with more employability? There is no straight answer for this question as well because there is data to show that districts that report high rates of working women also show women saying that they make their own healthcare decisions, own large assets or meet relatives. Yet, independence comes with a painful price for working women – as districts with higher percentages of women with paid working jobs also report higher domestic violence. “The suggested mechanism is that working women are more likely to face partner violence due to challenging of established gender norms,” the report says.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Gay boys do better academically than their male and female peers; queer girls and women do worse.</li><li>Historically, girls have performed better in school than boys, in aggregate. </li></ul>Data about how LGBTQ+ students are doing in schools – both <a href="https://www.wested.org/rd_alert_online/lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-queer-students-experiences-data/">academically</a> and <a href="https://www.edweek.org/leadership/data-lacking-about-how-lgbt-students-are-treated-at-school-researchers-say/2016/03">socially</a> – has, historically, been lacking. One recent study looks to change that. Dr. Joel Mittleman, a sociology professor at the University of Notre Dame, compared the academic performance of straight, gay, and bisexual students.Using adult <keyword id="11956253" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="college" source="Orion">college</keyword> completion rates and new data from <a href="https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/hsls09/">2009's High School Longitudinal Survey</a>, Mittleman found that gay boys outpace their straight and bisexual male peers with respect to grade point averages and college <keyword id="13090428" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="degree" source="Orion">degree</keyword> attainment, and that women's rising academic advantages are largely exclusive to straight women, while lesbian women see a penalty.Gay male students' collegiate success also connects to recent data about their household income, which has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/queer-men-earned-more-queer-women-heterosexual-couples-wage-gap-2022-1">exceeded</a> that of heterosexual and lesbian couples in recent years. Sexual orientation, Mittleman argues, reflects something more broadly about <keyword id="12021081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gender" source="Orion">gender</keyword> roles and how queer students abandoning some traditionally masculine or feminine traits might be linked to behavior and outcomes – namely, that girls typically do better in school than boys.<h2>Queer people "do gender" differently, and that translates to breaking academic norms </h2>Girls have done <a href="https://anderson-review.ucla.edu/boys-gap/">better</a> than boys in the classroom "as long as we've had data on it," Mittleman says, with only societal constraints around <keyword id="11897809" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="higher-education" source="Orion">higher education</keyword> for women limiting their level of academic attainment. In contrast, men's academic attainment has been stagnant, with men born after 1980 only <a href="https://pages.uoregon.edu/eherman/teaching/texts/DiPrete%20&amp;%20Buchmann,%202013%20Briefing%20The-rise-of-women.pdf">slightly more likely</a> to have a bachelor's degree than men born before 1950. But not where queer students are concerned. Across all racial groups, gay men found high levels of educational attainment, surpassing not just straight men, but also straight women. Research shows that boys who do well in school are often the target of homophobic bullying, which might dissuade male students from working hard. Gay boys, Mittleman argues, by virtue of their sexuality, already feel a distance from traditional masculinity, and are therefore encouraged to pursue academic success. "Compared to straight boys from the same high school, gay boys were much more likely to report that they felt unsafe in school and that discrimination had negatively impacted their educational opportunities," he told Insider. "What my study shows is that, despite these challenges, gay men demonstrate a rather remarkable academic resilience."Men in same-gender relationships earn more than both their female counterparts and heterosexual couples, recent data <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/queer-men-earned-more-queer-women-heterosexual-couples-wage-gap-2022-1">shows</a>, and in spite of historical workplace discrimination, queer men have been <a href="https://hbr.org/2017/12/gay-men-used-to-earn-less-than-straight-men-now-they-earn-more">earning</a> about 10% more than straight men with similar <keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">education</keyword> and experience since 2010.These findings about gay men's high college attainment offers some clue to why, other than the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gender-wage-pay-gap-charts-2017-3">wage gap</a> between men and women. College grads still <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-more-college-graduates-earn-than-non-graduates-in-every-state-2019-5">earn</a> more than workers with no university degree, and this body of research shows that gay men are more likely to graduate college. <h2>"The good girl role" is complicated for queer Black and brown girls </h2>For girls, the relationship between academic success and femininity is reversed. A key component of girls' success in classrooms is adherence to the "good girl role," Mittleman writes, which is reflected in modest attire and deference in behavior to teachers. Queer girls reported lower GPAs than straight girls overall in surveys, with bisexual girls averaging a 2.53 out of 4, and gay girls averaging 2.44. Straight girls had a 2.82 on average.The image of the "good girl" is complex, however, often associated with being <a href="https://abc7news.com/black-girls-suspended-more-than-white-pushed-out-school-to-prison-pipeline-school-pushout/10405118/">white</a>, and <a href="https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED502972.pdf">middle-class</a>, according to researchers. That might be why queer white women report high levels of academic attainment, while Black lesbians have been "clearly excluded from the educational advantages that historically accrued to white lesbians," Mittleman says, which skews queer women's academic attainment as a whole. That's reflected by their degree attainment: 3 out of 3 surveys showed gay Black women scoring fewer college degrees than their straight peers, with 2 out of 3 showing the same for Asian women. Gay white women saw higher degree attainment than their straight peers and peers of color by far. In the same way that straight male students shy away from academic achievement because of its association with femininity, queer girls also avoid it. "To the extent that teachers see LGB girls as enacting masculinity, this could make them prime targets for the 'bad girl' penalty," Mittleman says. "This risk could be especially high for Black girls, who are already stereotyped as masculine by white authority figures," Mittleman writes, also noting that discipline rates between straight and queer white girls were virtually the same.As for bisexual students, Mittleman said, the results are less clear-cut, achieving only slightly more college degrees than their straight peers, for instance, but also attaining slightly fewer high school diplomas than straight and gay students on average. Mittleman's guess is that bisexual youth grapple with both the confines of gender that their straight peers face and the rejection of it that their gay ones do. What's sure, he says, is that students' academic behavior is largely a product of their environment. "The gender gap, sociologists show, is not an immutable fact of biology," he said. "It is a contingent product of students' social positions and social contexts." College educators warn that the bills are designed to appease the most ardent of Donald Trump's supporters at the risk of muzzling institutions and professors.Faculty leaders at more than <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gN93avmQQmNKACdnDPU_bIw3ZG02_pxIo3okI0OJXBs/edit">two dozen</a> <keyword id="11897809" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="higher-education" source="Orion">higher education</keyword> institutions are adopting or considering academic freedom resolutions that reject outside interference in university curriculum on matters of race and social justice. And they're calling on university leaders to do the same. "We just wanted to send a message to the <keyword id="11910362" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="florida" source="Orion">Florida</keyword> legislature: Pass all the laws you want. Academic freedom is what we will stand by," said Kathie Russell, president of the Santa Fe College Senate Executive Council in Gainesville, Florida.Russell said the council stands by a <a href="https://courses.sfcollege.edu/courses/370116/files/folder/minutes/2022?preview=42556664">resolution</a> it passed in February, even in light of the Florida state legislature's passage of the "Stop WOKE Act," which would restrict discussions on race and gender in workplaces and classrooms. The bill awaits Florida Gov. <keyword id="11913103" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ron-desantis" source="Orion">Ron DeSantis</keyword>' signature."Academic freedom is the basis, the foundation of our <keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">education</keyword> and to be assaulted like this is insulting," said Russell, who is an English professor at the college.Republican state lawmakers have been targeting the teaching of gender issues and <keyword id="12004885" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="critical-race-theory" source="Orion">critical race theory</keyword>, a framework for studying racism in the US legal system, in an appeal to conservative white voters. So-called "divisive concepts" legislation, so far, has focused more on K-12 schools, but this year's wave of bills is increasingly targeting higher education, as well."There are so many of them across the country, our efforts to protect academic freedom often make us feel like hockey goalies," said Joe Cohn, legislative and policy director at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education or FIRE.Lawsuits are likely. Cohn said decades of case law protects higher education curriculum from government interference. "It's an absolute ironclad rule that thou shalt not take topics off of the table in higher ed," he said. The resolutions that faculty leaders are passing at <keyword id="12924987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="universities" source="Orion">universities</keyword> and colleges across the country are drawing from a template created by the African American Policy Forum, which is led by Kimberlé Crenshaw, a founding critical race theorist. The template states that the faculty rejects any outside attempts to "restrict or dictate university curriculum on any matter, including matters related to racial and social justice."In this moment, passing such resolutions is a significant step for faculty members, but it shouldn't be, said Sumi Cho, director of strategic initiatives at AAPF."That's how far off course we have veered with this whole manufactured panic around race and social justice in education," she said. "It should not raise an eyebrow, but the fact that it is, tells you the state of things right now."Speaking out can lead to consequences for college professors. In Texas, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he will propose ending tenure for new hires at public universities and revoking it for those who teach critical race theory. <a href="https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2022/02/18/lt-gov-dan-patrick-pledges-end-tenure-new-hires-texas-critical-race-theory-crt/6843755001/">That came last month </a>after the University of Texas Faculty Council passed a resolution affirming academic freedom. "I will not stand by and let looney Marxist UT professors poison the minds of young students with Critical Race Theory," <a href="https://twitter.com/danpatrick/status/1493694009600053250">Patrick tweeted in February</a>. "We banned it in publicly funded K-12 and we will ban it in publicly funded higher ed."<div type="image" title="Ron DeSantis" height="1730" width="2307" msid="90160985" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Another bit of legislative meddling'</h2>Even before the Stop WOKE Act, Florida lawmakers had been pushing legislation that concerned educators. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/free-speech-experts-slam-desantis-law-punishing-student-indoctrination-2021-6">One new law</a> requires public universities to survey faculty, students, and staff on their political beliefs to measure "viewpoint diversity" and fight student "indoctrination." It also allows students to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/florida-gov-signs-bill-permitting-college-students-record-professors">use recordings </a>of their professors in class as evidence in political bias complaints, though they must have permission to record.To Santa Fe College professor David Price, Stop WOKE was "just another bit of legislative meddling" that he was already trying to stop when the council passed its resolution. "I was concerned about this general trend from the legislature to micromanage higher education for basically the service of either throwing red meat to Trumpite supporters or furthering conservative indoctrination of especially the classes I teach – history and political science classes," said Price, a member and former president of the Santa Fe College Senate Executive Council.Regarding Stop Woke, he said, "I'll have to think long and hard about whether I'm going to comply" if there are areas in which he's clearly in violation. But similar laws have been so "convoluted and contradictory," he said the only purpose that's been clear has been political. In March, a group of <a href="https://www.aaup.org/news/free-and-open-academic-inquiry-and-debate-our-campuses-essential-our-democracy-and-national#.YivJifXMIq3">94 higher education associations</a> issued a joint statement calling for free and open academic inquiry and debate on campuses. Faculty and university administrators are seeing common ground on this point, said Irene Mulvey, the elected president of the American Association of University Professors, which signed the statement. Administrators and some boards of trustees will consider the restrictive movement dangerous in terms of recruiting and retaining faculty, she said."And they can see the millions of dollars in grants going somewhere else if faculty aren't going to come to a… state where they have, you know, educational gag orders in higher education," she said.Academic freedom principles are often embedded in faculty handbooks. The vast majority of places that have passed these resolutions have not had an issue with their college administrations accepting and affirming them, Cho said.But there are some cases, notably in Florida, where faculty have battled with administrators.
