Friday, 8.55 am. An otherwise empty multiplex is packed. The sound of voices chattering in anticipation reeked of expectations from the actor whose performances used to be accompanied by goosebumps once upon a time. 
 
Of late, his movie choices or acting hasn’t quite been the talk of the town. Sure, some of them did rule the box office and a few even got him awards but it goes without saying that all of them had one thing in common- they hurt. I'm looking at you Dilwale. 
 
And, yet two seconds into the movie-the claps, laughs and the whistles start. The power of<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=srk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Shah Rukh Khan</a>. 
 
That makes <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maneesh+sharma&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Maneesh Sharma’s</a> ‘<keyword id="6385067" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="fan">FAN</keyword>’- <keyword id="1671" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh-Khan">Shah Rukh Khan</keyword>’s first 2016 release in which he essays the role of both an egotistical superstar <keyword id="1389906" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aryan-Khanna">Aryan Khanna</keyword> and his deluded fan <keyword id="1572063" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gaurav-Chandna">Gaurav Chandna</keyword> (with aplomb if I may add) all the more significant. 
 
The question was simple- Has Shah Rukh Khan the star overpowered Shah Rukh Khan the actor to the point of no return? Only 143-minutes of Fan would give us the answer. 
 
And, boy did it give us the answer we were hoping against hope for. 
 
If you are a fan of Shah Rukh Khan the actor, heave a sigh of relief. If you can’t get enough of enjoying Shah Rukh Khan the star, heave a sigh of relief, too. 
 
With <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Watch-This-honest-FAN-anthem-will-make-every-SRK-fan-miss-the-good-old-days/articleshow/51823116.cms">FAN</a>, SRK has managed to weave together his two personas- that of the ‘actor’ who is the ‘star.’ It's about time. 
 
 
 
And, suddenly halfway through the movie, the whistles, claps and gasps start making sense. 
 <keyword id="112723" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maneesh-Sharma">Maneesh Sharma</keyword> builds an interesting premise with the story of Gaurav Chandna, a simpleton from West Delhi who runs a cyber cafe and proclaims his unconditional love for his hero Aryan Khanna by winning local talent hunts with his Aryan Khan tribute. 
 
All he wants in his life is to meet Aryan, who is more than just a star to him. ‘Woh duniya hai meri,’ he tells his parents and the world. 
 
After haggling his way to Mumbai, Gaurav finds out that things aren’t as rosy as he pictured them to be and ends in an unfortunate meet with his hero that ends in heartbreak and ultimately paves the way for revenge which sees the two fighting across London, Croatia and ultimately, Delhi. 
 
Aryan and Gaurav meet at various times during the length of the movie, but their first meeting in jail blows your mind away with the tone that it sets. This is no happy go lucky story of a fan who goes to any length to meet his star and gets his wish fulfilled; but instead is the dark, gripping and goosebump-inducing tale of an obsessive fan who thinks his hero should be punished for breaking a fan's heart. 
 
As has already been pointed out, the first half of the movie scores over the second (which bears an unusual resemblance to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SHERLOCK&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Sherlock’</a>s Season 2 finale when Moriarty goes about systemically destroying Sherlock’s reputation), but that hardly means that the second half doesn’t have you fixated to your seat (unlike what <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=KRK&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">KRK</a> would like you to believe). 
 
 
 
And, a large part of that credit goes to the two chase sequences. The first, shot in picturesque Dubrovnik highlights the irony of the superstar pursuing the fan, who on the other doesn’t want to be alone his hero, despite the opportunity landing on lap and despite it being the only thing he’s wanted since 25 years. 
 
Tables have turned. 
 
The last chase sequence, which also sets the ground for the climax is to say the least- unforgettable. 
 
It could have ended with an almost happy ending that Bollywood is notorious for but the film’s writer Habib Faisal means business and had other plans. 
 
 
 
Instead, he pens an ending that will shock you, guilt you and leave you conflicted about who to root for- and that in itself tells you enough about the brilliance of this movie. I was rooting for Shah Rukh Khan, the actor and he didn’t disappoint at all. 
 
Khan in and as FAN steals the show with the performance of a lifetime. Though, he plays the of Aryan with ease, it's his performance as the creepy fan Gaurav that hits the right notes, forcing you to remember his anti-hero avatar of the 90s. No song or heroine is needed as he puts up an enjoyable one-man act that is almost perfect. 
 
Habib Faisal’s screenplay is worthy of a lot of awards and Maneesh Sharma doesn’t just direct a movie or just tell a story- he gives us an experience, that will be fondly remembered, time and again. 
 
Do whatever you will, but don’t miss this movie. (and the flashes of the SRK we loved in Darr)

FAN Review: Maneesh Sharma’s gripping, dark thriller returns SRK, the actor to us

Mumbai, "Jawan", a pan-India film that is on a roll with its record-breaking box office collections, treated viewers to not just one but two Shah Rukh Khans on screen. Directed by Tamil filmmaker Atlee, the movie features the superstar in the role of Vikram Rathore and his son Azaad. Critics and audiences are praising the film for being an impressive blend of high-octane stunts and a politically charged narrative with a strong emotional core. Here are seven more films that feature Shah Rukh in dual roles: 1. "Karan Arjun" (1995) - The story revolves around the titular brothers, who are reincarnated years later to avenge their father's murder at the hands of their property-hungry uncle. Also starring Salman Khan in a dual avatar, "Karan Arjun" was directed by Rakesh Roshan. 2. "Duplicate" (1998) - In this movie, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Shah Rukh stars as an aspiring chef Bablu, and Manu, a notorious gangster. The film did not do well at the box office. 3. "Paheli" (2005) - Shah Rukh plays Kishanlal and Prem in the film directed by Amol Palekar. A ghost called Prem takes Kishanlal's place at the latter's house and romances his wife Lachchi (Rani Mukerji) when Kishanlal goes away on a business trip. 4. "Don: The Chase Begins Again" (2006) - An updated version of 1978's "Don", originally starring Amitabh Bachchan, this action film saw Shah Rukh play Vijay, a common man aspiring to make it big in Mumbai. Vijay is sent on a secret mission to impersonate Don after government authorities discover he is a look-alike of the most-wanted international criminal. The actor reprised the titular character in its 2011 sequel "Don 2". 5. "Om Shanti Om" (2007) - Another reincarnation drama, but with an ode to the Hindi cinema of the 1970s and 1980s. Shah Rukh played Om Prakash Makhija, a junior film artist in the '70s era who dreams to become a superstar one day. Om is reincarnated as superstar Om Kapoor, who sets out to avenge the murder of the love of his life, actor Shantipriya. The Farah Khan directorial also marked the Bollywood debut of Deepika Padukone, who also starred in the dual roles of Shantipriya and Sandy. 6. "Ra.One" (2011) - It may have been dubbed as a failure at the box office, but this Anubhav Sinha-directed movie has gained cult status over the years. It starred Shah Rukh as Shekhar Subramanium, a game designer who designs G.One, the game's protagonist, to look like him. 7. "Fan" (2016) - In this experimental Maneesh Sharma film, Shah Rukh stars in the dual role of film star Aryan Khanna and his lookalike obsessive fan Gaurav Chandna.
