The Ministry of <keyword id="6360676" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="railways" source="Orion">Railways</keyword> has increased the speed of 500 <keyword id="5947970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mail-express-trains" source="Orion">Mail Express trains</keyword> through the new time table of the Railways from Monday. Now, these <keyword id="6413405" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="express" source="Orion">express</keyword> trains will reach their destination faster by 10 to 70 minutes. Along with this, Railways has converted 130 services i.e. 65 pairs from Express to Superfast. It is expected that the new time table will improve the punctuality of trains by about 9 percent, due to which about 84 percent of the trains will reach their destinations at the right time. Indian Railways runs about 3240 Mail/Express trains daily which include Vande Bharat Express, Gatimaan Express, Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Humsafar Express, Tejas Express, Duronto Express, Antyodaya Express, Garib Rath Express, Sampark Kranti Express, Yuva Express, Uday Express. Apart from these, about 3000 passenger trains and approximately more than 5600 suburban trains run daily in which about 2.23 crore people travel daily. Apart from these, a large number of goods trains are operated. Constant efforts are made to run these trains in a time-bound manner and make them reach their destinations on time. Every year, attempts are made to increase the speed of trains while making the new time table of trains. During the pandemic, the Railways in collaboration with IIT Mumbai had tried to make a zero based time table. After all these efforts, the new time table has been implemented from 1 October 2022. In this, the average speed of all trains of Railways has been increased by 5 percent. According to the Ministry of Railways, in making the new time table, the Railways has got 5 percent additional lines to run new trains. With this exercise, 5 percent more capacity has been developed on the existing railway line to run new trains. The punctuality in trains in the year 2019-20 was 75 per cent but the same has increased by 9 percent to 84 percent in the year 2022-23. <keyword id="6360676" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railways">Railways</keyword> had a difficult year grappling with mounting revenue shortfall and facing challenge in expenditure and the Kanpur mishap, one of the worst in decades that snuffed out over 150 lives, exposed glaring safety lapses, according to an agency news report. 
 
The year 2016 will also be remembered for government taking a historic decision of doing away with separate Rail Budget, Railways undertaking much-awaited changes in restructuring of its administration aiming at introducing accountability in functioning. 
 On the sunny side, the year saw introduction of new class of services like Mahamanya Express, Gatimaan Express and <keyword id="3260042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Humsafar-Express">Humsafar Express</keyword> redefining passengers travel experience in trains. 
 Owing to less loadings demand and poor growth in passenger bookings in 2016, there was a shortfall of about Rs 14,000 crore in total revenue earnings besides the cross-subsidy in passenger segment touching at Rs 33,000 crore and the <keyword id="35069" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pay-commission">Pay Commission</keyword> commitments staring at Rs 32,000 crore. 
 Acknowledging the difficult market condition that the national transporter witnessed during the year, Railway Minister <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword> said, "2016 was a difficult year. It was a difficult year in terms of freight. Coal, steel, cement, iron ore all the major commodities that Railways handle witnessed less demand." 
 
He further said, "There are perpetual issues, like salary burden of Railways is very high. The costs are pre-determined so we can't do nothing about it. The revenues are dependent on five commodities. So expenditure is a challenge for Railways. We will start addressing these challenges in 2017 more." 
 However, <keyword id="19179" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="prabhu">Prabhu</keyword> said despite challenges, "Railways was ready to handle 1.2 billion of cargo loadings. First time Railways has created such capacity ahead of demand." 
 However, derailment of 14 coaches of <keyword id="3865996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indore-patna-express">Indore-Patna Express</keyword> at <keyword id="453566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pukhrayan">Pukhrayan</keyword> near Kanpur in the early hours of November 21 claiming over 150 lives and injuring more than 200 passengers exposed glaring safety lapses and highlighted the urgent need for a separate safety fund to strengthen and upgrade rail infrastructure. 
 Though <keyword id="2072323" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railway-Safety-Commission">Railway Safety Commission</keyword> is yet to submit the inquiry report, possible rail fracture highlighting poor maintenance of track seem to be reason behind the accident.

As of now, the least time in which you can cover the distance from Mumbai to Delhi via train is nearly 16 hours, taken by the <keyword id="6386498" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajdhani-Express">Rajdhani Express</keyword>. However, thanks to the introduction of the Spanish-manufactured high speed train Talgo, the journey could be completed within 13 hours, in the first week of August. 
 
During the final phase of trials, the nine-coach train will undertake three trips between Mumbai and Delhi between August 1 and 5, departing from New Delhi at 7.55 pm on August 1, maintaining a speed of 130 kmph during the entire journey. 
 
"The Talgo officials have said that at this speed, the distance of 1,384 kms will be covered in 14 hours and 5 minutes. Currently, the Rajdhani Express touches 130 kmph and takes nearly 16 hours to cover the same distance," a WR source told <a href="http://www.mumbaimirror.com/mumbai/others/Mumbai-to-Delhi-in-less-than-13-hrs-on-Talgo-trains/articleshow/53409254.cms">Mumbai Mirror</a>. 
 
While returning to Delhi on August 3, the test drive only gets better. "The train will depart Mumbai at 3 am, and the goal is to reach Delhi by evening. During the last run, on August 5, the train will throughout the journey, which is likely to be completed in 12 hours and 55 minutes," said the WR source. 
 
Talgo has nine coaches, including two executive class compartments, four chair cars, a cafeteria, a power car, and a tail-end coach for equipment. The train did a successful test trial a few days ago on the Mathura-Palwal route, at 180 kmph, covering a distance of 84 km in 38 minutes. 
 
Talgo stands for Tren Articulado Ligero Goicoechea Oriol, meaning light articulated train in Spanish, with Alejandro Goicoechea and Jose Luis Oriol being the company's owners.

Spain-manufactured Talgo trains would take you from Mumbai to Delhi in less than 13 hours

<keyword id="86868" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Railways">Russian Railways</keyword> is helping India's national transporter increase the speed of its passenger trains up to 200 km per hour, according to a news agency reporter. 
 Russian Railways is at present collaborating with Indian Railways on a 575-km stretch between Nagpur and <keyword id="6354398" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Secunderabad">Secunderabad</keyword> and submitted a preliminary report last week. 
 
To reach the desired speed limit, Russian Railways has proposed several technical and technological solutions, including reconstruction of railway alignment as well as treating the earth bed where there are speed restrictions. 
 
Since Indian Railways doesn't have coaches that can move with a speed of 200 km per hour, a new type of passenger cars needs to be approved as well. 
 
It has, however, expressed concern over "a number of large bridges with speed limits" on this particular stretch and has recommended a detailed survey of all these structures on the basis of which measures for reconstruction/repair will be taken up. 
 
It has also been pointed out that railroad switches, which enables trains to shift from one track to another, at stations on this stretch are not suitable for a speed of 200 km per hour and a different type of switch has been recommended. 
 
A digital technological communication network for the entire section, instead of the existing radio communication, was also proposed. 
A high-speed rail network will also require safety measures for pedestrians and motor vehicles at rail crossings. Keeping this in mind, overpasses, anti-collision and anti-ram barriers as well as automatic alarm systems have been suggested. 
 
A protective fencing along the length of the rail track was mooted in order to prevent accidents with people and animals on the track. 
The Russian Railways also suggested noise shields for tracks near residential areas. 
 
A protocol for this project was signed between the railway ministries of the two countries in October last year. 
 
The high-speed project will be jointly financed and the cost will be split equally between the two countries. 
 Currently, the fastest train in India is <keyword id="2554463" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gatimaan-Express">Gatimaan Express</keyword> with top speed of 160 km per hour.
