Ganesh is worshipped before one begins any auspicious work or job and pray to remove the obstacles and pave the way for growth, success, and prosperity. Ganesh Chaturthi is a colorful and joyous festival celebrated enthusiastically by families. This year Ganesh Chaturthi began on Wednesday, 19 September 2023. Celebrations stretch over three to ten days, depending on the region and culminate with <keyword id="422541" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ganesh-visarjan" source="Orion">Ganesh Visarjan</keyword> or the farewell to Lord Ganesh. Depending on their tradition, families perform the Visarjan on one and a half-day, three, five, seven, or eleven days. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is Ganesh Visarjan?" comment="subhead" text="What is Ganesh Visarjan?">What is Ganesh Visarjan?</cmsannotation> For Ganesh Chaturthi puja, people get a new Ganesh idol made of perishable materials like clay, paper pulp, lime paste, or others. These idols are installed at the altar as a mark of inviting Ganesh to the household. Following the puja on Ganesh Chaturthi day, the idol is kept in the puja room/pandal for three or ten days, and finally the family bids farewell to the Lord. This is known as visarjan. As part of the Visarjan, the idol used for the puja is given a grand farewell and immersed in a water body. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The significance of Ganesh Visarjan" comment="subhead" text="The significance of Ganesh Visarjan">The significance of Ganesh Visarjan</cmsannotation> Every puja in Hindu tradition comprises three stages - Avahan (invitation or invocation), puja (worship), and Yathasthan (sendoff). During the invocation, the chief deity of the puja is placed on an elevated platform, and place a Kalash (sacred pot) filled with water, betel leaves, and coconut on top of it. The puja follows as per the tradition and is performed by the family. Yathasthan means giving a sendoff to the deity in a respectful manner after the prayers and thanking the Lord for his blessings. Ganesh Visarjan marks the farewell where the devotees give a sendoff to Lord Ganesh in a grand manner to commemorate the conclusion of the celebrations. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Ganesh Visarjan: Procedure for homes" comment="subhead" text="Ganesh Visarjan: Procedure for homes">Ganesh Visarjan: Procedure for homes</cmsannotation> Depending on the family tradition, Ganesh Visarjan is done on one and half-day or the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, or eleventh day. On the day of Ganesh Visarjan, the family gathers in front of the idol and performs the final puja with flowers, lighting diyas, incense sticks, modaks, ladoos and other eatables prepared for the day. The puja concludes with the waving of camphor flame in front of the idol. The whole family chants prayers. The head of the family then sprinkles turmeric rice (Akshad) on the idol, finally doing a namaskar. The eldest male member of the family touches the idol and gently moves it as a mark of starting the farewell journey. One must offer curd and sweets to Lord Ganesha as they bid him farewell. The family bundles some rice and cereals in a red cloth to accompany him during his voyage back to his abode. The family then chants the shlokas of Ganesh. The designated male member carries the idol and takes the idol around the house for a final round. More members gather for the visarjan and set out to bid farewell to the Lord. Upon reaching the visarjan spot, which is usually a water body like river, lake, pond, or sea, the Ganesh idol is respectfully immersed in the water accompanied by the chanting of Ganesh names and slogans. The devotees pray Lord Ganesh to bless their households and return for the puja next year. This year, given the pandemic, the government has urged all people to use eco-friendly idols and perform the immersion/visarjan at home. If that is not possible at home, then idols should be immersed at nearby artificial ponds, said the government.

Ganesh Chaturthi: How to perform Ganesh Visarjan at home

<keyword id="6361913" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ganesh-Chaturthi">Ganesh Chaturthi</keyword> is a festival celebrated by thousands across India, especially in the state of Maharashtra. And while the celebrations bring joy to many, it unfortunately doesn’t gel too well for our water bodies. 
 Every year, <keyword id="6358070" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> immerses over 1.5 lakh idols (typically made of plaster of paris and chemical paints) in the waters as part of the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, causing water pollution and destroying the fish. 
 
However, this Ganesh Chaturthi, due to the efforts of a Mumbai-based NGO, neither the fish, nor the water-bodies will have to suffer. 
 
After 12 years of cleaning up the beaches post visarjan and urging people to reduce the size of their idols, Sprouts Environment Trust decided to take Eco-Ganesha to the next level and ended up creating idols that the fish can eat. 
 
The idols are thus made of vegetarian fish food, corn, vegetable powder and are coloured with materials such as haldi, kumkum, chandan and other water soluble materials. 
 “These ingredients are not only harmless but are also useful for the fish,” says <keyword id="272187" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Anand-Pendharkar">Anand Pendharkar</keyword>, founder of the NGO <keyword id="3034938" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sprouts-Environmental-Trust">Sprouts Environmental Trust</keyword>. 
 
Priced at Rs 900, the idols took close to six-seven days to make and are nine inches in size. “The idea was to make smaller idols, so that the impact created is lesser. And, unlike the traditional idols, which take years to dissolve, these only take four to five hours,” stated Pendarkar. 
 
However, making them wasn’t as easy as it sounds as most idol makers refused to even entertain the idea of making idols with these materials or paint them with eco-friendly colours. “Finding and convincing idols makers was a tough task. Also, due to the short time we had to make the idols, dry them and then transport them from the artisans to the destination without any damage, we decided to limit our domain only to the Mumbai market,” he ruefully admits. 
 
The popularity of these idols can be guaranteed by the fact that all of their idols have already been sold, apart from the fact that their ad going viral on social networking sites. Admitting that the overwhelming response was beyond their expectations, Pendharkar says, “We knew that our idea was unique and sensitive to the problem at hand, but frankly we never thought that it would be the face of a tsunami of awareness and go viral this quick. We’ve received uncountable calls and messages from all over the world congratulating us on our catchy hashtag (#GodSaveTheOcean) and we can only thank Oglivy and Mather for assisting us in coming up with the same.” 
 
According to Pendharkar, the aim is to get more and more people think of the environment before buying traditional idols made of toxic materials and encourage artisans to make idols in different formats, keeping the environment as a priority.
