FUND MANAGER: At this point, only one thing could tip the US into recession

Investors and analysts expect those higher rates to help banks' bottom lines.</p><p>That dynamic, combined with the potential for mergers-and-acquisitions activity and lower legal expenses, has Wall Street bullish on the prospects for the banking sector as a whole.</p><p>"One sector that might really surprise is the financial institutions," Ram Gandikota, senior portfolio manager and associate director of research at fund manager Ativo Capital, told Business Insider.</p><p>This reflects sentiments from around Wall Street itself, as a number of analysts from larger financial institutions have pointed to the possibility of outperformance in financials in 2016.</p><p>Gandikota, whose firm managed over $1 billion as of October, cited three reasons the banks could outperform.</p><ol><li><strong>A rate hike from the Fed:</strong> "As interest rates go up, that's pretty good news," said Gandikota. "That should help increase earnings and improve [return on investment]." As interest rates go up, banks should be able to improve their net interest margin, or the difference between their cost of funding and lending rates.</li><li><strong>Finishing up fine payouts:</strong> "A lot of banks have had to pay out multi-year fines, and those fines are almost done with," said Gandikota.</li><li><strong>Consolidation: </strong>"Also, you have a smaller number of players within parts of the industry," said Gandikota. "The consolidation in the industry will help make it easier for those still in the space." He points out that it isn't the big mergers and shutdowns anymore, but banks are shuttering individual sections of the business. Gandikota pointed to prop trading and mortgage businesses in particular.</li></ol><p>These reasons, for the most part, coincide with the outlooks from analysts from at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, and Morgan Stanley.</p><p>Morgan Stanley agrees with the basic idea of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rising-interest-rates-are-good-for-bank-profits-2015-12">increased business after a possible Fed rate hike</a>.</p><p>"Higher interest rates in the US - particularly an increase in the Fed funds rate - will have a direct and positive impact on the profitability of the US banks," said the company's analysts in a note to clients. "The broad reason is because the banks will earn more on their assets than they will pay on their liabilities, which in turn, drives higher net interest income and, thus, higher earnings."</p><p>In the note, they estimate that 37 of the 44 US commercial banks in their coverage will see an increase in net interest income after a Fed hike.</p><p>JPMorgan chief global strategist David Kelly also said that interest income would increase. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fed-misunderstood-rate-hikes-effect-on-markets-2015-12">He told Business Insider</a> that there could be an increase of as much as $60 billion in interest coming to banks if the Fed rate were to reach 1%, though that wouldn't all come to Wall Street.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Neil Hall/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">JPMorgan is among those that stand to gain from a rate hike.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Wall Street also agrees with Gandikota about consolidation, through mergers and other investments.</p><p>"M&amp;A will also be a key tool for growing earnings and potentially an avenue for banks to deploy excess capital they are not currently getting full credit for," wrote Richard Ramsden and his team at Goldman Sachs in a note to clients on December 4.</p><h2>Rolling off</h2><p>Wall Street is even anticipating the fines rolling off. "It would not be good for either."</p><p>"He has a plan at 9 a.m. and then by the afternoon that's totally changed," Bekin, whose firm manages around $1.5 billion, said. "Companies need stability from the government and a Trump presidency would not provide that."</p><p>To Bekin, companies need an idea of the future path of policy. It's impossible to adjust if firms don't know what their tax rate is going to be, how much they can import or export, and the like. In turn, when companies are unsure of the future they are usually unwilling to spend on hiring and capital investments.</p><p>Trump has proposed various economic platforms such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-45-tariff-chinese-imports-china-2016-1">a reported 45% tariff on Chinese imports</a>, forcing Apple and other companies to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-donald-trumps-plan-to-build-iphones-in-us-wont-work-2016-3">bring manufacturing back from overseas</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-tax-plan-2015-9">lowering taxes on many corporations.</a></p><p>Bekin said that investors don't appear to be worried, but they should be.</p><p>"It seems that markets are discounting the actual possibility that [a Trump presidency] is going to happen," Bekin said. "It seems like they expect him to implode and lose whatever support he has left. I think the markets should be very concerned, however, it would be terrible."</p><p>Bekin said that at first, Trump was attractive to businesses but that faded.</p><p>"I think we went through a phase where everyone was impressed by his pro-business views," said Bekin. "Tax reform, more favorable trade deals, it all looked good. Jagan Mohan Reddy has cleared pump storage projects proposed by <keyword id="3179546" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Adani-green-energy" source="Orion">Adani Green Energy</keyword> with a total capacity of 3,700 MW. The project was cleared in the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) review meeting on Wednesday.<br /><br />Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has cleared the proposal of investment of Rs 15,740 crore which is a part of the proposed total investment of Rs 60,000 crore by <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> Group in the state of Andhra Pradesh that was discussed during the World Economic Forum meet at Davos recently.<br /><br />The project will generate 10,000 jobs across four districts of Andhra Pradesh.<br /><br />Adani Group has proposed pump storage projects in four districts of the state - two plants to be set up in Parvathi Puram, one in YSR Kadapa, and one in Satya Sai district. In Parvathi Puram, a 1200 MW capacity plant will be set up in Kurukutti, and a 1000 MW plant in Karrivalasa.<br /><br />Meanwhile, a 1000 MW plant will be set up in Gandikota while 500 MW plant in Chitravathi. In each of these districts, Adani Group has proposed that they will be generating 3,000 jobs in Kurukutti, 3000 in Karrivalasa, 1500 in Chitravathi and 2500 in Gandikota.<br /><br />The project is stipulated to commence in December 2022 and is likely to commission in December 2028. While the plants will be set up spanning across 1,490 acres of land, the state government has decided that the land will be leased from farmers at the cost of Rs 30,000 per acre in these districts, which will be transferred to the farmers directly.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the state will be generating a revenue of Rs 2,775 crore from the project in terms of the power stored and an additional Rs 980 crore from the SGST.<br /><br />"This will give a big boost to the state in terms of investment and a positive message as the employment rate continues to rise in the state," Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said in the meeting.<br /><br />In other decisions taken in the SIPB meeting, the government has decided to apply for the PM MITRA scheme, which proposes to set up an integrated textile park in YSR Jagananna Mega Industrial Hub at Kopparthy in YSR District. The government, as per the conditions laid down under the scheme, has proposed that they would be fixing the power cost at Rs 4.5 per unit and Rs 60 per TMC of water for the 10-year period of the project.<br /><br />The SIPB has also cleared the setting up of a shrimp processing unit at the food park in Krishna district by Avisa Foods Private Limited. The project would generate 2,500 jobs in 12 months and the company has requested for 11.64 acres of land from the state government of Andhra Pradesh. The SIPB has decided to lease the 11.64 acres at the cost of Rs 1,027 per sqm. The government has also laid out condition that the effluent treatment plant (ETP) would be set up by the company.

On the other hand, analysts have also observed that if you <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chadha-earnings-growth-adjusted-for-oil-dollar-fairly-strong-2015-10">strip out drags</a> from a stronger dollar and low oil prices, earnings have increased.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Deutsche Bank</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>'Dismal consensus'</h2><p><span>Michael Binger, a <span>senior portfolio manager at Minnesota-based Gradient Investments, noted that a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-profit-margin-decline-signals-recession-2015-10">disproportional amount of the S&amp;P 500 earnings are energy companies</a>.</span></span></p><p><span>This may lead investors to focus on companies that have more to do with the broader economy rather than energy numbers, which are expected to be terrible. </span><span>Additionally, Binger thinks that earnings don't have to do that much to boost the market anyway.</span></p><p><span>"[Corporate earnings] just need to be a little better than the dismal consensus and that would most likely spark a rally," Binger told Business Insider.</span></p><p><span>And it's not just for this round of earnings. Going forward into 2016, Liu thinks reports from companies will steadily improve and help bolster the market all year. </span><span>"This idea of a earnings recession is a 2015 story," said Liu. </span></p><p><span>"For 2016 it's really looking like it's going to be better. We're talking about 7% to 10% earnings growth from the S&amp;P [500 companies], and if you take out energy, as much as 12%."</span></p><p><span>Bullish sentiment does, in part, rely on earnings beats from companies, which aren't always a given. Oftentimes, however, solid earnings are a self-fulfilling prophecy. </span></p><p><span>Based on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/earnings-season-hasnt-been-this-disappointing-in-a-decade-2015-8">data from Societe Generale</a>, earnings over the past ten years typically beat expectations to the upside by 40%-50% while missing on the downside by around 15%-20%.
