A powerful explosion, triggered by Maoists in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli has claimed the life of 15 security personnel and their driver. According to preliminary reports, an IED (improvised explosive device) was set off on a police vehicle. Around 3:30 am on Tuesday, Maoists torched 25 vehicles, using petrol and diesel in Kurkheda, Gadchiroli. PM Narendra Modi condemned the incident, calling it despicable.  Gadchiroli is a Maoist-affected district that borders Chhattisgarh. The district recently voted in the first phase of India’s general elections on April 11. The same day, Maoists have set off another IED blast in Gadchiroli on April 11. However, no one was injured in the event. On April 10, a CRPF soldier was injured in an IED blast in Gadchiroli. Home Minister Rajnath Singh also took to Twitter to condemn the attacks.

 Maharashtra DGP Subodh Jaiswal has said that the investigation is underway. According to the initial reports, the bus carrying 15 commandos was en route to the attack site where the Maoists had set ablaze 27 vehicles. The commando bus was targeted by the Maoists that killed all the 15 commandos and the driver. In April 2018, security forces carried one of the biggest anti-Maoist operations in Maharashtra, eliminating over 40 rebels. On a day when Maharashtra celebrates its statehood, the incident has raised alarms over security arrangements in sensitive areas of the state.

They want to bring these remote areas into the digital era and have already initiated such activities in Chhattisgarh, Injiram and Sukma. In July, it had also launched the first mobile phone tower in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. It also enabled internet facilities, and provided computers to students--a move which was well appreciated by its residents. “Padhega Bastar, tabhi toh badhega Bastar (Education in Bastar will lead to development),” Moses Dhinakaran, Directorate General of CRPF tweeted. The Bastar district in Chhattisgarh is prone to Maoist activities.

It recently provided smart TVs and DTH connections to a girls hostel in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. The CRPF has deployed over <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/jul/21/in-a-first-crpf-to-install-sanitary-pad-dispensers-for-women-in-combat-2007290.html">300,000 personnel</a>, including several employed in conflicted or naxal areas of the country such as Bastar and Jammu and Kashmir.

The plan to conduct re-examination comes after the Bombay High Court allowed students residing in flood-hit parts of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region to apply for re-examination. A division Nagpur bench of Justices Ravi Deshpande and Pushpa Ganediwala said the National Testing Agency (NTA) shall consider such applications and decide accordingly, after checking the veracity of the same, within 15 days. The court further said any aggrieved student can file an application to the NTA via their centre coordinator. "The situation is grim in several districts due to floods. Students should not suffer for no fault on their part, the bench said. The NTA will come to a decision after consulting with the concerned district collector. The engineering Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Main began at 9 am across the country on September 1 despite massive protests across the country. Earlier, the high court on August 31 took cognisance of a letter written to it by Nitesh Bawankar, a resident of Maharashtra's Bhandara district, raising concern over how students will reach the exam centres to appear for the JEE amid the flood situation. Bawankar sought postponement of the exam for students residing in the flood-hit parts of Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts. Due to floods, students from these areas will find it difficult to appear for the JEE-Main examination, he said. On September 1, Gadchiroli collector told HC that due to heavy rains and flood, inter-district transport is affected and the situation may remain unchanged for a few more days. In such a condition, the NTA would be the appropriate authority to decide the issue of postponing the exam for students affected by flood, the collector said. The Nagpur collector told the court that 1,284 students were to attend the exam in six centres of the district and that there is no flood-like situation there. Akola collector also told the court that as there is no flood-like situation in the district, there would be no hurdle in conducting the exam there. A similar submission was made by Amravati collector. Chandrapur collector told the court that 21 villages were affected by flood in the district and rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) enquired at local levels if there were any students who needed to appear for the JEE-Main exam, but no response was received. He also said there are four examination centres at the Chandrapur district headquarters, which are not affected by flood and hence, are accessible by road. Collectors of Bhandara and Gondia told the court that while their districts are worst hit due to heavy rains and release of water from the Sanjay Sarovar dam in Madhya Pradesh, there are no centres for JEE-Main examination in both these districts. They submitted that candidates appearing for the examination shall have road accessibility to Nagpur and will not face any problem in appearing for the exam. The court on Monday directed the Centre, Maharashtra government, NTA and collectors of these districts to consider postponing the JEE-Main exam for students who are residing in the flood-affected areas and are unable to reach the centres to appear for the exam.
