<keyword id="6407374" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sholay">Sholay</keyword> (1975) is amongst the greatest movies in over 100 years’ history of Indian cinema, and has earned numerous accolades. While most of us remember all its characters by heart, it’s Gabbar who still rules over millions heart. 
 The character of Gabbar, played by <keyword id="144591" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amjad-Khan">Amjad Khan</keyword>, contributed immensely to the success of this blockbuster movie. Even after four decades, people remember his iconic dialogues such as "Kitne aadmi the", "Ab tera kya hoga Kalia?”, “Jo dar gaya, samjho mar gaya", etc. In 2013, Filmfare named Gabbar Singh the most iconic villain in the history of Indian cinema. 
 To cash on the popularity of Gabbar Singh, few movies have used his name for hero’s character. In Telugu film - Gabbar Singh (2012), the male lead, who played a role of apolice cop, renamed himself as Gabbar. This movie became one of the highest grossing Telugu movies. In Hindi movie - <keyword id="2760691" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gabbar-Is-Back">Gabbar is Back</keyword> (2015), the hero of the film, who was man against corruption, renamed himself as Gabbar. This movie also did amazingly well at the Box Office. During the end of this flick, Gabbar kidnaps Digvijay Patil and both the characters quarrel to prove their brand power and eventually, Gabbar proves and says, “Gabbar is a bigger brand than you”. 
 
Many marketing books teach about importance of marketing of companies and their products, but Gabbar’s example teaches about marketing your most important asset all by yourself. Besides, it also tells you how to create your own personal brand in a super crowded market.

Passion: Gabbar was a dacoit, but people love his character because he played the role of dacoit with passion, which was reflected in his dialogues, actions and strategies and made this role unforgettable. 
 
Preparation: Amjad Khan was almost dropped from the project because <keyword id="10355" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Javed-Akhtar">Javed Akhtar</keyword> found his voice too weak for Gabbar Singh's role. But, Amjad Khan made Gabbar one of the most popular characters. In preparation for the role, Amjad read Abhishapth Chambal, a book on Chambal dacoits written by Taroon Kumar Bhaduri (actress <keyword id="496768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaya-Bhaduri">Jaya Bhaduri</keyword>'s father). 
 
Reputation: Gabbar had a very strong reputation in his profession. The authorities declared a big reward of Rs 50,000 for getting him arrested. He made sure that his team and audience know his reputation; he asks one of his team members - “Arre o Samba, kitna inaam rakhe hai sarkar ham par?” 
 
Leadership: Gabbar led a group of dacoits, and kept them inspired and loyal towards him, but when needed he even punish them. 
 
Visibility: Gabbar used to regularly send his dacoits to Ramgarh (market) to keep an eye on villagers (target audience), maintain his terror (positioning) &amp; watch any upcoming competition. When his dacoits came back without getting anything from villagers (zero business), he measured his competition by asking "Kitne aadmi the". 
 
Communication: Gabbar was a strong communicator. His voice modulation, emotional touch, eye contact, dialogues (content) and delivery style (body language) fascinated audience. 
 
Association: If Gabbar would have been alone, he would not have been very powerful, he associated himself with likeminded people (dacoits) and became leader of his association. And this gave him network, credibility and power. 
 
Remembrance: Gabbar made sure that people remember him and use his brand for creating fear. He used to say, “yaha se pachas pachas kos door gaon me jab bachcha raat ko rota hai to maa kahti hai beta soja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jaayega”. Endorsement: Gabbar Singh was the first villain character used by a company to publicize its products. He endorsed Britannia Glucose Biscuits, the advertisement was an instant hit in children and the sales almost doubled. 
 
Opportunistic: To attack his competitors when they are not prepared to face his attack, Gabbar asks his team “Holi kab hai, kab hai holi?” and plans to attack Ramgarh during Holi celebration. 
 
People perceive that brands are different and better than commodities. When they buy any product or service, they pay higher prices for the products or services from known and reputed brands than for the products or services from unknown brands, and commodities serving the same requirement. 
 
In Sholay, there were many other non-branded dacoits (except Samba and Kalia because their names were mentioned by Gabbar in popular dialogues), and it is difficult to differentiate them from one another because they all seem to serve the same need, solve the same problem, and deliver the same value for Gabbar. In today’s highly competitive and super crowded world, individual’s personal brand is his most important asset and he can achieve his dreams by trying to become his field’s Gabbar.

The engrossing campaign by the startup founded by 3 alumni from IIT, Mumbai have a record of being in news for all wrong reasons. Believe it or not, the company has spent around Rs 120 crore , much above it’s estimate just to promote its logo, which is apparently inspired from an <keyword id="75489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IOS">iOs</keyword> app. Adding to it this time is it’s <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> <keyword id="536283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Yadav">Rahul Yadav</keyword>’s resignation from the board. A nasty email he wrote to his colleagues was accessed by the media and all the hell broke loose. 
 
In his resignation, Rahul has written: 
 
Dear board members and investors, I don't think you guys are intellectually capable enough to have any sensible discussion anymore. This is something which I not just believe but can prove on your faces also! 
 
I had calculated long back (by taking avg life expectancy minus avg sleeping hrs) that I only have ~3L (hours) in my life. ~3L hrs are certainly not much to waste with you guys!

And as the letter became viral, social media exploded with sarcasm, criticism and of course choicest abuses against Yadav. 
 
A twitteratti, @GabbarSingh known for mean tweets reacted steadily saying, “IIT brat Housing dot com CEO's resignation letter. And you ask why don't we have an Elon musk.” 
 This was followed by a series of reactions with someone replying, “The only 'innovation' I saw was to plaster the city with his ads. No patents. No <keyword id="6414070" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="iron-man">Iron man</keyword> suit. Pshaw!” Someone took this occasion to criticize the app saying, “To be fair, the app was disruptive in its micro-innovations. That it's run by juveniles is another story.” Keeping the fun alive, <keyword id="202428" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gabbar">Gabbar</keyword> himself replied, “his ego is writing cheques which his product cant encash. Build a fuckin suit.” 
 Yet, this isn’t the first time Yadav has proved how foul mouthed badass he is. Earlier when <keyword id="270604" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sequoia">Sequoia</keyword>, a <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> fund declined to <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> on Housing and instead pumped money in Grabhouse, a rival of Housing, Yadav had sent a nasty email to Shailendra, the MD of the venture capital firm, saying: 
 
“You clearly know what shit you’ve done with multiple entrepreneuers and startups in India with your cheap and dirty tactics.” 
 
The letter ends with Rahul signing off “Go die motherf*****” 
 
And when the hurly-burly is done, the news report in the ET reads, the Housing board consisted of three directors " Yadav, Sharma and Arora. On Tuesday, sources told the ET that the first item on the board's agenda will be the appointment of two new directors "Ritesh Banglani of Helion and Sujan of Nexus " and formalising the appointment of Bullock in place of Arora.

When you think of a dacoit, what comes to your mind? Chambal, Gabbar…perhaps Phoolan Devi? With multiple YouTube Shorts and long-form videos, views on some of his videos are close to one lakh. To top it off, he also gives shoutouts to his dacoit friends’ Youtube channels! When the government announced a bounty of PKR 10 million on the heads of various hardened robbers, including him, he called the official hotline to contest the reward placed on his own head. Like any ‘viral dacoit’, he posted a video of himself making the call to the Punjab Home Department. Alongside questioning the authenticity of the list that included his name, he criticised the bounty system and argued why such large sums of money were not used to help the poor! <div type="image" title="Shahid Lund Baloch&amp;#39;s YouTube video" msid="113586065" hostid="261"></div>He doesn't like being called a daku though. In a video titled “hum daku nahi” (we are not dacoits), he explains how he comes from a lineage of respectable people, and feels sad when people call him a daku. All this, with an AK 47 on his arm. His views are socialist, and his wants, basic — he claims that he just wants safety for the people of his tribe and access to basic amenities, like schools. Despite the preaching of ideal socialist views on YouTube, his actions in no way match that of a virtuous social media sensation. This dacoit-cum-YouTuber is one of the people wanted for a series of severe crimes including the recent murder of 11 police officers. The rise of dacoit gangs in <keyword id="19899252" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan" source="keywords">Pakistan</keyword> can be traced back to the time between 1984 and 1994, the first-half of which coincides with Zia-ul-Haq’s military rule. These criminal groups, like the ones in Katcha, are known for smuggling, gun-running, kidnapping, and highway robberies. In a surprising twist, modernisation has led them to use social media to expand their influence and gain support, something rare among people involved in criminal activities. But the bigger picture shows a deeper issue — the state's failure to support its marginalised communities, driving some toward crime as a means of survival. It also remains a mystery why the authorities are not able to track and capture such criminals despite the growing use of social media platforms among them.

He has also acted in films such as Akshay Kumar's "Gabbar is Back" and a Marathi film titled "Mogra Phulaalaa".Before he made his acting debut in 2015 with Zee TV's "Kumkum Bhagya", he was practising medicine in Maharashtra's Konkan region.Five years ago, Gokhale shifted base to Mumbai where he started acting in both films and on TV, while straddling a job at a private hospital in suburban Juhu."Before lockdown I would go for shoots during day time and in the night I come to a multi-speciality hospital. I last shot for a TV show on March 14. I miss being on sets, the moment between 'roll camera and action' was magical."But I am in the role of Dr Ashish now. I don't have to take effort to be in this role. I have learnt it for five-and-half years and done practice too. Because of the coronavirus, I am into this 24x7. I want to save people. It is 15th of August in 1975; Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay has found its way into the theatres. While the country men have switched on the patriotic mode in them, Bollywood was preparing to redefine the arena of Indian commercial cinema like never before. A film that defines patriotism in a newer way, thrills with its suspense even if you watch it for the zillionth time and shows how a friendship in India thrives has come a long way and it’s now a part of every Indian’s growing-up discourse. 
This Independence Day marks the 40th anniversary of Sholay. Anupama Chopra, the renowned film critic has said in her book ‘Sholay- The Making of a classic’ (Penguin India), “Over the years, Sholay, has transcended its hit-movie status. It is not merely a film, it is the ultimate classic; it is myth.”

1. Sholay is a record breaker in many ways. It is also India’s first 70 mm film, which had stereophonic sound. 
 
2. Amjad Khan’s ‘Kitney aadmi the’ dialogue has become a cult. Yet, Khan was almost rejected because the casting director found that his voice was not ‘powerful enough’. 
 
3. Many things about this movie were real even the bullets in the climax scene. It is said that one spare bullet had nearly missed Amitabh. 
 
4. Gabbar’s gang member Sambha was played by Mac Mohan. Though he has become an indispensible part of the movie, he just has one dialogue in Sholay. 
 
5. Amzad Khan wasn’t the first choice for the role of Gabbar. It was Danny Denzongpa who was supposed to play the role. 
 
6. What DDLJ is to Maratha Mandir, Minerva Theatre of Mumbai is for Sholay. This theatre screened Sholay for 5 years continuously in all three shows of the day. And till 1980, it was a major hit. 
 
7. Sholay has proved this long back that awards don’t determine a movie’s credibility. Though a blockbuster, Sholay had won just one Filmfare award, that too for editing. 
 
8. The movie, after the initial part, is all about Gabbar and his notorious activities. However, in a 204 minute film, Gabbar appears in just 9 scenes. 
 
9. While the official release date was 15th August 1975, the movie was launched on 2nd October in 1973. 
 
10. Estimated at Rs 2 crores, Sholay’s budget over ran to an extra one crore. It took almost two and a half years to complete the movie. 
 
11. Previously, scriptwriters weren’t really paid in Bollywood. Sholay changed everything. It set the scripwriters as real creator of hit movies. 
 
12. Getting requisite permissions had prevented Thakur Saab from being an army officer. The character of Thaakur saab was conceived as a retired army officer. Having not got necessary clearances from the army, the role was changed to a police officer. 
 
13. The role of Jai played by Amitabh Bachchan was initially planned for Shatrughan Sinha. 
 
14. Dharmendra was nursing a deep crush on Hema Malini during the shooting of the film. He wanted to play the role of Thakur initially, but settled for playing Veeru when he realized that the character would be paired against Hema Malini. 
 
 
15. The light boys were bribed by Dharmendra to spoil his scenes with Hema Malini. This led to numerous retakes and Dharmendra’s chance of getting closer to Hema intensified. 
 
16. The original ending of Sholay has Gabbar being killed by Thakur. 
 
 
17. The Censor Board didn’t approve of too much violence in the end. Sholay was made to re-shoot several scenes to get rid of extreme violence. 
 
18. Ramgarh , the village shown in Sholay is actually a town called Ramanagara, which is 50 kms from Bangalore. Since 80s, it came to be called Ramgarh to commemorate the film.

Social media is replete with listicles curated to trigger nostalgia by evoking past pop culture fads. But consider how any content that sparked such a trend on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram first began as a single post on one profile before going viral. Recent marketing has effectively capitalised on the nostalgia enabled by such platforms. <a href="https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/examples-nostalgia-marketing-ads">In 2016</a>, the much-adored painter Bob Ross, best known for the 1980s US television series The Joy of Painting, experienced a resurgent popularity, two decades following his death, after the classic show was picked up by Netflix. He soon became a trending topic on Instagram and drew the attention of Adobe, which released a series of tutorial videos to promote their Adobe Photoshop Sketch that paid homage to the late artist. Modern technology has reduced the spontaneity that once characterised nostalgia. <a href="https://www.smartinsights.com/social-media-marketing/social-media-strategy/new-global-social-media-research/">There are currently</a> over four billion people with Internet access, more than five billion mobile phone owners, and above three billion social media users across the world. Ironically, rising technological adoption and disruption is inspiring and aiding a retreat towards simpler times. Since memories can now be triggered at the tap of a screen, nostalgia is more accessible than ever before. A powerful emotion, it is a perennial marketing tool. Nostalgia marketing: The future is here

Former dacoits, whose hideouts were forests where they also set up many houses, have now taken up a noble cause. 
 
These self confessed ‘baghis’, who laid down their arms years back, will now converge in Jaipur to give a lesson on saving environment and the forests. 
 
Seema Parihar, Gabbar Singh, Mohar Singh, Saru Singh, Malkhan Singh, Renu Yadav and Sarla Yadav, who once made headlines for their gunshots will gather in the pink city in mid-July to take part in a 'mahakumbh' of former dacoits and their families. 
 
The 'mahakumbh' will be named 'Pehle basaya bihad - Ab bachayainge bihad' (Once we lived in forests - Now we will save forests).These dacoits, who had given a slip to the police many times in the 1970s and 1980s in the border areas of MP, Rajasthan and UP, now lead a normal life. 
 
“I went to Muraina, Bhind, Jhansi, Auraiya and other places in MP, UP and some places in Rajasthan to find these dacoits who once ruled the ravines of Chambal," Vishnu Lamba, an environment activist, told Times of India. "I met at least 22 dacoits till date and seven of them have already given their consent to take part in the programme. They include Seema Parihar, Malkhan Singh and Mohar Singh," Lamba of Shree Kalpatru Sansthan added. 
 
He told the news daily that the dacoits who will take part in the 'mahakumbh' are those who took up arms for a 'cause' and not for their own benefits. The programme is being organized with an aim to spread environmental awareness. Many of these dacoits have become social workers after they surrendered to the police. Some of them have also joined politics. 
 
The dacoits will also narrate their own stories along with spreading the message of environment conservation.

A few days back, we told you about the release of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-motion-poster-of-Ki-Ka-is-here/articleshow/50534086.cms">motion poster</a> of R. Balki’s upcoming movie <keyword id="3018653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ki-Ka">Ki &amp; Ka</keyword>, starring <keyword id="2165" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor">Kareena Kapoor</keyword> Khan and <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword> in the lead roles. The poster showed Kareena tying a mangalsutra around Arjun Kapoor’s neck, while the tagline said that streeling (female) and pulling (male) is the same thing. 
 
It pretty much gave us the idea that Arjun, who plays Kabir would be a house husband while Kareena, who plays Kia, would be the one minting money in the big bad world out there. Now, the official trailer of the movie is here, and we couldn’t be more correct about the storyline of the movie. 
 
The trailer starts with someone asking Kabir if Kia is the man in their relationship, to which he says that even though in the Indian culture, a man means someone who earns the bread of the family, in their case, it’s just the opposite. 
 
The scene then moves to Kia, who is the marketing manager of a big corporate house, and is expecting quick promotions in the near future. When Ki and Ka talk about their future, Ka, i.e Kabir reveals that he wants to be like his mom, who, to Ki, i.e Kia’s surprise was a housewife. 
Kabir then clarifies that he is a normal man, who just wants to stay away from the rat race in his professional career. 
 
We also meet Swaroop Sampat and Rajit Kapur, who play Kia and Kabir’s family. As the two get married, the famous mangalsutra scene arrives, along with some steamy scenes between the two stars. 
 That Kabir likes to cook is evident from the trailer, as he makes tea, breakfast and dinner for his working wife, while asking money from her to manage the house. However, he can beat some goons in pure macho style too, a stereotypical must for a <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> hero after all, but in the next scene, he wears red sandals as Kareena plays the lead in their couple dance. 
 
Good, different and fun, but even the movie that talks about breaking the stereotypes somehow manages to establish them again, in a role reversal manner though. 
 
Why does Kabir take off his wife’s sandals as she is too tired to take them off herself after a hectic day at work? Why is he the one who makes the breakfast as she sleeps soundly? Why doesn’t she care about his headache when she is in the mood to do it? 
 
These questions make us think if Balki meant to just reverse the roles amongst genders and not show gender equality through this movie, which could have been path breaking, but sadly, isn’t? 
 
Nonetheless, the chemistry between Kareena and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Watch-Varun-Dhawan-and-Arjun-Kapoors-real-introductory-film/articleshow/47526025.cms">Arjun</a> looks sizzling, and it’s after quite some time that Kareena would be seen delivering a performance and not just being in the movie for the sake of glamour. Remember <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Box-Office-Singham-Returns-Manages-A-Smashing-Weekend/articleshow/40367987.cms">Singham Returns</a>, Gabbar Is Back and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Just-Three-More-Days-For-The-Trailer-Of-Bajrangi-Bhaijaan/articleshow/47676499.cms">Bajrangi Bhaijaan</a>, anyone? Even though the first trailer didn’t give us any glimpse of the role that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jaya-and-Amitabh-Bachchan-shoot-for-Ki-and-Ka-inside-Jalsa/articleshow/48512138.cms">Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan</a> would be playing in the movie, it does manage to raise the curiosity levels to some extent.

Ki & Ka official trailer out; is Balki redefining gender roles or just switching them?

June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.
