While the rise of <keyword id="19899640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="keywords">AI</keyword> has delivered numerous benefits and potential advantages, it has also introduced some challenges, such as the emergence of deepfakes. These are synthetic media that use AI to manipulate or superimpose existing video, audio or images to produce hyper-realistic but fabricated content, presenting significant concerns around misinformation and deception. But what if we turned the tide on AI-driven misinformation by deploying the same AI technologies that are revolutionising our world? What if we use <keyword id="19918826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ChatGPT" source="keywords">ChatGPT</keyword> to actually spot <keyword id="7065261" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="deepfake" source="Orion">deepfake</keyword> images? A research team led by the University at Buffalo has applied <keyword id="13985511" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="large-language-models" source="Orion">large language models</keyword> (LLMs) to the task of spotting deepfakes of human faces. Their study revealed that although LLMs currently lag behind state-of-the-art <keyword id="22209857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepfake-detection" source="keywords">deepfake detection</keyword> algorithms in performance, their natural language processing capabilities could make them a more practical detection tool in the future. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="ChatGPT's unexpected talent for spotting deepfakes with semantic savvy" comment="subhead" text="ChatGPT's unexpected talent for spotting deepfakes with semantic savvy">ChatGPT's unexpected talent for spotting deepfakes with semantic savvy</cmsannotation> Trained on an expansive dataset comprising roughly 300 billion words from the internet, ChatGPT identifies statistical patterns and relationships between words to craft its responses. The latest iterations of ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) have also expanded their capabilities to include image analysis. These multimodal LLMs leverage extensive databases of captioned images to decipher the connections between words and visuals. The Media Forensics Lab team embarked on an experiment to see if GPT-4 with vision (<keyword id="18999512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GPT-4V" source="Orion">GPT-4V</keyword>) and Gemini 1.0 could differentiate between real human faces and those generated by AI. They tested these models with thousands of images, both authentic and deepfake, asking them to spot any signs of manipulation or synthetic artefacts. In their findings, ChatGPT achieved an accuracy rate of 79.5% in detecting synthetic artefacts in images produced by latent diffusion, and 77.2% accuracy on StyleGAN-generated images. This performance is on par with earlier deepfake detection methods, indicating that with the right prompts, ChatGPT can reasonably identify AI-generated images. A key advantage of ChatGPT is its ability to articulate its reasoning in clear language. For instance, when analysing an AI-generated photo of a man wearing glasses, ChatGPT accurately noted. “the hair on the left side of the image slightly blurs” and “the transition between the person and the background is a bit abrupt and lacks depth”. In contrast, existing deepfake detection models typically provide the likelihood of an image being real or fake without explaining the rationale behind their conclusions. Even when examining the model’s underlying mechanisms, some features remain beyond our comprehension. This distinction arises from ChatGPT’s reliance solely on semantic knowledge. Traditional deepfake detection algorithms are trained on extensive datasets of labelled images to discern real from fake. However, LLMs utilise their natural language capabilities to develop a sort of common-sense understanding of reality—including typical facial symmetry and the authentic look of photographs. Overall, the study concluded that ChatGPT's blend of semantic knowledge and natural language processing offers a more user-friendly tool for deepfake detection for both developers and end users. With that said, there’s still a massive room for improvement. ChatGPT’s performance lags behind the latest deepfake detection algorithms, which boast accuracy rates in the mid- to high-90s. This shortfall is partly because LLMs miss signal-level statistical differences, which are often imperceptible to the human eye, but detectable by specialised algorithms for identifying AI-generated images. It will also launch Gemini Ultra to a new version of Bard called Bard Advanced next year. Sissie Hsiao, Google's VP and general manager of Bard and Assistant, wouldn't say if Bard Advanced will cost money to use but didn't deny it was a possibility.There's immense pressure on Google right now to prove it's still an AI industry leader with Gemini, which was trained to be multimodal, meaning it can process different types of media such as text, pictures, video, and audio. But Google boasts that Gemini is its "most flexible" model too, capable of running on a range of sources from data centers to smartphones.In a roundtable with reporters this week, Google executives said the Ultra model of Gemini is the first model to outperform human experts on MMLU (massive multitask language understanding), a measurement that tests on subjects such as math, history, law, and ethics. The model scored 90.0%, beating OpenAI's GPT-4's 86.4%That all sounds great, but we won't be able to test the full capabilities of Gemini just yet. Google says the Pro model outperformed GPT-3.5, which powers the free version of ChatGPT, and users will be able to test a fine-tuned version for Bard starting Wednesday (only in English to start, Google says, and not in the UK). But when asked how Gemini compares to GPT-4 overall, executives declined to comment (it did, however, benchmark Gemini Ultra against GPT-4 across a range of different areas <a target="_blank" href="https://blog.google/technology/ai/google-gemini-ai/#performance">and published the results here).</a>Publicly, Google has swatted away suggestions it's been scrambling to chase the competition, but things have looked very different inside the company as it has raced to get Gemini out the door and infuse AI into all of its key products.Earlier this year, CEO Sundar Pichai <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ai-deepmind-org-chart-2023-7">merged Alphabet's prized DeepMind unit with its internal AI group, Brain</a>, to quicken work on Gemini. Google said Gemini was able to distinguish between papers that were relevant to the study and those that weren't. More interestingly, they were able to show Gemini a graph with old data and have it produce an updated version, with the new data plotted.While Gemini can process different media types, Eli Collins, VP of product for DeepMind, said the initial Gemini models won't be able to generate images and videos, but suggested this was something that would come down the line in other models.Collins added that Google has seen some "novel" capabilities in Gemini that could give it an edge over rival models, but would not elaborate on what those might be.Gemini has been trained on and is powered by tensor processing units (TPUs), and Google is using Gemini's rollout to announce its new Cloud TPU v5p and a new AI hypercomputer that will be used to improve AI training and delivery. Amazon is quietly developing cancer vaccines. If successful, the new vaccine would offer a more personalized, precise treatment for breast and skin cancers, and at a more affordable price. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-is-developing-cancer-vaccines-with-fred-hutchinson-2022-7">Here's what we know so far.</a>4. More layoffs are underway. Live events startup Hopin, valued at $7.8 billion, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-events-unicorn-startup-hopin-is-laying-off-tk-staff-2022-7">is laying off 29% of staff</a>. Oracle Advertising <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-advertising-laid-off-staff-rsu-compensation-losses-2022-7">laid off about 60 employees</a>, causing some to lose out on restricted stock units that were about to vest. Finally, Rivian reportedly <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/11/23204199/rivian-electric-vehicles-layoffs-planned-manufacturing">laid off about 5% of its staff</a>.5. Facebook's engineering head told managers to find low performers so they can be let go. A leaked memo viewed by Insider shows that managers at the company must identify employees who are "failing this company." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-engineering-head-tells-managers-to-find-underperformers-2022-7">Everything we learned from the leaked memo.</a>6. The Supreme Court made it harder to conduct research that would protect women's health. Researchers say accurate, verifiable data about abortions will now be harder to come by — meaning we won't know how the court's decision to overturn Roe v. Twitter's lawyers call Elon Musk's deal termination "invalid and wrongful." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-response-elon-musk-terminating-deal-2022-7">In a letter to Musk's attorneys</a>, Twitter's lawyers said Musk "knowingly, intentionally, willfully, and materially breached the Agreement." Amid the chaos, Twitter has seen such an increase in attrition that the company has created a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-sees-more-workers-leave-musk-takeover-starts-layoffs-2022-7">new way to keep track of all the exits</a>. 8. Meanwhile, Elon Musk is back to meme-ing after abandoning the Twitter deal.
