I along with the team of leading GOQii Coaches will be working to making 1.3 billion Indians healthy,” said Akshay Kumar. The actor will also be a GOQii coach conducting live video sessions on GOQii Play. GoQii, which is founded by <keyword id="211471" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishal-Gondal">Vishal Gondal</keyword> in 2014, recently started a legal battle against <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> for deep discounting of its products. With the investment, Kumar will also host the India Health Quiz on GoQii’s OTT platform GoQii Play. Gondal, who used to run a gaming company Indiagames, came up with the idea of GoQii when he stopped exercising during his stint at the gaming company, and gained a lot of weight. “I tried everything and the only thing that worked was a coach in my neighbourhood who remotely coached me. I ended up running marathons, went to Everest Base camp ,” Gondal had told Business Insider during an interview. He realised back then that people didn’t lack access to gyms but instead lacked motivation to work out. Today, GoQii has marquee investors like Ratan Tata, Vijay Shekhar Sharma Mitsui, DSG Consumer Partners among others on its board. For Gondal, it has been a great journey from being called crazy for starting a hardware startup with a subscription model to today being one of the market leaders along with Xiaomi in the affordable <keyword id="18974" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fitness">fitness</keyword> wearable space. “Another big thing we were able to do was use the health data to give our users discounts from insurance companies. So we went from being a coaching and wearables company to have an entire healthcare ecosystem on our platform,” said Gondal.

 The amount has not been disclosed yet. Ratan Tata funds yet another startup, this time it is a fitness tracker

<keyword id="2143783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="GOQii">GOQii</keyword>, the fitness technology firm from California, became the leader of India's wearable device market in the quarter ending June, leaving behind <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>. 
 The market is also said to have expanded in the quoted quarter by a massive 42% as compared to the previous quarter, showing that more and more people are now getting interested towards <keyword id="1531471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="wearable-devices">wearable devices</keyword>. 
 GOQii secured a 16.1% share in the market, followed by Xiaomi (10.3%), <keyword id="6486191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fitbit">Fitbit</keyword> (6.7%), <keyword id="58449" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Garmin">Garmin</keyword> (1.4%) and <keyword id="6357456" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Huawei">Huawei</keyword> (1%), says data from International Data Corporation (<keyword id="6377157" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IDC">IDC</keyword>). 
 
"The access to a personal trainer has been the unique selling point of the vendor and with the launch of second generation of device, GOQii has created an ecosystem including partnership with diagnostic centres and doctors," IDC said, as per <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/hardware/goqii-pips-xiaomi-to-emerge-no-1-in-indias-wearable-devices-market/articleshow/54039706.cms">ET</a>.

GOQii becomes No. 1 in India's wearable devices market, Xiaomi follows

But while fitness trackers like the Fitbit and Jawbone Up aim to help us improve our health, they're really not all that effective tools, GOQii founder Vishal Gondal tells Business Insider.
"I have used every possible fitness band," Gondal says. "While these devices promised to help you get fit, in reality, they didn't really work for most people." 
That's why a lot of people stop using these devices after a few months, he says. In fact, <a href="http://endeavourpartners.net/white-papers/" target="_blank">one-third of people abandon their wearable tech devices within just six months</a>, according to a report from January.
Enter GOQii, a fitness band that automatically transmits data to a personal health coach in India. A huge differentiating factor between GOQii and other fitness trackers is that the company gives away its band for free, and also allows you to communicate with your own pesonal coach. 
"Forget about looking at the device as the center of the ecosystem," Gondal says. "The device is not the ecosystem. The ecosystem is your coach."
The band and accompanying app are just tools for communication, Gondal says. Some apps have leaderboards and try to name and shame you, but Gondal says that doesn't work well. The real value, Gondal says, comes from a coach who is accountable and can help you actively manage your lifestyle.
These coaches, which will eventually be responsible for between 100 and 150 "players," are based in Mumbai, India. There are other companies that offer remote fitness coaching, but RetroFit, for example, <a href="http://www.retrofitme.com/" target="_blank">charges a minimum of $250 per month</a>. Outsourcing coaches is a lot of the reason why GOQii can keep its costs low. 
GOQii tracks things like steps, distance, time, calories, active time and sleep. The GOQii then automatically shares that data with your coach, <a href="http://www.goqii.com/" target="_blank">all of whom have been vetted by GOQii's team of experts</a>.
<h3>Why Gondal is the right person to fix the engagement issue in wearable tech </h3>
So if the GOQii band is free, how does the company make money? Well, it charges $99 for six months' worth of communication with your coach. For a full year, you'd pay about $169. As part of the service, you can always contact your coach via chat, in addition to a scheduled monthly call with him or her.

Gondal founded his first company, game developer Indiagames, in 1999, at the ripe age of 16. In 2011, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111006/disney-set-to-acquire-top-indian-game-developer-indiagames/" target="_blank">Gondal sold Indiagames to Disney for around $100 million</a>.
That's why Gondal could be just the perfect person for the job: because gaming is all about sustained engagement. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111006/disney-set-to-acquire-top-indian-game-developer-indiagames/">Indiagames was the top gaming company in India</a> when he sold it; Gondal found a lot of success getting players to engage with his games and keep them coming back. 
"Motivation is actually the holy grail when it comes to helping people make a change in lifestyle," Gondal says.
Gondal got the idea two years ago when his trainer started looking at his Fitbit data to help him set goals. 
<h3>GOQii's end game</h3>
GOQii is more so going for a platform play, Gondal says. But the idea isn't to make money off of the hardware. 
That's why GOQii would be more than willing to integrate with other devices like the Jawbone Up, Fitbit Flex, etc. 
Even if you decided you don't want to be part of the GOQii program, you can still keep the device at no extra charge. 
GOQii's end goal is about helping people become more charitable. For every 390 steps, GOQii "players" get one karma point. Those points all go toward a charity of the player's choice.

After Selling His Startup To Disney For Millions, This Founder Is Giving Away Fitness Trackers For Free

New Delhi, May 14 () Smart wearables company GOQii on Thursday launched a new smart band featuring sensors for measuring body temperature and said it has partnered with German health tech startup Thryve to conduct a clinical study in India to detect COVID-19 infections using the device. The device - Vital 3.0 - has been developed in under two months by the company, and can help users track vitals like body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and sleep apart from step count. The thermal sensor allows continuous monitoring as well as on-demand checking, and has an accuracy of +/- 0.3 °F. "In the current COVID-19 situation, there is an urgent need for development of rapid wearable diagnostics to identify and isolate COVID-19 cases and track and prevent the spread of the virus. The Vital 3.0 provides data around pulse, temperature and sleep, which can be used to analyse whether the user is symptomatic of diseases like COVID-19," GOQii founder and CEO Vishal Gondal said.He added that the US Army had recently called out to tech companies to develop such a device. "We have shared details of Vital 3 with the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium and are awaiting their feedback," he said adding that Vital 3.0 is only a screening device and not a medical device. Gondal said GOQii brand ambassador Akshay Kumar has donated 1,000 of these bands to Mumbai Police who are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19. The Mumbai Police department will be able to remotely track and manage the health of its personnel via GOQii's platform, he added.The Vital 3.0 will be available in India in phases and on an immediate basis for the frontline workers, government and private enterprises. Some units will be available for retail sales and the band will be priced at Rs 3,999. Gondal said plans are underway to launch in the US, the UK, Australia, Japan, UAE, Singapore and other countries."Following PM Narendra Modi's call of 'Be Vocal about Local', we are evaluating manufacturing options in India," he added.Talking about the partnership with Thryve, Gondal said GOQii will conduct a clinical study in India to check the accuracy of early detection of COVID-19 using the device. Detection of characteristic changes in body temperature and other vital data enable early detection of COVID-19 symptoms. The preparation for clinical trials are underway and in three-six months, the results will determine the future of early diagnosis and its accuracy, he explained.Gondal said the company is engaged in discussions with a number of companies across sectors including ride-sharing, food delivery, e-commerce and logistics globally for the device."Combined usage of the detection algorithm and the GOQii Vital 3.0 smart band can help significantly in isolating potential COVID-19 patients and preventing further spread. COVID-19: GOQii launches smart band with body temp sensors

After retiring from Google in February 2016, <keyword id="6372293" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Singhal">Amit Singhal</keyword>, a former Google Fellow who is often regarded as the master of Google 'ranking algorithm', has decided to join the board of directors at fitness startup GOQii. Singhal was associated with Google for 15 years. 
 
In an interview to ET, Singhal stated that prior to joining the Vishal Gondal-founded firm, he had also invested in it as an angel investor in 2014. 
 
Now that he has joined the board of the start-up, he hopes to bring his expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning he brings from Google to boost GOQii, so that the service can be made more predictive and preventive. 
 
"The idea that is most intriguing about GOQii is having a human being working with artificial intelligence to motivate the user," he said. 
 
Born in Jhansi, the 47-year old also said, "It is not just some bit of learning... but there will be a lot of artificial intelligence going in the background. The interface to these things has not evolved to a point where a human being is fully comfortable with it, especially in an area like health and wellness... so a lot of science has to be worked upon. The world needs good health and it needs to be motivated about it." 
 
Singhal said that combining algorithmic-machine learning to human beings makes it a very powerful model. "I have always believed in the symphony between machines and human beings to achieve things that won't be achieved otherwise," said the PhD holder from Cornell University. 
 
Taking of the start-up, GOQii has got investments from the venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Chinese mobile internet company Cheetah Mobile and DSG Consumer Partners; along with having many other Silicon Valley stalwarts, like WhatsApp’s Neeraj Arora, Flextronics’s Mike McNamara, Seagate’s Steve Luczo, Basis’s Bharat Vasan and Dr Shriram Nene as angel investors.

Earlier, Flipkart had deemed GOQii’s claims to be <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/flipkart-goqii-battle-on-pricing-intensifies/69511518">baseless</a> when the fitness brand reached out the Department of Promotion of Industrial and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) with concerns over how its products were being sold online at discounts of up to 70-80%. The tech giant was actually waiting for India’s new government to come into power to seek clarifications around the rules. But, considering that the Bombay Civil Court ruling didn’t play in Flipkart’s favour — the company will now also be under DPIIT and CCI’s radar, for flouting their norms. Deep discounts, deep trouble Vishal Gondal, the founder and CEO of GOQii, sent legal notices to Flipkart over the issue. The Bombay Civil Court passed an interim order to prevent any more damage to the fitness gadget firm, from excessive discounts.

Flipkart's continued deep discounting could mean more trouble in the future

Thanks to its flagship affordable fitness tracker Mi Band, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> has become the top player in India’s wearable market with a 27.1% market share in the first quarter of 2016. In the list, it is followed by GOQii and Fitbit, as per data from research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), with 18.1% and 6.2%, respectively. 
 
The list ranks Korean smartphone maker Samsung at the fourth place with a 2.5% market share. 
 
Xiaomi and GOQii have together contributed over 45% share in the Indian wearable market, even as Fitbit had the maximum market value share. 
 
The smart wearables segment is yet to gain momentum in the market because of the higher price; however, there is some scope since Intex has recently launched Fitrist and Xiaomi is also going to launch Mi Band 2, at affordable prices. 
 
The expected launch of affordable smartwatches in the latter half of the year could also result in a rapid growth in the share of smart devices.

After his investment in the men’s grooming startup Beardo, Shetty has invested an undisclosed amount in online fitness community SQUATS. The startup was launched in 2016 and had started off as community on Facebook to tackle challenges in the fitness industry. And the now three-year old startup which offers customized diet and fitness plans to its users, has grown fast to have over 5,00,000 members. It has also generated a cumulative revenue of $8.5 million over the years. They have over 160 fitness consultants on board. And this is the first investment that the startup has scored. “In today’s time, when all kinds of false information about fitness is common, there is a critical need for companies like SQUATS, which address the issues of trust and credibility in the Indian fitness space, focusing on ‘balancing quantified nutrition with weight training’ and delivering exceptional results,” Shetty said about his investment. The startup which was bootstrapped until now will work on its underlying technological framework, strengthen its team, and expand its pan-India operations. Interestingly, around 30% of the startup’s clientele are already NRIs. The startup also has a mobile app called FITTR. The founder Jitendra Chouksey now plans to reach out to at least 50 million users.
