Gone are the days of those online and unwritten wars of startups in India. Now, this real fight between 32 startup entrepreneurs will blow your mind once they enter into the boxing ring for a one-on-one pitch battle. 
 The global startup competition, ‘<keyword id="3101004" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Get-in-the-Ring">Get in the Ring</keyword>,’ has received over 240 entries for the competition that will take place in three categories: 
 
· Light-weight 
· Middle-weight 
· Heavy-weight 
 
In the next phase of this war, the winners from India will get a chance to participate in the Asian finals that is slated to be held in South Korea. During the international finals, winners from around 10 countries will fight for the final spot. And then, the final winner will get an investment of up to 1 million, reported The Economic Times. 
 Jochem Cuppen, global director of Get in the Ring (<keyword id="1151869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="GITR">GITR</keyword>) Foundation, says, "I have seen that in the past years, India has become so much better in converting the available talent to workable ideas and companies, so I am expecting a lot from these (shortlisted) startups.” 
 
GITR, which is a non-profit organisation backed by Kauffman Foundation, is barely three years old but has emerged as one of the leading firm of its kind with national-level events conducted in over 80 countries. 
 As part of the ongoing <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword> Product Conclave, the event is being organised by Nasscom in collaboration with Trifecta Capital and TLabs. 
 Those who will play the judge of the competition includes Dave McLure of 500 startups, Ravi Gururaj of Nasscom, Mukund Mohan of <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> Ventures, Stephen Lurie of Team Builder Ventures, Rahul Khanna of Trifecta Capital, and Abhishek Gupta of TLabs. 
 
The investment battle will begin with a five round verbal sparring in front of a full-house audience.

Indian startups to come to blows in ‘Get in the Ring’ competition

The US was still a noncombatant, but it was preparing for a fight.That month, the US introduced the Selective Training and Service Act - the first peacetime draft in US history. Mobilizing the millions of troops was a monumental task and essential to deploying "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anniversary-of-b-24-liberator-bomber-first-flight-during-world-war-ii-2017-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the arsenal of democracy</a>" that President Franklin D. Roosevelt called on Americans to provide.Inducting millions of civilians and turning them into effective troops - and keeping them happy, healthy, supplied, and fighting - was also a daunting challenge.In order to find the best way to do that, the War Department mounted an opinion survey, polling nearly a half-million soldiers stationed all around the world throughout the war. Their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/world-war-ii-surveys-what-soldiers-wanted-from-military-society-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uncensored responses</a>, given as the war was being fought, are an unprecedented window into how those troops felt about the war, the military, and their role in both."Entirely too much boot-licking going on," one soldier wrote. "Some sort of a merit system should be instituted.""Spam, Spam, Spam. All I dream about is Spam," wrote another.In an email interview, <a href="https://liberalarts.vt.edu/departments-and-schools/department-of-history/faculty/edward-gitre.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edward Gitre</a>, a history professor at Virginia Tech whose project, <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/tkotwim/the-american-soldier">The American Soldier in World War II</a>, has compiled tens of thousands of responses to those surveys, explained why the Army sought the unvarnished opinions of its soldiers and what those opinions revealed.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The December 7, 1941, attack on <keyword id="12689284" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pearl-harbor" source="Orion">Pearl Harbor</keyword> thrust the US into <keyword id="11938566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="world-war-ii" source="Orion">World War II</keyword>.</li><li>Histories of the attack and its aftermath portray a country and a military braced for war.</li></ul>Tuesday is the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on <a href="https://www.census.gov/history/pdf/pearl-harbor-fact-sheet-1.pdf" target="_top">Pearl Harbor</a>, which killed 2,400 civilians and sailors, wounded nearly 1,200 Americans, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-us-navy-aircraft-carriers-avoided-destruction-at-pearl-harbor-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">damaged or destroyed 19 naval vessels and 328 aircraft</a>.It also thrust an ambivalent nation into World War II.Stories abound of young men joining up after Pearl Harbor. But how did US troops respond when they learned of the attack?Thanks to an Army survey program launched the very next day, we know what was on the minds of GIs in the Army's Ninth Infantry Division, which was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, the US's largest military installation.President Franklin Roosevelt's declaration of war on Japan on December 8 may have braced many Americans for the fight ahead, but the concerns of most men of the Ninth, it appears, had little to do with events in Washington, DC, or in Hawaii.In fact, getting US troops to take the Imperial Japanese Army seriously was more difficult than some histories of the Pacific war would suggest.<h2>The Army research program that almost wasn't</h2><div type="image" title="Sailors read about Pearl Harbor attak" height="1606" width="2000" msid="88147674" hostid="261"></div>The timing of the survey was purely coincidental. A special study group in the US Army Intelligence Division began developing the questionnaire used at Fort Bragg well before Japan's attack.Scientific opinion polling of the American public was new but rapidly increasing before the war. It wasn't easy to get approval to poll US soldiers — in fact, it almost never happened.Elmo Roper Jr., a highly respected and pioneering pollster, offered the War Department his services. Not only was he turned away, but Secretary of War Henry Stimson prohibited polling outright.For an Army dependent on cohesion, anonymous criticism could only be "destructive," explained the curt press release publicizing the ban.But surveying personnel about their needs, behaviors, and attitudes seemed prudent to Frederick Osborn, a former corporate executive who was helping the military provide morale services to troops.Osborn was an advocate of the social sciences. More decisively for his efforts, he was a childhood friend of Roosevelt. When the chief of the Army Morale Branch stepped down for health reasons in early August 1941, Osborn was tapped as his replacement.An "over-night General," Osborn quickly facilitated a $100,000 grant from Carnegie Corporation, where he was a trustee, to recruit top-notch psychologists and social scientists without putting them on the Army's payroll.<div type="image" title="Navy recruits after Pearl Harbor attack" height="1458" width="2000" msid="88147677" hostid="261"></div>Polling was still banned, but Osborn received approval for a more benign "survey" of soldier morale, called Planning Survey I.Stimson would not have approved had he known, and the Ninth was selected only because a commanding general elsewhere refused to cooperate.The new research team scrambled to conduct the survey, worrying that holiday furloughs might delay it.On December 2, Fort Bragg's commanding general approved, and within two days the team was selecting soldiers for the survey, scheduled for December 8 to 10, and training a small group of other enlistees as "class leaders" to help administer it.The team was doing final training with class leaders and interviewers when news of the attack flashed across the radio. In a second, they knew some questions were now useless.The team completed the survey by the night of December 10, using four recreation halls, a theater, and several day rooms for interviews. Study director Samuel Stouffer started analyzing the 1,878 questionnaires that evening. He would hardly sleep during the following nights.Eighty years after Pearl Harbor, the soldiers' handwritten and multiple-choice responses are available for the first time, thanks to the <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/tkotwim/the-american-soldier" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Soldier in World War II</a> project, which has collected and transcribed 65,000 pages of uncensored commentaries.<h2>What was on soldiers' minds</h2><div type="image" title="Army soldiers from Fort Bragg with dates" height="1305" width="2000" msid="88147680" hostid="261"></div>Some respondents felt exactly how we'd imagine they'd feel when they learned of the Japanese attack."Now that Japan has started the war, and the U.S. has declared war, every America Soldier will do his utmost to win this war, and America will win, So help us 'God,'" <a href="https://americansoldierww2.org/surveys/a/PS1.Q118.F.20723456" target="_top">wrote</a> one GI.Judging from the remarks of the 1,030 men who responded to the open-ended prompt on the last page of the survey, the US declaration of war was less than transformative.A few soldiers mentioned Japanese soldiers. "I do not believe there is one man in this army who would back away from any Jap &amp; I know we will die fighting," another enlistee <a href="https://americansoldierww2.org/surveys/a/PS1.Q118.F.20723344" target="_top">wrote</a>.Hardly any called for swift retribution, much less expressed the level of racial animus that histories of the US war with Japan have emphasized.As they were more likely than other Americans to face combat, few of the soldiers appeared eager for war."Don't, for God's sake, take away furloughs right now. Don't get excited about Japan. Be calm and remember that we need furloughs more so now than before. To take away all furloughs now is not needed in this division yet—war organization will take time—and we don't want AWOL's," <a href="https://americansoldierww2.org/surveys/a/PS1.Q118.F.20723717" target="_top">cautioned</a> another respondent.Like this soldier, most men wrote about more immediate personal needs and desires — furloughs, passes, and whether they'd get to go home and life on the base and amenities (or lack of thereof) in Fayetteville, the nearest town.The vast majority wrote about the Army itself and what they thought it was doing wrong.<h2>More ambivalence than hatred</h2><div type="image" title="US Army soldiers in weapons training at Fort Bragg" height="1305" width="2000" msid="88147684" hostid="261"></div>The US government invested heavily in racist propaganda during the war that portrayed the Japanese as brutish. That effort is partially explained by a trend in the Army's survey data that troubled the General Staff: Too many GIs did not consider Japanese soldiers all that formidable, even after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-fort-drum-philippines-saw-fierce-wwii-fighting-2021-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">they defeated the US in the Philippines</a>.American troops massing in England for the November 1942 invasion of North Africa were asked to rank the fighting ability of Allied and Axis soldiers. Russians were believed to be the best, followed by Germans. They ranked Japanese soldiers sixth in a list of eight.Army's leaders attributed soldiers' disregard for Japanese fighting ability to a "deficiency of information."Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall — dismayed after reviewing a secret research report on the survey — wanted the details of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bataan-death-march-photos-from-world-war-ii-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the fighting with the Japanese on Bataan</a> to be more widely distributed to illustrate "their toughness, tenacity of purpose, utter willingness to die, refusal to surrender—a general ruthless purpose which only great determination and skill can conquer."Using all the media at its disposal — orientation and information films such as the "Why We Fight" series, short-wave radio programs, servicemen's newspapers, pictorial newsmaps, and graphic posters — Marshall's staff redoubled its efforts to change attitudes.<h2>Attitudes tempered by battle</h2><div type="image" title="Pearl Harbor attack grave" height="1576" width="2000" msid="88147687" hostid="261"></div>Whether the Army's efforts to change perceptions worked is an open question.Soldiers were asked later in the war how much they relied on thoughts of hatred of the enemy when the going was tough. Of soldiers in the Pacific, 38% responded indicated "a lot." Only 27% in Europe said the same.Soldiers may have cultivated hatred of the Japanese to cope and endure. Yet when the veteran infantrymen of the Pacific and European theaters were asked if the Japanese people should suffer after the war, GIs in Europe were more inclined to say yes, while those in the Pacific were not.Of infantrymen in Europe, 58% wanted the Allies to "wipe out the whole nation" of Japan when it was all over. Only 42% of Pacific GIs, still a large share, said the same.Some had gained the appreciation Marshall wanted them to have."There is something I hate to admit, but we did not win our battles because the Americans was better than the Japs. On the contrary, the Jap had it all over us, both Officers &amp; men. It was our superiority in strength &amp; equipment," <a href="https://americansoldierww2.org/surveys/a/S100E.Q65.F.15883916" target="_top">confessed</a> a combat infantry stationed in the Mediterranean.Edward J.K. Uncensored WWII-era surveys show US troops' surprising thoughts about Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor

During five brief rounds they presented their startup to a jury of champion investors, and an audience of potential investors and fans, in a competition that will result in a potential investment for the winner. 

	Mr. Rajat Tandon, Vice President, NASSCOM 10 K start-up program, said “Platform like GITR is ideal for young entrepreneurs who are looking at getting an extended exposure to the startup community of other countries. It gives the startups visibility internationally which is useful for market access. 	The unique challenge saw participation from 32 startup which included both Indian and International ones. This was internationally the Kickoff event of the new GITR season. The international event which is targeted at innovative startups in India and abroad was co-hosted by DHI Labs, a German based Start-up Incubator venture at Impact Chapter: Startup Challenge in Hyderabad. The event was held at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), HICC Complex , Near HITECH City, Hyderabad, Telangana. Between 2012 and 2014, the concept of Get In The Ring spread rapidly around the world. Startups enter boxing ring to capitalise their talent

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Recent controversy over how issues of race are taught in the US has ensnared grade schools, universities, and even the military.</li><li>As World War II-era surveys show, the military has grappled with those issues for decades and often falls short of its own standards.</li></ul>Months of protests over how the US's troubled history of race is taught came to a head on Election Day in Virginia.If Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin bans critical race theory in the commonwealth's public schools on "<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/glenn-youngkin-vows-to-take-bold-stand-against-critical-race-theory-as-governor" target="_top">Day One</a>," as he vowed on Fox News in the closing hours of his campaign, the battle will hardly be over.In those same remarks, Youngkin implored viewers to heed Martin Luther King Jr.'s "immortal words" that "we're called to judge one another based on the content of our character and not the color of our skin." Heirs of King's work and others have <a href="https://twitter.com/JoyAnnReid/status/1455920574031618050?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_top">pilloried</a> invocations of his "I have a dream" sermon to justify banning discussion of systemic racism.The agitation over critical race theory - a field of scholarly inquiry that examines how racism, intentional or not, is institutionalized and embedded in laws, systems, and policies - and competing citations of King are only the latest expressions of a long-running conflict over persistent racial inequality in America.This phase has focused on schools, but for 80 years, and well before King's sermon, the US military has struggled with the same issue.<h2>'We will do better'</h2><div type="image" title="Gen. Mark Milley and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sitting at a table." height="2677" width="4014" msid="87650548" hostid="261"></div>Over those eight decades, the military has espoused the precept that people ought to be judged by their character and performance, not their skin color. It has fallen well short of its own standard.The Department of Defense does now have its first Black secretary, Lloyd Austin. While <keyword id="12513500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="african-americans" source="Orion">African-Americans</keyword> represent 19% of all active-duty service members, the military has only two Black four-star generals and admirals, as Maryland Rep. Anthony Brown, a retired Army colonel, reminded Austin during a hearing <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?512740-1/defense-department-fiscal-year-2022-budget-request" target="_top">this summer</a>.Pressed by Brown on the "significant underrepresentation" of people of color and women in the senior ranks, Austin touted the military's diversity as reflective of the American public but concurred with Brown: "We need to do better. You have my commitment. We will do better."<div type="image" title="African-American Black Army soldiers World War II" height="1305" width="2000" msid="87650550" hostid="261"></div>The military hasn't avoided backlash over critical race theory, either. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/06/23/1009592838/top-general-defends-studying-critical-race-theory-in-the-military" target="_top">made headlines</a> at the same hearing for his considered but forceful response to another congressman's accusation that cadets were being indoctrinated with critical race theory.The military's handling of other race-related issues has received much less coverage, however.At the same hearing, Brown asked more pointed questions about a 2019 <a href="https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-19-344.pdf" target="_top">study</a> by the Government Accountability Office, which found that minority personnel across the military were more than five times as likely as White personnel to be court-martialed for similar conduct."Why are the commanders woefully failing our Black service members who serve at higher rates than any other demographic group?" Brown asked Austin. "And how do we fix this system so that there is truly equal justice under the Uniform Code of Military Justice?"<h2>Fighting 2 wars</h2><div type="image" title="Segregated bus station in Durham North Carolina" height="1345" width="2000" msid="87650552" hostid="261"></div>When challenged on similar issues during <keyword id="11938566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="world-war-ii" source="Orion">World War II</keyword>, the US War Department took the position that it did not see skin color.Before and long after Congress passed the country's first peacetime draft in September 1941, Black leaders lobbied the Roosevelt administration to enact anti-discrimination policies.To one such recommendation, the Secretary of War Henry Stimson responded that not only was "everything possible" being done, but also that "Our policies make no distinction between white and colored soldiers."Distinctions, of course, were made every day across the force and in the communities that surrounded and served the department's facilities and installations - and it was official department policy.Despite this "extensive campaign," Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall assured one northern senator that the department's policy "not to intermingle colored and white enlisted personnel in the same regimental organization" would hold.Preventing racial commingling was costly and difficult. It required the construction and maintenance (of differing quality) of separate barracks, latrines, mess halls, clubs, theaters, swimming pools, and post exchanges, among others - expanding Jim Crow's reach as more bases were built.<div type="image" title="African-American soldiers in England during World War II" height="1591" width="2000" msid="87650554" hostid="261"></div>Beginning in August 1942, the War Department delegated the <keyword id="6406977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="segregation" source="Orion">segregation</keyword> of recreation facilities, including theaters and post exchanges, to local commanders.The following March the department went a step further, prohibiting separate Black and White recreation facilities where two or more races were garrisoned.Resistance was predicted. From surveys administered to monitor morale, the Army already knew that the majority of White soldiers - from the north and south - opposed integration.Only 148 of the 4,793 enlisted personnel who participated in a large cross-section survey given in March 1943 thought Black and White soldiers should serve in the same outfits. Just one in 12 thought it OK to share service clubs, and only one in seven approved of sharing post exchanges.Opponents listed the likelihood of conflict as their primary concern."If negroes &amp; whites were in same outfits, naturally there would be much blood shed. It would lead into serious developments, in the future. In fact I believe we would be fighting two wars, negroes &amp; the Axis," wrote one White soldier.Some commanders responded to the new order by replacing the offending signs and maintaining Jim Crow in other ways. Others simply ignored it.Non-enforcement coincided with a buildup of Black troops, and by summer 1943 <a href="https://detroithistorical.org/learn/encyclopedia-of-detroit/race-riot-1943" target="_top">discontented</a> Black Americans <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Harlem-race-riot-of-1943" target="_top">took to the streets</a> across the US.<div type="image" title="US Army soldiers eating in mess hall World War II" height="916" width="2000" msid="87650556" hostid="261"></div>The Army did take steps to address segregated transportation facilities - a frequent source and site of racial intimidation, conflict, and violence - by ordering local commanders to eliminate discrimination based on color, race, or creed.Those commanders, even cooperative ones, still had to rely on civilian services that maintained those practices. But with White soldiers and officers in open defiance of the military's efforts to end discrimination, resentment mounted.Handwritten open-ended responses from an August 1944 survey, which have only recently been transcribed, reveal the depth and breadth of what Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy described as a "radical change" in attitudes."Sooner or later there will be some changes made one way or the other," warned one Black soldier. "The boys are getting tired of it. We all fighting like any other soldier and it is a god dam[n] shame that some people can let such conditions exist &amp; call this a democracy.""Fascism is fascism, whether in America or in Europe and if we are all fighting for the same common purpose why must there be a White Army and Negro Army," wrote another.<h2>Lessons unlearned</h2><div type="image" title="Men working on engine at factory during World War II" height="1529" width="2000" msid="87650557" hostid="261"></div>The Army could not wait for White attitudes to change. A pressing need for replacements in Europe led the Army to compromise its commitment not to intermingle personnel.Gen. John C. H. Lee, deputy theater commander in Europe, issued a letter on December 26, 1944, recruiting Black volunteers to join White rifle companies. Mixed companies were soon formed in 11 divisions in two separate armies.The results, documented by before-and-after surveys of White officers, were remarkable.Only one-third of those initially <a href="https://www.trumanlibrary.gov/library/research-files/opinions-about-negro-infantry-platoons-white-companies-7-divisions?documentid=NA&amp;pagenumber=3er=3" target="_top">surveyed</a> were in favor of leading mixed companies.
