It has set up over 30 multi-modal charging hubs nationally. “India has the potential to become an EV first country. The push to EVs will mean a complete rethinking of the transportation ecosystem, which in many places has to be built ground-up. MoEVing is working to do that in the commercial EV space as we strongly believe that EV adoption will be driven by commercial transportation, especially in the first/last mile delivery space,” Vikash Mishra, co-founder &amp; CEO at MoEVing said. Electric mobility platform MoEving raises $2.5 million from JSW Ventures

After the pandemic’s second wave, though, the newly elected state has decided to focus more on vaccinations than economic stimulus. They are vaccinating district by district, and in the meanwhile releasing ration kits to help the poor to tide over the bad times. Kerala ranked 11th among all Indian states for its vaccination rate, <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1222266/india-cumulative-coverage-of-covid-19-vaccine-across-india/">as of June 28 </a>. The finance minister of the state, K N Balagopal, discussed the troubles of small businesses and their policies with Sriram Iyer, as part of Business Insider’s <keyword id="4106334" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="msme-exchange">MSME Exchange</keyword>, a virtual event dedicated to small businesses in the country. Edited excerpts: You released a relief package of ₹20,000 crore in your latest budget. While a few hail it as a countercyclical measure, was it the intent? The second COVID wave is much more serious than expected. There are reports that there is a chance for a third wave where new areas like pediatrics need to be strengthened. So, we thought that our emphasis should be mainly on health where we gave maximum emphasis and allotted ₹2800 crores in the budget itself. This was for universal vaccination, and more facilities to the hospitals and especially pediatrics. This is an infectious disease, which requires a lot of infrastructure. So, we planned to combat and have the COVID situation covered. Then, our people will be safe enough to work. Our industry will work. Our service sector will work. Our agriculture industry and also our major area of activity ⁠— <keyword id="20048" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tourism">tourism</keyword> where people feel safe to go to. In our plan, first comes health, and second is on agriculture and industry which includes MSMEs [micro, small and medium enterprises]. We are also providing food kits to all families. We have also cleared pending bills for contracts, which were lagging behind for six months or even a year. All this money will go to people. Those who do not receive pensions will also be paid. So your plan is to declare a few districts as Covid-free. And that everybody is vaccinated, so tourists start coming in and, therefore, everything else like hotels, transport and small enterprises start moving. Not just the tourists, though they are very important. We have around 33 million people working outside and now 1.4 million are back here. It’s a very tricky point for you. Putting the million plus people returning from the Gulf countries to work. Kerala has many things to be proud of like primary healthcare, education and tourism, but its manufacturing industry is not its greatest strength. How are you going to employ these people? We have a programme to help industry and agriculture. We are announcing some schemes like MSMEs with loans [sic] with lower interest rates. Have you announced these, or are you going to announce? We already announced them. Is it the Chief Minister's entrepreneurship scheme? Not just that. We are providing ₹10,000 crores [of] subsidised loan. We are planning to provide ₹2,000 crores to agricultural cooperatives like societies, which can do agriculture related industry or set up such units. Are small businesses even taking loans? They seem to be worried about demand, and are choosing to be cautious. It is a serious issue. That is why I said if your economy is not active, you cannot do anything with this. If our industries are producing something and nobody is there for purchasing, so there is no need. Then it's a very long discussion on how to create demand. What we are doing with [the] stimulus package is to ensure that people get money via loan schemes. Many people might want some loan, if an interest subsidy is there. If industry is working, and there is some money coming in, the demand will come. I would add that it is not a fast process. How will the state be able to finance these schemes? Especially, since remittances are going to take a hit with the return of people who were working in the Gulf countries and sending money back to Kerala. It is not [only] Kerala, but other governments are also facing this problem. The central government has everything with it [sic], be it GST [goods and services tax] or taxes or petroleum cess - it’s all with them. The central government has to make a very serious plan to help the states. And not just the states, but their subjects, common people, the industrialists. There should be some plan. Otherwise, the economy will not be revived. In your recent statements about I know you have a lot of anger, a lot like a lot of other state governments because they're not getting their share. They have to wait and all of that. But do you really believe that the sum total of GST’s impact on the economy has been really that bad that it should be repealed? Even the harshest critics of the Modi government would say that the idea is good, but implementation was lacking. And do you really think that India can sustain another shock of going through a complete overhaul of the tax regime one more time in just three years? No, no, that’s not what I said. The experience of GST in the country shows that it is not implemented properly. We gave a dissent note on behalf of the Left. These issues mainly raise the question of federalism. And now, state governments are not getting enough freedom. But there's a thinking among the people who supported GST earlier, who supported GST earlier that it's very detrimental to the interest of the state governments. And, if this feeling grows, it will not help the unity of the country. Kerala Finance Minister believes in just one economic stimulus ⁠— vaccines

A year-long study of the <keyword id="749867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dietary-habits" source="Orion">dietary habits</keyword> of 9,341 Australians has backed growing evidence that highly processed and refined foods are the leading contributor to rising obesity rates in the Western world. The new study, in the latest issue of the journal Obesity conducted by the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), was based on a national nutrition and physical activity survey undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and further backs the '<keyword id="15478813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="protein-leverage-hypothesis" source="Orion">Protein Leverage Hypothesis</keyword>'. First put forward in 2005 by professors Raubenheimer and Stephen Simpson, the Protein Leverage Hypothesis argues that people overeat fats and carbohydrates because of the body's strong appetite for protein, which the body actively favours over everything else. Because so much of modern diets consist of highly processed and refined foods -- which are low in protein -- people are driven to consume more energy-dense foods until they satisfy their protein demand. "As people consume more junk foods or highly processed and refined foods, they dilute their dietary protein and increase their risk of being overweight and obese, which we know increases the risk of chronic disease," said lead author Dr Amanda Grech, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the CPC and the university's School of Life and Environmental Sciences. "It's increasingly clear that our bodies eat to satisfy a protein target," added Professor David Raubenheimer, the Leonard Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. "But the problem is that the food in Western diets has increasingly less protein. So, you have to consume more of it to reach your protein target, which effectively elevates your daily energy intake. "Humans, like many other species, have a stronger appetite for protein than for the main energy-providing nutrients of fats and carbohydrates. That means that if the protein in our diet is diluted with fats and carbohydrates, we will eat more energy to get the protein that our bodies crave." Proteins are the building blocks of life: every cell in the body contains them, and they are used to repair cells or make new ones; and it's estimated that over a million forms of protein are needed to allow a human body to function. Protein sources include meats, milk, fish, eggs, soy, legumes, beans, and some grains such as wheat germ and quinoa. The University of Sydney scientists analysed data from a cross-sectional survey of nutrition and physical activity in 9,341 adults, known as the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey which was conducted from May 2011 to June 2012, with a mean age of 46.3 years. They found the population's mean energy intake was 8,671 kilojoules (kJ), with the mean percentage of energy from protein being just 18.4 percent, compared with 43.5 percent from carbohydrates and from 30.9 percent from fat, and just 2.2 percent from fibre and 4.3 percent from alcohol. They then plotted energy intake versus the time of consumption and found that the pattern matched that predicted by the Protein Leverage Hypothesis. Those who consumed lower amounts of protein in their first meal of the day went on to increase their overall food intake in subsequent meals, whereas those who received the recommended amount of protein did not -- and, in fact, declined their food intake throughout the day. They also found a statistically significant difference between groups by the third meal of the day: those with a higher proportion of energy from protein at the start of the day had much lower total energy intake for the day. Meanwhile, those who consumed foods low in protein at the start of the day proceeded to increase consumption, indicating they were seeking to compensate with a higher consumption of overall energy. This is despite the fact the first meal was the smallest for both groups, with the least amount of energy and food consumed, whereas the last meal was the largest. Participants with a lower proportion of protein than recommended at the first meal consumed more discretionary foods -- energy-dense foods high in saturated fats, sugars, salt, or alcohol -- throughout the day, and less of the recommended five food groups (grains; vegetables/legumes; fruit; dairy and meats). Consequently, they had an overall poorer diet at each mealtime, with their percentage of protein energy decreasing even as their discretionary food intake rose -- an effect the scientists call 'protein dilution'. You're eating fats and carbs because your body wants protein

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s software export revenue and remittances act as a strong counter-cyclical buffer against the increase in current account deficit (<keyword id="52599" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cad" source="Orion">CAD</keyword>) due to a hike in global oil prices and rupee depreciation, said the State Bank of India's (SBI) Chief Economic Adviser. In a research report Dr <keyword id="6448502" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="soumya-kanti-ghosh" source="Orion">Soumya Kanti Ghosh</keyword>, Group Chief Economic Adviser, SBI, said for every rupee depreciation, software exports increase by $250 million. <keyword id="4757" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ghosh" source="Orion">Ghosh</keyword> said contrary to the expectations, the Q1FY23 Balance of Payments (BOP) numbers have shown a strong counter-cyclical buffer in the form of service exports and remittances. For example, in Q1, India's CAD was expected to reach $30 billion/3.8 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), but the actual numbers came in at 2.8 per cent of GDP. The positive surprise was because of strong remittances and software exports, the CAD got a lift of 60 basis points, Ghosh said. "We expect that if such trends of strong remittances and software exports have continued (<keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> data suggests software exports in Q2 were strong) in Q2, and India's CAD comes in below the threshold level of 3.5 per cent of GDP in Q2, the CAD for FY23 could still be closer to 3 per cent benchmark and not in excess of 3.5 per cent of GDP," he added. Also, forex reserves could jump by another $5 billion as swap transactions reverse and thus have a positive impact on the rupee as is being currently witnessed, he noted. To understand the factors that are impacting India's CAD, Ghosh worked on the structural vector auto-regressions (SVAR) model. With oil forming 30 per cent of India's import bill, it has a major impact on macroeconomic variables. An increase in oil import price impacts directly the trade deficit and consequently, CAD gets widened. That apart, it also results in inflation. According to Ghosh, the SVAR model introduces a counter-cyclical response to increased oil prices in the form of software service exports that is impacted positively because of rupee depreciation. "Although remittances are positively impacted, we have not considered them in our SVAR model because of data volatility." The results of the SVAR model clearly give an idea of the negative impact of oil price shock on CAD, inflation and growth in one direction and the positive impact of software exports on CAD as a result of rupee depreciation. In particular, a positive shock to oil prices leads to an immediate and sharp increase in CAD, which dissipates completely in about eight quarters. The trade deficit also increases up to two quarters after the initial positive oil price shock, he said. "This implies that India's trade deficit may already have been adversely impacted for the first half of the current fiscal because of the oil price shock," Ghosh said. In the case of GDP, a positive shock to oil prices leads to an immediate decline, which however starts reversing after the third quarter and completely dissipates after the seventh quarter. "This implies that India's first-half GDP growth in FY23 could have been impacted because of the oil price shock. Most interestingly, the rupee-dollar exchange rate also gets impacted and it depreciates slightly after an increase in oil prices till three quarters following which it starts appreciating," he said. As a result, the rupee outlook is likely to improve in Q4 of FY23. The impact of oil price on consumer price index (CPI) inflation will dissipate after four quarters and it means that the CPI inflation outlook for FY24 will be consistent with RBI's forecast of 5 per cent. Ghosh said India's software exports are on the rise with the share of the offsite mode of exports by Indian IT service companies increasing to 88.8 per cent in FY22 compared to 82.8 per cent five years ago. Ghosh said a $10 increase in crude oil prices leads to an increase of 40 bps in CAD, 50 bps in CPI and a 23 bps decline in growth with software exports acting as a counter-cyclical buffer. "The exchange rate pass-through from variance decomposition method shows it is at least 10 per cent for CAD, inflation and growth, but significantly stronger at 35 per cent for software exports. For every rupee depreciation, software exports increase by $250 million," Ghosh added. For every rupee depreciation, software exports increase by $250 mn: SBI Chief Economic Advisor

With the rupee witnessing a downward spiral for the past several weeks, even crossing the 83 mark against the US dollar, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> on Wednesday said that the Indian currency has behaved in an orderly manner and its trajectory shouldn't be looked at emotionally. Das, while addressing industry body FICCI's banking summit in Mumbai, said that capital flows will resume as the <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword> will not resort to tightening rates for a long time. The RBI Governor's comments on the rupee came just hours before the US Fed is scheduled to meet later in the day to review key rates. It is anticipated that the <keyword id="6355253" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="federal-reserve" source="Orion">Federal Reserve</keyword> may hike rates to curb rising inflation. Meanwhile, referring to the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee's (<keyword id="6369693" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mpc" source="Orion">MPC</keyword>) scheduled meeting on Thursday to discuss its reply to the government, for failing to keep inflation within its tolerance limit of less than 4 per cent, Das said that the central bank won't immediately release details of the deliberations. The RBI does not have the authority to release these details, he said. The central bank is mandated to keep inflation within the tolerance limit of 2 per cent to 4 per cent. However, its failure to do so for the past nine months has warranted a response from the Centre. Defending the RBI's handling of price rise, Das said that acting prematurely on inflation would have exerted a heavy cost on the economy and citizens. Though he agreed that inflation has not been under control, the RBI Governor at the same time added that the central bank prevented a "complete collapse of the economy by keeping rates lower and stayed away from premature tightening". Speaking on the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), Das said that RBI wants to iron out all aspects related to it before its launch. He said that the e-rupee launch was a landmark moment in the history of currency in the country and it will transform the way business is done and the way transactions are conducted. On Tuesday, the RBI launched a trial of the digital rupee. Kotak Investment Advisors is an alternate assets arm of the Kotak Mahindra Group. With the anchor commitment from ADIA, Kotak Investment Advisors has raised, managed or advised more than $3.3 billion across its 13 real estate funds, the company said. Kotak Investment Advisor’s 13th real estate fund will primarily target the residential sector. “The new platform is primarily targeted at the significant demand for housing in India, which is driven by sustained economic growth and a shortage of urban housing clusters,” said Mohamed AlQubaisi, executive director of ADIA's real estate department. It is domiciled in Gujarat’s GIFT City, and will focus on markets like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. “This is an opportunistic fund which can invest across various real estate asset classes and capital stack, that is, both debt and equity. With the first close of this Fund, KIAL has raised around $1.5 billion in real estate across multiple strategies in around one and a half years,” said Vikas Chimakurthy, CEO, Kotak Realty Fund.
