<br /> Less than a year since America saw some rabid images of lawlessness in <keyword id="70822" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ferguson">Ferguson</keyword>, <keyword id="108481" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baltimore">Baltimore</keyword> has reached a boiling point. And, it’s not surprising that the so called ‘boiling point’ has been a simmering unrest since long. The open-and-shut case that happened right after Ferguson, in August 2014 where an African American youngster <keyword id="126859" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Michael-Brown">Michael Brown</keyword> was shot dead by the local police, Baltimore has been even more pronounced an incident.<br />
<br /> So, was the after-math a complete surprise? Definitely not; the incidents that followed the death of <keyword id="2831976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Freddie-Grey">Freddie Grey</keyword> have some sort of a pattern to them. Yes, this includes the riots too.<br />
<br />
After all, the land of milk and honey and all things nice has turned into some sort of a racist-zone since quite some time. Was the unrest simmering since long? Will America be dominated by those who have stigmas against their darker co-inhabitants just as some part of the world has? The answer seems to be an unsettling ‘perhaps’.<br />
<br />
When civil unrest entered the town of Baltimore in the largest American state of Maryland, it was some sort of a déjà vu that the nation had seen in another part of the country – Ferguson, Missouri; where an unarmed teenager was shot dead following a scuffle. FBI since then opened a civil rights investigation. Rioting and protests followed soon after, and allegations of racism were leveled against officers and the government at a higher level.<br />
<br /> With <keyword id="2540" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="President">President</keyword> <keyword id="16284" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Obama">Obama</keyword> at the helm of affairs, racism in America was probably a bad word that was considered passé. But, that does not seem to be the case. Less than a year later, Baltimore is burning since the death of <keyword id="2819034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Freddie-Gray">Freddie Gray</keyword>, who sustained fatal injuries in police custody and breathed his last after slipping into coma.<br />
<br />
The city of Baltimore was largely peaceful till the funeral procession ended and the rituals were completed. Soon after, the protestors cried ‘racism’ and spilled out on streets. Obama and his team of officers dealt with them sternly. But then, the protestors wouldn’t back out.<br />
There are contradicting accounts that are floating on social media as to how the riots happened. While some call it the doing of a ‘bunch of teenagers who were itching to fight’, the others have a different take altogether. In their knowledge, and most of this is first-hand account, was the doing of police officers who had credible information of teenagers from the now riot-stricken neighbourhood that they were going to assemble, and ‘probably’ spill out on the roads. In their over enthusiastic preparation, the police officers in some ways, fuelled the clashes with their presence and over-preparedness of the situation. <br />
<br />
A single-mom of six children, in all her helplessness, became a picture of grim reality and an unequal America when she came to the spot of protest and beat up her son into leaving the protest march. She was candid, straight and simply a mother in her entire existence. “Freddie is gone. I don’t want my son to be another Freddie. I cannot afford it,” she told the reporters who filmed her pounding her son away from the protest site. How do things change even when you have an African American for the President of your country, when the ground reality continues unchanged, and unchallenged?<br />
<br />
Experts and political analysts have been trying to understand this prejudice and stigma associated with racism. While many sectors are engaged in promoting social equality of all races and people who have different skin colour, that racism is still a harmful and detrimental practice, is an evident factor.<br />
<br />
The aspects that play a role in building up racism in real life may be many – such as self-esteem, positive distinct, survival and dominance, among many; the social and political aspects are rather very different from the ones listed.<br />
<br />
Racism is a political statement often, which cries for attention and protection. It is not enough for America to feel glad that they have a man at the top to prove they are not racists. Now, that would be called tokenism and camouflage, if Obama on top can stand testimony of tolerance and equal rights to live in America, irrespective of the skin colour.<br />
<br />
Racism is about paying attention to the aspects of micro entities, and addressing them. It is not enough to make a law about anti-racist stances and forget about it when incidents that speak loudly of racism happen. Whether it is Ferguson or Baltimore, time has come for America to understand there is a problem at hand. And, this cannot be sorted out by feeling proud about Statue of Liberty alone. It is time the light from her torch, shone on America’s streets too, equally and equivocally.<br />

Baltimore Riots: American dream gone awry

Unfortunately for the many fans who absolutely hate this guy, he survives this time.</p><p>But like us all, the time will eventually come for the hot-headed knight. Here's how he might die in the show if it follows the source material provided by George R. R. Martin's book "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/house-of-the-dragon-changes-viserys-description-fire-and-blood-2022-9">Fire and Blood</a>."</p><h2 id="ac237a9d-4cdb-42ac-a89c-7f23b9cafc7f">Criston is almost dragon chow in 'House of the Dragon' season 2, episode 3</h2><p>In the latest episode of the season, which aired Sunday, Criston is sent to Harrenhal in an attempt to take the Riverlands for the greens, the group backing Aegon II Targaryen as king. But while journeying with Alicent's brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), the Hand of the King sees a dragon rider high up in the clouds.</p><p>Since he and the rest of the knights all wear shiny silver armor, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/house-of-the-dragon-targaryen-kid-guide-photos-jace-aegon">Baela Targaryen</a> (Bethany Antonia) and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-targaryen-dragons-house-of-the-dragon-2022-9">her dragon Moondancer</a>, also spot them on the ground — leading to a pulse-pounding chase across the Westerosi countryside.</p><p>Fortunately for Cole, they all make it into the cover of the nearby woodland, and they're not turned into a dragon snack because Moondancer can't get in between the trees.</p><h2 id="df6f0d84-33e2-4c99-81df-17030d5582ff">According to the book, Criston ultimately gets killed in a battle called the "Butcher's Ball"</h2><p>In "Fire and Blood," Cole survives the Targaryen civil war until a battle known as the "Butcher's Ball." The green army gets ambushed south of the Gods Eye, the biggest lake in the seven kingdoms.</p><p>He tries to organize some sort of agreement with the blacks by offering his surrender to Ser Garibald Grey, Ser Pate of Longlead, and Lord Roderick Dustin, but they refuse. Cole is killed by nearby archers when he tries to fight all three of the knights at once.</p><p>He handled the conflict nearly as well as he handled his weird love triangle with Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/olivia-cooke-hysterical-playing-grandmother-house-of-the-dragon-2024-6">Alicent Hightower</a> (Olivia Cooke). Which is to say, poorly.</p><p>To add insult to injury, Grey and Pate mount Criston's head on a spear and take it with them to another battle as a show of strength.</p><p>It's the type of brutal death that "Game of Thrones" became infamous for. Just recall the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-red-wedding-shooting-2017-6">Red Wedding,</a> the penultimate episode of season three, which saw House Tully butcher Robb Stark (Richard Madden), his mother Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), his new bride Talisa (Oona Chaplin), and his army.</p><p>But the Targaryen civil war, dubbed the "Dance of Dragons," is only just starting to escalate at the start of season two. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Commenters have argued that Baltimore has long been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/these-maps-show-the-depth-of-baltimores-inequality-problem-2015-4">plagued with serious socioeconomic problems</a>, and that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/theres-another-reason-why-freddie-grays-baltimore-neighborhood-is-so-angry-2015-4">these fed into the rage that boiled over in recent days</a> in the wake of the death of Freddie Grey after sustaining injuries while in police custody.</p><p>But Baltimore isn't alone in having a pattern of racial and economic segregation. We examined the data and found that many big US cities, like Baltimore, are riddled with poor, mostly minority neighborhoods.</p><p>We reviewed <a href="https://www.census.gov/geo/reference/gtc/gtc_bg.html">block group-level</a> data on race and income from the US Census Bureau's 2009-2013 <a href="http://www.census.gov/acs/www/">American Community Survey</a> estimates. We broke down neighborhoods into three categories based on the racial makeup of those neighborhoods: majority-minority block groups with fewer than one-third of residents self-identifying as non-Hispanic white, somewhat racially balanced block groups with non-Hispanic whites making up between one-third and two-thirds of the population, and majority-white block groups with over two-thirds of the population identifying as non-Hispanic white.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Similarly, we classified neighborhoods as being low, medium, or high income, relative to the median income for the city or metro area as a whole. A block group where the median household income was less than 50% of the overall city's median income was considered low income, a block group with a median income between 50% and 150% of the overall median was middle-income, and a block group with median income above 150% of the overall city's median was high income.</span></p><p>Looking at these two characteristics, we then were <a href="http://www.joshuastevens.net/cartography/make-a-bivariate-choropleth-map/">able to classify a city's neighborhoods on both minority population and income level into one of nine overall categories</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Fairfield County, Connecticut, is a ritzy NYC suburb known for hedge funds and shoreline mansions. </li><li>The government cut it from a list of "high-cost areas" that helps homebuyers get larger mortgages.</li></ul><p>US home prices have soared over the past year with the notable exception of one of the nation's most exclusive addresses — at least, according to one government calculation.</p><p>Fairfield County, Connecticut, New York City's ritziest suburban enclave, barely saw any home-price gains in the year through September, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency. The county's housing lagged behind the rest of the nation so much that it's going to lose the government's "high-cost area" designation that helps give local buyers access to the larger mortgages needed to buy an expensive, but typical home.</p><p>The shift is especially surprising given the county is home to towns like Darien, Westport, and Greenwich, the hedge-fund capital of the world. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/forbes-richest-2022-ct-17473008.php">Steven Cohen,</a> a hedge-fund billionaire and the owner of the New York Mets, lives there, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ctinsider.com/realestate/article/celebrity-real-estate-connecticut-2022-17620636.php">as do celebrities</a> such as Shonda Rhimes, the Emmy award-winning producer of "Grey's Anatomy," "Bridgerton," and "Inventing Anna." The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/fairfieldcountyconnecticut,CT/PST045221"><u>county's median household income</u></a> of $101,194 tops <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2022/demo/p60-276.html"><u>the overall median income in the US</u></a> — $70,784 — by a large margin.</p><p>"I'm actually taken aback," Jonathan Miller, a housing expert and the author of the "Elliman Report," which covers Fairfield County along with two dozen other popular real-estate markets across seven states, told Insider as he learned the county was losing the high-cost designation.</p><h2><strong>FHFA: This is a result of rapid price growth nationally this year</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The Fairfield County home of Andrew Hall, a hedge-fund manager, in 2009. " height="2251" width="3000" msid="96134212" hostid="261" sizebytes="794716"></div><p>The change came about in the<strong> </strong>FHFA's annual examination,<strong> </strong>which oversees a law governing the size of mortgages eligible for purchase by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored enterprises that exist to boost homeownership and affordable rental housing.</p><p>In regions deemed "high-cost," the government gives these enterprises the right to buy loans larger than they normally would for most of the nation because homes in these regions are more expensive. "Conforming" loans eligible for purchase by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac typically have better terms than other loans, in part because the lender has a prearranged buyer for the debt.</p><p>According to the FHFA, the high-cost areas are where 115% of the median home price exceeds the base conforming-loan limit for most of the country.</p><p>Like most places this year through September, Fairfield County — which is situated along the Long Island Sound about 50 miles north of New York City and sometimes known as the Gold Coast — saw rising home prices. The median sales price climbed to $615,000, up from $605,000, according to the FHFA.</p><p>But the 1.65% increase was so small that 115% of the<strong> </strong>median is $707,250, below the 2023 base conforming-loan limit of $726,200, per the FHFA. Nationally, home prices increased by 12.2% in the same period.</p><p>To be sure, other data suggests greater local-home price appreciation. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://millersamuel.com/files/2022/10/Fairfield-Q3_2022.pdf">Data from Douglas Elliman</a> shows Fairfield County's median sale price rose by 8.2% year-over-year through September, for example.</p><h2><strong>It could be harder for homebuyers to score a big mortgage here next year as a result</strong></h2><p>To analysts at the FHFA, an expensive region losing its high-cost status is not uncommon. But Fairfield was the only county in the US affected in that way this time, and the change may put locals at a disadvantage when it comes to getting mortgages for higher-priced properties.</p><div type="image" title="A beach on the Long Island Sound in Fairfield, Connecticut." height="1500" width="2000" msid="96134214" hostid="261" sizebytes="786404"></div><p>According to the FHFA, prices rose so much in other coastal areas like California and the Washington, DC, region that the conforming-loan limit in those high-cost areas <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/government-entities-buy-million-dollar-mortgages-2023-2022-11">could climb to $1.06 million in 2023</a> — breaking the $1 million mark for the first time — from $970,800 in 2022.</p><p>With Fairfield County no longer a high-cost area, borrowers there will be limited in 2023 to the base conforming-loan size if they don't want to take out a larger "jumbo," or other type of loan, from a bank. In 2022, with high-cost status, the county's limit has been significantly higher, at $970,000.</p><p>On the surface, the change is perplexing, according to Miller, who said his data shows the county's average sale price last quarter was its third-highest in history.</p><p>"Fairfield County has been one of the more robust-performing regions of the New York City metro area," Miller said.</p>

Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) is autistic, something that in the show lends him preternatural medical abilities in a way that plays into the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/dec/17/rain-man-myth-autistic-people-dustin-hoffman-savant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">autistic savant trope</a>.</p><p>Here's how "The Good Doctor" went viral, renewing a wave of discussion about the show's representation of autism.</p><h2><strong>Clips from the show first started trending on TikTok and Twitter in late April and early May</strong></h2><p>It's not atypical for seemingly random movies and TV shows to go viral thanks to TikTok. <a href="https://www.polygon.com/23716196/tiktok-movie-clips-turning-red-sully-arrival-streaming" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a><a href="https://www.polygon.com/23716196/tiktok-movie-clips-turning-red-sully-arrival-streaming" target="_blank" rel="noopener">As Polygon recently reported</a>, there's an entire corner of the social-media platform that's dedicated to reuploading movie and TV clips, often with little to no context. "The Good Doctor" is one of those shows that gets punted onto TikTok in chopped up little pieces that <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@strongmovie1/video/7228308129879133486?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not-infrequently</a> <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@strongmovie1/video/7228715808719916330?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">amass</a> <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@hnjiaajuz14/video/7224840102386683178?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">millions</a> <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@flcnvgnuu75/video/7215372127216667947?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">of views</a>, often because they're just goofy.</p><p>In late April, the show seemingly broke out of its containment corner on the app, mostly through a clip showing Murphy repeatedly insisting to Daniel Dae Kim's character Dr. Han that he is a surgeon. </p> <p>The sequence is from season two, episode 17 of the show and went viral several times on TikTok in April — first in an <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@alilson_m/video/7224314247906397467" target="_blank" rel="noopener">April 20 post by the user @alilson_m</a> that has 19.3 million views to date, and again in an <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@hnjiaajuz14/video/7224840102386683178?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">April 22 post by user @hnjiaaju14</a>, whose video has approximately 20.5 million views to date (both accounts are essentially clip repositories for shows like "The Good Doctor" and "Grey's Anatomy").  </p><p>On @hnjiauuju14's post, the comments take a rather sardonic turn. </p><p>"Me when I am a surgeon," one comment from early May reads. "I think he's a surgeon," another reads. "Bro is possibly a surgeon," another says.</p><p>Meme parodies and edits of the sequence that <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ash0le32/video/7229549577043496235?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warp Highmore's voice in a helium-pitched earsore and add lasers to Kim's eyes</a> proliferated on TikTok. <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@shane_is_dead/video/7230987339340909866?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Other edits of fish clips</a> imagined that Highmore was saying "I am a sturgeon," rather than "surgeon."</p> <p>Another clip from the show has been circulating online, showing Murphy repeatedly misgendering a transgender patient. After the clip was <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@xiaoshuai057/video/7225998756368370986" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uploaded to TikTok on April 25 by TikTok user @xiaoshuai057</a>, it was reuploaded to Twitter by several accounts who <a href="https://twitter.com/ElijahSchaffer/status/1651187301576495104?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made additional transphobic statements</a> or <a href="https://twitter.com/CatchUpFeed/status/1651193978191245312" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sided with Murphy misgendering the patient.</a> </p><h2><strong>The virality of 'I am a surgeon' generated an ironic fandom for Dr. Han, and renewed criticism of the show's representation of autism </strong></h2><p>On May 6, film writer Guy Dolbey reposted @hnjiaajuz14's upload of the clip onto Twitter, where it's since been viewed approximately 8.9 million times by users on the platform. The Twitter upload, in turn sparked further memes and reactions — and criticism as well. <strong> </strong></p><p>After the "I am a surgeon" clip spread to Twitter, memes about Dr. Han began to abound. People enthusiastically praising Dr. Han, or making memes about him, became an ironic type of fandom.</p><p>Eventually, "The Good Doctor" memes were distilled into a singular conflict: Surgeon vs. Han, which was applied to other clips from the show. </p><p>The "I am a surgeon" memes also collided with discussions about the separate clip of the transgender child on the show, with one person reposting @CatchUpFeed's upload of it with the caption, "SURGEON NO!"</p><p>As memes about "The Good Doctor" spun out of control, with users sharing other absurd snippets from the series, others raised criticism — and cracked jokes — about the way that the show represents people with autism.</p><p>That criticism isn't new. In 2018, a <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/why-good-doctor-is-bad-medicine-autism-1098809/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">group of three doctors wrote in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter</a> that the show continued a trend in portraying autism as a kind of "superpower," predominantly through white, male genius characters like the titular doctor. In the process, it leaves behind people with autism who don't match that depiction, they argued.</p><p>And amid the resurgent criticism, Sara Luterman, a caregiving reporter at The 19th who <a href="https://slate.com/arts/2017/12/with-the-good-doctor-autistic-protagonists-finally-have-the-freedom-to-be-jerks.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote about the show for Slate in 2017</a>, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/05/11/good-doctor-memes-autism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Washington Post in May </a>that while she felt positive about the show when it premiered, she's since realized that there are other series with "better, fuller, more realistic shows of autistic people in them."</p><p>On Twitter, some shared clips mocking the way that "The Good Doctor" depicted Murphy's autism, with one person referring to the dramatized way graphics and medical information surround him as he thinks as Murphy's "autism powers."</p><p>Others pointed out the <a href="https://twitter.com/sitcomabed/status/1656268655393423360?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">show's association with Autism Speaks</a>, an organization that's been criticized for <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/02/14/biggest-autism-advocacy-group-is-still-failing-too-many-autistic-people/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">perpetuating harmful narratives about autistic people</a> and <a href="https://autisticadvocacy.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/AutismSpeaksFlyer2022.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">failing to adequately serve or represent them.</a> Many <a href="https://twitter.com/LakesOfLotus/status/1656681868362915842?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised concerns</a> about the fact that Highmore, the actor who plays Dr. Murphy, does not have autism. </p><p>While "The Good Doctor" has been on for years, this particular viral moment seemed to signify a whole swathe of people online becoming aware of network television, <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2023/05/the-good-doctor-im-a-surgeon-dr-han-meme-explained.html">as Bethy Squires wrote for Vulture</a>. And while the memes have died down, "The Good Doctor" will keep chugging on — <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/the-good-doctor-renewed-season-7-abc-1235589022/">for at least a seventh season,</a> and maybe more. </p><p>An ABC representative did not respond to Insider's request for comment. </p>
