Why Spa-Francorchamps remains one of the world's most dangerous race tracks

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6367522" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="belgium">Belgium</keyword>'s <a href="https://www.spa-francorchamps.be/en">Spa-Francorchamps</a> continues to be one of the world's most dangerous race tracks</li><li>Since 1922, the legendary Belgian road course has been the ultimate test for racers, having claimed the lives of almost 50 competitors.</li><li>Sébastien Buemi, four-time winner of the 6 Hours of <keyword id="5680" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="spa">Spa</keyword>, takes us <keyword id="1601253" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Turn-by-turn">turn by turn</keyword> through the track to show us just what makes Spa so dangerous.</li></ul><ul class="summary-list"></ul><p><em style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times, sans-serif;">Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p><strong>Sébastien Buemi:</strong> As you grow up you always dream of <keyword id="6360432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="RACING">racing</keyword> in Spa. It's a mix of old school corners, dangerous and fast sections.</p><p>Hi everyone, my name is Sébastien Buemi and I'm racing for Toyota Gazoo in the <keyword id="180232" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="WEC">WEC</keyword> Championship. And I'm here to take you turn by turn through Spa-Francorchamps.</p><p>So basically here we are, starting a lap of Spa-Francorchamps, getting into Turn 1, La Source corner. This corner is very important just because you have a long straight and Radillon following. You make more lap time by making sure you get a good exit and clip the apex and try to dive in and carry a lot of speed. So the exit is really important.</p><p>So you're going down to Eau Rouge. You feel all the power from the car coming in. Eau Rouge/Radillon remains still quite dangerous just because of the speed you get there and the runoff is not very big. It's really the most dangerous section definitely. The biggest thing is what car you are driving around Spa. If you are driving a Formula 1 car, it's like a straight line. You can basically do it flat. With the Toyota car, it's a corner. It's not easy, just because you have nearly the speed of a Formula 1 car, but you have the weight and the down force of a WEC car.</p><p>And I think what makes it special is, in general, the elevation. It's like a big wall, you arrive there with a lot of speed, and at some point you are blind. So all those small details makes it, I would say, special. If you turn a tiny bit too late, or too early, you can have a big crash. So how you position the car going into corner is very crucial, just because you cannot afford any mistakes if you want to stay flat and carry the speed. You need to touch the first apex a tiny bit, then you obviously try to be very smooth with the steering, and then you cut a little bit on the exit curb on top of Eau Rouge, just to try to straight line as much as you can.</p><p>We're going up the straight here. It's a pretty long straight. It's where we reach the highest speed in the LMP car, 315 kph. It's going uphill quite a lot. People don't really notice that on TV.</p><p>And then you basically brake at the start for this section: Turn 5, 6 and 7. What you do entering the section has a domino effect until you exit. If you, again, don't enter exactly with the right speed and the right line, you drift away all corners. Positioning is very tricky and you need to make sure you prepare the exit of Turn 7 well because then you have a long straight going into Turn 8. It's a pretty big place where you can lose time.</p><p>So basically we are approaching Turn 8. And here this Turn 8 is a pretty tricky one because you need to enter very early, and you need to make sure you keep the inside as much as you can otherwise you'll make too many meters, you drive too much, you don't have enough time to prepare the next corner. You try to accelerate straight, and then you try to position directly the car for Turn 9. Most likely you're gonna use all the exit curb out of Turn 9 just to make sure you carry the speed out of that corner.</p><p>So then we go down to Turn 10. It's one of the nicest corners of the track. It's Pouhon. You basically arrive in sixth gear and it's a very quick left-hander. You try to keep inside, and then you open a little, touch the outside curb, but not too much. If you touch it too much, you can drift completely out of the track. So it's really important there to turn at the right time, and have a lot of front end, otherwise, you don't carry the speed.</p><p>And then you basically arrive in one of the chicanes: 12, 13. Again, here positioning is very important because you wanna be very close to the inside curb, but not touch it too much. Otherwise, you upset the car, and it's not very nice. This chicane is just about trying to keep the speed and not do too many meters.</p><p>And then we arrive in one of the most important corners. Similar to La Source, this Turn 14 is very important because the exit, once you go back on power there, you stay flat out until the last chicane. So this Turn 14 you try to use all of the outside curb. You try to be very smooth on the steering. You do Turn 15 flat out, and then you stay flat. And you just try to focus on your up shift, make sure you don't up shift too early or too late.</p><p>And now we are already in Blanchimont. Blanchimont is not really a corner anymore for us. Even on the wet, it's nearly flat. You just stay flat, try to not upset the car, carry the speed, and then focus to brake into the last chicane.</p><p>Then we arrive in the final section of the track which is Turn 18 and 19. Not easy to brake. It's quite bumpy when you brake, and you try to slow down the car as much as you can. It's quite narrow and quite tight, so you have to use first gear. And, again, here the most important is to prepare quite well just to make sure you have a good exit. Because here you'll feel all the electric power plus the combustion engine. So you have 1,000 horsepower, and it's very easy to lose traction. So you try to accelerate straight, not touch too much the curb. And then that's it, we've done a lap of Spa-Francorchamps.</p><p>I think that Spa is a bit special for every driver. Today, on those new tracks, you have massive runoffs, and it doesn't feel so natural, where Spa is flowing, and it's fast, and it's dangerous, and it has all the things that you want to have to have such a great track. Ever since the 1999 San Marino Grand Prix, the 52-year-old German driver has been behind the wheel of the Formula 1 safety car, leading the pack safely around the track after a crash or incident.</p><p>His longevity in the role has surprised even him.</p><p>"I certainly didn't expect 24 years ago that I'd still be doing this," Mayländer said with a laugh. "But I'm still enjoying it and didn't think time would go by so quickly. Just to be a little part of this great sport — it's amazing."</p><p>The safety car plays a major role in today's F1. When an accident or crash happens, or if weather conditions get particularly bad, the safety car is sent out and all competitors must slow down and follow it. Driving at a reasonable pace, Mayländer guides the Formula 1 cars slowly around the course, ensuring that track marshals can remove debris and the medical team can tend to injured drivers.</p><p>But the safety car dates to long before Mayländer's involvement. In fact, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first deployment of a safety car in F1.</p><p>Business Insider chatted with Mayländer about the history of the F1 safety car and some of his most memorable moments in the sport.</p><div type="image" title="A yellow Porsche 914" height="4318" width="5904" msid="105479258" hostid="261" sizebytes="1125178"></div><h2>A rocky start</h2><p>The first F1 safety car was a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fia.com/news/fia-insights-celebrating-50-years-fia-safety-car-formula-1">lemon-yellow</a>" Porsche 914, and it made its debut at the rain-soaked 1973 Canadian Grand Prix. It was a far cry from the kind of sports cars used today. A rear engine provided the tiny car with about 80 horsepower.</p><p>"I wasn't watching TV at the time because maybe I was too young," Mayländer said. "But I do remember seeing pictures of it — still a phenomenal car."</p><p>The safety car, then referred to as the "pace-car control system," went through just one test before its debut at the '73 race. Its deployment caused a fair bit of <a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/rnDAXHy4UD4?si=bEPUprbBQhZ6tRkj">confusion</a>. Some racers were unsure whether to line up behind it, and the results of that race would later be disputed because of the mishap.</p><h2>A variety of suppliers</h2><div type="image" title="The Formula 1 safety car, a Renault Clio, at the 1996 Argentine Grand Prix" height="943" width="1885" msid="105479260" hostid="261" sizebytes="98844"></div><p>In the years following its debut, the safety car bounced around between various manufacturers and was not a constant presence at races until the '90s. Notable safety cars included a Lamborghini Countach, deployed for several years in the early '80s in Monaco, a Fiat Tempra, and a Renault Clio.</p><p>Of all these old safety cars, Mayländer pointed to the Lamborghini as one he wished he could have driven.</p><p>"I've never driven a Lamborghini in my life," he said. "And the Countach, that was something very special."</p><h2>Standardizing the process</h2><p>Toward the end of the '96 season, the International Automobile Federation made moves to formalize the safety-car process. Mercedes became the official safety-car supplier with its C36 AMG model, and the British driver Oliver Gavin was named the first permanent driver of the safety car.</p><div type="image" title="The Formula 1 safety car in the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix" height="1194" width="1903" msid="105479263" hostid="261" sizebytes="294594"></div><h2>Bernd Mayländer makes his safety-car debut</h2><p>Mayländer's first time behind the wheel of the safety car came at the '99 San Marino Grand Prix, driving a Mercedes CLK 55 AMG.</p><p>"I remember everything from that first race weekend," he said. "I was nervous, just a young race driver at the time, thrust into this Formula 1 role."</p><div type="image" title="F1 safety driver Bernd Mayländer puts on his helmet at the 2007 European Grand Prix" height="4000" width="6000" msid="105479267" hostid="261" sizebytes="822924"></div><p>Today, Mayländer has multiple TV screens and monitors in his car to follow the action, but that wasn't the case in '99.</p><p>"We had a hand radio when we started — and that was it," he said.</p><h2>The longest race</h2><p>One of the wildest races Mayländer recalled was the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix — a rainy event that saw record use of the safety car (which led the pack for roughly 45% of the race).</p><p>"It was the longest Formula 1 race ever, if you count the red flags," Mayländer said. "We had to stop twice to refuel the safety car. So even for me, that was a proper race, driving nearly 150 kilometers."</p><div type="image" title="F1 cars in wet conditions during the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix" height="3956" width="6000" msid="105479270" hostid="261" sizebytes="1167318"></div><p>The British driver Jenson Button of McLaren ultimately won in dramatic fashion, clawing back from last place to first after five pit stops — the most ever by a race winner.</p><p>"That was a special one," Mayländer said.</p><h2>Abu Dhabi controversy</h2><p>One of the most notable safety-car moments in recent memory was <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.insider.com/lap-by-lap-breakdown-f1-2021-season-finale-max-verstappen-2021-12">the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix</a>, which decided that year's World Drivers' Championship. The safety car was deployed after a late crash — but instead of ending the race under caution, race control controversially called to resume with just one lap to go, allowing Max Verstappen, on fresh tires, to pass Lewis Hamilton <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTe12fH2xtQ&amp;ab_channel=FORMULA1">for the win and championship title</a>.</p><div type="image" title="The F1 safety car in front of Mercedes British driver Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix" height="1410" width="2610" msid="105479272" hostid="261" sizebytes="177360"></div><p>"For sure, that was a big race, but I treated it like a normal situation," Mayländer said. "It was just another procedure, and obviously what happened afterwards was outside of my job. It doesn't matter who is world champion — for me, just do your job, do as good as possible, full stop."</p><h2>It's more than just driving a car</h2><p>Mayländer does much more than just set the pace after an accident. He notifies race control of any debris on the track and, during rainy conditions, reports on surface conditions and whether there's standing water anywhere on the circuit.</p><p>Fans at home often hear F1 drivers complaining on their team radios that Mayländer should drive faster so that they can keep their tires warm. In fact, drivers in the lead will often inch up as close behind Mayländer as possible to try and speed him along, though the affable German pays it no mind.</p><p>"It's a game, and I know the drivers want to keep the performance in their tires," he said. "I'd do the same if I were in their position. But for me, it makes no difference — I'm there for safety."</p><div type="image" title="Formula 1 safety car driver Bernd Mayländer" height="3200" width="4800" msid="105479273" hostid="261" sizebytes="418112"></div><h2>Today's safety cars</h2><p>In today's F1, the safety car alternates between a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series and an Aston Martin Vantage. Both cars have V8 engines, about 730 horsepower, and can reach nearly 200 mph.</p><p>"Formula 1 is always evolving and developing, and so, too, is the safety car," Mayländer said.</p><div type="image" title="The F1 safety car drives in front of Red Bull Racing's Mexican driver Sergio Perez during the 2023 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix" height="4000" width="6000" msid="105479275" hostid="261" sizebytes="905044"></div><p>"These are real race cars — the downforce and everything," Mayländer, who in the '90s was an accomplished endurance racer, said. "It's quite nice to have two suppliers now working together. I enjoy learning how to drive these wonderful cars. Even at my age, I never stop learning."</p><p>On a typical race weekend, Mayländer will log hours of practice time driving the track, making sure he understands all the braking points. He considers old-school tracks, such as Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Suzuka International Racing Course in Japan, among his favorites.</p><p>"I really love them all, though," he added. "All the circuits have special characteristics."</p>

How the F1 safety car has evolved since 1973 — from Porsche 914 to Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Alfa Romeo's <keyword id="11962825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kimi-rikknen" source="Orion">Kimi Räikkönen</keyword> crashed into the pit lane wall as <keyword id="11953261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="f1" source="Orion">F1</keyword> returned from its summer break.</li><li>The Finnish driver, who is known as the Iceman, said: "Oh, s---," after the crash.</li><li>Räikkönen is the most experienced driver in F1 having entered 344 Grands Prix.</li></ul><p>The most experienced driver in <keyword id="11953260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="formula-one" source="Orion">Formula One</keyword> history crashed into a wall on the way into the pits as the sport returned from a summer break.</p><p>During the first practice session Friday at the Belgian Grand Prix, Alfa Romeo's Kimi Räikkönen clipped his left front wheel on the wall.</p><p>The car skid across the pit lane entry as it narrowly avoided making further contact with the wall and causing more damage.</p><p>Over the team radio, the Finnish driver was heard saying: "Oh, s---," after the crash, and said he was not sure how much damage he had caused to the front wing.</p><p>Räikkönen is the most experienced driver on the grid having entered 344 Grands Prix, 17 more than any other driver.</p><p>The 41-year-old crashed during the first practise session of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.</p><p>It is the first Grand Prix after the sport's summer break with the drivers having last raced in Hungary on August 1.</p>

F1's most experienced driver crashed into a wall as the motorsport returns from its summer break

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Belgian Grand Prix was ruined by rain. Only two laps, both behind a safety car, were completed.</li><li><keyword id="11953263" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="max-verstappen" source="Orion">Max Verstappen</keyword>, who started on pole, was declared the race winner and given 12.5 points.</li><li>George Russell earned the first podium of his <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/formula-one">F1</a> career after a strong qualifying performance.</li></ul><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/formula-one">Formula One</a> Belgian Grand Prix was decimated by rain on a farcical day that saw the only action coming from behind a safety car.</p><p>With the race due to begin at 3 p.m. local time Sunday, the drivers did not take to the track until almost three hours later as the rain soaked the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/category/max-verstappen">Max Verstappen</a>, who earned pole position Saturday, led the drivers out behind the safety car but rain continued to fall as the convoy completed two laps - the minimum required for a race to be declared as finished, before the red flag was shown.</p><p>As the teams made their way to the grid for the original start time, conditions grew much worse than the previous day and the start was delayed by 20 minutes while the race stewards studied the weather forecasts. The radar did not make for positive readings and the first of many red flags was shown.</p><p>While the drivers tried to entertain themselves - <a href="https://twitter.com/F1/status/1431997428547338241">including McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo who orchestrated a Mexican wave</a> - the <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/red-bull-racing">Red Bull</a> engineers worked hard on Sergio Perez's car who crashed during one of the warm-up laps.</p><p>The long delay meant they were able to fix the Mexican's car and as the race had not yet officially started, Perez was allowed to start from the back of the pit lane.</p><p>As less than 75 percent of the race was completed, half points were awarded meaning Max Verstappen cut the gap between himself and championship leader <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/lewis-hamilton">Lewis Hamilton</a> to three points.</p><h3>George Russell was rewarded for fine qualifying performance</h3><div type="image" title="George Russell celebrates after the Belgian Grand Prix" height="2672" width="3562" msid="85792394" hostid="261"></div><p>The man nicknamed "Mr. Saturday" finally got his reward for a strong qualifying performance as George Russell earned the first podium of his career.</p><p>Competing in his 50th race, the Williams driver put in a remarkable lap during the final qualifying session to finish quicker than <keyword id="11953262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lewis-hamilton" source="Orion">Lewis Hamilton</keyword>, and earn himself second place on the grid.</p><p>With no chance for an overtake, Russell, who was driving a much less powerful Williams car, did not have to defend and was awarded nine points for his effort.</p><p>Elsewhere, Haas' Nikita Mazepin earned the fastest lap award but as he did not finish in the top 10, he was not awarded the one extra point.</p><p>The Belgian Grand Prix is the first of a triple header with the drivers and teams reconvening for the Dutch Grand Prix. on September 5.</p>

Max Verstappen won a Belgian Grand Prix that was only 2 laps long after torrential rain drenched the track

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Seven-time world champ <keyword id="11953262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lewis-hamilton" source="Orion">Lewis Hamilton</keyword> accused <keyword id="11953261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="f1" source="Orion">F1</keyword> organizers of being greedy.</li><li>Following heavy rain, only two laps were completed before Max Verstappen was declared the winner.</li><li>Hamilton said "money talks," and that fans, who stayed despite poor conditions, deserved a refund.</li></ul><p>Current Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has accused the sport's organizers of being greedy, and said "money talks" <a href="https://www.insider.com/belgian-grand-prix-ends-max-verstappen-victor-after-two-laps-2021-8">following a farcical Belgian Grand Prix.</a></p><p>Consistent heavy rain meant it was never possible for the race to safely get underway, and after a wait of more than three hours past the scheduled start time, the drivers followed the safety car around the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for two laps before the race was declared finished.</p><p>Max Verstappen, who led having secured pole position during Saturday's qualifying session, was declared the winner and cut the gap between himself and current leader Hamilton to three points in the drivers' standings.</p><div type="image" title="Max Verstappen drives behind the safety car during a wet Belgian Grand Prix" height="3350" width="4467" msid="85798161" hostid="261"></div><p>Afterward, Hamilton <a href="https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12526/12394837/belgian-gp-lewis-hamilton-claims-money-talks-after-two-laps-before-final-red-flag">told Sky Sports F1</a> that "money talks."</p><p>"It was literally the two laps to start the race, it's all a money scenario," he said. "So everyone gets their money and I think the fans should get theirs back too because unfortunately, they didn't get to see what they came and paid for.</p><p>"It's a shame we can't do the race tomorrow [Monday] and I love this track as well, so sad that we couldn't do this. But today wasn't a race," he said.</p><p>Regulations state that two laps is the minimum needed for the event to be declared a race and drivers were awarded half points as less than 75 percent was completed. </p><div type="image" title="A technical vehicle clears water from the track as the race is suspended over rainy weather during the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit" height="2430" width="3241" msid="85798163" hostid="261"></div><p>Hamilton's speculation that the real motive behind the two laps was commercially driven prompted the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to <a href="https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12526/12394837/belgian-gp-lewis-hamilton-claims-money-talks-after-two-laps-before-final-red-flag">speak to Sky Sports F1.</a></p><p>Race director Michael Masi told the broadcasters that from looking at their weather forecasts, they saw a window of opportunity which they thought they could race in.</p><p>"We are in constant contact with our official weather provider and there was a window it looked like it was provided there.</p><p>"We have got the requirement to give a 10-minute warning to everyone so it was like 'OK, let's try to see if we can find that window'.</p><p>"A number of the teams have said the same thing, they saw that window and could see exactly what we were trying to do. Then the weather came in and got the better of us again."</p><p>F1 president Stefano Domenicali also denied there was no commercial element in the call to return to the track.</p><p>"There was really the will to do the race but the problem is that the weather started to be even worse and with the comments that the race control was receiving it was really wrong to keep on doing that.</p><p>"So it's not really commercial, I can guarantee you."</p><p>Whilst neglecting to say whether fans will get their money back, Domenicali said that fans were a "priority" and they "will take care about this."</p>

Lewis Hamilton accused F1 bosses of being greedy following a farcical Grand Prix which lasted 2 laps

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Formula One will crisscross the globe in 2015, with 20 races on five continents over an eight-month season. </p><p>A total of 10 teams and 20 drivers  will compete on a variety of challenging courses that range from the streets of Monaco to the mountainous terrain of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, from long straits of Abu Dhabi to the rolling hills of Austin, Texas.</p><p>Defending champion Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes-AMG teammate Nico Rosberg look to be the duo to beat once again. Ferrari has rearmed after a disappointing 2014 season by replacing two-time-world champion Fernando Alonso with <em>four-time</em> world champ Sebastian Vettel.</p><p>Historically weaker teams, such as Manor, Sauber, and Lotus, will look to improve upon poor performances in 2014.</p><p>The 2015 F1 season kick off on March 15, at Albert's Park in Melbourne, Australia with the Australian Grand Prix.</p>

<p>GRENOBLE, France (Reuters) - The medical condition of seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is slightly better on Tuesday following a second operation during the night to treat head injuries he sustained in a skiing accident, doctors said.</p>
<p>"The situation is more under control than yesterday but we cannot say he is out of danger," Jean-Francois Payen, head anaesthetician told a news conference at the CHU hospital in the eastern French city of Grenoble.</p>
<p>"We have won some time but we must continue an hour-by-hour surveillance... It is premature to speculate on his condition," he said, adding that it could still be qualified as "critical".</p>
<p>Emmanuel Gay, head of the hospital's neurosurgery service, said the operation carried out during the night involved removing a large hematoma - the medical term for a build-up of blood - from the left-hand side of Schumacher's brain.</p>
<p>"It was larger and more accessible (than others) ... We judged we could remove it without taking any risks," Gay said.</p>
<p>He said the operation was designed to reduce, within Schumacher's skull, the pressure on the brain, which suffered injuries including lesions and contusions from Sunday's fall.</p>
<p>The retired motor racing champion, 44, slammed his head on a rock while skiing off-piste on Sunday morning in the French Alpine resort of Meribel, where he has a vacation home.</p>
<p>Doctors said the fact that he was wearing a helmet had enabled him to make it to the hospital alive.</p>
<p>Payen said the medical team in Grenoble had discussed the operation with Schumacher's family. He said the condition of the German motor racing great was still too fragile to consider transferring him to another hospital for the time being.</p>

Schumacher 'Slightly Better' After Second Operation To Relieve Brain Trauma

Nissan's luxury brand is putting some distance between itself and its parent company by producing some truly premium automobiles.  </p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">With the 2014 Q50 sedan, Infinito </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/driving-the-2014-infiniti-hybrid-q50-2013-8" target="_blank">finally made a true luxury car</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, and its reputation among American consumers </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/infinit-improves-perception-but-sales-lag-2013-10" target="_blank">is improving</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p>
<p>Now if only it would put the Q50 Eau Rouge concept - the gorgeous car it unveiled this morning at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/detroit-auto-show-2014" target="_blank">Detroit Auto Show</a> - into production, things could really get cranking. </p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The car is gorgeous. More importantly, it's powerful. Or it will be, if Infiniti makes it a reality.</span></p>
<p>Which it almost certainly will, and definitely should - not just for our happiness, but for its own good. </p>
<p><span>Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen, stolen from Audi a year and a half ago, said "if we built this car," it would have over 500 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers, combined with these looks, could make the Eau Rouge a terrific performance car.</span></p>
<p><span>Infiniti says it wants to seriously compete with top tier automakers - BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus. To make that transition, it needs more products. (Right now, it has offerings for less than 60% of market segments.)</span></p>
<p><span>One of those products needs to be on the level of the BMW M3, Lexus IS F, or Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. It's not about volume of sales, it's about proving that you can make an outstanding car. It's about being taken seriously, and getting attention.</span></p>
<p>The Eau Rouge can be that car for Infiniti. The name, taken from<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> a famous curve at Belgium's </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Spa Francorchamps Formula 1 track, drives home that message. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The body is there - Infiniti's executive design director Alfonso <span>Albaisa told Business Insider it won't take much work to turn the concept into a production design.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span>De Nysschen said the key issue is finding the right engine - probably a turbocharged V6 or a naturally aspirated V8. Unfortunately, the engine that powers Nissan's terrific GT-R will be very hard to fit into a Q50-sized sedan. But the engineers can borrow a design from Daimler AG, which owns Mercedes and has a partnership with Nissan.</span></span></span></p>
<p>So enough talking. Make it happen. Then let us drive it.</p>
