They dubbed it "<a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bloop.html">the bloop</a>."</p><p>While searching for underwater volcanoes, researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded the infamous loud, ultra-low frequency sound on hydrophones. These underwater microphones <a href="https://www.pmel.noaa.gov/acoustics/sosus_gen.html">the US Navy originally developed</a> were 2,000 miles apart in the Pacific Ocean.</p><p>The sound, which lasted for about one minute, was one of the loudest underwater sounds ever recorded. After all, humans haven't explored more than <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/ocean-coasts">80% of the world's oceans</a>.</p><p>"We considered every possibility, including animal origin," Christopher Fox, chief scientist of the Acoustic Monitoring Project of NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Lab, told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jAs_u6LpcQ&amp;t=5s">The Atlantic</a> for a short film about the sound in 2017.</p><div type="image" title="An adult blue whale swimming in the eastern Pacific Ocean." height="1128" width="1792" msid="96378979" hostid="261" sizebytes="106078"></div><p>Just what created the booming noise stumped scientists for years.</p><p>It wasn't until 2005, when NOAA embarked on an acoustical survey of the Antarctic off of South America, that scientists began to understand the bloop's origins.</p><p>Robert Dziak, from NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Lab, told Insider via email that by 2011 — after gathering all the data —  the agency was able to definitively explain what the bloop was.</p><p>The official ruling: It was the sound of an icequake, created by the cracking of an ice shelf as it broke up from an Antarctic glacier.</p><p>The "sounds of ice breaking up and cracking is a dominant source of natural sound in the southern ocean," Dziak told <a href="http://www.wired.co.uk/article/bloop-mystery-not-solved-sort-of" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wired</a> in 2012. The sudden cracking produces a loud pop or booming sound. With climate change, <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bloop.html">NOAA warns</a> that icequakes are becoming more common.</p><p>Rising global temperatures melt glacial ice, creating water that can freeze again to cause an icequake.</p>

The findings suggest that as melting glaciers add vast amounts of much fresh water to the world's oceans, the current system in the Atlantic is likely to weaken over time.</p><p>This system, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), moves ocean water north and south in the Atlantic and mixes surface water with that from deep below. It's partially responsible for western Europe's warm and wet climate.</p><p>The UN report concluded that "the AMOC is projected to weaken in the 21st century" under every climate-change scenario. Hundreds of millions of people could be displaced.</a></em></p><p>"We are definitely going into a world where AMOC is getting weaker," Francesco Muschitiello, the author of a different study about the AMOC, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/day-after-tomorrow-was-right-and-wrong-about-climate-shifts-2019-3">previously told Business Insider</a>.</p><p>As that happens, Europe could get colder, drier weather, and the tropics could experience stronger hurricanes.</p><h2>Why melting glaciers and warming oceans weaken ocean currents</h2><p>Scientists liken the AMOC to a kind of water conveyor belt.</p><p>Once warmer water reaches the area around the UK, it cools and sinks to the bottom of the Labrador and Nordic Seas. Then that cold water makes a U-turn and snakes its way along the ocean floor, all the way down to Antarctica's Southern Ocean.</p><p>When the AMOC is flowing quickly, western Europe enjoys a wet and warm climate. Salty water is dense, so it sinks easily. But as Greenland and Antarctica's ice sheets melt, along with glaciers around the world, more fresh water is joining the AMOC.</p><p>That <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/greenland-approaching-threshold-of-irreversible-melting-2019-1">melting is happening quickly</a>, the UN report confirmed. Greenland's ice is melting six times faster now than it was four decades ago, according to <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2019/04/16/1904242116">an April study</a> - the ice sheet is sloughing off an estimated 286 billion tons of ice per year. In the 1980s, Antarctica lost 40 billion tons of ice annually. In the last decade, that number jumped to an average of 252 billion tons per year.</p><p>The addition of all that fresh water makes the salty surface water lighter and less likely to sink, <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/slow-motion-ocean-atlantics-circulation-is-weakest-in-1-600-years/">clogging up the circulation's flow</a> and weakening the AMOC.</p><h2>A weaker AMOC could mean more extreme weather</h2><p>The authors of the UN report, which focuses on the state of the world's oceans and cryosphere (the frozen parts of the planet) say they're somewhat confident that the AMOC has already weakened relative to the period from 1850-1900.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0007-4.epdf?author_access_token=fsib90gIobI_Agb9Y6Dv_tRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0MAQC0usmARmECubT0sv_73uaai5H7Fy0aRKV4rH49xk-nG4CZmf52MUw8oGrE-ospQrzV3yPTNbpOmvENmVJ5M7TaTsKJASsuLaOE-wy0tVw%3D%3D">a 2018 study</a>, the AMOC is the <a href="https://grist.org/article/relax-the-day-after-tomorrow-isnt-going-to-happen-like-tomorrow/">weakest it's been in at least 1,600 years</a>.</p><p>That weakening is likely to cause changes in our global climate, according to the report, including more storms in northern Europe as well as a decrease in the amount of organic matter produced and circulated in the north Atlantic's marine food web. </p><p>It would also lead to less summer rainfall in southern Asian and the central African Sahel, so parts of central and west Africa could experience more drought conditions.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/6127588860/">NASA</a></span></p><p class="caption">Four tropical cyclones, Katia, Lee, Maria and Nate, were seen in the Atlantic Ocean basin on September 8, 2011.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"We'll see more extreme weather patterns for sure," Muschitiello said. "Europe will get colder and drier in the long run. There will be surplus of heat in subtropics, which is important for hurricane formation."</p><p>When subtropical waters are warmer, that contributes to more frequent and intense hurricanes in the Atlantic, since warm air holds more water vapor - and that additional moisture <a href="https://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming/science-and-impacts/impacts/hurricanes-and-climate-change.html">provides fuel for hurricanes</a>.</p><p>A weakening in the AMOC would also cause sea levels to rise along along the northeast coast of North America.</p><h2>Could the AMOC ever stop completely?</h2><p>In the 2004 film "The Day After Tomorrow," the AMOC stops almost overnight and an ice age descends on Europe and North America. People freeze to death in the streets, helicopters fall out of the sky, and a massive tidal wave engulfs New York City.</p><p>Those effects are not scientifically accurate and were hyperbolized in the film, of course, but the idea that Atlantic water circulation could shut down isn't wholly outside the realm of possibility. It's just highly unlikely.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>20th Century Fox</span></p><p class="caption">In the 2004 movie, "The Day After Tomorrow," the AMOC shuts down completely.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>According to Muschitiello, there are "reconstructions that suggest that the AMOC stopped entirely in the past, and that these major distortions of the AMOC led to the coldest events ever recorded."</p><p>But such an occurrence would require a huge amount of melt water - the past distortions Muschitiello is referring to happened after large swarms of icebergs broke off glaciers and floated into the north Atlantic ocean. Greenhouse-gas emissions are not likely to increase that dramatically, though.</p><p>The authors of the UN report also concluded that "a collapse is very unlikely." Temperatures plummet to negative 150 degrees Fahrenheit, people freeze to death in the streets, helicopters fall out of the sky, and a massive tidal wave engulfs New York City.</p><p>Those effects (and the speed at which they occur) were hyperbolized in the film for the sake of movie-goers, but the idea that Atlantic water circulation could shut down isn't outside the realm of possibility. Their results showed that </span><span>the AMOC started weakening roughly 400 years before a major cold snap 13,000 years ago. </span><span>The AMOC also began getting stronger about 400 years before an abrupt warming 11,000 years ago (during which temperatures climbed by 14 degrees Fahrenheit).</span></p><p><span>The authors noted that following those 400-year lags, abrupt warming or cooling took place over just a few decades or less.</span></p><p>"It's insane," Muschitiello said. "If you look at the ice cores, there are some climate indicators that suggest a 2- to 5-year shift."</p><p><span>Muschitiello's research is the first to calculate how quickly a </span>change in the AMOC begets a shift in global climate.</p><p><span>But he doesn't think today's melting ice is enough to trigger the dramatic AMOC slowdown that the world saw 13,000 years ago.</span></p><p>"Nevertheless, it's really scary," he said. "You can see that the AMOC has slowed down over last couple centuries."</p><h2>Could the current ever completely stop?</h2><p>According to Muschitiello, "there are reconstructions that suggest that the AMOC stopped entirely in the past, and that these major distortions of the AMOC led to the coldest events ever recorded."</p><p>But such an occurrence would require a significant amount of melt-water. The past distortions Muschitiello is referring to happened after large <span>swarms of icebergs broke off glaciers and floated into the north Atlantic ocean. When the iceberg armadas melted, that added an excess of fresh water into the ocean, wreaking havoc on the AMOC. </span></p><p>But this kind of influx of fresh water was several orders of magnitude higher than today's melting rates.</p><p>"If the Greenland ice sheet was to melt over the course of a few days, though, that would probably be bad," Muschitiello said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty/MKnighton/Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing</span></p><p class="caption">Together with Antarctica's ice sheet, the Greenland ice sheet contains more than 99% of the world's fresh water.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Other studies over the last few years have also looked into potential effects of a weakening AMOC.</p><p><span><a href="https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/bibliography/related_files/td0802.pdf">A government report</a> suggested in 2008 that while the AMOC is clearly weakening, there's no evidence that it would abruptly collapse in the 21st century. That report noted, however, that if the AMOC did stop, it would cause almost 3 feet of additional sea-level rise.</span></p><p>A <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/1/e1601666">2017 study</a> found that if the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere instantaneously doubled from the<span> 1990 level, </span>the AMOC could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-could-shut-down-the-current-that-carries-warm-water-2017-9">collapse in 300 years</a>. But <span>it's unlikely that greenhouse-gas emissions would increase that dramatically. </span></p><h2>Higher seas and more extreme weather</h2><p><span>Even if the AMOC were to stop completely, an ice age would not spring up immediately the way it does in "The Day After Tomorrow."</span></p><p>But the weakening that's already underway is still likely to cause changes in our global climate.</p><p>"We'll see more extreme weather patterns for sure," Muschitiello said. "Europe will get colder and drier in the long run. There will be surplus of heat in subtropics, which is important for hurricane formation."</p><p>When subtropical waters are warmer, that contributes to more frequent and intense hurricanes in the Atlantic, since w<span>arm air holds more water vapor - and that additional moisture <a href="https://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming/science-and-impacts/impacts/hurricanes-and-climate-change.html">provides fuel for hurricanes</a>. </span></p><p><span>A weakening in the AMOC would also cause sea levels to rise along the US' eastern seaboard, <a href="https://grist.org/article/relax-the-day-after-tomorrow-isnt-going-to-happen-like-tomorrow/">as Grist has reported</a>. The film 'The Day After Tomorrow' foretold a real and troubling trend: The ocean's water-circulation system is weakening

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Aidan Monaghan/20th Century Fox</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Warning: Spoilers ahead</strong></p><p>Everyone went nuts over the announcement on Monday by NASA that it has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-big-announcement-about-mars-2015-9">discovered liquid saltwater</a> on the surface of Mars.</p><p>That is, everyone except filmmaker Ridley Scott. </p><p>The 77-year-old director of "The Martian" (opening Friday) told <a href="http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/artsbeat/2015/09/28/ridley-scott-learned-about-water-on-mars-before-we-did-but-not-in-time-to-change-martian/?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=tw-nytmovies&amp;smtyp=cur&amp;_r=0&amp;referer=http://t.co/HbUu03jdIF">The New York Times</a> on Monday that the head of NASA showed him the photos of water on the surface of Mars two months ago. </p><p>In "The Martian," an adaption of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Weir_(writer)">Andy Weir</a>'s book of the same name, we follow Astronaut Mark Watney as he is stranded alone on Mars and must survive on the planet until NASA can mount a rescue (which would take years).</p><p>In the film, Watney (played by Matt Damon) must not only grow food but come up with a creative way to make water.</p><p>However, Scott told the Times that if he knew of the Mars water before production began he would have changed the story.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Stuart Wilson/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Ridley Scott.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"He'd've found the edge of a glacier, definitely. It would be fascinating," said Scott. "But then I would've lost a great sequence. He has to make water, and the steaming device, and put up the plastic tents, which creates the humidity, which grows the plants, which is the most basic form of irrigation. They still do it in Spain that way."</p><p>As a major part of the movie is how Watney survives on Mars, including the Mars water in the story would have vastly changed "The Martian." Not to mention that Scott and screenwriter <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1206844/?ref_=tt_ov_wr">Drew Goddard</a> would have veered far from Weir's book.</p><p>Regardless, the new discovery shouldn't disrupt your enjoyment of the movie when you see it this weekend. A flat bear and laughing hippo.</em></p><h2><strong>"Insider Today" with Blodget and Plotz</strong></h2><h3><strong>Democrats had better make clear that they also want to reopen as soon as possible, or they'll become "the party of permanent lockdowns"</strong></h3><p>Sentiment is shifting. </p><p>After two months of lockdowns and devastating economic consequences, quarantine fatigue and frustration have set in, and more Americans want to reopen the country.</p><p>So far, the "reopeners" are still a minority — mostly Republicans, who, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/poll-as-trump-pushes-to-reopen-republican-voters-support-2020-5">Insider's Kayla Epstein reports</a>, are falling in line behind President Trump. But as it becomes clear that the US is past the peak of this first wave, and new cases and deaths decline — and the states that began reopening "too early" do not see a devastating second surge (see below) —more Americans will feel the same way.</p><p>To be clear:</p><p>The federal government and Trump administration blew the initial US response to the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>, and they still don't have a plan beyond "reopening." They downplayed the threat of the virus and failed to contain and control the outbreak when it was small. They pitted states against each other instead of leading a coordinated national response. And they failed to build an adequate national testing, tracing, quarantine, and PPE strategy during the two months of lockdown.</p><p>The choice between "the economy" and "public health," moreover, is still a false one. As the slow recovery of the economy in Georgia and other early-opening states is showing, and as at least<a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w27127"> one study has confirmed</a>, it's not the lockdowns that have obliterated our economy and jobs — it's our justifiable fear of catching and spreading the coronavirus.</p><p>But!</p><p>Trump is a brilliant marketer, and he has already seized on the message that will eclipse his mistakes and rescue his administration. </p><p>Trump's new message is that he will save us from job-losses, economic misery, and lockdowns. And, in classic Trump fashion, he is now successfully blaming those horrors on the Democrats, painting them as "the party of permanent lockdowns."</p><p>So the Democrats need to make clear that they, too, want to reopen the country as soon as possible. They also need to stress that, unlike Trump and the <keyword id="107893" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="GOP">GOP</keyword>, they have a plan to manage the risk and identify and contain any new outbreaks as they happen. </p><p>In short, the Democrats need to develop and communicate their own reopening plan. And, in the meantime, they need to advocate for <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/05/just-stay-home-message-will-backfire/611623/">a more nuanced message than "just stay home."</a>  </p><p>We know a lot more about this virus and how it spreads than we did three months ago. We know, for example, that ubiquitous mask-wearing helps and that outside activities are low risk. The Democrats need to take advantage of science and expertise and share their plan for leading us out of this hell. <em>— HB</em></p><h3><strong>The "worst fears" are not yet coming to pass. Early-opening states are still doing okay.</strong></h3><p><strong><div type="image" title="texas restaurant" height="1000" width="2000" msid="75746329" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>When states like Georgia announced plans to begin to reopen three weeks ago, the condemnation was swift.  </p><p>By reopening too early, the fear was, Georgia and other states were inviting a second surge of infections. Even President Trump said he "strongly disagreed" with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's decision, which violated Trump's own reopening guidelines.</p><p>But now we're in mid-May. And the much-feared "second surge" has not yet happened.</p><p>Georgia's <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/13/coronavirus-updates-georgia-tries-to-reopen-economy-during-pandemic.html">new daily cases have plateaued</a>. Same for<a href="https://www.axios.com/coronavirus-cases-map-high-risk-states-8ceeaa05-cc07-4e8b-b9f4-df3a3315f143.html"> Florida's</a>. And even though <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/states-reopen-map-coronavirus.html">most US states have begun to reopen</a>, the country's <a href="https://twitter.com/ScottGottliebMD/status/1260946980710350855?s=20">overall case and death counts</a> are still gradually declining, <a href="https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1260979939005861888/photo/1">even outside of New York</a>.</p><p>Yes, it's early. Most of these states — including Georgia — have not fully reopened. And most still have restrictions on businesses that have reopened.</p><p>And, yes, the analysis is complicated.</p><p>And, yes, if reducing transmission were the only consideration, we would likely do better staying closed. A deep-dive <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/05/13/whats-happening-states-that-reopened-their-economies-its-complicated/">by Philip Bump and the Washington Post </a>found that, on average, states that have remained closed have seen a sharper decline in cases than those that have begun to reopen.</p><p>But "reducing transmission" is not the only consideration. Our livelihoods, education, and mental health are also considerations. We cannot stay in hiding forever, even if quickly eliminating the virus in this country were a real possibility, which unfortunately it no longer appears to be.</p><p>By not acting aggressively and competently back in January and February, we missed our chance to "suppress" the outbreak when it was small, the way New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, and other countries have. The only strategy available to us now is "mitigation"—managing the risks and spread while we await the development of vaccines and effective treatments. </p><p>And as we seek ways to reduce restrictions without triggering a major new spike in cases, the experience of our early-opening states is encouraging. So far, anyway, we have not seen the feared spike in infections that would indicate that easing restrictions is a terrible idea.<em> — HB</em></p><h3><strong>The Wisconsin Supreme Court was right to limit the governor's emergency powers </strong></h3><p><div type="image" title="FILE - In this Dec. 4, 2019 file photo, Wisconsin Gov. (AP Photo/Scott Bauer, File)" height="3323" width="4431" msid="75746332" hostid="261"></div>With a reopen-minded Republican legislature and a cautious Democratic governor, Wisconsin is the front line of the growing partisan conflict over the pandemic. </p><p>So it's not surprising that<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/05/13/wisconsin-supreme-court-strikes-down-governors-extension-stay-at-home-order/"> yesterday's Wisconsin Supreme Court decision</a> to strike down Gov. Tony Evers extended stay-at-home order has been condemned by Democrats as partisan judicial activism. </p><p>Maybe it was: All the justices who ruled against Evers are conservative. </p><p>But seen another way, the Wisconsin Supreme Court decision is a valuable blow against the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-stocks-up-when-20-million-americans-lost-job-2020-5">creeping executive overreach</a> we see across the nation.</p><p>The court decision is complicated, but it partially hinges on the Supreme Court ruling that the emergency powers of the governor can't be extended indefinitely. In a long pandemic, the governor shouldn't be able to unilaterally extend emergency measures indefinitely, but should at some point need to consult with the legislature about the right policy. </p><p>This seems sensible. Legislators represent Wisconsin's citizens, and they are closer to on-the-ground local concerns than the governor is. In an urgent, short-term emergency — a fire, a terrorist attack — the governor should have broad power to act quickly and freely. But COVID-19 is a slow-motion steamroller of an emergency. At this point, it makes sense to expect the governor to consult widely and involve all parts of the government. </p><p>History shows us that dictatorial governments exploit emergencies — and <em>extend </em>emergencies — to give themselves special powers. We're seeing that in countries like <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/4/15/21193960/coronavirus-covid-19-hungary-orban-trump-populism">Hungary during COVID-19</a>. We in the US have a bad recent history of presidents stretching their warmaking powers at the expense of Congress. </p><p>The original congressional authorization to use force after 9/11 is still invoked by presidents for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-bill-to-repeal-the-aumf-just-passed-2017-6">conflicts in countries around the world</a> almost 20 years later.</p><p>Wisconsin isn't Hungary, and Gov. Evers isn't launching airstrikes on a foreign country. Still, it's good to see a court stand up for limiting emergency powers, and rebalancing the branches of government by giving the legislature more say. </p><p>Now let's hope the same people praising the Wisconsin decision work to increase the power of the US Congress and diminish our increasingly imperial presidency. <em>— DP</em></p><h3><strong>There's a secret list of judges that Republicans want to retire so Trump can name younger successors </strong></h3><p>Fearing defeat in 2020, Republicans are pushing elderly federal judges to retire so that President Trump gets to fill their seats. Insider's Darren Samuelsohn has obtained the l<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-list-of-federal-judges-gop-insiders-are-urging-to-step-down-so-trump-can-name-replacements-2020-5">ist of more than 80 judges</a> appointed by Republican presidents who are targeted for replacement.</p><h2><strong>Business:</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-weekly-jobless-claims-unemployment-filings-recession-labor-market-coronavirus-2020-5"><strong>Another horrendous week for jobs</strong>:</a> 3 million more Americans filed initial unemployment claims this week, making 36 million in all. Goldman Sachs just increased its estimate of the peak unemployment rate from 15% to 25%. Given the separate nature of the publicized infections (President's valet, Vice President's spokesperson, Ivanka's personal assistant working remotely, people who do work together). it is likely these people did not infect each other  —  it is either the Secret Service (11 cases) or more likely there are multiple external sources which caused these 3 infections (as well as the start within the Secret Service). So how would that happen? Lack of appropriate social distancing, hand washing and so on. These are people who follow the President, and as such are affected by his constant downplaying of the virus, refusal to wear a mask, and so on. </p><p>Secondly and related to the first point, this does not mean testing is faulty at the White House. The testing is working. So as to your last paragraph, it is just unexplainable and reckless of the White House to expect people to return to work without testing AND TRACING in place in a meaningful way nationally.
