This significant shift is expected to contribute a 0.6 percentage point increase to the annual GDP growth, showcasing GenAI's potential as a powerful economic driver. However, the journey to harnessing this potential is fraught with both opportunities and challenges. For the unversed, generative AI, a subset of artificial intelligence, involves machines generating text, images, or other media in response to prompts. This technology has far-reaching implications for industries ranging from capital markets to retail, banking, insurance, and software platforms. Globally, these sectors are expected to witness the automation or augmentation of 49% to 71% of working hours due to GenAI. <h2>31 percent automation in India</h2>The Accenture study also highlights that in the Asia-Pacific region, the impact of GenAI is anticipated to be substantial, with Australia and Japan seeing the highest impact at 45% and 44% of working hours, respectively. For India, the projection of 31% automation signifies a seismic shift in how businesses operate and how work is performed. <keyword id="22702250" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saurabh-kumar-sahu" source="keywords">Saurabh Kumar Sahu</keyword>, Lead for India Business at Accenture, underscored the necessity of a bold vision for reinvention. The Accenture study reveals that while 89% of businesses plan to increase spending on AI, only 35% prioritise workforce development. Moreover, a mere 4% of business leaders have implemented GenAI training at scale. This disparity underscores the urgent need for comprehensive skill development programs. As organisations embrace GenAI, equipping the workforce with the necessary skills is important to ensuring that the technology's implementation is both effective and sustainable. Indian economy could get USD 675 billion due to AI by 2038, study shows

New Delhi, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> is grappling with a profound nutritional shift, as highlighted by the latest <keyword id="20048711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lancet" source="keywords">Lancet</keyword> study, with nutritionists attributing this "double whammy" of undernutrition and obesity to a dual challenge: inadequate consumption of quality foods and easy access to cheap, unhealthy alternatives. The Lancet study, published on Thursday, found that in India, nearly 44 million women and 26 million men were obese in 2022, respectively. The analysis by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) - a global network of scientists - and the World Health Organization (WHO) also found that about 12.5 million children aged between five and 19 were overweight in 2022. "These numbers are up from 2.4 million and 1.1 million in 1990 for women and men, respectively, while for children, the baseline number was about 0.4 million," said study co-author Guha Pradeepa, from Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, told PTI. Reacting to the study findings, nutritionist Sudha <keyword id="19944928" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasudevan" source="keywords">Vasudevan</keyword>, who was not involved in the study, noted that while good quality foods are nutrient-dense like fruits and vegetables, unhealthy foods are usually processed, containing high-fat, sugar, salt, and refined carbohydrates. "We had not yet won the war against undernutrition-related health problems, but now we are additionally burdened by those coming from overnutrition or obesity, and resembling the developed nations in that sense," Vasudevan, Senior Scientist and Head of the Department of Foods &amp; Nutrition Research, MDRF, told PTI. The findings suggest trends of an "epidemiological and nutrition transition" of India, Vasudevan said. "While the developed countries might be economically equipped to deal with obesity and related healthcare burden, India is not and therefore, we are struggling," she said. The Lancet study looked at body mass index (BMI) to understand how obesity and underweight have changed worldwide from 1990 to 2022. It analysed the weights and heights of over 220 million people aged five years or older, from across more than 190 countries. The findings also highlighted a major shift in lifestyle over the past decades, including lack of exercise and healthy food, said Pradeepa. The study found that the adult obesity rate in India increased from 1.2 per cent in 1990 to 9.8 per cent in 2022 for women, while for men, it rose from 0.5 per cent to 5.4 per cent. Pradeepa attributed the spike in obesity rate to a combination of biological and social factors. "Biological factors involve constant, cyclical hormonal activity with pregnancy-specific weight gain, following which taking care of the child takes precedence. "On the other hand, social factors compel them to prioritise their children's and family's health over their own. These factors present as barriers to doing exercise for women and taking care of themselves," she explained. The findings revealed the need for innovative interventions in terms of introducing more physical activity and movement in a day, especially for women, said Pradeepa. She referred to <keyword id="20792091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thandav" source="keywords">Thandav</keyword>, which is one such intervention, developed by Dr. R. M. <keyword id="20401278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anjana" source="keywords">Anjana</keyword>, President of MDRF. Thandav is a ten-minute routine that combines the physical exercise aspect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with enjoyable dance movements. The routine thus makes the act of performing physical exercise more entertaining and recreational, and also more socially acceptable as girls and women can perform this easily at their homes, explained Pradeepa. Anjana along with colleagues at MDRF, have scientifically investigated the impact of Thandav on the physical fitness of Indian girls and women and published papers in journals such as Diabetes Technology &amp; Therapeutics.

From undernutrition to obesity, Lancet study unveils India's double whammy

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some expat Indians are moving back home to launch companies of their own.</li><li>India's booming market size, internet growth, and post-pandemic spending is driving their decision.</li></ul>Nithin Hassan, 41, has always been fascinated with building something of his own.As a child in India, he would get in trouble for dismantling electronics around the house just so he could peek inside.In college, in true <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startups-to-bet-your-career-on-in-2024-2024-2">startup</a> fashion, he started working on a small business out of his parent's garage in Bengaluru, assembling computers for friends and family.It was the early 2000s and the internet was not the trove of knowledge it is today — Hassan was relying on books to learn. Finding mentorship and the right guidance was a challenge, too.Everyone around Hassan told him that going to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/resume-tips-google-software-engineer-skills-experience-careers-software-tech-2024-3">US for a master's degree</a> was the next big opportunity. So he did.Over the next 16 years, he put his startup plans on hold and worked at some of the world's biggest companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta.<div type="image" title="Nithin Hassan" height="2450" width="3266" msid="113831978" hostid="261" sizebytes="215682"></div>But the pandemic felt like a turning point. And its aftermath made India look like a lab-designed business environment: It had just become the world's most populous country, the pandemic had created <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/indicators/private-consumption-continues-to-be-supported-by-pent-up-demand-finance-ministry/articleshow/99069973.cms?from=mdr">pent-up demand</a> for consumer products, and growing internet adoption made commerce more scalable, he said.So Hassan left behind about $500,000 in annual pay at Meta to move back to Bengaluru in December 2023 with his wife and two children. He has since launched two startups.Hassan is part of a group of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-moved-back-to-india-after-living-abroad-for-decade-2024-9">expat Indians moving back</a> home to venture out on their own. As such, he's also part of a decades-long trend of reverse migration back to India.The trend began in the 1990s and picked up at the turn of the century, driven by the economic collapse in 2008, said Binod Khadria, the president of Global Research Forum on Diaspora and Transnationalism. Many of those who returned to India for work were largely working for multinational companies.Today, the impetus for the move often looks a bit different: It's driven by factors like unstable visa policies and economic recessions, which lead to uncertainty when it comes to jobs and duration of stay in these destinations.Many returnees find work in tech, but the finance, retail, and climate sectors also absorb a large number of expat Indians, Khadia said. And some of the returnees are heading back to India to start companies of their own.India is undergoing a startup explosion. The country reported over<a target="_blank" href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2043805"> 140,800 recognized startups</a> at the end of June — nearly 50,000 more than last year — and credited them with creating 1.6 million direct jobs.To be sure, not all of these companies will make it big — and some do still stumble, like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://inc42.com/features/what-are-the-current-problems-being-faced-by-oyo/">Oyo </a>and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackrock-hsbc-funds-byjus-startup-valuation-zero-edtech-india-raveendran-2024-6">Byju's</a>. But the chaos, where even established startups are trying and failing, makes India a fair playing field for new entrants, Hassan said.Business Insider spoke to six <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-vc-wants-see-5-traits-new-founders-fundraising-antler-2024-8">first-time founders </a>about why they have recently returned to India after spending several years, or even an adult life, abroad.<h2 id="0e4a3c47-ba19-4690-8b52-c6bfece1c81d">Fastest-growing economy</h2>The health of the economy and interest from investors are fueling the entrepreneurship boom.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-billionaire-karan-adani-plans-challenge-china-dominance-seaports-2024-8">India's economic growth</a> in 2023 — 8.2% — was the fastest of all large economies worldwide. That's led to greater purchasing power, which lets companies, including startups, sell more.India's inflation rate of about 3.5% is well below its annual wage growth of 9.6%. This makes inflation less of a challenge than it is for slower-growing peers, where consumer-focused businesses have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-jobs-report-sentiment-consumers-elections-recession-inflation-mortgage-rates-2024-9">hurt by high prices</a>.Investors are getting in on the action.From 2015 to 2021, the number of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sequoia-capital-vc-firm-split-china-india-2023-6">unique investors in India</a> nearly quadrupled, though the number is tracking much lower this year, per PitchBook."Other than a slight downturn in 2022 and 2023 due to global macroeconomic factors, VC funding has been consistently growing in India," said Ben Mathias, a managing partner at Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia &amp; India.Besides funding, domestic developments have encouraged founders and VCs too, Mathias said.The Indian government's Universal Payment Interface system has spurred consumers and businesses to pay online, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bcg.com/press/2june2022-digital-payments-in-india-projected-to-reach-10-trillion-by-2026">40% of all digital payments</a> globally happen in India today, the partner said.Programs like Startup India, which provides founders benefits like tax exemption, easier compliance, and funding support, have made creating a company smoother.Devyani Parameshwar worked in the microfinance and fintech space in India in the 2010s before heading to the UK and Africa. She returned to India in 2022 to launch a financial management venture."It's changed dramatically. I remember standing in line at various ministries in Delhi trying to get meetings and then trying to get answers and it wasn't easy in the past," she said of her memories of India.Now, she can use an online platform to ask the country's central bank and banking regulator questions.It's easier than ever for foreign companies to invest in India, which means startups have a clearer exit path through acquisition — something VCs think hard about before entering new markets or writing checks.<h2 id="e5dd7b6f-a09f-4ff2-84c1-5907de96dc5e">Market ripe for the taking</h2>For Rohan Bhide, who spent most of his college and professional life <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worked-in-big-tech-before-launching-my-own-startup-engineer-2024-9">preparing to launch something of his own</a>, a trip home in 2017 while he was studying in the US was a turning point.Indian telecom giant Reliance had recently launched a cheap unlimited data plan, which spiked Indian internet adoption. India was charting among the countries with the highest online transactions."That really, really drew my attention," said Bhide, who worked at Meta after graduation. "It was my dream come true — a huge market, a huge user base, and at the same time, the ability to adopt technology was incredible."Bhide returned to India in January, leaving behind about $580,000 in total compensation at ticketing platform StubHub. He and a cofounder are working on launching a consumer tech product later this year.<div type="image" title="Rohan Bhide" height="2304" width="3072" msid="113831979" hostid="261" sizebytes="218468"></div>Most Indians grew up wanting to work at a multinational company — but that's changing, Bhide said.Freelancing, running your own business, or working for a startup is much more socially acceptable now, because people see the success of other Indian startups. The country has the third-largest number of "unicorns" — companies worth $1 billion or more — with 64, per PitchBook.<h2 id="7f423804-745b-4e04-a250-839e01663f09">Boom in entrepreneurship culture</h2>A lot has changed since Hassan first wanted to launch his hardware startup in the early 2000s.Tech hot spots like Bengaluru and Gurugram have seen a boom in entrepreneurship culture in the last few years, with meet-ups, networking mixers, and even morning walks with like-minded builders.<div type="image" title="man standing in front of mountains in USA" height="2268" width="3024" msid="113831980" hostid="261" sizebytes="141132"></div>Dhruv Anand, who left Google in the US to move back to India in 2021 to launch an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-startups-most-promising-2024-9">AI startup</a>, said that there were lots of other founders and mentors to help guide him."If you want to figure out who's the right chartered accountant to talk to, who's the right lawyer to help you draft agreements, all of that stuff is very easy," Anand said."It's been a really, really supportive community," Bhide said. There are people "telling you about their entire lives just because they want to help you and they're hoping that you pass the favor onto the next person who moves to India and wants to start their own company."<h2 id="3c8bff36-e855-4530-9b44-bcc7f36b0825">Not everything is perfect</h2>Although these founders made the decision to return to India, that doesn't mean they no longer see the benefits of operating in the US.Ruchit Garg founded an agriculture startup in Silicon Valley in 2016, with a focus on supporting farmers around the globe. In 2019, he returned to India, where his late grandfather worked as a farmer.Garg has been building in India ever since, but he says its startup ecosystem cannot yet compete with the Valley's decades of experience."The overall ecosystem was more mature back in Silicon Valley. It's still one of the best places for entrepreneurs. India isn't there yet, although it's growing pretty drastically," he said.Despite efforts to digitalize key processes, many bureaucratic challenges persist.For most founders, after living in US cities where populations are a fraction of those in Mumbai and Bangalore, congested roads and poorer air quality are also everyday annoyances.But India provides some big perks, including affordable domestic help and the appeal of building solutions for problems they witness firsthand."It's a different joy to be able to build for problems that you feel for very personally," Parameshwar, the fintech founder, said. When she worked in Africa, she needed translators. Now, she can speak with her users herself.Bhide said the general sentiment among local founders is shifting from "Build from India" to "Build for India."For some founders, being surrounded by family and the culture they grew up in was another selling point.Niranjan Vemulkar moved back to India in 2015 and later founded a digital legacy planning platform.He said that he never fully felt at home in the US, where he lived for over a decade."For us, it was the fact that we wanted to raise a family in an environment where the children would have access to the grandparents and Indian culture," Vemulkar said. Indians may be 20 years behind Canada in terms of lifestyle, but their aspirations are so high that with a population of 1.4 billion you can just imagine the (sheer amount of) demand." The US is home to more than 4.5 million Indians, which is the highest-earning ethnic group in the country. President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword> recently went on record to say: "It's amazing, Indian - of descent - Americans are taking over the country: you, my Vice President (<keyword id="180909" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kamala-harris" source="Orion">Kamala Harris</keyword>), my speechwriter, Vinay (Vinay Reddy)... You guys are incredible!" Even as one grappled with the shock of four Sikh family members, within the age groups of eight months to 39 years, found dead in California, news of 20-year-old student Varun Manish Chheda stabbed to death on Purdue University campus, sent shockwaves running across the Indian community world over. Earlier this week, Gurpreet Kaur Dosanjh, a Walmart employee, was shot dead and lumped inside a car in a parking lot in San Jose, California. In June this year, Satnam Singh, 31, was shot dead while sitting in a parked SUV down the street from his home in New York. This came days after Sai Charan Nakka, a 25-year-old techie from Telangana, was killed after sustaining an apparent gunshot wound to his head in Maryland Apart from the gruesome killings, Indian Americans have been consistently battling racial taunts, assaults, hate crime robberies, and vandalism of their properties. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), 161 anti-Asian <keyword id="6463069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hate-crimes" source="Orion">hate crimes</keyword> took place in 2019, which rose to 279 in 2020. Giving a religious break-up, the FBI said that 54 anti-Sikh crimes occurred in 2019, which rose to 89 in 2020. Anti-Asian hate crime increased by 339 per cent last year compared to the year before, with New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities surpassing their record numbers in 2020, according to research by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. Late in August, four Indian American women were told that they were "ruining" America and should "go back to India" by a Mexican-American woman in Texas. In the same month, Krishnan Jayaraman was racially abused and called a "disgusting Hindu" by Californian Rajinder Singh in a Taco Bell outlet in Fremont. Community members have also expressed concerns over multiple brazen attacks on Mahatma Gandhi's statue in New York and other US cities. "Such bigoted attacks motivated by <keyword id="44060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="racism" source="Orion">racism</keyword>, xenophobia, and other forms of hate victimise not only those directly targeted by them but also broader communities through creating an atmosphere of fear and danger," Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi had said recently. Last month, Indian-Americans held a peaceful protest at Time Square against the recent spurt in hate crimes and instances of vandalism of the Gandhi statue in the city. An Indian American Attitudes Survey released last year found that "one in two Indian-Americans reports being discriminated against in the past one year, with discrimination based on skin colour identified as the most common form of bias". A US-based diaspora body on Tuesday launched an online petition campaign urging the Secretary of State Anthony <keyword id="10620101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blinken" source="Orion">Blinken</keyword> to reduce the long waitlist for various types of American visas being issued from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. "We request the State Department, Secretary of State Mr Anthony Blinken and the US embassies in India to eliminate wait times for <keyword id="6359421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="visa" source="Orion">visa</keyword> appointments in India. "Even after a two-year-long Covid-era pause in visa appointments at the US embassies in India, the visa appointment situation is far from normal, requiring 300 to 900 days of wait time based on the visa types," Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies or FIIDS said launching its online petition campaign. As per travel.state.gov reports on October 31, there is an average 900+ days' wait time for appointments for visitors' visa (B1/B2), an average 400 days' wait time for students (F, M,J) and an average 300 days' wait time for petition-based temp workers like H, L, O, P and Q across the USA consulates in India (Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata), it said. In contrast, the US consulates in China only have an average three days' wait time, FIIDS said. "The 900+ days' delay deprives Indian Americans and Indian immigrants in the USA of having their beloved relatives to visit, whether in the time of difficulties, needs, or for celebrations, impacting their quality of life," it said. "The 400+ days' wait time affects students joining the US universities, that not only impacts students' future but also negatively impacts the US universities," FIIDS said, adding, the 300+ days' wait time is impacting productivity and success of various industries and businesses due to lack of skilled workers. "We urge the US State Department and Sec Blinken to resolve this issue. We believe it is not only important for US interests but the right thing to do on moral and compassionate grounds," FIIDS said in its petition on Change.Org. "As per Reuters news on 27th Sept, the Secretary of State blamed the lack of resources and funding due to lost revenues from fees on this 'self-financed program,'" the petition said. "We request the concerned authorities to take all necessary steps and to seek emergency funds to resolve this backlog. <ul><li>It is no secret that consumers have started making their purchase decisions based on brands' sustainability practices and it is a topic that just cannot be ignored anymore.</li><li>However, only a handful of brands in India seem to have cracked the code.</li><li>Kantar’s latest report on sustainability revealed that 68% of consumers surveyed worry brands are involved in social issues just for commercial reasons.</li><li>Paru Minocha, Managing Director, South Asia, Insights Division, Kantar tells us how brands convince their consumers about their true purpose and make a real change.</li><li>She further shares what sustainability means to consumers of today and how brands can navigate their journey.</li></ul>Today's consumers expect brands to have a social and environmental purpose. It is, therefore, becoming increasingly imperative for brands to revisit their company’s purpose, hire more resources to focus on sustainability, look for raw material that doesn’t hurt the environment and burn a hole in consumer’s pockets -- all at the same time. <keyword id="11955519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kantars-Asia-Sustainability-Foundational-Study" source="Orion">Kantar’s Asia Sustainability Foundational Study</keyword> revealed that 68% of consumers surveyed worry that brands are involved in social issues just for commercial reasons, which means they expect brands to walk-the-talk, see concrete results in terms of how much they contribute to earth’s ecological footprint and only then make a purchase decision. 77% of them said that they are willing to invest time and money supporting companies that do good. In fact, 66% of consumers said that they have stopped buying products/services that have a negative impact on the environment and society. At the same time, the report also highlighted that India is still a price-sensitive market and while purchasing a product, 84% of the same set of consumers said that they end up prioritising saving money over saving the planet. With this, arises a stark dichotomy between Indian consumers’ ideal preferences and real money-spending habits, which Kantar refers to as ‘The Value-Action Gap.’ We caught up with Paru Minocha, Managing Director, South Asia, Insights Division, Kantar to understand how can brands and consumers close this gap, make a real difference, stop putting the environment on the back-burner, what are some of the hot areas in sustainability today and much more. Excerpts: Q. How do you think consumer behavior has changed after the pandemic? How important is sustainability for them today? The pandemic has precipitated and accelerated a change that was already coming. The realization that taking care of oneself and the family will not be enough to keep everyone safe is quite stark. This gives a new meaning to community and responsible living. It also gave us the time to pause and reflect and the consciousness of sustainability could be stemming from both of these. Kantar’s Shopper Barometer report also showcases that after the first wave of the pandemic, 72% consumers were on the look-out for natural / healthier alternatives of their regular use products. Q. What are some of the areas within sustainability that brands should consider? The first thing that brands need to consider is that consumer expectations and concerns around sustainability are discrete and differ by categories. Therefore, brands need to recognize where to play- which plank or concern to own and drive. Secondly, brands need to be careful and understand that some are hygiene factors and they may not win big if they offer them, but might lose if they don’t. In Kantar’s Sustainability framework, we call these factors- Shields. The other are concerns that are important to consumers and associated with the category, but not yet championed. These are referred to as Swords- which can be used as differentiating planks by the brands. Q. Have brands put sustainability on the back burner due to the pandemic? Considering that consumers are asking for no-touch delivery and minimum contact, which can only be possible with one-time-use packaging. During the pandemic priority for brands was to be available, be safe and keep safe. A lot of good has come out of this churn and sustainability indeed came to the fore-front. A lot of introspection is also happening, both by consumers and brands. While some brands may have paused, many others have activated sustainable behaviors during this time. An example from the food and beverage industry comes to mind- since a consumer could not enjoy coffee at a café and takeaways were essential, some brands like KC Roasters gave 10% off if consumers carried their own mug. Q. It is no secret that consumers have started making their purchase decisions basis a brand's sustainability practices and it cannot be ignored anymore. So, how can brands convince their consumers about their true purpose and make a real change? Brands now have to put sustainability at the heart of their business. This is a non-negotiable. When it is authentic and when it becomes a purpose, consumers will trust you and connect with you better. This gives a brand the power in the consumer relationship. Any halfhearted measures will be seen through and those brands will risk rejection by consumers. Q. Can you share a few examples of Indian brands where they have addressed sustainability successfully? It’s a journey that is just starting across many organizations. It’s not limited to niche brands, but is a movement that will go mass soon. A global example is MAC, that pushes the consumers to adopt recycling by giving a free lipstick on return of 6 empties. In India, Dabur is piloting selling toothpaste without the carton pack to save paper and Colgate has launched a first of its kind recyclable toothpaste tube. Another example is Hindustan Unilever (HUL) piloting an in-store vending model ‘Smart Fill’ at Mumbai’s Reliance Smart Acme Mall. Users are offered INR 30 off on the MRP if they use their own bottle and INR 15 off to those who purchase the Smart Fill bottle. Organic clothing, increasing popularity of electric or hybrid cars all show we are making steps in the right direction. Q. What are some of the things that brands should keep in mind while working on their <keyword id="11955518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainability-roadmap" source="Orion">sustainability roadmap</keyword> to attract more consumers? How can brands close the Value-action gap? Brands need to give consumers a compelling reason to buy. Fundamental marketing principles continue to apply and sustainability in isolation will unlock consumer behaviour change. Brands need to handhold and nudge the consumers along this behavior change. It is important for them to solve for the 3C’s going forward: <ul><li>Cost: and creating desire</li><li>Comfort: and give a clear advantage over current brand</li><li>Convenience: by being present in the moment of truth and making the switch easy</li></ul>

Three teenagers, a physically challenged boy and two brothers, from India have been shortlisted for this year's International Children's Peace (ICP) Prize, South African <keyword id="129626" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="archbishop" source="Orion">Archbishop</keyword> Desmond Tutu on Thursday announced on behalf of the <keyword id="12469649" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kids-rights-foundation" source="Orion">Kids Rights Foundation</keyword>. <keyword id="142727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="muhammad" source="Orion">Muhammad</keyword> Aasim is a 15-year-old physically challenged boy from Kerala, who is inspiring youngsters with disabilities around the world to continue their education. Christina Adane is a 18-year-old girl born in the Netherlands to Ethiopian parents, and now living in the UK, who has made a name for herself fighting food injustice. Vihaan, 17, and Nav Agarwal, 14, are two brothers from Delhi, who are committed to reducing pollution, at a time when the eyes of the world are on the <keyword id="12464952" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cop26-climate-change-conference" source="Orion">COP26 Climate Change Conference</keyword>. The three finalists have been shortlisted by a panel of experts from over 169 nominees from 39 countries, reflecting the impact and significance of a global recognition that offers the winner a worldwide platform of hundreds of millions to promote their work. Announcing the finalists, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, patron of the ICP Prize said: "This year's finalists are worthy of any in my 13 years as Patron of the <keyword id="3864305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-childrens-peace-prize" source="Orion">International Children's Peace Prize</keyword>, the world's definitive youth prize with so many famous previous winners. What magnificent examples this year's finalists are to youngsters, and indeed people of all ages around the globe. They show, through their values and determination, just what children can achieve in campaigning to improve the rights of others worldwide." The hybrid ceremony will take place on November 13 in the Hall of Knights in The Hague, and livestreamed so that the winner's message can reach a global audience. Each year the prize has been awarded by a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and in 2021 Kailash Satyarthi, the 2014 recipient, will declare the winner of the Nkosi statuette along with a study and care grant for him or her to obtain an education. The recipient will also receive a project fund of 100,000 euros, half of which will go to the winner's theme, with half invested by KidsRights in other projects of other young changemakers fighting for children's rights. The International Children's Peace Prize was launched in 2005 during the World Summit of Nobel Peace laureates in Rome, chaired by Mikhail Gorbachev. It is awarded annually to a child who has made a significant contribution to advocating children's rights and improving the situation of vulnerable children such as orphans, child labourers and children with HIV/AIDS. The prize is an initiative of Marc Dullaert, Founder and Chairman of the KidsRights Foundation, an international children's rights organisation based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Three Indian teens shortlisted for International Children's Peace Prize

US President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword> has honoured two Indian-American scientists -- <keyword id="19253515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-gadgil" source="Orion">Ashok Gadgil</keyword> and <keyword id="165227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="subra-suresh" source="Orion">Subra Suresh</keyword> -- with the country's highest scientific awards for their contribution to the field of science and technology. Biden presented the prestigious <keyword id="6356037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="White-House" source="Orion">White House</keyword> National Medal for Technology and Innovation to Gadgil, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at <keyword id="201630" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uc-berkeley" source="Orion">UC Berkeley</keyword>, on Tuesday for providing life-sustaining resources to communities around the world. The award, bestowed on leading US innovators, recognises those who have made lasting contributions to America's competitiveness and quality of life and helped strengthen the nation's technological workforce. Suresh, a professor at large at <keyword id="107088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brown-university" source="Orion">Brown University</keyword>'s School of Engineering, was awarded the National Medal of Science for pioneering research across engineering, physical sciences and life sciences, and particularly for advancing the study of material science and its application to other disciplines. Gadgil was one of 12 recipients of the White House National Medal for Technology and Innovation. Gadgil has developed low--cost solutions to some of the developing world's most intractable problems, including safe drinking water technologies, energy-efficient stoves, and ways to make efficient electric lighting affordable. He focuses on robust inventions that can be deployed as widely as possible, and together, his projects have helped more than 100 million people. Gadgil is also an expert in building energy efficiency and computational fluid dynamics of indoor air and pollutant flows. The White House said Gadgil was presented the medal "for providing life-sustaining resources to communities around the world. His innovative, inexpensive technologies help meet profound needs, from drinking water to fuel-efficient cookstoves. His work is inspired by a belief in the dignity of all people and in our power to solve the great challenges of our time." Gadgil's award is the 17th national medal overall and the second National Medal of Technology and Innovation that Berkeley Lab researchers have earned. "The world is not a fair place. I try to bend my knowledge of science, engineering, and creativity to make it a little less unfair for the people who are holding the short end of the stick. If I can make that difference, go even a little bit in that direction, I think that's fantastic," Gadgil told Barkley Lab in an interview. Gadgil earned degrees in physics from the University of Bombay (now Mumbai), the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. He then joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in 1980 and retired earlier this year as a faculty senior scientist; he is now an affiliate retiree of the Berkeley Lab. He formerly served as the division director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division - now the Energy Technologies Area (ETA). He is also a distinguished professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at UC Berkeley. The announcement from the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation noted Suresh's commitment to research and collaboration across international borders, which has demonstrated how science can forge understanding and cooperation among people and nations. "It's very satisfying," said Suresh, who said he takes special pride in the recognition because of what the medal signifies, according to a Brown University statement. Suresh, the former head of the National Science Foundation (NSF), was presented with the prestigious science medal along with eight others. Born in India in 1956, Suresh graduated from high school at 15 and by age 25, had earned his undergraduate degree, master's degree and Ph.D., which he earned in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in just two years. Suresh became a faculty member at Brown University in 1983 as the youngest member of the engineering faculty. After 10 years at Brown, Suresh went on to become the first Asian-born American to lead the National Science Foundation (NSF), serving as its 13th director after he was nominated by then-president, Barack Obama. He returned to Brown's School of Engineering in September 2023, and earlier this month, the school announced a biennial symposium in his honour focused on the frontiers of technology and society. Under his leadership, NSF launched the Global Research Council, a virtual organisation of heads of science and engineering funding agencies from more than 50 countries, aimed at fostering global collaboration and data sharing. He also oversaw the establishment of the Centre-Life Balance programme, an initiative to increase the number of doctoral-level women in the science and engineering fields from 26 per cent to 40 per cent between 2011 and 2021.
