Guess which two Indian companies managed to make it to the Fortune Next 500 this year? <keyword id="54613" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="makemytrip">MakeMyTrip</keyword> and <keyword id="65866" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRCTC">IRCTC</keyword>. Yes, we ain’t kidding. As per an Economic Times report, the companies, with a majority of mid-sized organizations are capable of breaking into the <keyword id="2941844" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortune-India-500">Fortune India 500</keyword>. 
 iPhone distributor in India, <keyword id="72596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Redington">Redington</keyword> tops the list with annual revenue of over Rs 1,690 crore followed by Inox Wind with annual takings of Rs 1,689 crore, ISMT (Rs 1,685 crore), Emcure Pharmaceuticals (Rs 1,683.5 crore) and Orientcraft (Rs 1,683 crore). 
 
In the lists of 500 organizations, 434 are privately held and contribute 86% of the total revenue and also the companies are biased towards manufacturing rather than providing services. 
Along with that, the sectors that are dominating the entire listings are basic materials, food and agriculture products, pharmacy and information technology; while the laggards include capital goods and iron and steel. 
 
 
The top 10 however, includes Orient Paper &amp; Industries, FAG Bearings India, Lycos Internet, Vatika and Cochin Shipyard. 
 
Fortune, in a statement said, "The 434 private companies on the list, which account for 86 per cent of the total revenue, have seen 6.3% growth, while the 31 government-owned companies with 6.9% share have seen a 7.7% decline. There are 35 foreign-owned companies on the list with a 7.1% share have seen a 7.9% growth." 
 Quoting the 500 companies, the magazine said, "These companies keep the wheels of the economy moving. They are not the massive conglomerates that seem to define <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword> in the media or public consciousness." 
 
These are also the companies that account "for a good chunk of India's industry, often these are the companies that keep the larger, Fortune India 500 companies in the game by contracting out services or providing components".

MakeMyTrip, IRCTC make it to the Fortune India Next 500 list

But Harsh Mariwala a billionaire who leads a <keyword id="2941844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortune-India-500">Fortune India 500</keyword> company — Marico, wanted to solve this problem. He introduced Ascent Foundation seven years ago to promote entrepreneurs and help women entrepreneurs wade through the challenges of businesses, and grow. After all, he nurtured popular brands like Saffola and Revival. However, Mariwala had to rework his cause soon after as there just weren’t enough women entrepreneurs to work with. He turned his not-for-profit venture into a grooming ground for all entrepreneurs-- not just women. "I wanted to impact entrepreneurs in larger numbers. I started this to promote entrepreneurs. But there weren’t many women entrepreneurs,” Mariawala told Business Insider. Today, seven years later, the foundation has 500 entrepreneurs taking part in the peer group discussions but less than 50 of them are women. "Women's take on anything additional to office is very different and they consider it a tradeoff with their time with family" Archanna Das, Head ASCENT Foundation. Ascent is a peer-to-peer network that helps women entrepreneurs troubleshoot their problems through events and workshops. It periodically organises exciting, highly content-driven events like the flagship annual Conclave, Mixers, Workshops, Huddles, etc. They charge an annual fee of ₹10,000 from all the members to attend these events. “SMEs have a learning curve and we offer is a peer learning platform. We are playing a catalytic role,” Mariwala said. Right now, they have people with an annual turnover of up to ₹2,000 crore who are taking part in these peer groups. And only 10% of them are women. Mariwala still wants to help those who need help the most. He understood the issue and roped in Archanna Das (who is brand and communication management professional), and Shivani Divecha (who had curated events at TedxGate) for course correction. The team brought in stricter eligibility criteria and introduced the concept of initiator — a person who would initiate the talk for the first four months. The entrepreneurs — who want to become a member are required to have a turnover of ₹5 crore for product business or ₹1 crore for service business. They get access to the annual Ascent Conclave and other smaller events that happen from time to time. They also get access to a list of 30 mentors across industries who can guide them in dealing with their challenges including ex CEOs of prominent companies Ascent Foundation has also partnered with Stanford University and SP Jain to give their members access to certain courses on entrepreneurship. An Indian billionaire had to rework his philanthropic programme because there weren’t enough women entrepreneurs

Boosted by its consumer-facing businesses like organised retail and telecom, Reliance Industries ended state-owned <keyword id="6356834" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-oil-corporation">Indian Oil Corporation</keyword>'s (IOC) 10-year reign as India's largest company, topping the <keyword id="2941844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortune-India-500">Fortune India 500</keyword> list. With a revenue of Rs 5.81 lakh crore in 2018-19, the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate also became the first privately-held and the only other company to become India's largest corporation apart from IOC for the first time in 10 years, Fortune India said. State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was ranked third, same as in 2018. It was followed by State Bank of India, Tata Motors and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) -- all with no changes in their ranking between 2018 and 2019.
 The list does not take into account subsidiaries of companies and so ONGC's ranking does not reflect those from its recently acquired <keyword id="6374014" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-petroleum">Hindustan Petroleum</keyword> Corp Ltd (HPCL) as well as ONGC Videsh Ltd. Rajesh Exports climbed one position to be ranked 7th on the 2019 list and so did <keyword id="6357147" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-steel">Tata Steel</keyword>, Coal India, Tata Consultancy Services and Larsen &amp; Toubro that were ranked 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, respectively. ICICI Bank rose two positions to be ranked 12th, followed by Hindalco Industries and <keyword id="6357149" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword>. Vedanta Ltd slipped three positions to be ranked 18th on the 2019 list.
 Fortune India said RIL posted a 41.5 per cent rise in its revenue in the financial year 2018-19, which was 8.4 per cent more than IOC, the second-largest company on the list.
 RIL's 2018-19 revenue stood at Rs 5.81 lakh crore, while IOC posted a growth of 26.6 per cent in sales to Rs 5.36 lakh crore in the same year. RIL's profit for 2018-19 was also more than double that of IOC, at Rs 39,588 crore.
 "Over the past 10 years, the oil-to-retail conglomerate's profit has been an average three times higher than that of IOC. The highest it touched compared to IOC was up to 4.8 times, in FY15 when RIL's profit was Rs 23,566 crore and the public sector major's stood at Rs 4,912 crore," it said.
 Overall, the revenue of the Fortune India 500 companies in the 2019 list grew 9.53 per cent, while profit rose 11.8 per cent.
 A total of 57 companies dropped off the list for reasons including consolidation within the public sector banks, public sector undertakings, as well as the private sector.
 This year, the total loss posted by the 500 companies also came down, with 65 companies posting a cumulative loss of Rs 1.67 lakh crore, compared to last year's Rs 2 lakh crore racked up by 79 companies, Fortune India said.
 Public and private sector banks faced diverse fortunes in 2019. As many as 14 of 22 public sector banks reported cumulative losses of Rs 74,253 crore. In contrast, just two private sector banks posted losses (IDFC First Bank, at Rs 1,907.9 crore; and Lakshmi Vilas Bank, at Rs 894.1 crore). The total profit of 24 of private sector banks (including foreign banks and cooperative banks) was Rs 60,747 crore, a 6.16 per cent increase over 2017-18.
 Fortune India said the oil and gas sector (with eight companies) accounted for 22.3 per cent of the total revenue of the 500 companies, followed by banking with 15.88 per cent of the total.
 The banking sector, with 48 companies, is also the biggest contributor by way of the number of companies on the list. Oil and gas, however, has the highest share of profit in the 500, at 23.44 per cent. Reliance Industries topples IOC to become India's largest company

<keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> maintained its highest ranking among Indian private sector companies in the latest Global 500 list published by Fortune for 2022. <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword> Industries improved its rank by 51 places to 104 from its previous year's rank of 155. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has nine companies in the Fortune's Global 500 list -- five from the public sector, and four from the private sector. Only the debutant <keyword id="6368369" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="life-insurance-corporation-of-india" source="Orion">Life Insurance Corporation of India</keyword> -- a public sector company, which came out with an <keyword id="6354763" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ipo" source="Orion">IPO</keyword> earlier this year -- was ranked higher than Reliance at 98 among Indian corporates. It is the 19th year that <keyword id="6484187" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ril" source="Orion">RIL</keyword> has been a part of the Fortune 500 list - much longer than the other private sector companies in India. The Fortune Global 500 list ranks companies by total revenues for their respective fiscal years ended on or before March 31. Reliance Industries closed FY22 with record high consolidated revenues of Rs 7.92 lakh crore, up 47 per cent, and EBITDA of Rs 1.25 lakh crore, up 28.8 per cent Y-o-Y, with each of the O2C, retail and digital services businesses posting all-time high revenues. LIC ranks ahead of Reliance in Fortune's Global 500 list

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Oil+Corporation">Indian Oil Corporation</a> (IOC) and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Reliance+Industries">Reliance Industries</a> (RIL) rank 1st and 2nd in terms of revenue for 6 years in a row in the list of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Fortune+500+">Fortune 500 </a>Indian companies 2015. 
 
IOC came first with an annual revenue of Rs 4,51,911 Crores. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Reliance+Industries">RIL</a> stood second with Rs. 3,82,565 Crores. Tata Motors jumped to the third position with a revenue of Rs 2,67,025 Crores. Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and State Bank of India (SBI) came fourth and fifth. 
 
"While the total revenue of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Fortune+500+">Fortune India 500 </a>companies has nearly doubled from Rs 38,16,000 crore in 2010 to Rs 71,27,000 crore in 2015, the same cannot be said of profits, which went up by a meagre 3.6 per cent over the period," the magazine noted. 
 
Other notable companies in the top 10 include Hindustan Petroleum at 6th with a revenue of Rs 2,13,380 crore, followed by ONGC at Rs. 1,65,161 Crores, Tata Steel at Rs 1,41,669 Crores, Hindalco Industries at Rs 1,06,897 Crores and TCS at Rs 98,368 Crores.

Brian O'Keefe, Senior Executive Editor at Fortune, stated that the rankings this year could be seen as the return of the energy sector, reports <keyword id="14026929" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="teslarati" source="Orion">Teslarati</keyword>. "Tesla made a huge jump again this year, 35 spots from number 100 up to number 65. Tesla's profits shot up to more than 600 per cent last year to $5.5 billion, and Tesla, of course, represents a revolution in the auto industry," O'Keefe was quoted as saying. The company has been on a tear over the past years, steadily climbing up the Fortune 500 list as it established itself as the undisputed leader in electric vehicles. As per the report, the electric car company continued its meteoric rise up the rankings, climbing 35 spots over last year. The company had a blockbuster 2021, bringing in $53.8 billion in revenue, up 70 per cent from 2020, and expanding significantly into key European and Chinese markets. Tesla entered the Fortune 500 for the first time in 2017, with the company becoming number 383 on the list. The company's rise was evident the year later, with the company climbing to number 260 in 2018 and number 144 in 2019.
