The doctors at <keyword id="136410" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fortis-hospital" source="Orion">Fortis Hospital</keyword>, <keyword id="6361194" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vasant-kunj" source="Orion">Vasant Kunj</keyword>, decided to perform the procedure - a technique arguably first described in medical literature in 1854 - as the newer and more sophisticated ones were not feasible due to the patient's precarious condition, the hospital said. A flap surgery involves lifting tissue from a donor site and placing it on the recipient site with an intact blood supply. It was considered the gold standard to reconstruct soft tissue defects of the lower limb during its heydays. However, the technique fell into disuse with the advent of the highly sophisticated microvascular techniques, which enable doctors to join or repair damaged blood vessels or nerves, the hospital said. The road accident victim, who had undergone three unsuccessful surgeries in Iraq in eight months, was brought to the hospital with acute dislocation of the left knee joint and a severely infected, pus-oozing leg, the hospital said. Investigations revealed that the patient's affected leg had no intact blood vessel due to multiple injuries, which is necessary for the reconstructive surgeries currently in vogue. The doctors then decided to perform the cross-leg flap surgery. "After much deliberation, we decided to adopt a complex, multi-step approach. Though the treatment spanned over five weeks, the outcome is satisfactory," said Dr <keyword id="3583003" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dhananjay-gupta" source="Orion">Dhananjay Gupta</keyword>, Director, Orthopaedics &amp; Joint Replacement Surgery, Fortis Vasant Kunj. "Presently, the patient's leg is well covered with soft tissue and there is no evidence of infection," he said. "The patient has been asked to start walking and he is currently undergoing physio-rehabilitation. We hope that once the fracture heals, over a period of three months, he will be able to take his full weight on that leg. We have also planned for additional procedures in the future, which may be required," Gupta added. The case was challenging because the patient had a severe infection and poor bone quality, the hospital said. "So, placing it in a manner where there's no pressure between the two feet and making sure that there is no bending of the flap while it is taking up the new circulation was challenging and required planning, and of course cooperation of the patient," she added. The doctors had initially thought of doing a microvascular free flap reconstruction, which involves taking muscle and skin along with the blood vessels from either the back or the abdomen but had to abandon the idea as there was no intact blood vessel in the patient's leg. Fortis Hospital in Delhi performs a 19th century procedure to save Iraqi national's leg

Capital markets regulator SEBI sent notices last week to four entities asking them to pay Rs 4.56 crore within 15 days in <keyword id="46994" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fortis-healthcare" source="Orion">Fortis Healthcare</keyword>'s case of fund diversion and misrepresentations to conceal the fraud. In addition, the regulator warned of attachment of assets and accounts if they fail to make the payment within the stipulated time. The four entities that received notices are -- Fortis Global Healthcare, RHC Finance, <keyword id="6984621" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shimal-healthcare" source="Orion">Shimal Healthcare</keyword> and ANR Securities. The demand notices came after the entities failed to pay the fine imposed on them by the <keyword id="6355630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board-of-india" source="Orion">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (SEBI) in May 2020. In four fresh notices dated June 9, SEBI directed them to pay Rs 4.56 crore, which includes interest and recovery cost, within 15 days. In the event of non-payment of dues, the regulator will recover the amount by attaching and selling their moveable and immovable properties. Besides, they will face attachment of their bank accounts. Also, the regulator takes the route of arrest and detention in prison to recover the amount. In May 2022, SEBI imposed penalties totalling Rs 38.75 crore on 32 entities, including these four entities in the case related to the diversion of funds of <keyword id="161042" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fortis-healthcare-ltd" source="Orion">Fortis Healthcare Ltd</keyword> (<keyword id="5209318" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fhl" source="Orion">FHL</keyword>) and misrepresentations to conceal the fraud. It levied a fine of Rs 1 crore each on the four entities. The matter goes back to 2018 when a media report came out that the promoters of the listed FHL had allegedly taken massive funds out of the listed company. It also pointed out that Deloitte Haskins &amp; Sells LLP, the statutory auditor of FHL, had refused to sign on the company's second-quarter results until the funds were accounted for. Subsequently, the regulator initiated an investigation into the matter to examine possible violations of the provisions of the PFUTP (Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices). In its probe, SEBI found that a systematic scheme of fraud was devised by the erstwhile promoters of FHL to funnel the resources of a listed company behind the facade of investment through Inter-Corporate Deposits (ICDs) or short-term loans to various intermediate entities for the benefit of RHC Holding, an entity which was indirectly owned and directly controlled by the erstwhile promoters. The funds aggregating to Rs 397 crore were diverted from FHL to RHC Holding, through a wholly-owned subsidiary of FHL -- Fortis Hospitals Ltd. The funds were allegedly routed through a network of entities. SEBI issues demand notices to 4 entities in Fortis Healthcare fund diversion case

Increasing incidence of <keyword id="49477" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lung" source="Orion">lung</keyword> cancer among non-smokers has become a matter of concern in the country, as per health experts. To raise awareness about lung cancer, August 1 every year is observed as the <keyword id="4831539" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-lung-cancer-day" source="Orion">World Lung Cancer Day</keyword>. According to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO), lung cancer is prevalent and more people succumb to deadly disease than from colon, breast and liver cancers combined. Lung cancer is the leading cause of male cancer-related deaths in more than 25 countries, with the upwards trend, experts are expressing fears that the Talking to IANS, Dr Nitin Yashas, Consultant - Medical Oncology and <keyword id="14606671" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hemato-oncology" source="Orion">Hemato-Oncology,</keyword> Manipal Hospital Sarjapur, explained that there has been an increase in the lung cancer cases that among the non-smokers. A majority of the lung cancers present in an advanced stage 4 disease with poor long term survival outcomes. Quoting globocan 2020 data, Yashas said that lung cancer is one of the top five occurring cancers in the country with an estimated approximately 75,000 new cases. Most patients of lung cancer are diagnosed in the age group of 50-70 year, he said. Dr Nitin Yashas further that immunotherapy wherein the body's immune mechanism is activated to fight cancer cells has revolutionised the treatment of lung cancer and is often given in combination with chemotherapy resulting in long survival in years in a subset of patients and is now being evaluated for its efficacy in earlier stages also. The reason is that most lung cancers are diagnosed very late. Lung cancer in early stages does not produce any symptoms or may produce symptoms that are confused with allergy, simple cough, etc. It is also important to note that more than 70 per cent of lung cancers happen in smokers, he says. Dr Sandeep Nayak explains: "We know that smokers are the most vulnerable for lung cancer and we also know that a screening CT scan of lung done every once in a year for heavy smokers can pick up lung cancers early enough to prevent death due to lung cancer." This was a result of a recent research study. The screening CT scan is a low dose scan and can pick lung cancer very early saving many lives, he adds. Surgery has remained the main treatment for lung cancer when it is curable. Surgeries have moved from macabre surgeries to very subtle over the years both in extent and approach. There was a time when the entire lung had to be removed in order to remove lung cancer, Dr. Nayak says. "With the emergence of robotic surgery and fluorescence technology today we are able to remove only a small segment of lung which bears tumors, sparing the rest of the healthy lung. This has become possible because of the extensive research that has happened in the recent past." World Lung Cancer Day: Rise of disease among non-smokers a concern

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Marcia Naomi Berger is a psychotherapist in San Rafael, California.</li><li>This is an adapted excerpt from her memoir, "The Bipolar Therapist: A Journey from Madness to Love and Meaning."</li></ul>A year after my first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fell-in-love-another-patient-psych-ward-rejected-2023-6">psychiatric hospitalization</a> in Queens, New York, I returned to my job at an alcoholism treatment center in San Francisco. A year later, in 1975, I had a second manic episode, which landed me in Langley Porter Hospital.The ward's common area looked like a large, L-shaped living room with couches, chairs, coffee tables, a ping-pong table, and a large bin with arts and crafts supplies. Inside it, I saw yarn and knitting needles, among other supplies. The room's walls were in pale, pastel tones; the furnishings were clean and in good condition.Patients wore their own clothes and seemed mentally clear. All this felt good, yet I was shocked to be there. I wanted to work, see friends, and get my life back.<h2 id="bd37fa83-a0fe-405b-8028-47ca58f2f979">I first met Henry when I was a patient myself</h2>I played ping-pong with Henry, a stocky, lively patient around my age. He cracked jokes as he slammed back my shots. The score was close to even."Hey, where'd you learn to play so well?" he asked."My father taught me when I was a kid." I pictured how Dad's eyes would light up when I surprised him with a good slam or shot back one of his.Henry sent a high one my way, and I smashed it back. His mouth dropped open when the ball grazed the table's edge and landed at his feet."Hey, I could learn some tricks from you," he said."Just lucky." I was having so much fun I almost forgot where I was."This your first time here?""Yeah, but I was at another place last year. It was awful. Langley Porter's a palace compared with that snake pit." My stomach tightened at the thought of Elmhurst; then I relaxedagain in the game's rhythm.He nodded. "I've been in worse too. This place is one of the better ones. It's like — smaller, more personal. Nicer atmosphere, if you know what I mean.""Hey, you could write a tourist guidebook for the mentally ill and compare the facilities." We both laughed. I continued, "You could rate them, give them a different number ofstars or diamonds for service, appearance, etcetera.""Yeah, I could compare the doctors, the food, the furniture, the buildings — ""The patients, visiting policies, bathrooms," I added.He laughed louder. "Ha, ha! Hey, you crack me up. What did you say your name was?""Marcia." I surprised him with a slam, but he lobbed it back. He caught me off guard; I missed, and he won the game.Later, I took yarn from the bin and knitted a pillow cover in earth tones, like the pillow I'd given Doreen during my recent manic spree at work. The wool against my skin and the repetitive clicking of the knitting needles soothed me. I looked forward to finishing the pillow and sleeping with it at home soon.Conversation flowed easily between patients. No one seemed too heavily medicated. It felt like a comfortable dormitory. Whatever happened to me that got me there seemed over.Six months later, I had another <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/bipolar-disorder-manic-spending-2021-3">manic episode</a> and started taking medication that stabilized me. Yet, it was too late for me to regain the respect of some coworkers, which made for a toxic work environment.<h2 id="ee1344ca-6440-4722-99a2-e1ebdc445937">None of my coworkers knew I'd been a psychiatric inpatient</h2>Ironically, I was recruited to my next job as a senior psychiatric social worker in San Francisco General Hospital's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pregnancy-mental-health-diagnosis-reproductive-psychiatrist-cost-2024-6">psychiatric ward</a>, where my colleagues respected me.Not wanting to be stigmatized, I told no one there that I'd been a psychiatric inpatient elsewhere. But something happened that almost blew my cover.A new patient caught my attention one day as I went to the ward's conference room. He looked vaguely familiar."Hey!" he called out. "Don't I know you from somewhere?"I looked at him and felt a sinking feeling in my gut. "Langley Porter, that's it," he called out and laughed. "Langley Porter. Hey, how 'bout that?"It was Henry!No one was in earshot. I heard, "I can ruin you."I wanted to say, please don't tell, but I was still pretending I'd never seen him before. Then I saw his name on my list of patients on the large whiteboard that paired patients with their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-to-find-a-therapist">primary therapists</a>. No, no, no!I'd become friendly with Barbara, a psychology intern in her forties on a different team. I considered her mature and trustworthy.Hoping she wouldn't ask why, and with knots in my stomach, I told Barbara privately that I wasn't comfortable being Henry's therapist."I'll take him," she said, like it was no big deal."Thank you," I gasped, touched by her easy generosity.I still wondered if Henry had revealed my secret. Only human trials will help understand the efficacy of the new Rs 100 pill developed to prevent recurrence of cancer, said doctors on Wednesday. According to a report by NDTV, researchers at the Tata Memorial Centre (<keyword id="19942089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tmc" source="keywords">TMC</keyword>) in Mumbai claimed to have discovered a treatment to prevent relapse of cancer that would cost only Rs 100. The study on mice showed that the pill, named 'R+Cu', containing a pro-oxidant combination of resveratrol and copper, generated oxygen radicals in the stomach to curb cancer recurrence. The experimental mice study "is not a substitute for established treatments, which continue to result in cures in a substantial proportion of cancer patients," Dr <keyword id="20763261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shyam-aggarwal" source="keywords">Shyam Aggarwal</keyword>, Chairman, Department of Medical Oncology, at Sir <keyword id="20162656" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ganga-ram-hospital" source="keywords">Ganga Ram Hospital</keyword> told IANS. In a post on X, Dr. <keyword id="20763262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajeev-jayadevan" source="keywords">Rajeev Jayadevan</keyword>, Co-Chairman National IMA Covid Task Force called it "an exaggerated claim". While calling the research "interesting, praiseworthy", he said it cannot be seen as "cancer cure." Dr Shyam Aggarwal explained that the research shows the effect of cell-free chromatin (fragments of chromosomes released from cancer cells after chemotherapy) on normal tissues causing a cascade of inflammation leading to side effects such as mucositis, low blood counts, etc. "Use of a combination of copper and resveratrol (a commercially-available nutraceutical) has been shown to degrade circulating cell-free chromatin, leading to reduction of toxicity in some human studies. Other human studies are underway," he said. The study claims that the pill can halve the side effects caused by chemotherapy, while also reducing the odds of getting cancer by 30 per cent. The researchers "used a pro-oxidant combination of copper and resveratrol (found in peanuts, cocoa, grapes) known to damage DNA by generating oxygen radicals," Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan wrote in his post on X. "Whether this will translate into real world outcomes for people with cancer (beyond mice), what toxicities could occur from its pro-oxidant, DNA-damaging effect, is yet to be determined," he said. However, Dr. <keyword id="20763263" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rahul-bhargava" source="keywords">Rahul Bhargava</keyword>, Principal Director &amp; Chief BMT, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, called it "a great breakthrough in the field of medical research. Indian researchers are creating history. If the drug works, it will be a great benefit for cancer patients." "The tablet is promising and shows potential to be effective, but human trials are yet to be completed, which could take about five years," he told IANS. Human trials may reveal efficacy of new Rs 100 cancer pill: Docs

The week gone by continued to be volatile and all gains built up during the course of the first four days were lost and even more, on Friday. The week ended with BSE SENSEX losing 163.23 points or 0.43 per cent to close at 37877.34 points while NIFTY lost 35.65 points or 0.32 per cent to close at 11,178.40 points. The broader indices saw BSE100 lose 0.03 per cent while BSE200 and BSE500 gained 0.03 per cent and 0.18 per cent respectively. BSEMIDCAP was up 1.51 per cent while BSESMALLCAP was up 1.36 per cent. This kind of difference where the benchmark indices are in the red and the broader indices are in positive, has happened after a very long time. Normally the trend is clear and all indices are either positive or negative, not some positive and some negative. The Indian Rupee gained 3 paisa or 0.04 per cent to close at Rs 74.90 to the US Dollar. Dow jones had a good week and gained 497.54 points or 1.81 per cent to close at 27,931.02 points. The Indian indices gained on two days and lost on three days with Friday being the sharp loser and BSESENSEX losing 467 points and NIFTY 122 points. What is significant is the fact that markets were gaining and in the positive till Friday happened. RBI has agreed to pay to the government Rs 57,128 crores as dividend for 2019-2020. ICICI has successfully completed its QIP for Rs 15,000 crores at a price of Rs 358. Th share had closed at Rs 361.45 on Friday, a weekly gain of Rs 3.60 or 1.01 per cent. The Supreme Court hearing the AGR matter in case of telecom companies has come to the issue of Reliance industries and Reliance Communications. The spectrum was allotted to the erstwhile telecom company which was a part of Reliance Industries and then was split when the family division happened. Post Reliance Communications going belly-up and exiting the telecom business, it entered into a spectrum deal with Jio. The Supreme court is asking for the payment of Rs 31,000 crores towards the spectrum dues. Readers would recall that Reliance Jio had taken over the assets and liabilities of Reliance Communications Limited at almost zero value as it had agreed to take over the liabilities as well. This could affect the share prices when trading begins on Monday. Shares of Reliance industries had closed at Rs 2,114 a loss of Rs 33 or 1.54 per cent for the week when trading ended on Friday. Shares of Yes Bank hit a high of Rs 17.16 before profit taking saw the share fall, and close at Rs 15.07, a weekly gain of Rs 0.93 or 7.39 per cent. The share has now entered a trading zone and would move between 13.5-16 over the next couple of weeks till news flow about the performance of the bank post fund raising are known. IHH, the Malaysian based company which had acquired Fortis Healthcare has proposed in the board meeting to change the name of the company to Parkway from the present name and disassociate itself from the Singh brothers in all manners. This proposed change is of course subject to regulatory approvals and the Supreme Court, where there is a matter of the open offer also pending. As and when this issue is resolved, the company would have renamed itself with a brand which is operating in more than 10 countries and is predominantly a South Asian group of hospital chain. The share has been seeing steady accumulation on expectation of the open offer currently stayed by the Supreme Court being cleared. Shares had closed at Rs 135.80, down Rs 2.15 or 1.56 per cent. Coming to the Covid-19 front, the world saw 216,17,987 patients, 7,69,006 deaths and 143,34,222 people recovering. In India, there were 25,90,501 patients, 50,099 deaths and 18,62,665 people recovering. Compared to the previous week, the world saw 18,06,240 new patients, 39,345 deaths and 16,08,074 people recovering. This effectively meant that 89.02 per cent of the patients added during the week have recovered overall. In India, there were 4,34,058 new patients, 6,611 deaths and 3,80,999 patients recovering. The recovery rate for the week was 87.77 per cent. Decent improvement in the recovery rate and one hopes and prays that work on the vaccine, which is globally on a war footing fructifies. The week ahead would see markets open on a weak note and Reliance is likely to be under pressure on the AGR news. Markets would face resistance at the previous week's high of 38,556 points and 11,366 on NIFTY. Incidentally, while BSESENSEX failed to cross the recent high of 38,617 points, NIFTY did cross 11,341 points. These levels would be difficult to cross currently and would become a resistance for the time being. On the downside, we would find support at 37,000 on BSESENSEX and at 10,900 points on NIFTY if not earlier. The strategy would be to buy on sharp dips or wait for the fall. Gen Z and older proponents say that the challenge is actually risk averse compared to millennial or Gen X drinking habits — like drinking out of trash cans or taping beers to your hands and chugging them — and <a href="https://www.insider.com/college-kids-defend-borg-tiktok-drinking-trend-say-warnings-overblown-2023-3">can be a harm-reduction strategy.</a> Some also claim that it can cure hangovers, but experts have refuted this claim."I am so proud of you, Gen Z," Brit Culp-Sapp, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@b_culpsapp/video/7202403229697740078?q=b_culpsapp%20borg&amp;t=1677088647257" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a millennial TikTok creator said.</a> "The Gen Xers and the millennials definitely made some way more questionable decisions about what we were drinking."The jugs, marked with "BORG" puns in sharpies and often found at college "darties," or day parties, have resulted in <a href="https://www.insider.com/university-massachusetts-borg-drinking-trend-tiktok-viral-video-parties-ambulances-2023-3">dozens of UMass students going to the hospital</a> after a party. Experts say that the copious amount of alcohol in the jugs — sometimes up to 17 shots — <a href="https://www.insider.com/experts-warn-college-drinking-fad-borg-going-viral-on-tiktok-2023-2">can result in serious injury</a> or <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-borgs-black-out-rage-gallon-tiktok-college-alcohol-poisoning-2023-3">alcohol poisoning</a>."It's another trend and another spin on drinking trends in the college-aged students," Dr. Sarah Andrews, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine, told Insider."And one of my biggest concerns was the amount of alcohol that's in one of these BORGs, and the need to bring one's own alcohol with you to your party in college, because it's just kind of expected that people will be drinking as much, as heavily."<h2>College-aged students across the board are prone to binge drinking, studies show</h2>Gen-Z isn't alone in its not-so-smart drinking habits. For decades, research has found that college-aged adults in previous generations are at higher risk for engaging in binge drinking. "That age group you have not as strong executive functioning, so decision-making skills," Andrews said. "The amount of alcohol can that's available can be very challenging within the college atmosphere as well... and a lot of college students have unstructured time, so they might be able to sleep in the next day. They don't have as many responsibilities as other populations might have."Studies show that young adults leaving home to go to college and increased independence <a href="https://www.jsad.com/doi/abs/10.15288/jsa.2006.67.810" target="_blank" rel="noopener">affects how much alcohol young people consume.</a>College students between the ages of 18 and 24 are <a href="https://alcohol.org/teens/college-campuses/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">more likely to binge drink</a> than their non-college peers, studies from the American Addiction Centers show. These drinking habits resulted in an estimated 1,519 deaths of college students <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19538908/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a year between 1998 and 2005.</a>College drinking is <a href="https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/brochures-and-fact-sheets/college-drinking" target="_blank" rel="noopener">often associated with other problems</a> such as violence, sexually transmitted diseases, and sexual assault.Patterns of binge drinking <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2930506/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">associated with bad outcomes</a> were the result of college-specific activities like fraternity and sorority events, on-campus living, and spring break trips.One aspect of college drinking unique to Gen Z and millennials is social media's role in drinking trends. The popularity of BORGs increased because of TikTok, where young adults share BORG recipes and clips of them joyfully chugging their concoctions, usually without showing the negative effects these drinks could have, Andrews said."I think that part is very challenging. It's kind of almost an expected thing to do," Andrews said. <h2>Despite the BORG craze, young people are drinking less than they used to</h2>Reports of BORGs on college campuses may make it appear that binge drinking among young people is on the rise, but data shows otherwise.The University of Michigan's <a href="http://www.monitoringthefuture.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Monitoring the Future</a> study, one of the most comprehensive data sets on youth drinking up to 2017, found that Millennials and Gen Z are <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2018/04/16/teenagers-and-college-age-people-drink-less-while-this-group-pours-another-round/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">drinking less than Boomers and Gen X did at their age</a>. Another study in JAMA Pediatrics found that the number of college students in the US who have reported that they do not drink increased from <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2771635" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20% to 28% between 2002 and 2018. </a>The trend, often dubbed the "sober curious movement," comes at a time when more research indicates a bevy of <a href="https://www.insider.com/timeline-of-the-sober-curious-movement-2022-12#a-bevy-of-nonalcoholic-wines-beers-and-liquors-have-cropped-up-in-response-to-the-sober-curious-movement-4">health problems associated with heavy drinking</a> and has given rise to an industry catering to young adults that don't want to drink and includes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-women-sober-curious-movement-bella-hadid-kin-ritual-2021-11">influencer-promoted nonalcoholic cocktails</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sober-bars-booming-across-country-alcohol-free-lifestyle-dry-january-2023-1">sober bars cropping up across the country.</a>Andrews said that time will tell if these Gen Z and millennial drinking habits will result in better outcomes for college students, like fewer deaths of college-aged students due to alcohol or assaults on campus."I think it's great that people are being more aware of it, and how it can affect the body and the amount that they're doing," Andrews said. "It's just how much does that awareness then translate into changes in behavior?"

New Delhi, Apr 29 () Fortis Healthcare on Wednesday said it has rolled out online consultations for patients in 23 hospitals across its country-wide network amid the lockdown to contain coronavirus infections. As the country continues with its lockdown, the step was conceived to continue patient care services without risking the health of patients or doctors, the healthcare major said in a statement. Both tele-consults as well as video consult services have been running successfully with encouraging response from patients, it added. "E-consultations are being organised to ensure the continuity of care for post-surgical upcountry patients," Fortis Healthcare Managing Director and CEO Ashutosh Raghuvanshi said. Besides, patients with ailments like diabetes or hypertension and expecting mothers can also consult the doctors through this facility, he added. "As the proactive lockdown was necessary to fight off this pandemic, it must not be an excuse to delay any health consultations that our patients wanted to avail," Raghuvanshi said. Over 8,000 consultations have taken place via the e-consulting medium till now across various hospitals, Fortis said. Fortis Hospital in Mohali saw the maximum number of e-consults at 1,539 followed by Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurugram at 1,330. Fortis Hospital, BG Road, in Bengaluru had 1,117 consultations since the start of this service. The online consults take place during the regular outpatient department (OPD) hours at normal rates and doctors from specialties like neurology, gynecology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, pediatrics and internal medicine are providing online consultations as of now, it added. New Delhi, Doctors, nurses and healthcare personnel fighting COVID-19 from the front lines have to spend many hours a day wearing face masks. Although it offers invaluable protection, health experts have stressed that sweating and the rubbing of the masks against the nose may lead to significant skin damage. However, following some simple tips like keeping the skin clean, well-hydrated and moisturised can help one avoid skin damage from face masks, according to a recent study, published in the Journal of Wound Care. Dermatologist D.M. Mahajan of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi also said that deeply moisturising the skin is important for people who need to wear masks for a long time. If possible, take off the mask for a while after maintaining some social distancing and keep changing the mask every 8-9 hours, the doctor said. "Doctors need to be very cautious as in this profession social distancing is not possible all the time. To avoid getting infected, they have to wear a mask which needs to have adequate tightness. It is very pertinent that there has to be an adequate pressure which can cause a fair amount of pressure on the nasal bridge, surrounding cheek and jawbone," Mahajan told IANS. Wearing masks for a long time can cause rashes, dryness, acne or pimple formation and dermatitis, the doctor said. Manjul Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Dermatology, <keyword id="136410" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortis-hospital">Fortis Hospital</keyword> in Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi said that surgical face masks and N95 respirator masks when used properly provide adequate protection against infectious diseases transmitted by respiratory droplets. "Surgical facemasks are commonly made up of polypropylene which is a non woven fabric. Disposable N95 surgical respirators consist of four layers and the innermost layer coming in contact with the skin is also made up of polypropylene," Agarwal said. "Although polypropylene is considered to be the safest of all plastics, it can cause skin allergies in rare cases, especially if the mask is wet and worn for long hours. "These masks also have a malleable aluminium nose strip placed for a tighter seal of the nose. This, in turn, can cause allergic <keyword id="8522171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Contact-dermatitis">contact dermatitis</keyword>, frictional dermatitis and frictional melanosis over the nose," she told IANS. According to the doctor, the moisture which collects from <keyword id="1274231" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="exhalation">exhalation</keyword> inside the mask especially at body temperature can provide a perfect setting for the bacteria to thrive and may cause infections like folliculitis, especially in men with heavy beards. Pre-existing dermatoses like acne and fungal infections may also be aggravated due to sweat collection. "If any occlusive topicals like oil-based moisturisers and makeup are applied prior to the application of masks, they can lead to blockage of skin pores causing sebum accumulation and acne. The tight elastic bands stretching over the ears can cause pain and contact dermatitis in the retroauricular region," Agarwal said. "Frequent changing of the mask, mask free time in between if possible may be practised to prevent these dermatological adverse effects," she noted. For people with acne-prone skin, it may be worth avoiding some of the traditional acne treatments such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids as they make the skin further dry or irritable, said Rahul Arora, Associate Consultant Dermatology, Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi. This effect can be aggravated by the routine use of face masks. This, however, does not mean that people with sensitive skin cannot wear face masks. "If they feel that their skin is irritated it can help to use moisturisers that contain ceramides, <keyword id="341351" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Squalene">squalene</keyword>, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid that may rehydrate the skin and also serve as a barrier for the skin to protect it," he added.
