July is here, and while we are still 5 months away from the end of 2024, the deadline to file your <keyword id="19897621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITR" source="keywords">ITR</keyword> is July 31st, which is looming large. While it is best to not "file away" filing your income tax returns for later, are you aware of the right ITR form that applies to you? Out of the 7 ITR forms available, how do you know which one is the right fit for you, and where to start? For starters, the first 4 ITR forms (ITR-1,2,3,4) are necessary for an individual to know about, while filing taxes. Lets decode all these forms in detail with Tanya, a 22 year old IT professional who earns Rs 10,000 per month. Her mother has a monthly rental income of Rs 12,000 per month. Will the two of them be required to file ITR? Well, the answer is no. You see, Tanya's <keyword id="21120362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-income" source="keywords">annual income</keyword> comes to about Rs 1,20,000, while her mother's total rental income comes to about Rs 2,40,000. If you opt for the old tax regime, you don't need to file an ITR if you annual income is below Rs 2.5 lakh. In the new regime, this limit stands at Rs 3 lakh. Similarly, if your grandparents are aged between 61-79, they need not file an ITR if their annual income (via rent, pensions) falls below Rs 3 lakh. And if they are aged above 80, this threshold if of Rs 5 lakh for the year. <h2>ITR-1: Sahaj </h2>Lets continue with Tanya's life. She works super hard, and over the years, earns a few well deserved raises. Now, her monthly income is Rs 50,000. In this case, she will have to file ITR-1, which is also known as Sahaj. This form applies to you if your total annual income for the year does not exceed Rs 50,00,000. The best part? This form is generally pre-filled, and all you've got to do is verify the information through your <keyword id="22247325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Form-16" source="keywords">Form-16</keyword> and Annual Information Statement (AIS). <h2>ITR-2 </h2>Over time, Tanya decides to start investing in mutual funds. While she holds most of her investments for the long-term, she is compelled to sell some units of her investment in equity mutual funds, due to a medical emergency at home. She had purchased some equity mutual fund units worth Rs 2,00,000 on April 1, 2023. Due to the emergency, she had to sell about Rs 80,000 worth of units in December of the same year. On redemption, she received Rs 1,10,000. Since she had held these securities for less than 12 months, Tanya would have to pay a short-term <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword> of 15%, Had Tanya held on to these securities for more than 12 months and then sold them at a gain, she'd have to pay long-term capital gains tax, which is applicable at 10% for equity mutual funds. And to account for such capital gains, be it from sale of shares, mutual funds, property or the like, Tanya needs to file ITR-2. <h2>ITR-3</h2>Tanya's brother, Vishal, is a freelancer who got hooked to trading in futures and options during the pandemic. Initially, he made solid profits, but during FY24, he ran into losses worth Rs 5 lakh. In this case, he will have to file ITR-3 to report his losses. This form is to be used by those who earn income under the head of profits (or even losses) of business or profession, other than regular salary. In case Tanya's mother starts receiving rental income from more than one house properties, she will also have to file ITR-3. Or, in case you are a CA, or a doctor and have your own practice (are self employed), this form is for you. <h2>ITR-4: Sugam </h2>This form is exclusively for those who opt to be taxed under the presumptive taxation scheme. You can opt for this scheme if you are a small business/firm and your annual turnover is less than Rs 3 crore, or you are self employed with an annual revenue of less than Rs 75 lakh. Under this, you don't pay taxes on your actual income, rather, you pay taxes on a presumed income. As per law, under this scheme, your net income will be considered as 6% of your total revenue, and you'll have to pay taxes on that. Here, you're really not calculating your income for taxation, and hence, it is not even mandatory to maintain records. In case you file the wrong ITR, you can always file a revised return by December 31, 2024. In case you miss filing your ITR on time, you’ll have to pay Rs 5,000 as a penalty. Moreover, you’ll be charged interest on your outstanding tax liability, if there is any. So, get down to work, right away!

The deadline to issue Form 16, which shows the <keyword id="441503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tax-deducted-at-source">tax deducted at source</keyword> (<keyword id="17506" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="TDS">TDS</keyword>) on salaried income for employees, is May 31st. "The last date for the employers to share the form 16 with the employees is 31st May of the financial year immediately following the financial year in which income tax was paid and tax deducted," Archit Gupta, founder &amp; CEO ClearTax.com, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/tax/get-ready-to-file-your-itr-deadline-for-employers-to-provide-form-16-is-may-31/articleshow/58790781.cms">ET</a>. However, if no TDS has been deducted, the employer doesn’t need to issue the Form 16. "The due dates were extended for submission of TDS Returns. But no extension has been announced for Form 16 yet. It must be kept in mind that an extension in the deadline for employers to provide Form 16 will reduce the time available for filing of returns for the salaried who rely on Form 16 to prepare their returns", says Gupta. In case the employer doesn’t furnish Form 16 to the employee by the due date, (s)he is liable to pay a penalty of Rs 100 per day till he issues the form, under Section 272A (2) (g) of the Income Tax act. However, the penalty will not exceed the amount of tax deductible. In case someone finds it hard to collect the Form 16 from employers, either previous or present, (s)he can complain to the concerned assessing officer in writing, who will then take appropriate action or initiate penalty proceedings against the employer. Attention employers! Deadline for issuing Form 16 approaching

The deadline to e-file <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=income+tax+returns&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">income tax returns</a> for FY2015-16 has been extended till 5th August 2016. Anyone who has a gross annual income of Rs 2.5 lakh and more is lawfully required to file their tax returns. You should file returns even if you don’t have taxable income because the <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax">income tax</keyword> return is an important document that is required at the time of applying for a visa or loan and to avail income tax refunds, among other reasons. 
 
Remember that anyone with an annual gross income of Rs 5 lakh and more has to compulsorily e-file their tax returns. They cannot file physical returns. 
 
But before you e-file your <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=income+tax+returns&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">tax returns</a> in these last few days, make sure you avoid any last minute glitches by keeping the following points in mind. 
 
Information required to file tax returns

3. Interest income details 
4. Personal details like PAN, bank account number, etc

If you have worked with different companies during the financial year, you should have Form 16s from both or at least your payslips to compute your cumulative income for the year. 
 
Adding different sources of income 
Many taxpayers are not aware of the different incomes that need to be included in their income tax returns. This includes income from interest earned on savings bank accounts, fixed deposits, etc. Also, income from some freelance work that you might have done or income from house property that you own. All of these incomes have to be added to your tax returns as well. 
 
Paying tax due If you have taxable income even after claiming deductions on allowances, investments and expenses, you will need to pay the tax to the government to be able to file your returns. You cannot file tax returns without paying tax that is due using Challan 280 on the <keyword id="65338" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Department">Income Tax Department</keyword> website. After you have made the payment, you have to report the same in your income tax returns while filing them. 
 
Verifying tax returns 
The process of filing income tax returns doesn’t get completed till the returns are verified. Your returns can be verified physically or electronically. The e-verification method is easy and quick when you use your netbanking account or generate an electronic verification code. Either way, you should verify your returns. Tax returns are not considered filed if they are not verified in a timely manner. 
 
Benefits of e-filing 
There are many advantages of e-filing your income tax returns. The process of doing it online is easy and quick as compared to the physical process. Your tax returns are an important document that is required at the time of applying for a loan or visa. Today is <keyword id="22458495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="July-31st" source="keywords">July 31st</keyword>, 2024, the last day to file your income tax returns, without having to pay any penalties. And before you ask, the <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-department" source="keywords">Income Tax Department</keyword> has not come out with any notification informing the taxpayers of a deadline extension. That is why you should not delay filing your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/article/heres-your-ready-reckoner-for-itr-filing/articleshow/111402608.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">income tax returns</a> anymore! The <keyword id="20171597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-department" source="keywords">IT department</keyword> noted that as of July 26th, 2024, over 5 crore ITRs had already been filed, marking an 8.5% increase from the number of ITRs filed during this period, last year. The IT department, in an X post, highlighted that last year, it had reached the 5-crore <keyword id="22083160" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-filing-deadline" source="keywords">ITR filing deadline</keyword> on July 27th. However, this year, it had breached the milestone a day earlier, i.e., on July 26th, 2024. Earlier, the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants and Income Tax Bar Association had requested a deadline extension for AY 2024–25 from July 31st, 2024, to August 31st, 2024, citing issues and glitches in the tax filing portal. However, there has been no response from the finance ministry on the same. <h2>What happens if I don't file my ITR until July 31st? </h2>For AY 2024–25, you can file a <keyword id="6380232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="belated-ITR" source="Orion">belated ITR</keyword> until December 31st, 2024. But remember, it comes with many disadvantages as well. Here's a snapshot of all the benefits you will have to forego: <h2>What are the penalties for late filing of ITR? </h2>1. You will have to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000 if your total annual taxable income is below Rs 5,00,000. But if your taxable income exceeds this threshold, you will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000. 2. Even if you have to file a <keyword id="17933087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIL-ITR" source="Orion">nil ITR</keyword>, you must do so before July 31st. This is because if you do not end up filing it on time, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. 3. According to Section 234A of the <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">Income Tax Act</keyword>, you will also have to pay interest on your outstanding tax amount at the rate of 1% per month, starting from the due date, i.e., July 31st. <h2>No carry forward of losses, old tax regime</h2>1. You will not be able to carry forward any losses, including those from your mutual funds or stock investments, business income, and other sources. You will only be allowed to carry forward your losses from house properties. This could significantly raise your total tax liability and lead to you incurring hefty losses. 2. After July 31st, 2024, you will not be able to opt for the old tax regime for tax calculation purposes. Starting August 1, the new tax regime, which offers significantly fewer deductions and exemptions as compared to the old regime, will be considered default for you. ITR Filing: Today is the last day to file your income tax returns, so file today to avoid penalties

Today is the last day to file your <keyword id="19948101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-returns" source="keywords">income tax returns</keyword> for <keyword id="21169488" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AY-2024-25" source="keywords">AY 2024-25</keyword>, without having to pay a <keyword id="19899183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="penalty" source="keywords">penalty</keyword>. Starting tomorrow, you will be able to file your <keyword id="19897621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itr" source="keywords">ITR</keyword>, but you'd have to forego several benefits, like not being able to choose the old tax regime, or paying a penalty of Rs 1,000 (if your annual taxable income is less than Rs 5,00,000). As per official data, about 6 crore ITRs have already been filed so far, and around 70% of them have opted for the new tax regime. But if you have left your ITR filing to the <keyword id="22611090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="last-minute" source="keywords">last minute</keyword>, and will rush to meet the deadline today, here's a handy list of mistakes you should avoid while filing your ITR: 1. Do not miss out on reporting on your income from other sources. Generally, we only account for our salary, income from business/profession and capital gains (if any) while calculating our tax liability. However, there is one crucial segment we tend to forget-income from other sources. This includes interest income from your savings account, fixed deposits, recurring deposits and bonds. 2. Income from other sources also includes any dividend income you've received throughout the year through stocks, mutual funds, and any monetary gifts with value of over Rs 50,000 you've received from friends, acquaintances, or anyone but your relatives. This should also include any liabilities you have incurred on these assets. 4. If you are an NRI, or an Indian holding foreign assets, you will have to share details of all your foreign income, assets, accounts and stocks under <keyword id="22334040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="schedule-fa" source="keywords">Schedule FA</keyword>, along with your ITR. This needs to be done, irrespective of whether your income is taxable in India or not. 5. If you are filing your ITR as per your AIS (<keyword id="20776896" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-information-statement" source="keywords">Annual Information Statement</keyword>) and see erroneous entries, don't ignore them. File your ITR as per Form 26AS, which is a condensed version of AIS, and Form 16A and B, which is provided by your employer (both previous and current). But remember to go back and flag errors in AIS, otherwise the IT department could penalise you for willful misreporting of your income. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111402608" title="ITR filing: Documents you need to file your income tax return" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> 6. Do not forget to e-verify your ITR within 30 days of filing it. If you do not do this, your ITR filing will be considered invalid. For instance, the ITR-1 form is designed for resident individuals who have income from salary, one house property, and other sources such as interest or dividends, provided their total income does not exceed Rs 50 lakh. Do remember to double-check all the details that you enter in your ITR. Also, filing an ITR requires certain documents like bank statements, investment proofs, <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="keywords">TDS</keyword> certificates, Form 16 etc. Even though you don’t have to attach these documents in the ITR, you must keep them handy. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111402608" title="ITR filing: Documents you need to file your income tax return" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>Check income and investment details</h2> If you have just one source of income, the process is easy as you just need to mention that in your ITR. Similarly, ensure that you have entered all investment details in the form correctly. Five things to remember as you file your ITRs at the last minute

<ul><li>In some cases, the amount of tax deducted and the <keyword id="17506" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="Orion">TDS</keyword> credit displayed in Form 26AS may not match.</li><li>If you find that TDS has not been deducted by your employer, or if there are other discrepancies, get it corrected.</li><li>If you face difficulty in resolving the issue, you can file an online complaint with the <keyword id="65338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-department" source="Orion">Income Tax Department</keyword>. </li></ul>If you are a salaried employee, the employer will deduct tax deducted at source (TDS) on your behalf, and provide the <keyword id="6354751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax" source="Orion">income tax</keyword> department with specific information on the tax deducted. Form 26AS is a consolidated tax statement that provides details of various tax-related transactions, including TDS. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Discrepancy in tax deducted and TDS credit">Discrepancy in tax deducted and TDS credit</cmsannotation> In some cases, the amount of tax deducted, and the TDS credit displayed in Form 26AS may not match the actual amount. “This discrepancy can occur due to various reasons, such as the deductor failing to provide TDS details to the Income-tax Department, or deducting taxes using an incorrect Permanent Account Number. “Taxpayers are advised to verify the tax credit displayed in Form 26AS, and reconcile any differences, if present,” says Aashish Sharma, co- founder, and litigation head, Lex N Tax, a tax consultancy firm. Sometimes, the TDS may not have been deducted by the employer. “Generally, the employers provide the tax computation to the employees for their approval. The employees may raise any concerns regarding non-deduction of TDS to their employers in case no such TDS is deducted,” says Suresh Surana, Founder, RSM India, an audit, tax and consulting services provider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Steps to view form 26AS">Steps to view form 26AS</cmsannotation> To check if your employer has deducted TDS, follow these steps. First, register on the Income Tax Department's portal by visiting their website, and completing the registration process. Once registered, log in to the e-Filing portal using your credentials. Look for the "View Form 26AS (Tax Credit)" option, which can be found under the e-file section. Confirm the disclaimer, and proceed by selecting the relevant tick box. Next, choose the assessment year for which you want to view Form 26AS. Remember that the assessment year usually corresponds to the financial year. Finally, you'll have two viewing options: downloading the Form 26AS statement as a PDF, or viewing it directly on the portal in HTML format. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="What to do in case of a discrepancy">What to do in case of a discrepancy</cmsannotation> “If you find that TDS has not been deducted by your employer, or if there are discrepancies in the TDS details, you should take the following steps,” says Sharma. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Contact your employer:">Contact your employer: </cmsannotation>Reach out to your employer, and discuss the issue. Provide them with the necessary details, and supporting documents to rectify the situation. They should rectify the TDS deductions in their records, and provide you with updated Form 16. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="File an online complaint:">File an online complaint:</cmsannotation> If your employer does not take appropriate action, or if you face difficulty in resolving the issue, you can file an online complaint with the Income Tax Department through their e-Filing portal. Look for the "File Grievance" or "File Complaint" option, and provide the required information. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Follow up with the IT Department:">Follow up with the IT Department: </cmsannotation>After filing the complaint, regularly check the status of your complaint on the e-Filing portal. The Income Tax Department will investigate the matter and take necessary action to rectify the TDS discrepancy. If you are unsure about the appropriate steps to take, or require further assistance, it is advisable to consult a tax professional, or seek guidance from a chartered accountant, or tax expert who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
