I'm a survival specialist, and I've been practicing and teaching wilderness survival for over 17 years. I participated in five seasons of the Discovery show "Naked and Afraid." Today, I'll be looking at wilderness survival scenes in movies and judging how real they are.[yelling]The Revenant" (2015)Unexpected falls and falls in general are actually one of the biggest ways people die when they're in the backcountry. It doesn't always have to be a cliff face, it can just be a steep slope. It's definitely something to look out for. As far as climbing into a horse as a means of survival, it would totally work. The length of time it would work for is going to be limited, and I think the biggest mistake that he did was not taking that gut pile and cuddling it, because there's so much bacteria in guts that continue to stay alive and produce heat once the animal's already dead. So the guts are really where the heat is. There are certain kinds of clothing, like wool, that will still keep you warm and add some heat, even if they're wet. I think being naked, you're already dealing with losing heat through being wet and any gusts that are getting in through that hole, so it seems a little risky to take your clothes off if you don't have to. As he's pulling that gut pile out, he realizes it's warm. And why would you not have it at least kind of sealing up the door that you're in?I would give this clip a 7.Rating: 7/10"The Office" (2007)I think that it's pretty smart. It takes a lot of guts, no pun intended, pun intended, to be able to do something like this. I brought with me only the bare essentials. A knife, roll of duct tape, in case I need to fashion a shelter. I actually think someone on "Naked and Afraid" once brought a roll of duct tape as their survival item. And they're supposed to be professionals, so. And take a look at this. I tented my pants. I've made myself a nice pants-tent shelter. I love that clip. I think it's clearly ridiculous. And yet, at the same time, he probably did better than a lot of people in his situation would do. He was looking at what he had and trying to figure out how he could creatively use it. Now, I think taking your clothes off, like, your clothes are already a shelter, they're already like your first form of shelter. So taking them off to make a secondary shelter probably isn't gonna be great. But it's better than running around in circles until you're completely dehydrated and exhausted. Michael: Those are nature's best mushrooms! These little buggers are damn tasty as well. Eating the mushrooms is a terrible idea. Even when mushrooms are edible, a lot of them in the wild you have to cook. So, yeah, he would have died pretty quick in that situation. If it wasn't for the mushrooms, I would have given Michael's survival skills a 4, because he's at least thinking about what he needs to do and trying to be creative about it. And that's a great start.Rating: 4/10"The Grey" (2011) [wolf growls] [laughs]Well, he's in trouble. But how many times do wolves actually attack humans? And the answer is almost never. I think there's, like, a couple documented cases of that happening in North America. And I see wolves pretty much every single time I'm out in the woods. Wolves are terrified of people. If wolves wanted to hunt people, people wouldn't go in the woods, because they're amazingly effective predators. They outmatch us on every physical front. They just don't have any interest. We don't look like food. If you did run into a extremely desperate wolf who was thinking about the possibility that you might be a food source, then you want to make yourself look as big as possible. Put your arms up, start yelling, make some noise, kick some rocks at it. Wolves can run over 30 miles an hour, so running is going to do nothing.[glass shatters]I don't know who else has ever used electric tape, but it's not this rigid stuff. That stuff's just going to end up breaking off further probably before it penetrates the wolf's really thick fur and hide. And I could see him getting more hurt from doing that than any benefit it would serve. Creative. Again, really like his mindset. He's kind of just willing to do whatever and be creative to survive. I would give this clip a 1, because you're already starting on really false pretenses.I don't like when this myth of wolves being man-eaters, man-hunters is perpetuated.Rating: 1/10"Rambo: First Blood" (1982) [trap snaps]Ah! Somebody help me!I'm really super focused at this moment on what he used for a mechanism to get that much force on that trap, because that was impressively fast and strong. There's a lot that goes into making a trap like that. Sharpening a bunch of stakes and setting them into another log, I mean, we're talking hours. And then just setting the trap and coming up with the right tension on the mechanism that you're using to trigger it, and then finding a place to put it. A trap only works if you have someone walk into it. So the way you get around that is either to set a lot of traps, which would take a lot of time, or by funneling the movement in. So it's not something you can just do on the fly and expect to work.[yells]Don't push it. Camouflage is absolutely useful in survival, whether it's, you know, in a situation where you're clearly trying to run from someone, or maybe you're just hunting. He had, I think they were hemlock branches on his back. But unless he's hiding with his back towards everyone, it's not going to be useful, because the idea is to break up the form so that you don't look like a person. And I could say the same about his face camo. Like, maybe do a better job of, like, working with your face to make it look less like your eyes are standing out, and your eyebrows. I mean, his eyebrows were so dominant still. So creating some kind of color scheme on his face where his eyes and his eyebrows were less dominant would have done better than just, like, smearing stuff everywhere. I would give this a 5. Realistically, I struggle with the time invested in the trap. Some really accurate portrayals of survival skills in here.Rating: 5/10"The Hunted" (2003) The hand drill is amazing. Like, spot on, totally would work. I think the biggest problem I have is when you're trying to forge, it's really hard to get a temperature that's high enough to forge metal when you're using wood. I think wood, a wood fire can burn at about 900 or so degrees. You need about 1,500 to start moving metal. Otherwise, to get the metal that hot seems really unlikely to me. If I'm in a survival situation and I don't have a knife, I will use stone, all the time. It's obviously ideal if you have a steel knife, but by adapting the way that you do things, a stone knife or stone tools can actually accomplish the same tasks. Dealing with metal requires so many specific things that stone's going to work for whoever you need to kill or whatever task you need to accomplish. I basically just want a knife that has an edge that is going to be able to carve wood. So for traps, for skinning animals, having a smaller knife, anything where you're carving or doing fine, intricate work, something smaller is going to be better. I would give this clip probably an 8 out of 10. I think it was really surprisingly accurate. The one thing was the fire.Rating: 8/10"The Edge" (1997)[screaming][bear growls]Ugh, another example of animals just being out to get you in the most dramatic fashion. Really glad that the wild is not like that, because I would be dead a thousand times over. Grizzly attacks are definitely more common than wolf attacks, and it can happen. Usually a grizzly is attacking in a defensive situation. Either you surprised it, there's a mother-and-cub situation. Basically, you got too close, and it wants to get you away. It's not going to hunt you and consume you, per se, it's just trying to get you on the ground so you're not moving, and then it's going to take off and run away. Normally I think it would be more a case of that happening when it was a single person walking along versus, like, a whole group around fire, but it can happen.[screaming] [bear growls]Stay back! Depending on where the bear is, a lot of times they're pretty used to fire. If they're coming into camp and they're used to stealing food, I have a hard time thinking that if you have a log that's burning with embers at the end and you're shoving it into a bear's eye, that it's not going to at least slow him down a little bit. I wouldn't just wave it in his face. I think that's where they messed up a little bit. And everyone else, like, throw some stuff at him. They didn't even make contact. If they're gonna stay and fight, then fight. If it was a situation where you surprise the bear and the bear starts attacking and it's just trying to get away from you, then that's when you want to play dead. Stop moving. Don't move until the bear is long gone. Try to be in areas where you can see further than, you know, 20 feet, and carry bear spray. I would give this scene a 1. Not saying it doesn't happen, but this was very unrealistic, and the way they responded was just like, come on. There's better things you guys could've done.Rating: 1/10 "The Mountain Between Us" (2017)Ben?![yells]First of all, is that Kate Winslet? Which is just funny that she didn't, like, find a door this time to float on. There's a lot of things I'm not buying in this clip. She basically falls through a perfect hole of ice. I really struggle with the fact that the second she hits the water, she's just peacefully passed out. There's no struggle. There's no hyperventilating. Like, is she just, like, one of those fainting goats who comes into a bad situation and is no longer conscious? That's what it felt like watching this. She was immediately just out. And it can happen. You can pass out, and you can hyperventilate, breathe water, whatever, but it happened so soon. How did he find her in there? It's obviously deep water, and she apparently just is comprised of mostly fat underneath her clothes, because she was so buoyant. It seemed very improbable for someone to just float back to the surface and not float away to the sides of the hole and be able to be grabbed. He had to run so far to get to that hole. And her body is just right there. It's a little too convenient for me to be OK with. When he was pulling her body out of the ice, it was good that at least his body was kind of spread out. His body weight wasn't just centered on the edge. I would rate this clip probably a 1. I just don't understand any of it.Rating: 1/10"Into the Wild" (2007)This is -- this is Vaccinium uliginosum?So this is, um. If I'm trying to learn an area, I will absolutely bring some kind of book to help me identify what I'm looking at. Whether it be plants, animal tracks, things like that, it's super useful to learn. It's also very limited. You might get one picture at one time of the year of a plant, so to just have one resource and then use it to consume something that could potentially kill you, in my opinion, isn't a great idea. Out in the wild, you just have to be really careful. You are not going to be consuming something that you're not 100% certain of its identity. It's a really bad idea. And, furthermore, you're probably not getting that many calories. It's not going to be the matter between life or death. You can't really exist off of the few meager calories you're going to get from a lot of plant foods. So to run the risk of eating it, not knowing 100%, it's like a risk-versus-reward thing, and it loses out every time. You really can get into trouble very quickly, and there are certain things you can do that will really increase that. There's very few things you can actually control, but what you put in your body is one of those. So don't mess around with anything that you can't identify 100%. I would give this clip a 10. Honestly, it's definitely something that can and did happen.Rating: 10/10"Those Who Wish Me Dead" (2021)Hannah: Can you swim?[fire crackling]This is a remarkably unsmoky fire. Wildfires can travel really fast. They can basically travel as fast as the wind. That being said, it really seemed to be traveling on the ground a lot, and it didn't look like there was any brush there to catch on fire. But it can happen. And fires are super scary, and being caught in one would be absolutely terrible. If you can, getting upwind of that fire, trying to figure out the direction it's moving in and kind of move perpendicular to it and get out of the path of it, because the smoke can take you out. Anyone who's ever stood in campfire smoke, you know what that's like. A <keyword id="45847" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Forest-fire">forest fire</keyword> would clearly be way worse. You know, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, all these nasty things. You basically just want to get out of its path if you can. Sometimes that's kind of impossible. And there's unfortunately a lot of stories where people have been caught in situations like this and didn't make it out, even highly trained people. Listen to me. Take a deep breath, hold it, and lay back. I've actually read about people who've survived wildfires by being in pools or bodies of water. And kind of the key thing is that you want it to be deep enough that it's going to cover your whole body and not just immediately get too hot. The flames can actually pass over the top of the water, so if your body's sticking out, it can definitely be a bad situation. The problem with deep water would be getting exhausted or just passing out and drowning. But in certain circumstances, it could definitely work. I think it really looked like their only option, and people have definitely done it and survived.[takes deep breath]I think the one thing I would have done differently would be wetting an item of clothing. And then when I did have to come up and surface, you have a wet piece of clothing over your face, so it's cooling down that air. 'Cause that air is going to be super heated. Like, that goes into your lungs, and even if there's not smoke, just the superhot air can burn the inside of your lungs. That cool cloth over your face is going to not only protect your face from any falling embers, but it's going to cool down the air and just keep your skin cool as well. I would probably give this scene a 7. There's a lot of things with the fire I have trouble with, but they did try. They put thought into it. This could work. It's better than nothing, but there are ways it could have been improved.Rating: 7/10"The Way Back" (2010)[ice cracks]Irena, no![ice cracks]Ice is funny. So, you can't always tell the thickness of ice. You want it to be at least 4 inches to support your body weight. And there's a few factors that make it more dangerous, whether it's still or moving water, where it is, if it has snow on top, which can actually insulate it like a blanket and prevent it from becoming really thick. If you look at ice, generally, if it's clear, then it's going to be thick, but if it's kind of that milky color, it means it's gone through processes of thawing and freezing and probably isn't that thick or safe. And if you do have to go out on it, you don't want to be running. What you have is your entire body weight coming down hard and fast on one point that's small. So if you had to cross something, getting flat, spreading your body weight out, there's a million ways they could have done it.[ice cracking]There's definitely a risk of wet clothing. If they were to swim across and everything got wet and they couldn't start a fire, they could be in a bad situation. Being way back then, I think a lot of it would have been wool clothing, which actually will keep you warm when it's wet. It's not ideal to have it be wet, you're not going to have as much of the insulating properties, but you'd still be OK if you were moving, and they could just keep moving until their body heat dried their clothes out. People die in a few minutes in cold water. It's not from hypothermia. It's from going into that shock and drowning or losing mobility in their limbs and drowning.I would give the accuracy of this a 1.Rating: 1/10I think the biggest movie myth in wilderness survival is that it's always something big and dramatic that's coming and trying to get you. And in real survival, it's not like that. It's the little things. It's the hypothermia, it's dehydration, but it's not as exciting as a grizzly bear.

How aerial firefighters are trained to fight forest fires

That's well worth the risk that we take.Narrator: When wildfires spread, they can be too powerful for firefighters on the ground.Instructor: Flaps 10. Ready for the water.Narrator: That's where aerial firefighters come in.Trainee: Set power.Instructor: Power set. Feathers armed. Right there, feel that? There it is. Scooper 282 is inbound, loaded for the drop.Trainee: And three, two, one, drop.Instructor: Load's away.Narrator: These are the pilots who operate specially built aircraft to target a fire with more than 1,000 gallons of water, working with agencies like the US Forest Service and state governments.Tim Sheehy: We're seeing a massive <keyword id="41285" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wildfire">wildfire</keyword> threat worldwide, and it's straining the infrastructure of a system that was designed for a two- to three-month fire season into a persistent year-round threat. Our people are trained and tailored to ensure that we're providing the absolute best support on time, on target, because after all, the fires are won and lost on the ground.Narrator: In January, we spent three days with Bridger Aerospace in Mesa, Arizona, to see its <keyword id="6356223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pilot">pilot</keyword>s train and recertify ahead of what's expected to be a very busy fire season. CEO Tim Sheehy is a former Navy SEAL, and he's also getting his annual retraining to pilot the Super Scooper himself during wildfire season. This is the weapon these pilots use to fight fires: the $30 million CL-415EAF, more commonly known as the Super Scooper.Sheehy: They are the only aircraft that's purpose-built to fight fires. That's all they do, and they do it well.Tim Cherwin: This aircraft skims across the surface of the water, picks up 1,400 gallons of water, and you carry that water to a fire, drop that water on the fire to assist wildland firefighters who are on the ground. A few months goes by after not doing a lot of flying. It's good to get back in the seat, get some reps on the water, some scoops.Narrator: Pilots in training practice handling the aircraft in a variety of scenarios.Cherwin: Scooper pilots, you've got to be a master of all things. You're often dealing with multiple aircraft in an area. You have to be able to fly up in the altitudes, and you also have to be able to fly low level, down and dirty in the smoke, in the mountains, where there's low visibility and high terrain.Narrator: At 30,000 pounds, the Scooper is 30 feet tall and has a 93-foot wingspan. "Nimble" may not be the first word that comes to mind.Sheehy: We're flying it in extremely narrow canyons, very low altitude, banking high-g turns at a high rate of turn. Flying an aircraft this big that low in that dangerous of an environment is very rare.Farrell: It's gonna be, you know, max power. We're already at flaps 10. My name's Barrett Farrell, and I am a first officer on the Scooper here at Bridger Aerospace. In 1990, I was 4 years old. There was a <keyword id="45847" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Forest-fire">forest fire</keyword> on the mountain just south of where I grew up. I was able to watch a B-17 tanker dropping retardant. And after experiencing that, when I was about 12 years old, I always knew I wanted to be involved in aerial firefighting.Instructor: You have control?Trainee: I have control. Clear to take off.Instructor: Ready to go?Trainee: Yep.Narrator: In training, pilots react in simulated emergency scenarios, like an engine failure.Trainee: OK, simulated a right-hand engine failure.Narrator: Where they practice feathering, or adjusting the pitch of a failed propeller to reduce drag and fly safely to a landing spot.Instructor: Confirm right-hand ultimate feather?Trainee: Confirmed.Instructor: Feathering down. Has it feathered?Trainee: Positive feather.Instructor: Positive feather.Farrell: With an engine failure, we never know when that's going to happen, and so we want to train to make sure when we have that engine failure, the muscle memory is already there for what we have to do.Narrator: Pilots also practice making an emergency descent.Instructor: Hey, 172, 12 o'clock, right in front of us. 4,000.Trainee: OK, starting to level.Instructor: OK, we avoided the traffic.Sheehy: Training is focused on failures and being ready for those failures so that when they happen, we can respond quickly, with certainty and with assurance that what we're doing is the best outcome for what that failure has done.Narrator: But the most important part of training is practicing the aircraft's main function, performing the scoop and the drop.Sheehy: One of the things that's unique about aerial firefighting, of course, is you're not flying at 30,000 feet. You're not flying at 10,000 feet. That aircraft will come in, and it'll be dropping 100 feet, 50 feet.Instructor: Get ready for the water. Now, see how you kept that speed up? Keep that nose coming down. Right there, get ready to add some power, now. Ope. Airborne.Narrator: Before making contact with the water, the aircraft slows down to 90 knots.Farrell: Once we actually decide we're coming in to pick up a load of water, the flying pilot will call for "flaps on speed."Trainee: Flaps on speed.Farrell: We come in, we touch down, we're on the water for approximately 12 seconds with the probes down. I'll call "probes up."Trainee: Probes are up.Farrell: And now the aircraft will begin to accelerate so we can come up out of the water with a load of water. The most challenging part is definitely making sure you get the load of water where the ground firefighters want it. There's a lot going on with it when we're coming in to make that drop there versus our airspeed, what the wind's doing, and the topography of the terrain. It can be very challenging to make sure we get that right where they want it.Pilot: Since it's already on your side, how about you take a good look for me here, Jim. And then we'll make a left down one.Farrell: We're contacting the air attack, who's our communication between the ground firefighters and us, so we'll tell him, "Hey, we're inbound with a load."Instructor: Air attack, 262 inbound for the drop.Farrell: Now, once we're getting set up for the drop, captain will say, "OK, I'm lined up."Instructor: Scooper 282 is inbound, loaded for the drop.Farrell: And I'll reassure him that, "You're armed and ready for the drop."Instructor: You're armed, ready for the drop.Farrell: And once we get there, we'll actually press the water-drop button.Trainee: And three, two, one, drop.Farrell: And returning back to our water source to go pick up another load of water. Mainly the main feeling is like, man, I want to make sure I'm helping that guy on the ground, because he's the one who really needs this. And so that's the pressures I have.Cherwin: Training really never stops. You're always constantly studying. You're always constantly having to review your manuals and procedures and systems on the aircraft.Farrell: When you have other people from the community come out and tell you, "Thanks for the help," or, "Thanks for being here, guys," you know, "You saved my house," it lets you realize the big picture of what we're doing here.

That research predicts these <a href="https://www.insider.com/zombie-wildfires-in-siberia-smoldered-beneath-ice-reignited-2020-9">fires</a> will become more common as the Earth continues to warm. "It is possible that we may see more zombie fires in the future," Rebecca Scholten, a climate researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam who co-authored the study, told Insider. "We do see an upward trend in summer temperatures in boreal regions, and this goes in line with increases in annual burned area."Scholten's team found that zombie fires were, unsurprisingly, more frequent after hotter summers in which large fires burned across wide areas. The higher summer temperatures climb, the drier the subterranean vegetation and soil become - and that's what zombie fires consume as they hibernate. The bigger the fire, the deeper its flames can penetrate underground in the summer. That makes them more likely to survive the winter.<h2>Burn. Sleep. They found 74 zombie fires in those 16 years."We can identify zombie fires from satellites because they appear close to an old fire scar," Scholten said.In Canada, they found that fires pulled through the winter following the six hottest summers in the study's time frame. The analysis suggested that zombie flames can spread up to 650 feet (200 meters) underground. But no zombie fires survived the winter after the seven coolest summers.The scientific term for zombie fires is "overwintering," since the blazes hibernate underground for up to eight months like bears, then awaken four weeks after the snow starts melting. But Scholten said the colloquial moniker works."I like the term - it's a really visual and engaging description," she said. Overwintering fires require a specific habitat. They happen in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of North America and Siberia because the deepest soil layers there, called peat, are rich with organic matter. The smoldering flames can devour that matter, thereby staying alive even when the surrounding temperatures drop to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.Overall, zombie fires are still rare: The new research suggests they accounted for just 0.8% of the total burned area in Alaska and the Northwestern Territories during the 16 years studied. But because climate change makes both hot summers and large, intense wildfires more likely, zombie blazes may become more common, too.Atmospheric carbon-dioxide concentrations hit <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide#:~:text=Friedlingstein%20et%20al.-,2019).,%C2%B1%200.1%20ppm%20per%20year.">a record high</a> last year, and the last seven years have been the seven warmest ever recorded, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/2020-tied-for-warmest-year-on-record-nasa-analysis-shows">according to NASA</a>. The Arctic, in particular, is warming faster than the rest of the Earth.<h2>A vicious cycle</h2><div type="image" title="zombie fire" height="1746" width="2880" msid="82859006" hostid="261"></div>Perhaps the worst part of the zombie fire phenomenon is its self-perpetuating nature. When a fire burns through trees and vegetation, that emits carbon dioxide, exacerbating the climate problem.A zombie fire is double trouble: It burns through flora in the summer before its hibernation and during the spring after. In between, the peat it burns underground emits methane, a greenhouse gas with <a href="https://www.edf.org/climate/methane-crucial-opportunity-climate-fight">80 times</a> the warming potential of carbon dioxide. "What's special about fires in arctic and boreal regions is that the largest part of carbon emissions comes from the soils," Scholten said.Her group found that large overwintering fires in Alaska and the Northwest Territories emitted 3.5 million metric tons of carbon between 2002 and 2018.More emissions means more warming, which increases the likelihood of more zombie fires, which in turn create more emissions, and so on.<h2>It's possible to hunt down zombie fires</h2>Most fires are caused by people or lightning strikes. In Alaska and Canada, lightning season begins in June, which kicks off fire season.But zombie fires don't follow that schedule. They start "as soon as the snow melts and dry fuel is available," Scholten said. <div type="image" title="Mouth fire" height="1106" width="1475" msid="82859009" hostid="261"></div>So the new study suggests that by keeping tracking of summer temperatures and recording where the largest fires were each summer, firefighters might be able to predict and suppress zombie fires before they fully reignite.Doing so would be cheaper than fighting a full-blown fire, the study authors wrote, and would also limit the blaze's greenhouse-gas emissions.

At around $30 million, it's one of the most expensive aerial-firefighting aircraft ever made.Tim Sheehy: It's literally a boat with giant wings, and it's built like a tank. It looks like no other plane in the world.Narrator: The CL-415 Enhanced Aerial Firefighter can scoop and drop 1,400 gallons of water on wildfires in a matter of minutes. Compare that to this 1970s plane, which could only drop 200 gallons of water at a time.Sheehy: $30 million is very expensive for any aircraft. However, it's actually the most cost-effective aerial-firefighting asset.Narrator: Super Scoopers revolutionized aerial firefighting, and Insider got an up-close look with Bridger Aerospace to see how this aircraft is tailor-made to fight fires. Airplanes have been used to fight wildfires for almost 100 years, but early attempts weren't nearly as effective.Sheehy: In the '50s and '60s, almost all the aircraft used to fight fires were retired or salvaged World War II aircraft. Tanks were strapped to the middle, and they were used in a very haphazard, provisional manner.Narrator: Some of these makeshift firefighting planes were only able to drop 150 to 200 gallons of water at a time.Sheehy: Not really effective in today's world, but at the time, it was the best they could do.Narrator: Canadair was contracted to design a plane specifically to fight fires.Sheehy: So they designed the grandfather of this <keyword id="6420597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Airplane">airplane</keyword>, the CL-215. It looked very similar.Narrator: Which Viking Air Ltd. modernized in 2020, retrofitting the CL-215 with a new avionics system, turbine engines, and more.Sheehy: It was taken down to its bones and created, essentially, a new airplane.Narrator: Weighing in at 30,000 pounds, the CL-415EAF is 30 feet tall and has a 93-foot wingspan, just 24 feet shy of a Boeing 737's wingspan.Sheehy: When up close to it, you really appreciate just the massive size of it.Narrator: But despite its size, the aircraft was engineered to fly like a much smaller plane.Sheehy: When you look at them, they don't necessarily look like they'd be an aerobatic or stunt plane. We're taking a plane almost the size of a C-130, we're flying it into extremely narrow canyons, very low altitude, banking high-g turns at a high rate of turn. Flying an aircraft this big, that low, in that dangerous of an environment is very rare.Narrator: The Scooper is so nimble because of its flight-control surfaces, or aerodynamic devices that pilots use to adjust and control the aircraft. On any plane, the main control surfaces are the ailerons, which control the plane's roll; the rudder, which controls yaw, or the aircraft's direction; and elevators, which control the aircraft's pitch. And in the case of the Super Scooper, those flight-control surfaces are supersized.Sheehy: That's important, because when you're flying slow and big, you need to have a lot of aileron area, a lot of elevator area to be able to move that aircraft as quickly as you need to at those low speeds.Narrator: That's why this rudder is 25 square feet larger than that of a Boeing 737-900, even though the Super Scooper is 10 feet shorter and half as long. This is crucial for the Scooper. It needs to slow down to 90 knots, or just over 100 miles per hour, to perform a scoop. That's almost half the aircraft's standard cruising speed.Sheehy: Once you've identified your scoop site and you're coming in, you go through your pre-pickup checklist. One of those items is "probe down."<keyword id="6356223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pilot">Pilot</keyword>: Probes are down.Sheehy: The way the aircraft picks up water, as it does not stop or suck it up, there's no vacuum, it scoops it. And it scoops it through what you see here, two probes on either side of the keel of the aircraft, about the size of your hands put together, and as soon as you hit the water, they catch. You can feel it in the cockpit. You've got to be ready for that catch with the yoke.Pilot: Right there, get ready to add some power. Now.Sheehy: And the water begins filling almost immediately.Narrator: It takes the Scooper 12 seconds to fill its tanks with 1,400 gallons of water, during which time the pilot has to maintain the plane's speed and direction.Sheehy: Once the aircraft is full and the tanks are full, you retract the probes. There is a noticeable surge in the aircraft when those probes go up. Get the aircraft back up to speed and take off.Narrator: Now 11,000 pounds heavier, the aircraft relies on its design to ascend from the surface.Barrett Farrell: If you look at the wing, you can see it has a very large curvature to it. That's called camber, which creates an enormous amount of lift.Narrator: But aerodynamics aren't the only factor involved. The plane is outfitted with turboprop engines that generate more than enough power to lift it off the surface.Turner: They make 2,380 shaft horsepower, each side.Sheehy: These things are extremely durable. You never want to hit anything with them, of course, but if it's ash or debris being pushed up through the thermals of the fire, these engines are going to chew right through that and keep running.Narrator: All that enables the Scooper to ascend back up to its previous altitude in roughly three minutes.Pilot: Scooper 282 is inbound, loaded for the drop.Farrell: So, when we're lining up for a drop, the air attack will get us on target. They're in contact with the folks on the ground, who are requesting the water. We're factoring in the terrain, the wind, our altitude for when we need to press the button to make the drop.Narrator: When the pilot is ready to drop the load, they'll press the water-drop button...Pilot: And three, two, one, drop.Narrator: Opening the drop doors on the keel and releasing 1,400 gallons of water.Pilot: Load's away.Narrator: It only takes two seconds for the aircraft to drop its entire load, a very short window for the pilot to work with.Farrell: There is no targeting computer. It's all by feel and by experience.Narrator: But the Super Scooper's high-lift wing and turboprop engines allow it to attack forest fires from a lower altitude and speed than other firefighting aircraft. While planes like the 747 Supertanker and DC-10 make drops from between 200 and 800 feet, the Super Scooper can do so from as low as 100 feet above a fire.Sheehy: When you're fighting fire at low altitude, flying through mountains and smoke and trees, having the ability to quickly adjust to terrain variations, other aircraft in the area, or obstacles that emerge through the smoke is very important.Narrator: After performing the drop, the Scooper can simply head back to the water source to pick up another load, rather than refilling on the ground.Farrell: So, from drop to drop, it really depends on how close our water source is, but I've been on fires where we're dropping a load of water every six minutes.Narrator: The aircraft can go up to six hours between refuels, depending on conditions, meaning it can fight fires longer than other aircraft that need to refuel every two hours.Sheehy: Although the sticker price on the aircraft is very expensive, it can deliver 150,000 gallons in one service day, compared to a more traditional tanker that can oftentimes only do a small fraction of that. It's actually the most cost-effective aerial-firefighting asset.Narrator: And with a paint job like that, it can be hard to miss.Turner: It's a very flashy paint job on these aircraft, and it's one of the questions we're asked quite often, is, why is it painted the way it is? The goal is to be visible in this super-dense smoke. It's a very action-packed circuit when these guys are fighting the fires, and safety is the ultimate goal.Narrator: For aerial <keyword id="6359722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="firefighters">firefighters</keyword>, the next game-changing innovations aren't going to come to the planes themselves.Sheehy: The next ridgeline for aerial firefighting is going to be data. It's going to be understanding what the fire is doing, where it's going, where it's came from, and being able to share that data with as wide a population as possible. That can better inform our aerial response, better inform the ground response, and make sure that those citizens affected by the incident are given the best information possible to protect themselves, their families, and their livelihood.Narrator: In the meantime, aerial-firefighting aircraft like the Super Scooper are tasked with keeping forest fires in check.Sheehy: Flying this aircraft in the environment we fly it in, it's very exciting, it's very dangerous, but it's also very fun.
