India successfully test-fires its supersonic BrahMos cruise missile off the coast of Odisha

But it’s a small price to pay for a piece of the cybersecurity market that is estimated to grow to $13 to $15 billion over the next five years. “We already have a couple of large companies who are already using our Security Intelligence Centre. We’re starting to bundle it for small and medium enterprises as well,” said Vittal, citing that around 20 paying customers already live on the product. The Government of India is also one of the potential customers with it already working hand-in-hand with the National Security Advisor (NSA). Vittal highlighted that there’s a team of over 500 cybersecurity experts behind the ‘integrated and automated’ facility. As part of its plan to launch its rocket from foreign rocket ports, Chennai-based small rocket-maker <keyword id="7122982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="agnikul-cosmos">Agnikul Cosmos</keyword> Private Ltd on Wednesday said that it has signed an agreement with the <keyword id="10026792" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="alaska-aerospace">Alaska Aerospace</keyword> Corporation. In a tweet, Agnikul Cosmos said: "It's exactly 1 year since we presented our #MadeInIndia solution to honourable PM Shri @narendramodi ji. Today, humbled to take our homegrown product further as a global solution to customers across the world. Thank you, Alaska Aerospace." As per the agreement, Agnikul Cosmos will test-launch its 'Agnibaan' rocket from Alaska Aerospace's Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaskar on Kodiak Island in the US. Agnikul Cosmos, which is developing a small rocket with a capacity to carry 100 kg satellite into low earth orbit, said that the ability to launch from high latitude launch ports is a significant advantage. "Our first preference is to use Indian rocket ports at Sriharikota or the upcoming one at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu (both belonging to the Indian Space Research Organisation). If the customer prefers the launch to happen from some other country, we will ship the rocket and launch from there," Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO Agnikul Cosmos had told IANS earlier. In July 2020, Agnikul signed an MoU with Italian company Leaf Space for ground station services. Ravichandran had said the company has signed up with a launch port in south Australia and is exploring four to five launch ports across the world. The company is hopeful of signing a satellite launch contract in 2021 and the debut launch of its 'Agnibaan' rocket is planned for 2022. Agnikul Cosmos signs up with US-based Alaska Aerospace to test rocket

India and China on Wednesday agreed to hold a meeting soon between the senior commanders of their armies for an early disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), where the two countries are locked in a face-off since June this year. New Delhi and Beijing held their 19th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China border affairs on Wednesday. Both sides agreed that the next, i.e., the seventh round of meeting of senior commanders should be held at an "early date so that both sides can work towards early and complete disengagement of the troops along the LAC in accordance with the existing bilateral agreements and protocols, and fully restore peace and tranquility". The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (East Asia) of the Ministry of External Affairs. The Director General of the Boundary &amp; Oceanic Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs led the Chinese delegation. An official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said that the two sides reviewed the current situation along the LAC and had "frank and detailed discussions on the developments since the last meeting of the WMCC on August 20". Both India and China attached importance to the meetings between the two Defence Ministers and the two Foreign Ministers held earlier this month. They also noted that the agreement between the two Foreign Ministers should be "sincerely implemented to ensure disengagement at all the friction points along the LAC". The two sides positively evaluated the outcome of the sixth senior commanders' meeting held on September 21. They emphasised the need to implement the steps outlined in the joint press release issued after the last meeting of the senior commanders so as to avoid misunderstandings and to maintain stability on the ground, the statement said. The representatives of both the sides said that there was a need to strengthen communication, especially between the ground commanders. Both sides agreed to continue to maintain close consultations at the diplomatic and military levels. India-China agree to hold early meeting for disengagement along LAC

The VIRAL (Venus Infrared Atmospheric Gases Linker) instrument co-developed with the Russian federal space agency Roscosmos and the LATMOS atmospheres, environments and space observations laboratory attached to the French national scientific research centre CNRS has been selected by the ISRO after a request for proposals, it said in a statement. ISRO chairman K Sivan and CNES president Jean-Yves Le Gall held talks and reviewed the areas driving cooperation between France and India in space. "In the domain of space exploration, France will be taking part in ISRO's mission to Venus, scheduled to launch in 2025. CNES will coordinate and prepare the French contribution, the first time a French payload will be flown on an Indian exploration mission," CNES said in a statement. However, there was no comment from ISRO. After the Mars Orbiter Mission (<keyword id="1506013" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mangalyaan">Mangalyaan</keyword>) and Moon missions Chandrayaan-1 and 2, ISRO has set its eyes on Venus for carrying out its inter-planetary mission. France and India share a robust collaboration in arena of the space. It is one of the three nations with whom India collaborates in the strategic sectors of nuclear, space and defence -- the other two being the US and Russia. In March 2018, the two countries also issued a 'Joint Vision for Space Cooperation'. ISRO to carry first-ever French payload abroad Venus mission scheduled for 2025

The <keyword id="6355100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword> has conducted exercises with Russia and 'Quad' countries - an informal security forum comprising India, the US, Japan and Australia - in a message to China on getting a wider footprint in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indo-Pacific region is seen from the west coast of India to the US. The Indian Navy carried out a three-day bilateral maritime exercise with Japan in the north Arabian Sea from September 26, 2020 to September 28, 2020. It was the fourth edition of India-Japan Maritime bilateral exercise JIMEX, which is conducted biennially. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in October 2018 off Visakhapatnam in India. Naval cooperation between India and Japan has increased in scope and complexity over the years. Advanced level of operations and exercises took place during three days. It is indicative of the continued upswing in Indo-Japanese defence relations and continued efforts by both governments to work closely for a more secure, open and inclusive global commons, in accordance with international regulations. The helicopter carrier of Japan JS Kaga took part in the recent exercise. The Kaga and its sister ship the Izumo are being converted into aircraft carriers that will carry US-built maritime planes, the F35-B. India, Japan, China and South Korea are the countries now involved in what is seen in strategic circles as the Asian carrier race. The Australian Navy and Indian Navy carried out passage exercise in the East Indian Ocean Region from September 23 to September 24. The exercise involved participation of HMAS Hobart from the Australian side and Indian naval ships Sahyadri and Karmuk. In addition, an Indian maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters from both sides carried out coordinated exercise. The exercise, aimed at enhancing interoperability, improving understanding and imbibing best practices from each other, involved advanced surface and anti-air exercises including weapon firings, seamanship exercises, naval manoeuvres and cross deck flying operations. To boost mutual confidence and cooperation, a bilateral maritime exercise between Indian Navy and Russian Navy took place in the Bay of Bengal on between September 4 and September 5. "The exercise was aimed at imbibing best practices between the two navies," Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal told IANS. He also said that the exercise helped to further boost mutual confidence and cooperation between the two Navies and would reinforce the longstanding bond of friendship between the two countries. The exercise is known as 'Indra Navy' and is the 11th edition. It is a biennial bilateral maritime exercise between Indian Navy and Russian Navy. Indian Navy takes to seas with Russia and QUAD countries

The latest to join the list is Russia which just completed the first successful test of its own internet. And China already has the Great Firewall. A new draft of the Personal Data Protection Bill speaks of more restrictions and surveillance.  The first steps towards mass surveillance A day before Christmas, the Russian’s Ministry of Communications announced that the country has successfully unplugged the internet according to a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-50902496">BBC</a> report. It marks the implementation of Russia’s ‘sovereign internet’ law, which allows the government to block content in an ‘emergency situation’. <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/10/31/russia-new-law-expands-government-control-online#">Experts</a>’ main critique of the law is that it’s the first step towards dismantling the internet. The definition of an ‘emergency situation’ is vague but the government insists that the main purpose is to prevent cyberattacks. <a href="https://www.cpomagazine.com/data-protection/new-india-data-protection-bill-may-give-government-unlimited-access-to-citizen-data/">Critics</a> in India find similar faults with the Personal Data Protection Bill. Though the government won’t have the power to remove online content, it will be able to track and monitor accounts that it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/iamai-flags-ambiguities-in-draft-data-protection-bill-seeks-clarity-on-classification-consent/articleshow/72282044.cms">deems to be a ‘threat’</a> — essentially creating a backdoor that can be opened at any time without having to lift a finger. Another way to think about it that the new data privacy laws will apply to everyone, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/centres-exemption-powers-in-draft-data-protection-bill-stir-up-industry-worries/articleshow/72461296.cms">except for the government</a>. The trend of data protection through localisation India is already following in China’s footsteps with its data localisation laws, according to a report by the Eurasia Group and Vontobel. They say it’s partly a way to protect domestic technology companies from foreign competition. And while that may be true, multiple studies show that India companies don’t have the adequate cybersecurity infrastructure in place to protect against data theft.  The level of a vulnerability is worryingly high when one takes into considering that the country has already made data localisation mandatory for financial transactions of its citizens. As experts point out, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/data-localisation-wont-help-local-firms-or-improve-privacy-but-it-could-cost-india-43-billion/articleshow/72251167.cms">data localisation may keep the data from foreign firms</a> — but it also creates a single point of attack. It won’t be cheap either. According to a report by ICRIER and IAMAI, the restrictions would hamper cross-border data flows costing India up to $43 billion in trade. The lingering question The Personal Data Protection Bill 2019 is still under discussion leaving the possibility open for the proposed laws to be changed before they’re official. "Effective data privacy and personal information protection are critical pillars for driving consumer trust in the rapidly growing digital economy," said the country manager for BSA India, Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy. And he rightly points out, maintaining trust is critical as cybersecurity threats are only set to increase in 2020 as technology continues to evolve and legislation struggles to keep up. The combination of data localisation and tracking of users online activity makes a for a dangerous mixture that could have India becoming the next country to splinter the internet along with China, Iran, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
