"Today 57 per cent of all buyers of the All-New Thar are first time car buyers and a significantly large share of all bookings are for the automatic variants," the company said in a statement on Monday. The all-new Thar will be available in two trims, namely "AX &amp; LX", with prices starting at Rs 9.80 lakh for AX series and Rs 12.49 lakh for LX series. It is powered by two all-new engines "the 2.0L mStallion TGDi" petrol engine, and "the 2.2L mHawk" Diesel engine. "These engines are offered with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed torque converter <keyword id="6747735" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="automatic-transmission">automatic transmission</keyword>, with an authentic 4x4 manual shift transfer case with a low ratio," the company had said on Oct 2nd. Mahindra Thar 2020 crosses 15,000 bookings — 57% are first time car buyers

Utility vehicles major <keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword> (<keyword id="46869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MM">M&amp;M</keyword>) on Thursday said it is recalling 1,577 units of its SUV Thar with <keyword id="10704282" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="diesel-powertrain">diesel powertrain</keyword> to replace faulty camshaft, an engine part. The Mumbai-based auto major said it would undertake proactive inspection and replacement of camshaft on a batch of 1,577 units of <keyword id="10703974" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="thar-diesel-variants">Thar diesel variants</keyword>, manufactured between September 7 and December 25, 2020. "A machine setting error at the supplier's plant, on specific dates, may have affected camshafts in some engines of the diesel Thar," M&amp;M said in a regulatory filing. Keeping with the company's stringent quality standards and exercising abundant caution, it has proactively engaged in this limited recall and offered inspection and subsequent rectification, <keyword id="6370553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="free">free</keyword> of cost, the automaker noted. The company said the affected Thar customers will be individually contacted by the company. As an endeavour to ensure a hassle-free experience for its customers, the company is proactively carrying out this activity, it added. While many had thought people would become more careful about their spending, the pent up demand after the first few months of the lockdown meant good enquiries and sales once things started opening up. For people, their priorities changed. Health and wellness of their own and of their loved ones became top-of-mind for most people. “With this consciousness, people also became more conscious of the spaces they wanted to buy. Today consumers are not just thinking about the size of the house, it is just as much about how the spaces are being utilized. People are thinking of whether developers are providing enough open, outdoor space, considering in this new world, being in a closed area is not as safe,” explained Oza. With lots of people having to work from home, how the homes are more conducive to this new lifestyle has also become an important part of people’s considerations and the player has been listening to its consumers and innovating accordingly. For example, in its Happinest project in Tathawade (Pune), they have added outdoor, secluded working pods to make the overall experience of working from home more comfortable. People are also becoming more conscious about the locality they choose and also giving more importance to sustainability. “The lockdown created appreciation in all of us for nature, when you could hear the chirping of birds during the start of the lockdown. This consciousness is great for us as a brand because we've been very conscious of the environment and are probably one of the few brands that has a 100% green portfolio. We are extremely conscious, not just of the end game but even in how we construct. Our construction processes are environment-friendly and we try and source raw materials within a certain catchment area to reduce our carbon footprint. In fact, we've seen it across the few launches we've made and also across some of our existing properties. Some of it has been pent-up demand but the next few months will really tell us if this is a long-term sustained change coming back to the category or not. We have also realized that challenging or questioning the status quo is more an issue with brands than with consumers,” he said. Explaining how consumers are open to these changes, he said that their launch of Happinest, Palghar was done completely virtually and in a contactless manner. “It was a risk and we were not sure how it would pan out. We had to get used to the fact that for those months, social media and digital platforms were our only modes of communication. Fortunately, we were already present on digital so it wasn’t a very big move for us. Also, real estate as a category hasn't had the advantage of TV. Print is to real estate what TV is to FMCG, that's our large scale imagery-building medium. While that has its advantages, it also has its limitations when it comes to manifesting your brand. And what's been a big blessing of the last one year is that we have realized the power of digital and therefore the ability to use the audio visual mode of communication on digital,” said Oza. Giving us a sense of what its marketing pie looks like, Oza said, "If we were spending Rs 100 on print earlier, we now might be spending between Rs 20-40, depending on the project and segment. So we've started coming back, but not too much. Similar with outdoor. Digital which was between Rs 20-40, has now gone up significantly." So will real estate ever invest as much on traditional mediums as they used to pre-pandemic? “To be honest, the jury's out on that. We've started using outdoors selectively and have some print, but that has been a very small part of our overall spends. We are still largely focused on digital and I think in the future too, our focus will be skewed a little more towards digital. This will also force the traditional mediums to re-evaluate the role they play in our lives and innovate. And that's good for everyone because it helps sharpen and clarify the thinking and also helps increase efficiencies,” concluded Oza.

For that, the country could turn inward instead of outward to plug the gap.  “While girls enrolling in science for higher studies in India has seen an increase, the number of women entering the workplace is not in the same proportion,” the UN said. This is a global problem. Women represent a minority in the world of science at a mere 30%; and only 35% of the STEM students are women. India however is a paradox where it has graduates but not researchers. “We need a dedicated strategy not only for increasing the representation of women in the talent pipeline for STEM jobs, but also for ensuring that they thrive, incentivizing them to remain in these high-paying jobs and institutionalizing organizational cultures that enable women to advance in these fields,” Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN Women <a href="https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2020/2/statement-ed-phumzile-international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science">said on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science</a> on February 11. Less published work, less pay One of the major reasons for the low participation is the gender pay gap. Despite the ground-breaking research and performance, women in the field of STEM are known to be paid less for their research work compared to men — not progressing as much in their careers thereby. “Girls are often made to believe they are not smart enough for STEM, or that boys and men have natural affinity for the field,” UN countered. It also said that the women in the field publish fewer research papers across the world. Here too, India is an exception. A recent study published in ‘<a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/science-technology/gender-balance-in-scientific-research-improving-in-india-study-63313">Journal of Informetrics</a>’ said that one in three research papers published in India, was written by a female author — in over 186 fields as per the scopus database. In fact, in subjects such as dentistry, psychology and humanities, women were almost at par with men with one female author for every two male authors. India’s push for women in science and research It is possible that women might be getting little recognition and lesser pay in spite of these achievements - encouraging fewer women to come into the field. Women constitute merely 15% of faculty positions in science. In the research programmes, women account for a third of the PhD awardees. Not just in STEM but India has a long way to go before they attain gender parity across fields and industries. According to the <a href="https://www.weforum.org/reports/gender-gap-2020-report-100-years-pay-equality">World Economic Forum Gender Gap Report</a>, it will take 257 years to eliminate the prevailing gender gap in the workforce, globally. India ranks 112th in the Global Gender Gap Index in 2020. Therefore, the universities are now striving to achieve something that has been taken for granted for long — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/iits-and-nits-will-now-be-ranked-on-how-many-women-they-educate-and-employ/articleshow/73296855.cms">gender parity</a>. In January 2020, the ministry of science and technology said that it will now rank institutions — on gender equality, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/top-institutes-will-now-be-graded-on-gender-equality/articleshow/73283922.cms">according to </a>the Times of India report. And these ranks will be for those offering STEM courses. As many as 20 Indian institutions — including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Science (NITs) — have joined hands to facilitate it. The government aims to rope in over 90 institutions as a part of the new grading system. “This will definitely give a much needed thrust to the inclusion of women in academia. However a key challenge will be to define the terms of how institutions will effectively measure gender equality. They should not merely execute gender equality on paper, rather it should ensure inclusion in education and employment,” Neeti Sharma, VP, TeamLease Services told Business Insider. India tops the world in producing female graduates in STEM but ranks 19th in employing them

Rapidly increasing carbon dioxide emissions and growing concerns over depleting <keyword id="560717" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fossil-fuel">fossil fuel</keyword> reserves have forced the mankind take a hard look at itself and the blatant greed humans had displayed over the past century. Now let us add India to that equation and see where we stand. It is the second most populous nation and has what the marketers like to call a ‘thick layer’ of fast-earning, middle-class consumers. 
 
It means our people are now moving up the income and the location ladders. Most of them are earning more than their predecessors and most of this new money is coming from location shift as people move from rural areas and smaller towns to big cities. There was a time when the Indian dream evolved around ‘Roti, kapda aur makaan’ (food, clothes and shelter). But with the markets opening up in the 90s, the rapid inflow of modern consumer goods took place and ‘owning a car’ became a part the modern Indian dream. However, a huge number of personal vehicles running on petrol or diesel would surely undermine India’s role in reducing carbon emission. Does it mean Indian consumers must give up on their dream? Or is it possible to tweak it a little and pave the way for eco friendly electric cars? 
 
Yes, India needs electric cars. But will they flourish here? According to Deepak Ahuja, chief financial officer of Tesla Motors, “India is a huge potential market where we need to be. I think sometime in 2015 seems to make sense to enter India, but it’s difficult to make an official announcement.” 
 But the reason why the global leader in <keyword id="46640" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="electric-car">electric car</keyword> manufacturing space cannot pin a specific date for launching in India is quite obvious – there are many gaping holes in infrastructure that need to be plugged before electric cars can become a wide reality in the country. 
 
Major challenges 
The most crucial challenge faced by the electric car industry in India lies in the way India produces electricity. Around 70% of the country’s electricity is generated from coal, which itself is a limited resource. This defeats the entire purpose of shifting power vehicles to electricity because at the end of the day, Indians will be still burning up natural resources and the reduced emission from electric cars will negated by the huge coal usage, required for additional power generation for charging stations. Unless India starts producing most of its electricity from renewable energy sources like solar or hydropower or from nuclear plants, the whole concept of electric cars would be moot. 
 
The next challenge for electric car owners in India is a serious lack of charging stations in the country and this includes the metros as well. Electric cars are expensive and when an Indian consumer sees that his expensive car cannot be used for a long trip as there are too few charging stations, he is less likely to say a good word about such cars. In contrast, this is where the CNG-enabled (compressed natural gas) vehicles steal the show in India. They are cheap, cleaner and most cities and towns in India have CNG stations for refilling. 
 
Government’s role 
On the bright side, the Indian government is actively working its way towards ensuring that 5-7 million electric cars should be running throughout the country by 2020. Keeping that in view, the Finance Ministry is set to offer subsidies worth Rs 14,000 crore to auto companies that are building electric cars. Mahindra Motors already produces the Reva, a small electric car, and runs a factory that produces 40,000 units annually. Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki are also set to benefit from this huge subsidy once they start producing electric cars in the country. Delhi government will also announce a subsidy for car owners who want to shift from fuel to electric by adding a special conversion kit. But the big question remains – when will India start producing most of its electricity from renewable sources? 
 
Electric car market in India As we mentioned earlier, Tesla does have plans to launch operations in India in the near future. It is most likely that the company will start with the Model S Sedan or the Model X SUV, which is already running in China. In the list of available options for electric cars in India, the key name is <keyword id="160726" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahindra-Reva">Mahindra Reva</keyword> NXR. Soon-to-be-launched cars include the hatchback called Tata Megapixel (expected price – Rs 5-7 lakh) and the luxury hatchback Nissan LEAF (Rs 24-28 lakh). 
 
Pricing of these cars is going to be a crucial factor in India. Also, cars like the BMW i8, which are launched as CBUs (completely built units) and hence priced at Rs 1.35 crore, will be a distant dream for the middle class. Unless major car brands start building the electric variants within the country, the electric car industry cannot really take off. As car lovers and environmentalists, we can only keep our fingers crossed.
