“We never scaled down. We grew 10x the size last year. We reached the target of 70,000 food orders in a day very recently. In January we also hit operational profitability. 99% are automated and 100% are profitable at an aggregate. Our team grew too,” said Saurabh Kochhar, CEO, <keyword id="1666592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foodpanda">Foodpanda</keyword> India and Chief Business Officer (Global), at SURGE, the Indian edition of the planet’s largest tech conference. 
 
Though the government has done a lot, but it has failed to solve the basic infrastructure problem that every food delivery startup has to face in India. 
 
“I think the challenges are more from the infrastructure side. Internet first is our first problem. We have more than 1000 food partners with us and to be able to seamlessly integrate with them we need technology and integrate them as such we are able to work on 2G connection. The third is to be able to know how to use this technology,” he said. 
 
In India GPS doesn’t work, postal code system doesn’t work. In US they have maximum 3-4 houses under one postal code but in India there are about 40,000 houses under one postal code. 
 
He even added that the Industry as a whole right now is going through an external pace where the sentiments are low. They do not understand the specifics.

“There’s been a lot. Let’s see how much of it to come out. We definitely need a lot of clarity under that. Especially food tax is a mess. Every state follows its own taxation. This is a nightmare for us. We want a simplified taxation system. Second, some regulations around the market places. Currently online mediators and mediators are not regarded as a part of the market. There’s no law holding us. That doesn’t mean we are outside the law. Clear definition of how they are going to give tax benefits for 3 years.”

Foodpanda wishes to be at least 2-3 times the size than what we are today.

If these regulations are cleared, we would like to do it. It is a great idea. We did it few years back but had to stop it due to government regulations. One should also note that Foodpanda do not have drone delivery system even in other countries though Saurabh thinks it is a great idea.

It commenced similar discussions with Zomato's rival <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> last year.</li><li>India's <keyword id="6376068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery">food delivery</keyword> market is estimated to be growing at a quarterly rate of 15%.</li><li>Softbank is expected to make an investment decision by the end of 2018.</li></ul> In the aftermath of Walmart’s $16 billion acquisition of e-commerce upstart Flipkart, Softbank, a Japanese tech giant and investor, looks set to double down on the Indian market. The Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/softbank-now-in-talks-to-put-zomato-on-its-menu/articleshow/64198467.cms">reported today </a>that Softbank was engaged in initial talks with Zomato, a food delivery service, to take a stake in the company. In fact, a source told ET that Softbank was scouring the Indian food delivery market for deals, with plans to infuse anywhere between $200 million and $400 million in a worthy candidate. The Japanese company had reportedly commenced talks with Swiggy, another food delivery service, late last year to invest as much as $250 million in the latter’s growth, although nothing seems to have come of it yet. India’s food delivery market, which is dominated by Zomato and Swiggy, is growing fast. Earlier this year, RedSeer Consulting, a research and consulting firm, estimated that the market grew at a quarterly rate of <a href="http://redseer.com/newsletters/food-tech-market-updates-feb18/">15% last year</a>, with daily order volumes more than doubling to 460,000 by September 2017. In April, RedSeer also pegged the size of the market <a href="http://redseer.com/newsletters/food-tech-market-updates-apr18/">at $740m</a>. The increasing level of interest in India’s food delivery market is thought to be reminiscent of the investor hype surrounding ride-hailing services a few years ago when Uber entered the country. Interestingly, Softbank has a stake in both Ola and Uber. Both companies have or had their own food delivery services. Ola <a href="https://www.olacabs.com/media/press/ola-and-delivery-hero-join-forces-in-india">acquired Foodpanda</a>, a food ordering app, in December last year with plans to invest $200 million in the company. Meanwhile UberEats was launched in May 2017 and <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/uber-eats-sees-50-pc-growth-first-year-operations-focus-tier-2-markets-81332">is said to be going strong</a>. Softbank is expected to make an investment decision by the end of 2018. Last month, the company’s CEO, Masayoshi Son, said that Softbank was on track to invest <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/set-to-overachieve-on-10-billion-india-investment-target-softbank-ceo-masayoshi-son/articleshow/63966163.cms">more than its original target of $10 billion</a> in India by 2024. It’s already invested $8 billion since 2014, partly through its <keyword id="4031888" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vision-fund">Vision Fund</keyword> for tech investments, making bets on the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-softbankgroup-gcl-solar/softbank-chinas-gcl-team-up-for-930-million-indian-solar-venture-idUSKCN1H909S">solar energy,</a> <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/softbank-group-paytmecommerce-stake/softbank-alibaba-to-invest-445-million-in-paytm-e-commerce-idINKCN1H91OB">e-commerce</a> and <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/softbank-vision-fund-oyo/">hotel booking</a> markets to name a few. It is currently said to be mulling <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/softbank-in-talks-to-invest-big-money-in-paytm-mall/articleshow/64152935.cms">a $3 billion investment</a> in Paytm Mall, the e-commerce arm of Paytm, in which it already owns a 21% stake, pending a possible exit from Flipkart. The news of the possible investment in Zomato follows speculation regarding the launch of a <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/2018/05/16/softbank-s-son-is-said-to-eye-another-100-billion-for-fund-2-0#gs.3Va=5TY">second Vision Fund </a>by Softbank. The new fund is expected to also have a $100 billion corpus and could launch as early as 2019.

Pikup.ai uses artificial intelligence, computer vision and sensor fusion to provides seamless AI-powered solutions for businesses. “As we advance on our mission to build mobility for a billion people, we are investing in futuristic technology solutions that will shape the future of mobility in India and the world,” said Ankit Bhati, Co-founder &amp; CTO, Ola in a statement. Ola has been investing heavily into technologies for its Ola Mobility wing. It had also recently set up a technology and innovation centre in the Bay Area. The company is planning to hire over 150 engineers at the new centre, to develop next-generation technologies in mobility. These engineers will be hired across domains like Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, data science, engineering, and product development. Ola has made several acquisitions in the past – food delivery startup Foodpanda, logistics startup Ridlr, rival ride hailing company Taxiforsure, transportation startup Geotagg and mobile payments platform Qarth. Ola has been racing ahead in the Indian mobility space, as it continues to be in a fight for the finish with its arch rival Uber. Ola isn’t just fighting Uber in India but also in global markets like Australia, UK etc. Both Ola and Uber have been investing into new technologies with multiple acquisitions. Uber had recently <a href="https://www.geekwire.com/2019/uber-acquires-seattle-startup-mighty-ai-fuel-push-self-driving-cars/">acquired</a> Seattle-based startup Mighty AI, taking its self driving car vision ahead.

In Singapore, UberEats promises a delivery time of 35 minutes with a S$3 (HK$17) charge, which is waived for now to attract more customers.However, major market players foodpanda and Deliveroo did not seem too worried about the potential challenge, saying more competition would help spur business growth.Alexander Roth, managing director of foodpanda's local operations, said more market players would help increase public awareness and patronage of online food delivery services."This is a relatively new concept in Hong Kong," Roth told the Post, saying "more rivals mean more opportunities"."With the entry of new players to the market, we can take our education efforts a step further to demonstrate how the trend of online food delivery is picking up and getting more public attention," he added.Foodpanda launched in Hong Kong in 2014, offering menus from more than 1,000 restaurant partners, with about 400 delivery staff on hand. It reported more than 500 per cent growth in orders last year, and 450 per cent so far this year.Roth said downloads for the foodpanda app had exceeded 450,000 and 70 per cent of transactions were completed via the app. Despite the possible threat of UberEats offering cut-rate prices, Roth said they had a bigger vision for foodpanda, which provides free deliveries and relies on commissions paid by restaurants."We do not concentrate on competitors ... We do our best to be a great partner to restaurants, not just a delivery provider or transactional platform," he explained. "We are committed to really help them improve their business, not just generating quick additional revenue."Roth added that each employee, including himself, had to take turns to make deliveries.Brian Lo Ka-chung, Deliveroo Hong Kong's general manager, agreed that more competitors would spread the message about the convenience of ordering restaurant food via an app."In the past, Hongkongers didn't realise that they could use an app to make delivery orders. More competition can help spur market growth and raise customer awareness," he said.Deliveroo launched in November last year with a delivery charge of HK$20 for every order and commissions paid by partner restaurants. UberEats is eyeing a slice of a billion dollar market in Hong Kong

<ul><li>The institutional food-tech company, HungerBox, is behind the cafeterias in most white-collar companies in India.</li><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, co-founder and CEO Sandipan Mitra explains how digital cafeterias are now a necessity for companies to use — not just a vanity product.</li><li>He explains how going for lunch at some of the big wig companies is going to change as their new cafeteria management solution kicks into gear starting today, May 19.</li></ul>If you’re wondering what going back to work is going to be like after the coronavirus lockdown lifts, food is probably not too far from your mind. HungerBox, an institutional food-tech company, caters to some of the biggest white-collar private sector employers in India is probably going to be the company behind some of the changes you may see in your cafeterias. In an exclusive interview with Business Insider India, co-founder and CEO of HungerBox Sandipan Mitra explains how the company is helping some of the big wigs in the corporate world ensure that their cafeterias are COVID same and how menus are going to change. “Ten out of 11 of India’s largest white-collar private sector employers are our clients today, In total, 126 of the largest corporates in India are our clients. Through them, we manage over 550 cafeterias across more than 20 cities,” he said. <div type="image" title="sandipan mitra_edited" msid="75820291" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Co-founder and CEO of HungerBox, Sandipan Mitra&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> During the lockdown, HungerBox has seen a 50% increase in clients — with higher demand for small and mid-sized companies. “This is now a necessity, not just a vanity platform. Not just in the corporate world but food courts and malls — we are even in discussion with movie theatres,” said Mitra. He said that HungerBox is 3.5 times larger than their closet competitors, like Zomato Food at Work or GoKhaana. Going for lunch in the post-COVID world There are three main differences that employees are going to have to face as they trickle back into offices. The first is that cafeterias are going to use a shift system to ensure social distancing and avoid overcrowding. “We build AI and ML algorithms on our platform that ensure that — say like if say a cafeteria has 500 seats — at any given point of time, only 250 will be accessible,” said Mitra. <div type="image" title="Times Internet food court" msid="75820146" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Times Internet food court&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Everyone will be allocated at a particular time. Only once you leave will your colleague get entry. “So at no point of time, is there more than 250 people in the cafeteria,” he added. The second difference will be in the food items. “The entire food palette is undergoing a revamp, all these immunity-enhancing items will be available in the cafes,” said Mitra. The team at HungerBox looked at the Aarogya Setu App and took inputs from other stakeholders, which listed out all the immunity enhancing food items. “Ironically, it indicated all the traditional food items — like turmeric and jeera,” he said. And, if you’re one of the people who orders food directly to your desk, expect the food to be a little less messy. “Parallelly, desk delivery is something that has picked up where food is delivered to your cubicle. So what is delivered at the cubicle, cannot have a lot of gravy, cannot have a lot of liquid items. So we had to change the menus to more drier items,” Mitra explained. <div type="image" title="Food Court at TCS" msid="75820162" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Food Court at TCS&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The last, and probably one of the most important changes, is that paying with cash will no longer be an option. “There are 3.2 lakh currency notes that are exchanged at a cafeteria — a midsize cafeteria — in a month. We have tied up with all contactless payment methods, put it on the app so all employees can pay for the food without using cash. We said that we will not have any more cash transactions,” said Mitra. How do you know that your food is “COVID safe”? HungerBox claims that they were listing out some of the main vulnerabilities in the system two days into the lockdown. Their entire management suite, from start to finish, is aimed at ensuring that the food is prepared in a safe manner, delivered at the right temperatures, and remains contactless on its journey from where it was made till when it reaches your platter. <div type="image" title="Food Court at Wipro" msid="75820183" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Food Court at Wipro&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> “We built an entire product suite where the guys have to upload time-stamped photographs wearing their mask, hand gloves and headgear during the preparation of food and that they wash their hands every half an hour,” explained Mitra. All of it will be uploaded to ensure that there is evidence to back up the claims, so that the administration and the employees don’t have to depend on hearsay. But, won’t most of the people still be working from home? Work-from-home isn’t a new concept, it’s just a necessity of the lockdown. According to Mitra, the end result won’t be more than 10% of employees continuing to work from home once the lockdown lifts — even if some are looking to employ the 50/50 or 25/25 work model. <div type="image" title="Infosys food court" msid="75820194" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Infosys food court&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> “In our projections to our board is that we have assumed that there are going to be 10% people who would permanently not come back due to more flexible work from home opportunities,” he said. Even if there’s 20% attrition in the market, Mitra claims that HungerBox will more than make up for it with its client growth, the platform becoming more relevant and margin will widen. HungerBox is the second venture for Mitra after Just Eat India. Even before Swiggy and Zomato were in the online food delivery system, Just Eat India was already swarming the space. When the smartphone market exploded in 2012, Just Eat India was at its peak. Come April 2015, the platform was sold to FoodPanda in an all-cash transaction. From B2C, Mitra decided to go into the B2B space because he through the institution's food space needed to be redone and evolve through the use of deep technology. That’s when he launched HungerBox in 2016. They also plan to sell these drones to companies for $5000 each. While things get cleared up in the sky, a Chinese e-commerce giant JD announced last week that it is taking things a little more realistically with unmanned drones that look like mini vans. According to JD, the drones are around a meter in length and are capable of selecting their own routes; drive themselves fitted with smart obstacle avoidance technology. When the drone arrives near the customer, they will be notified via the JD mobile app where they can come out near the device, put in a key to unlock the cargo area and pick up their package.
