A few days back, Amazon had made a cut into a unique periphery. Following the same footprint, now it’s Flipkart. The Bengaluru based ecommerce major has introduced its mobile app for the sellers. 
 
Aimed at building and strengthening the overall marketplace ecosystem, the ‘Seller Hub’ App will help merchants on the Flipkart platform to manage their businesses from anywhere and at any given time. 
 
 
From listings, orders, returns, payments and order fulfillment, the on-the-go solution will provide sellers real-time data on all aspects of their business. 
 
Ankit Nagori, SVP – Marketplace, Flipkart said, “Focused at creating ease and convenience for sellers across the nation, this app will help sellers reach out to 45 million Flipkart customers on-the-go. ” 
 
 
 
“An extension of products and services offered to our sellers, this new app will offer an even playing ground for sellers from both metros and small cities. Flipkart is wooing sellers with a collaboration that will help them file their taxes online

Even as <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> is claiming that altering seller fees for certain categories and price ranges has made it the most low cost marketplace for sellers and claimed to be a favourite among the sellers, the latter doesn’t think so. "When we reduced rate cards, we reduced fixed fee, shipping fee and collection fee and also offered a 10-20% discount for gold and silver (tier I and II category) sellers," Nishant Gupta, director of marketplace, Flipkart, told ET. Flipkart stated 60-65% sellers across different categories passed on the benefit to consumers with reduced prices and are seeing a 25% jump in sales. "Sellers we have interacted with have confirmed our assessment of it (the change affecting on cost of doing business). Gold sellers will be earning a lot more on Flipkart now," Gupta told ET. However, sellers said Flipkart still remained costlier than <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>. "They have reduced prices for very few categories and for a specific price range. Even with that, Flipkart was minimum 10-15% costlier than Amazon (before the latter's fee change)," an <keyword id="4437249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce-sellers-association-of-india">E-commerce Sellers Association of India</keyword> spokesperson, a group of about 1,500 online merchants, told ET, adding “With the current fee revision from Amazon effective from May 18, the marketplace fee deduction of Amazon and Flipkart will be comparable." Some sellers are unhappy with Amazon's fee structure change too, with a group writing to founder <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword>. "We are very competitive in terms of overall cost of doing business for the seller," said Gupta of Flipkart. "It is our constant endeavor to remain the most competitive marketplace in India. We are confident our sellers look at the aggregate cost of doing business on our platform and compare that with the overall value they derive out of our platform,” Amazon spokesperson told ET.

Sellers are not agreeing with Flipkart’s claims. Here’s why

Flipkart announced it will buy eBay.in in April this year when it raised $ 1.4 billion from global technology majors eBay, Tencent and Microsoft. In exchange of an equity stake in Flipkart, eBay had made a cash investment of $500 million and sold its eBay.in business to Flipkart. "Effective immediately, Flipkart will own and operate eBay.in, which will remain an independent entity as part of Flipkart," Flipkart said in a statement. "As a result, Flipkart customers will get expanded product choices with the wide array of global inventory available on eBay while eBay customers will have access to a more unique Indian inventory from Flipkart sellers," the statement said. "Our coming together directly benefits Indian customers and sellers for whom we want to provide the best possible e- commerce experience. To address this, Flipkart ran a special offer on loans through Flipkart's Growth Capital programme which is designed specifically to enable independence for MSMEs who operate online. "Through the programme, most of the transacting sellers can avail credit at competitive interest rates with an approval time of one day and disbursal within 48 hours. A 3-month moratorium period has been implemented on existing loans," informed the company. Further, any additional amount on sellers' existing loans sanctioned during this period will have an extended financial limit with a 6-month moratorium period. Flipkart also extended certain ongoing premium services availed by sellers to include the lockdown period in their subscription terms so that their investment is not hampered for a stipulated period of time. Under the ‘<keyword id="7933169" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-samarth">Flipkart Samarth</keyword>' programme, it has supported the livelihood of over 500,000 artisans, weavers and micro enterprises across the country.

It is now taking the long route of asking their suppliers to connect with its preferred sellers instead. This came after the new e-commerce regulations put in place by the government, late last year. The law now bars online retailers from clinching exclusive deals with product sellers thereby affecting market dynamics. The rules also said that online marketplaces cannot control or possess their own inventories. Sellers who source more than 25% of goods from affiliates, will be considered as ‘owned’ by Flipkart. At arm’s length In response, the Walmart-owned company is changing its role in sourcing. It will now act as a platform for its suppliers where they can directly choose their best sellers. Flipkart had earlier developed two intermediary platforms codenamed ‘Alpha’ sellers and ‘Beta’ sellers for wholesale purposes. Yet, this is not a long-term solution, not after the regulations. And, the e-commerce giant is taking the first step of exiting wholesale business all-together. Flipkart is looking to exit wholesale business to toe the government's line, says report

The contribution of WS Retail to merchandise sales on the marketplace has declined to less than 30% from 80% about a year ago. 
 
With the share of WS Retail's sales going down, Flipkart is trying to add more of its third-party sellers by the year end, a person familiar with the plans told to the Economic Times. 
 Flipkart co-founders <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> had set up WS Retail in 2010 and they did it because India doesn't allow foreign-backed e-Commerce companies to sell directly to consumers. The regulators were not happy with the rules, so the founders sold their WS Retail stake in September 2012. 
 "We have ramped up our sellers and in many categories they (non-WS Retail sellers) have become the largest," said Ankit Nagori, <keyword id="170661" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-Vice-President">senior Vice-President</keyword> at Flipkart, adding he does not want to disclose the shares, including WS Retail. 
 
Currently, the e-Commerce company has over 30,000 sellers and wants to increase that number to 100,000 by the end of 2015. 
 
Moreover, the marketplace's gross merchandise volume run rate — expected annual sales based on current sales — is over $4 billion (Rs 25,540 crore). It is targeting to double that by the year end. 
 
Flipkart is cutting down its dependence on WS Retail, except for the electronics category as most of the exclusive launches of phones are done with its help, the person familiar with the company's plans told the financial daily. 
 
As far as Flipkart is concerned, it has also become vital to come across as a neutral marketplace so new sellers are comfortable. "It is harder to convince sellers that Flipkart is an equal marketplace if WS Retail is the biggest seller on the platform," said a second person familiar with the company's thinking.

 Flipkart co-founders <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> had set up WS Retail in 2010 and they did it because India doesn't allow foreign-backed <keyword id="1105147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="E-commerce-companies">e-Commerce companies</keyword> to sell directly to consumers. The regulators were not happy with the rules, so the founders sold their WS Retail stake in September 2012. 

	"We have ramped up our sellers and in many categories they (non-WS Retail sellers) have become the largest," said Ankit Nagori, senior Vice-President at Flipkart, adding he does not want to disclose the shares, including WS Retail.
 

	Currently, the e-Commerce company has over 30,000 sellers and wants to increase that number to 100,000 by the end of 2015.
 

	Moreover, the marketplace's gross merchandise volume run rate — expected annual sales based on current sales — is over $4 billion (Rs 25,540 crore). It is targeting to double that by the year end.
 Flipkart is cutting down its dependence on WS Retail, except for the <keyword id="2847653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electronics-category">electronics category</keyword> as most of the exclusive launches of phones are done with its help, the person familiar with the company's plans told the financial daily. 

	As far as Flipkart is concerned, it has also become vital to come across as a neutral marketplace so new sellers are comfortable. "It is harder to convince sellers that Flipkart is an equal marketplace if WS Retail is the biggest seller on the platform," said a second person familiar with the company's thinking.
