Newly appointed Chief Product Officer of <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, <keyword id="278552" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Punit-Soni">Punit Soni</keyword>, is on a mission. He wants India’s largest e-Commerce player to become global tech powerhouse and also a company to have the best talent from across the globe in coming years. 
 
Soni, who launched various products for Google during his eight-year stint and helped Motorola Mobility turnaround, is back in India after spending his entire professional career in the US and is on the job. 
 
While talking to Times of India, Soni said he is coming to the future with a focus on enhancing Flipkart’s mobile Commerce experience, adding consumers should expect changes on mobile front soon. 
 For this, he is scanning the world for talent. 
 
"We are focusing on getting amazing talent which is global in nature. Now we are at an inflection point and the world is looking at India as the big opportunity. Just like younger start-ups look up to Flipkart as a role model, now I want Flipkart to do the next thing — bring large number of people from across the globe to work here and live happily, both professionally and personally. This should then seep into the rest of the ecosystem. I think it will happen, it's just about us evolving ourselves into a more thoughtful international employer than an Indian employer," Soni told TOI. 
 
Soni along with another Google veteran Peeyush Ranjan would tap into talent from Silicon Valley’s tech giants like Google. 
 
Flipkart is now focussing on mobile, as outlined by co-owner Sachin Bansal, and seeks to downsize its legacy as a desktop-driven player. 
 
"The conversation is what truly a true mobile commerce experience is— no one has really cracked it yet," Soni said. "Today any mobile app is basically a website condensed into a small little phone with some ability to tap and swipe. Now compare that to the idea of shopping. I'm trying to build what is a true mobile commerce experience. If I can build that up in any geography, it is here in India," he told the news daily. 
 
The e-Commerce company also sees mobile start-ups as a huge challenge. 
 
“We are watchful of these younger start-ups. It is a challenge. I understand that disruption most likely comes from a smaller start-up. Their ability to do things is phenomenal and that is what makes them the prime disruptor of large companies,” Soni added. 
 
Flipkart and fashion online retailer Myntra, which it acquired last year, have been pushing their mobile applications as smartphone penetration in India skyrockets. TOI reported that Myntra planned to its website with Flipkart following the same as the online retailers morph into pure-play mobile outfits.

Technology is emerging as the biggest battlefront for Indian eCommerce and software firms. With leading companies as Infosys and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> hiring engineers groomed in toptier US companies to acquire the domain edge they need to dominate rivals, the need for efficient employee seems to have peaked up. No wonder they are poaching talent from the competition—even from <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>. A news report by the Economic Times has confirmed thatBengaluru-based eCommerce giant Flipkart is hiring another top engineer from Google, highlighting a trend among the country's fast-growing companies to tap into <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> for talent to bolster their technology fronts. 
 Sources have informed the financial daily that Peeyush Ranjan, a senior engineering director at Google, will join Flipkart's commerce division led by <keyword id="705865" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mukesh-Bansal">Mukesh Bansal</keyword> in a key role. 
 This is nothing new, since the company had hired another Google <keyword id="2796851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="engineering-leader">engineering leader</keyword>, <keyword id="278552" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Punit-Soni">Punit Soni</keyword> as a <keyword id="2796852" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="chief-product-officer-in-the-same-division">chief product officer in the same division</keyword> last month. Soni will join Flipkart this month and Ranjan likely in May. As per the news report, Mukesh along with Flipkart co-founder <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> had met around three-dozen potential hires in the Valley last month.

Flipkart goes shopping in Google!

It seems <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/LeEcos-Big-Five-offers-for-Flipkarts-Big-Shopping-Days-Earphones-Cashback-Exchange-Offer-Supertainment-and-much-more-await-/articleshow/52422055.cms">Flipkart’s</a> organisation redesign decision is costing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/5-things-that-went-wrong-with-Flipkart-and-Snapdeal/articleshow/52122723.cms">India’s largest e-commerce company </a>heavily. This is because as a part of the ongoing process, it has also completely restructured its campus hiring process and thereby, deferred the joining dates of the fresh IIM batch it recruited recently by 6 months. 
 
The decision has not gone down too well with IIM-Ahmedabad leading to the two locking horns over the issue. 
 
In a recent mail from the office of IIM-Ahmedabad’s chairperson to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tiger-global-reduced-Amazon-stake/articleshow/52308087.cms">Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal </a>and human resources head Nitin Sethi , the institute has used rather tough words to express their displeasure <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s decision. The mail reads: 
 
“Our students hired by Flipkart rejected multiple opportunities that the campus had to offer and chose Flipkart over other well-reputed recruiters because of the strength of its brand.” 
 
"The decision to defer the date of joining, coming as it does so close to the earlier promised date of June 2016, is sure to make this talent pool regret their decision of joining your company. Talented students fresh out of campus, on the eve of starting successful careers, now feel cheated. While we understand that restructuring calls for tough decisions in an organization, the matter of campus hiring could have been handled much better, with campuses forewarned well in advance and engaged as partners in this decision-making.” 
 
“The compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh being offered is utterly unacceptable. Compensation should be in the form of a monthly payment starting June and not as a lump sum as joining bonus or arrears.” 
 
The delay in the joining dates should be shortened, the letter says, and the company must give a written commitment that candidates will have a job when the joining date is finalized. 
 
“Rude shocks due to unilateral decision-making does little to help strengthen relationships with the campus. Future engagement of Flipkart with B-school campuses is bound to get affected as a relationship based on mistrust and lack of transparency can never be mutually beneficial," the letter further reads. 
 
Meanwhile, Flipkart’s recent announcement, that led to this entire explosion, read: “We have re-designed our campus program in order to align that with our new business focus and provide meaningful opportunities to our campus hires. As part of this re-design, we are looking at a decentralized program that takes into account specific business needs as per the business unit. As part of the redesign process, we will be postponing the joining of the new recruits by a few months. This postponement was necessitated by the fact that Flipkart is undergoing an organization redesign that involves creation of new units in some cases and integration of a few units. Instead of June 2016, the new recruits will now be part of the improved campus program in December 2016. Flipkart will also be paying an additional joining bonus of Rs.1.5 lakh to all campus recruits.” 
 
The explosive mail that the company has now received has also been marked to several other IIMs. 
 
“Yes, we have been copied. As far as a decision is concerned, we are still talking to students as to what they would want to do in this situation. If they want to look for alternatives or stick to the offer. It’s only after we are done talking to the students that we shall take a collective decision in this matter,” said Sapna Agarwal, Head CDS at IIM Bangalore. 
 
Meanwhile, Flipkart reportedly has responded to the institute confirming it will absorb all the students it has hired by December. However, the company has refused to increase the compensation as demanded by the college.

E-commerce major Flipkart is looking to hire 20-30 per cent more people in 2017 compared to last year even as rival Snapdeal hands out pink slips to its employees, according to the PTI. 
 
The Bengaluru-based firm, which is locked in an intense battle with the US-based Amazon for leadership in the Indian market, will hire most laterals this year. 
 
"Our 2017 hiring plans are calibrated to the growth momentum we are seeing and we expect it to be somewhere around 20% to 30% higher than last year, spread out as per requirements across verticals," Flipkart COO Nitin Seth told PTI. 
 
He added that a majority of this will likely come in through the lateral route. 
 
"We believe this offers us the right mix of talent needed to power the next phase of growth at Flipkart," he said. 
 
Seth, however, declined to comment on the hiring number this year or in the previous year. 
 
According to sources, Flipkart hired about 1,500 people last year. 
 
Besides, it hired about 10,000 temporary staffers, mostly in logistics, ahead of festive sales to ensure it can methe huge jump in demand. 
 
According to research firm RedSeer, the Indian e-tailing industry expanded by a merely 12 per cent in 2016 to clock revenues of USD 14.5 billion compared to a whopping 180 per cent growth in 2015. 
 
With raising of fresh funds becoming difficult and markdown in valuations, many of these technology-led businesses are being forced to pare down workforce or shut businesses. 
 
Flipkart itself has seen a mutual fund managed by Morgan Stanley marking down its value for the fifth straight quarter. It now values the e-commerce major at USD 5.37 billion. 
 
Last month, SoftBank-backed Snapdeal laid off some 600 people, with founders forgoing their salaries as part of the company's efforts to become profitable in two years. 
 
Similarly, the Chennai-based online hotel room aggregator Stayzilla decided to wrap up operations because of intense competition in the market.

Flipkart is on a hiring spree

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIM-A&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad</a> (IIM-A) just backed its students and wrote a strongly worded letter to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">online marketplace Flipkart</a> over late joining of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=recruitment&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">recruits</a>. 
 After <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> deferred the joining dates of new recruits from June to December over restructuring, IIM-A stated that the e-commerce player should guarantee that students have a job whenever the date is finalised. 
 
IIM-A wrote to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=binny+bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart’s Binny Bansal</a>, Chief People Officer Nitin Seth and Executive Chairman Sachin Bansal, saying that students need to repay loans and turned down multiple opportunities that the campus had to offer for Flipkart. 
 
It also said that Flipkart’s compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh for late joining was not acceptable at all and it should be in the form of a monthly payment starting June. 
 
However, Flipkart has declined increasing the compensation. 
 
Flipkart told ET that it has written to IIM-Ahmedabad placement committee Chairperson Asha Kaul saying that it's taking on all the students it has hired but it wouldn't be able to increase the compensation.

The IIM-A in its letter stated that this will affect Flipkart’s engagement with B-school campuses as relationships are based on trust and transparency. 
 
Flipkart is already under pressure as it is trying to lower its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=burn+rate&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">burn rate</a>, trim fixed costs, and is now eyeing profitability only. 
The company has already put high-profile hires on the backburner and is not aggressively looking to add more executives to its ranks, relying more on existing staff to fill senior roles. 
 "We have hired a lot in the last 18 months. There are a few critical positions opened on the hiring side based on specific needs we have which we continue to do. What we have is great internal talent," <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> told ET.

They are primarily looking for technology professionals like data scientists, UI &amp; UX designers, product solution engineers, tech program managers, software developers, IT infrastructure &amp; service delivery and IT applications. Of these, 50 positions have been reserved for data sciences. A Flipkart spokesperson told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/flipkart-unfreezes-hiring-700-new-jobs-up-for-grabs/articleshow/63423391.cms">Economic Times</a> that the “aggressive tech hiring is part of the company’s ‘AI for India’ programme, which leverages Flipkart’s strengths in tech and data to build scalable AI-powered solutions for the country”. After finding itself in financial dire straits, Flipkart slashed it’s manpower from 15,000 to 8,000 in 2015. They also delayed the joining dates for campus recruits from the IIMs in early 2016. However, in November 2017, Flipkart, along with other e-commerce giants like <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> landed in IIT Delhi for campus recruitment. Its highest bid was a whopping Rs 26 lakh annual CTC, an offer second only to that of Uber whose highest offer was an annual CTC of Rs 36.6 lakh. Flipkart also hired around 20 freshers from the two campuses of the Indian School of Business (ISB). However, students were wary of joining the company, mainly due to the aforementioned delay in joining dates. The homegrown e-retailer has experienced a lot of bumps in the past few years. And despite receiving $6.1 billion from various investors last year, as reported by the <a href="https://www.thequint.com/news/india/flipkart-losses-wiped-out-half-of-six-billion-injected-by-investors">Quint</a>, Flipkart has endured a loss of Rs 24,000 crore ($3.6 billion) as of March 2017. That is more than half of what it raised. And while it is at the verge of striking a massive deal with <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/walmart-set-to-be-largest-shareholder-in-flipkart/articleshow/63292655.cms">Walmart Inc</a> that could potentially make the Bentonville-based retail giant Flipkart’s largest shareholder, it is yet to be seen if Flipkart and <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> together will be able to take on their biggest competitor - Amazon.

After a two-year freeze, Flipkart is set to hire close to 700 employees this year

Chief Product Officer Punit Soni said Flipkart is focusing on delivering such an experience and for this the company will align its infrastructure and engineering resources. 
 
If Flipkart is able to do it, this will mark a change from its present mobile app and tech infrastructure, which is largely for desktop applications. 
 
"We haven't really figured out what mobile commerce really is. In real life, shopping is a very different experience," Soni told Economic Times in an interview. 
 
In an effort to give razor sharp competition to its rivals, like Amazon, Flipkart will have to be completely overhauled. 
 
"To do that, you have to reinvent your infrastructure so that it is truly mobile-oriented," said Soni. 
 
He is already planning to hire talent from across the globe for this. 
 
"If Flipkart has to be a global company, we should be able to hire the best people across the world," he said, hinting that Flipkart will hire more people from the Bay Area, where the density of such talent is higher. 
 
"Our ability to succeed in the next three to four years will depend on solving these problems," Soni told ET. 
 
One of the challenges for Soni would be to build this experience without hurting the eCommerce’s existing business. 
 
"If you come from a world of desktops, how do you reinvent your infrastructure without destroying what you already have," he said.

Flipkart’s mobile App to be a game-changer in e-commerce. Know how

KOLKATA/MUMBAI: Where is the country’s top engineering talent heading to in a year of subdued hiring? <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL), <keyword id="43340" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Oracle">Oracle</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> topped the hiring charts for the class of 2014, according to data from the top <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> at the end of the first phase of this placement season. 
 With 271 offers, almost a 100 more than the second-largest <keyword id="41007" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="recruiter">recruiter</keyword>, Samsung is the clear winner so far. This number includes 69 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 28 postings in <keyword id="43918" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Korea">Korea</keyword>. 
 
The South Korean conglomerate has ramped up hiring numbers by as much as 71% from 158 last year, emerging as the biggest recruiter at the IITs so far. It had made 23 international offers last year. 
 
“We focused on campus hiring for multiple reasons — strengthening our core competency in embedded computing and building new skills/capabilities in UX design, enterprise software and data analysis,” said a Samsung spokesperson in a written response to ET. Out of 243 candidates selected for India, 211 are <keyword id="821920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="from-software">from software</keyword> engineering and 19 from UX design. 
 RIL, another regular recruiter, made 177 offers, lower than last year’s 202. Students have been taken on in the roles of graduate <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> trainees (GETs). 
 
“Other than some 45 PPOs, RIL has hired 132 students from 8 IITs – Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras, Kanpur and IITBHU. In addition to this, Reliance Jio hired 5 GETs, one from IIT-Hyderabad and 4 from IIT-Indore,” said a Reliance Industries spokesperson in a written response. 
 
These numbers reflect hiring at the end of the first phase of the placement season in which roughly 50-60% of the batches have been placed across IITs. The second phase will start in the first week of January and will cover the remaining students. 
 
Tech major Oracle was another big recruiter, taking on close to 135 students across almost all IITs. While its overall campus hiring numbers remained fairly consistent over the last three years, it made a few US-based offers for the first time this year. 
 
“Oracle has a number of different business groups internally and we hire students across a variety of positions. 
 Many students will join Oracle, working in product development roles across our hardware, software or industry-specific based groups,” said a <keyword id="154054" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="company-spokesperson">company spokesperson</keyword>. 
 E-commerce major Flipkart, as reported earlier by ET, has been a big draw at the IITs during the first phase of placements. The company increased hiring from around 100 last year to 118. “Campus hiring is strategic for us. It helps us identify and bring new talent,” <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, co-founder, Flipkart, told ET. 
 
“Past experience has shown us that talent from tier-I colleges like the IITs and IIMs and the way they meet the challenges posed by a high-growth environment like ours has been remarkable -- and a great fit for an organisation like Flipkart that stresses on ownership and innovation,” added Bansal. 
 
Several other companies emerged as strong recruiters, according to hiring data from six of the older IITs at Bombay, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Kanpur and Guwahati. 
 Business process outsourcing company <keyword id="369930" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="EXL-Service">EXL Service</keyword>, for instance, made 97 offers across 7 IITs this year compared to just 46 across 5 IITs last placements. The increase in the number of campus hires in the roles of consultants and analysts is to power the company’s analytics business, which has been growing at more than 30% for the last few years.
