The latest platform will enable Indians to start their own businesses without any additional investors, the Walmart-owned company said. “With the ability to influence their local network and fulfill their aspirations, users of Shopsy will be able to share catalogues of a wide selection of 15 crore products offered by Flipkart sellers,” the company said in a statement. The catalogue will include products across fashion, beauty, mobiles, electronics and home among others. Users can register on the Shopsy app using their phone numbers and start earning by sharing their handpicked catalogue with their network. The user will earn commissions on every order they place on the customer’s behalf. The commission percentage will vary depending on the category of products being ordered. This is not the first time Flipkart has experimented with its social commerce play. Last July, the company had started experimenting with video commerce as well, with its refurbished goods platform 2Gud. 2GudSocial (social.2Gud.com), which is no longer accessible, was live for mobile phones around the same time last year. It allowed content creators to make short videos to sell certain products ranging from fashion, retail, mobile, electronics and accessories. The launch of Shopsy has put Flipkart’s platform in a full circle, which not only allows sellers to sell online, but allows customers to promote their favourite product and earn through it. This is also the biggest entry into the <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> social commerce segment, which is currently led by six-year-old Meesho. Other big players in the market were founded only two-three years ago. Their efforts seem to have paid off with the India government <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/govt-does-u-turn-in-policy-says-e-commerce-firms-can-sell-private-labels-119010301114_1.html">flip-flopping</a> to say that the brands can still sell products by associated private labels. This means that products like the Amazon Echo and the Kindle as well as Flipkart items from MarQ, SmartBuy and Perfect Homes will still be available online. Both e-commerce giants had plans to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/flipkart-lines-up-private-labels-before-big-day/articleshow/65715180.cms">increase focus</a> on their private labels, which offer higher margins and contribute towards the company's’ gross sales. Consumers also reportedly prefer the private labels since the products are 20-30% cheaper than other branded products according to Adarsh Menon, the head of private labels at Flipkart. Amazon, following Flipkart’s playbook, also <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/K6AOABYmYOWnrmr03KQBZJ/Amazon-India-looks-to-expand-private-label-biz.html">has plans</a> of scaling up its operations to include private labels that cover new categories. Between 2017 and 2018, it <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/O8Wc537U13T2iREYW1jYfM/Amazon-trebles-choice-of-offerings-under-private-labels.html">more than doubled</a> the number of products under its private labels from 15,000 to 43,000. The Indian government taking back its own words The original policy stated that e-commerce marketplace entities could not sell products by private labels where it could control the inventory or where it had a stake in it the associated company. ‘Clarifying’ the implication of that, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) issued another statement on Thursday.

The domestic trade body, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), is particularly ashen. The Flipkart Controversy has left many distressed about the ethics of e-tailers in India. There has been widespread speculation and fear among consumers that if India’s largest online e-commerce website is caught faking discounts, many others are going unnoticed. 
 
It’s too early to conclude whether this will lead to long term doubts over discounts e-tailers offer. However, a group of industry experts believe the Flipkart case is an error, like many others that occur worldwide. They say it’s not peculiar to India, or e-commerce. 
 
Most laymen want to know if there is any regulatory authority to check on e-commerce prices in real time. There isn’t any. Most websites conduct sample tests, but industry experts believe it’s impossible to monitor the millions of products sold online. Does it leave room for error or forgery? Possibly. 
 
What does one do if he/she feels cheated? Is there any ‘special’ provision for online retail forgery? 
 
“Cases can be taken up in the Consumer Forum by the concerned consumers. If there is a misrepresentation, there are provisions in the legal system to file a case against alleged misrepresentation", Manish Gaurav, Associate Partner, Bhir Associates says. 
 
Many agitated souls believe the online marketplace model itself is disempowering on the part of consumers. Legal experts beg to differ. They say it’s a double edged sword as the seller and buyer can’t often get in touch directly. 
 
Any legal advice to the websites offering outrageous discounts? 
 
“Most websites are online marketplaces. Websites should be cautious about parallel importers who may not have the requisite permission from the concerned manufacturer or dealer to sell such imported goods in India. Also, Terms and Conditions should be clear enough to consumers and not tucked away neatly in corners in small font”, Gaurav says. 
 
Flipkart was unavailable for comment. 
 
The advice to shoppers willing to buy online: it’s better to be safe than sorry in the next round of flash sales.

FlipkartPrices: They quote, or misquote, that’s the question

<keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> shopping experience is going to get better with Flipkart’s new focus area. Flipkart is working to gain mastery over <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword>, cofounder and CEO <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> told ET, describing the technology as a key differentiator in the fiercely competitive business of online retail. 

	Bansal's comments, are of a piece with Flipkart's efforts to expand capability in technology areas such as data analytics and mobility.
 

	"The big disruption that is happening across the world is the rise of artificial intelligence," the 34-year-old said on Friday at an event organised by The Indus Entrepreneurs in Bengaluru.
 "At Flipkart that is a huge focus for us." Earlier this year, Flipkart hired former <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> executive <keyword id="278552" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Punit-Soni">Punit Soni</keyword> as its chief product officer and appointed <keyword id="3013495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Peyush-Ranjan">Peyush Ranjan</keyword>, also a Google veteran, as its head of engineering. Bansal's comments throw light on the work that the technology teams have been tasked with, and point to the potential advancements at online retailers. 

	"The number of shopping experiences will become more and more human, rather than talking to a machine that's pretty dumb," said Bansal, who studied at IIT Delhi and worked at Amazon before launching Flipkart with batchmate Binny Bansal in 2007.
 

	"This is still work in progress but it will become one of the big reasons for consumers to choose one way or another."
