These participants were not professional writers, and their innate creative potential was measured using a standard psychological test that required them to list 10 drastically different words. The volunteers were then randomly divided into three groups, each tasked with writing an eight-sentence story on one of three themes: an ocean adventure, a jungle expedition or a journey to another planet. Participants were also assigned to one of three groups with varying levels of AI assistance. The first group received no help, the second was given a three-sentence story prompt from ChatGPT, and the third group could access up to five AI-generated story ideas to inspire their writing. After completing their stories, participants evaluated their own creativity based on novelty, enjoyment and the potential of the idea to be developed into a published book. Additionally, 600 external reviewers assessed the stories using the same criteria, providing an objective evaluation of the creative works. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Good for one, bad for all" comment="subhead" text="Good for one, bad for all">Good for one, bad for all</cmsannotation> After analysing the findings, the researchers discovered that on average, AI could enhance an individual writer's creativity by up to 10% and the story's enjoyability by 22%. These benefits were most pronounced for writers initially deemed the least creative, suggesting that AI helps level the playing field by boosting their creative output. But on a collective level, AI-assisted stories tended to resemble each other more closely than those created without AI. This was largely down to writers ‘anchoring’ their narratives too heavily to the AI-suggested ideas. In essence, these findings indicate that while AI may help improve individual creativity, its use risks diminishing collective novelty. According to study authors, this creates a social dilemma: <keyword id="22428188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-use" source="keywords">AI use</keyword> breaks down entry barriers and allows more people to participate, which is a huge positive. But on the flip side, it decreases the collective novelty of art, narrowing the scope of diverse creative content being produced—a big no-no. This also means that early adoption of as well as over-reliance on AI tools could hinder the development of fundamental skills in writing, music and other creative fields, similar to how early use of calculators might impede learning basic arithmetic. Marco Argenti joined Oct. 21 and hasn't wasted any time bringing over one of his ex-employer's most storied quirks. Earlier this week, Argenti, Goldman's new co-chief information officer, sent an 800-word memo to the more than 9,000 engineers at the Wall Street bank. Titled "Narrative Memos," it went into detail about how Argenti prefers written memos over PowerPoint presentations. The memo is one of the first tangible signs of how Argenti and new Chief Technology Officer Atte Lahtiranta, who worked together at Nokia and consider themselves friends, plan to shake up Goldman's engineering division and model its culture more along the lines of Big Tech. Argenti shares the CIO role with George Lee, a longtime Goldman banker to Silicon Valley firms. The memo was sent as a follow up to an engineering division Town Hall held this week, where outgoing CIO Elisha Wiesel sang self-written songs and played guitar, according to the memo viewed by Business Insider. The idea of writing narrative memos isn't a new one. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos famously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/jeff-bezos-email-against-powerpoint-presentations-2015-7">banned PowerPoint</a> in 2004 and asked for memos instead. The idea, as Bezos explained it at the time, was that crafting a well-written memo requires a clarity of thought that presentations don't. And it's that thought process that's so important for proper decision-making.Argenti, who was initially skeptical of the idea when he first encountered it Amazon, where he worked for six years, said in the memo that he quickly became a convert. "The power of the narrative doc is that it takes charisma and presentation flair out of the equation when making decisions," he wrote this week. "It forces the author to think through all facets of a problem and explain them clearly to a group of smart and naturally curious stakeholders, and gives you the opportunity to tell your story without being interrupted."Meetings structured around a narrative memo include time for reading it at the meeting's start. It's a way to give every participant the same set of facts before beginning the discussion.One benefit is questions can be answered early, avoiding the problem of people interrupting presentations to ask questions that would be answered later in the deck, Argenti wrote. The Goldman exec said in the memo that he will soon publish some guidelines and samples. For now, he shared a few suggestions.First, start with the customer in mind and then work backwards. In doing that, the memo writer must consider five questions: who is the customer, what's the customer's problem or opportunity, what's the most important customer benefit, how do you know what customers want, and what does the customer experience look like. Second, in writing the memo, it's important to be as "crisp and precise" as possible, and use simple, concrete language instead of hazy constructions, he wrote. Third and last, the writer should be "objective, factual and humble," he wrote. "Do not be afraid to talk about your failures in addition to your successes. Ask yourself the hardest questions, and answer them objectively without bias."Argenti said his intention was not to "force the adoption" of memos over presentations. That's different than Bezos' mandated switch. <h2>Thinking more like Big Tech </h2>While both Argenti and Lahtiranta speak in respectful terms about Goldman's 150-year history, they have joined the bank with a mandate to change the engineering division into something that looks more like the Big Tech firms where the two executives spent their early careers.That may mean looking for ways of making life easier for Goldman engineers, such as getting away from an email-based culture or spurring small changes to improve engineers' ability to be creative.Argenti, for example, asked employees interested in learning more to reach him via email but also Symphony, Goldman's internal chat function. Here are my takeaways.<h2 id="3cacb537-6e96-4788-9105-56bfe82d14f4">The voices are realistic and entertaining</h2>After recently trying out <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-chatgpt-advanced-voice-mode-heres-what-to-expect-2024-9">ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode</a>, I thought I had heard the best of what AI has to offer consumers in terms of voice interaction.To my surprise, this NotebookLM-generated podcast exceeded anything I'd heard so far in terms of AI voice quality. Not only do the voices sound real, but the way the AI hosts bounce off each other and banter mimics the style and structure of a real podcast.For example, when the hosts were talking about OpenAI cofounder <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ilya-sutskever-leaving-openai-6-months-after-failed-altman-ouster-2024-5#:~:text=OpenAI%20cofounder%20Ilya%20Sutskever%20is,the%20failed%20Sam%20Altman%20ouster&amp;text=OpenAI%20cofounder%20Ilya%20Sutskever%20is%20leaving%20the%20company%2C%20he%20said,Altman%20last%20year%2C%20reports%20said.">Ilya Sutskever's journey at the company</a> (he resigned months after Sam Altman's return as CEO), one of the hosts said, "This is juicy stuff, tell me more." It strayed from the stiff and robotic voice I expect to hear from AI-generated content and provided the entertaining flair I enjoy from podcasts.The hosts also raised legitimate questions on the topic at hand and exchanged thoughtful responses to information. It's like hearing a lifelike conversation with two knowledgeable podcasters — and the ability to personalize it to your interests is a game changer.<h2 id="65246980-21fe-4391-b961-34cfab17327a">The quality of the information is solid</h2>Each of the podcasts I generated gave an accurate overview of the information I fed it, and I didn't catch any inaccuracies.Like any AI tool though, Audio Overviews isn't perfect. Google notes at the bottom of the screen that "NotebookLM may still sometimes give inaccurate responses, so you may want to confirm any facts independently."With that in mind, I probably wouldn't use it alone to educate me on a topic I'm not at all familiar with, and it's a good idea to do your own research — especially if anything is said that seems off or inaccurate.As an avid podcast listener though, I was pleasantly surprised by the tool. <a target="_blank" class="" href=" https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-dump-announcements-feels-never-ending-gartner-analyst-2024-5">With so many AI developments coming out</a>, it's rare that I'm left awestruck by a tool that's actually available to play around with, today.Audio Overviews is probably my favorite AI tool I've tried out so far — and it showcases the innovative ways AI can be used in our daily lives.

Martin writes that Saera was "a trial from the very start." The wealthy's new favorite sport is coming for pickleball's crown

The other day, a friend of mine liked one of my LinkedIn posts. I was mortified. I quickly sent him a text explaining that posting there was a function of my job, not for funsies. While my frantic embarrassment was perhaps a tad of an overcorrection (OK, a lot of an overcorrection), I nonetheless feel deeply self-conscious about what I post on the work-focused website. I don't want to come off as overly earnest, too self-promotional, or dare I say it, cringe.That LinkedIn is a cringey space is well established. The issue has been dissected on Reddit, in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-cringe-more-attractive-advertisers-than-elon-musk-x-2024-1">media</a>, and even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/making-linkedin-less-cringe-guide-authentic-daniel-buchanan/">by LinkedIn itself</a>. LinkedIn is just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-linkedin-got-weird-work-life-blurred-lines-of-oversharing-2023-9">a weird place to be</a> in the first place. It's a jobs board with a social network layered on top of it. It's an artificial space where everyone is trying to put on their best face, but one that leaves people feeling quite exposed.Why does LinkedIn feel so cringe? And is it possible to post there without being cringe yourself? I decided to reach out to some experts to try to find out, which was an embarrassing endeavor on its own.<h2>Why LinkedIn feels so cringe</h2>As much as LinkedIn is a professional platform, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-is-a-dating-app-remote-work-online-romance-2024-1">something about it feels really personal</a>. Even when you're posting with your real name, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-dead-instagram-tiktok-bereal-replaced-group-chats-messaging-2023-8">other social-media sites</a> like Instagram, Twitter/X, or TikTok have an air of anonymity to them, a sense of removal. A tweet is more fleeting, and Instagram is more private, even if your profile is public. On a lot of these platforms, everyone's sort of doing a bit. On LinkedIn, you wind up putting a lot of yourself out there: your picture, your work history, your education, your professional past, your aspirations. You're there for a specific reason — to advance your career and network. You have a specific audience in mind — prospective employers,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-linkedin-leveraging-creator-market-drive-business-growth-2024-1"> potential business leads</a>. That all requires you to be your best, most workiest self."The way people position themselves and kind of discuss really anything is filtered through that lens of etiquette and knowing that all eyes are on you all the time," Nathan Allebach, a social-media strategist and creative director, said. "It's just almost like an omni-surveillance state."On LinkedIn, people face a case of "context collapse," where they communicate with disparate groups of people all at once. In most places, you know exactly who you're talking to — friends in a group chat or your work colleagues on email — but LinkedIn folds all of them together. That leads to a self-presentation conundrum: Which you do you want to be?"It's hard to think about how to post, what to post, when you have, for example, your bosses there, your former bosses there, maybe your high-school friends are there, with your current colleagues or interns," Sunny Xun Liu, the director of research at the Stanford Social Media Lab, said. "We usually behave differently based on who we talk to. When all those people are there, it's very challenging to find a way that we feel comfortable."LinkedIn users are trapped in a culture of professionalism and all that comes with it. The person you are with your boss or a client is probably not your truest self. This setting makes posting — or even just creating and maintaining a profile — feel extra high-stakes and, in turn, contrived. On LinkedIn, there is no dancing like no one's watching.This high-wire performance has helped foster LinkedIn's reputation as a space for content that's a little extra, grimace-inducing, and often insincere. It's known for guys spouting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/why-are-these-posts-taking-over-your-linkedin-feed-because">broetry</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crying-ceo-posts-tearful-selfie-linkedin-following-layoffs-criticsm-2022-8">CEOs crying</a> and wannabe thinkfluencers posing as experts in areas nobody needs their expertise in. There's a reason social-media accounts like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/bestoflinkedin/">Best of LinkedIn</a>, which pokes fun at over-the-top LinkedIn posts, exist. Even the people who run LinkedIn know that when something goes viral there, it's often not a good sign.LinkedIn has made some efforts to change things — it's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedins-new-2023-algorithm-update-maximize-your-reach-hajighasem-k0fkc/">adjusted its algorithm</a> to try to elevate more quality content and show people stuff from their networks. And while there are fewer "pure meaningless platitudes" on the platform, as Brendan Gahan, the cofounder of Creator Authority, a LinkedIn influencer marketing agency told me, there's still a "hangover" from how LinkedIn is perceived.LinkedIn might not be as cringe as it used to be, but it's still awkward. Posting and interacting there, for most people, entails a level of forced positivity and performative professionalism that isn't really matched anywhere else online."LinkedIn is an echo chamber," John Hickey, the creator of Best of LinkedIn and a freelance creative director, said. "Everyone's on their best behavior, but in some ways that best behavior is also their worst behavior because they're not being their true selves."<h2>How to be less cringe on LinkedIn</h2>OK, so if LinkedIn comes with a bit of cringe baked in, what's the best way to minimize that impulse as much as possible? LinkedIn declined to comment for this story, but it sent over a couple of links, one to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-were-surfacing-knowledge-linkedin-alice-xiong/">blog post</a> about how its users want "knowledge-based content" and another to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/linkedin-guide-to-creating/">guide</a> on becoming a LinkedIn creator that includes a fair amount of content but is a little hard to wade through. I am not among the 3,224 people apparently interested in an hourlong webinar on "nailing your niche," nor do I really want to see people share their posts and ask others why they think they underperformed. The goal for most people on LinkedIn is not to be a creator, anyway, it's just to live to fight another day in the working world. Given the weakness of the official advice, I decided to ask a bunch of people for tips on how to post in a non-cringe way on LinkedIn.Brandon Smithwick, a LinkedIn creator and the head of content at Kickstarter, said it's generally a good idea to keep it short. "A post that's a huge dissertation or paragraphs, I'm scrolling past it, I'm going to bounce, I'm not reading that," he said. Memes do well, but it's also fine to just engage casually — share a blog post you like, comment on other people's posts, or just keep up a decent-looking profile. He schedules his posts and suggests others do the same, especially if it feels daunting to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn and come up with ideas. It may also be helpful for people who dread hitting the "post" button and seeing a message immediately go up.Natalie Marshall, who goes by Corporate Natalie on social media, told me that since posting anywhere is by its nature cringey, the best approach is just to try to make content that isn't too forced. She tries to add some personal narrative or anecdotes to her posts and will ask followers about their experiences and feedback, but she's cognizant of length. "We're not storytellers here," she told me. She feels like she can "hide behind the written word" on LinkedIn more than on platforms where she's posting videos. It's a tough balancing act — she suggests people use a personal flair on the platform, but at one point in our conversation, she thought I accused her posts of being cringe.Also, people should remember they can opt out of posting altogether. "If you don't want to post, don't," Marshall said. "Why is there this pressure to build your personal brand and build your LinkedIn and do these things?"I also asked a pair of social-media managers — one at Business Insider and one at a different company — for their thoughts on LinkedIn posting. They offered up some tips: Try to ask a question at the end of a post, include some extra detail, maybe toss in some hashtags. Both also came to the same conclusion: There's no way to get around the cringe. "I have thought of it as part of the job, but doesn't make it any less cringe!" one told me. "I would say to embrace the cringe," the other said.None of this is to dunk on LinkedIn as a platform — I like it very much! Of all of the social-media websites, I find it the most useful for my job. I just feel like a complete idiot being there sometimes. A lot of people do. Those are just the rules of the road."Eventually, you just kind of give in," Allebach said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Tina Sendin used the AI writing tool Jasper.ai to write articles for a project on a tight deadline.</li><li>The longtime client discovered the articles were AI-generated and ended their working relationship.</li></ul>I work a full-time job in marketing and do freelance writing on the side. I was juggling a lot when a longtime client commissioned me for a three-month project. It entailed writing a series of how-to guides and 56 articles for their site.Since I couldn't clone myself, I tried what I thought would be the next best thing: I used AI.Convinced that I could use the new technology to meet extremely tight deadlines, I started using Jasper.ai to produce up to 20 pieces in a month for this client.<h2>I was using AI to clone myself as a writer</h2>I essentially used Jasper.ai as an extension of myself.I'd let Jasper write articles of up to 2,500 words. I used it more than alternatives such as ChatGPT or Bard because it has pre-built templates that function as prompts. If I needed to expand on a sentence, I'd use Jasper's "paragraph generator" or "commands" tool. If I needed to rewrite a sentence, I'd click on "content improver." These features helped me overcome writer's block and quickly build out long-form articles.Jasper did most of the work and I did minimal editing.<h2>AI lost me a longtime client</h2>After working together for months, my client started using one of the first AI-content detectors. Upon discovering the content I gave them was AI-generated, they terminated our agreement and paid me less than 40% of the original fee after I'd delivered all the articles we'd agreed on.While this was not the outcome I intended, it shifted my mindset on how to use AI to keep clients rather than lose them.I learned a valuable lesson the hard way — AI is a tool, not something that should replace you.Looking back, I know things weren't right when I was letting AI do the work and not communicating this to my client.Here's how I use AI differently now:<h3>AI is now a crucial part of my initial discussions with new clients</h3>I ask if the client's OK with me using AI-writing tools. If not, great; I won't use it. If they see the value or don't care whether I use them, then I'll use them to enhance the quality and depth of what I write.<h3>I use AI to enhance my draft</h3>Some writers use AI to write a draft, then edit it to sound more human. I use it the other way around.I draft the article first, then use an AI tool to enhance it and ensure I've maintained the client's tone of voice. I'd typically beef a draft up with some of Jasper's templates — using the paragraph generator to expand a sentence into a paragraph, or using the content improver to rewrite text based on tone of voice or type of content. Sometimes, Jasper will tell me additional things I can cover, so I'll include them and support them with expert insights and examples.<h3>I use AI to give me ideas on sources and statistics</h3>Similarly to ChatGPT, Jasper is vulnerable to making mistakes with sources and research; its developers remind users to fact-check any statistics the tool provides. I regard the information it gives as a placeholder that gives me ideas for the kinds of sources, statistics, or websites I can seek out myself. The key is always treating statistics and other hard evidence that AI produces as a suggestion.<h3>AI helps with the tone of voice and brand voice</h3>I'll use Jasper to help me rewrite or add flair to a sentence using the "tone of voice" or "brand voice" features. I could even type in "Ryan Reynolds" and Jasper will rewrite a plain paragraph to sound like the actor.<h3>AI helps with condensing large volumes of text</h3>AI helps me summarize my research findings and insights from relevant subject-matter experts. I'll upload snippets of a transcript, and the tool will return a condensed paragraph that still includes the salient points.<h2>AI has cut my writing time in half</h2>I used to take eight hours to write a 2,500-word piece, including research, writing, and editing. Now, with AI, it takes an average of four hours — even less when it's a topic I'm highly familiar with, such as marketing and freelance writing.Cutting my writing hours in half allows me to take on more assignments.The best thing about AI is that it has improved my writing. Many people have said that AI tools churn out rubbish. That can be true — but AI outputs will be average at best if they come from vague, generic prompts. Clear and more specific prompts will improve the AI's output.<h2>AI scares me, but I think there's a right way to use it</h2>When ChatGPT achieved global fame, many writers shared their anxiety about being replaced by AI. I lost a longtime client to it. But treating it more as a friend than a foe has been beneficial. A good number of articles I wrote for clients with the aid of AI have now landed on the first page of Google search results. Google doesn't penalize content written with AI; <a href="https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content" target="_blank" rel="noopener">they care about content quality, not about how it's produced</a>.AI still scares me sometimes, but early adopters of new technology have historically reaped more rewards than punishments. AI is no different — it's still in its infancy, and we're yet to see its full potential.I think about using social media for marketing in the early 2010s when Facebook ads weren't a thing — or using TikTok to grow an audience as early as 2020. I think of how, a couple of decades back, using the internet could make things easier and faster.To me, as with any technology, it's about being specific and deliberate with it. So I'll continue to go with the flow. I'll learn about AI, so I'll know how to use it to improve my workflow and optimize my everyday work.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Nimona" stars a shape-shifting protagonist as one of the film's anti-heroes. </li><li>While the film contains explicit LGBTQ+ representation, it's also intrinsically queer. </li></ul>In February 2021, "Nimona" was effectively dead in the water. The highly anticipated adaptation of ND Stevenson's webcomic turned graphic novel was shut down at the same time that the original animation studio helming it, Blue Sky, shuttered that year. At the time, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blue-sky-staffers-react-to-disney-canceling-release-of-nimona-2021-2">staffers told Insider</a> that they thought the film would never hit viewers screens. "We all believed in it," one staffer told Insider.Now, over two years later, "Nimona" is finally reaching audiences under Netflix's banner. The streaming giant <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-nimona-landed-netflix-release-after-disney-scrapped-the-movie-2022-4">announced in April 2022 that it would release the film in 2023</a>, partnering with Annapurna Pictures on production. "Nimona," now out on Netflix, is certainly a film that deserved to see the light of day — and it's thrilling that it found a home. Warning: Spoilers for "Nimona" ahead. <div type="image" title="nimona, an impish teen, makes rock hand signs, grinning widely with flame-filled irises. behind her, ballister boldheart — a brooding, dark-armored knight —&#xa0;is unamused" height="2159" width="4319" msid="101407049" hostid="261" sizebytes="225522"></div><h2>'Nimona' hits LGBTQ+ representation landmarks at its base level</h2>Within the film's first five minutes, it's clear that "Nimona" isn't going to dance around or play coy with its queer characters. The film follows Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a man whose knighting ceremony goes horrifically wrong when a weapon planted inside his sword kills the Queen, turning him into public enemy number one. Prior to the ceremony, he shares a tender, and romantic, moment with fellow knight Ambrosius Goldenloin (Eugene Lee Yang), who will be hot on his tail shortly after.But Ballister and Ambrosius' romance is only one undercurrent in the queer torrent of "Nimona." Their fraught lovers-to-enemies relationship adds some emotional heft to the film's sometimes disjointed chase. That, of course, would be Nimona herself.<h2>Nimona is a 'power fantasy,' and a queer one at that</h2>Nimona (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) isn't a girl, something that she reminds Ballister of several times after asserting herself as his sidekick. She also isn't a gorilla, a whale, a dragon, or a demonic little child, though she appears as each of those over the course of the film's one hour and 42-minute runtime. When Ballister prods her to pin down her identity, human, girl, or otherwise, her statement is definite: "I'm Nimona."Not shape-shifting, she explains to Ballister, makes her feel worse. "I wouldn't die, die," she tells him of the possibility of simply staying in one form. It's also in the dazzling way that she revels in her own nature and knows herself, and her deep, cutting desire to be known and accepted for exactly who she is. In the film's most affective moment, Ballister says, "I see you, Nimona. And you're not alone."Stevenson, Nimona's original creator, <a href="https://www.imfineimfine.com/p/hindsight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has poked fun at his past self</a> for having "no idea" that Nimona's shape-shifting could be read as a "metaphor for transness" when he was writing the original comic (in the years since, <a href="https://www.imfineimfine.com/p/nate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he has come out as trans</a>). But Nimona's refusal to be "constrained to any form," as Stevenson explained in a press day <a href="https://www.polygon.com/23759647/nimona-netflix-comic-changes-nd-stevenson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per Polygon</a>, was a "power fantasy" for him — and as a viewer, it's one that feels intrinsically queer. "Nimona" doesn't have quite the same visual flair as contemporaries like <a href="https://www.insider.com/spiderman-spider-man-into-spider-verse-animated-frame-rate-marvel-stan-lee-2019-2">Sony's paradigm-shifting "Into the Spider-Verse"</a> or <a href="https://www.insider.com/puss-in-boots-the-last-wish-panic-attack-scene-making-2023-1">DreamWorks' outrageously good "Puss in Boots: the Last Wish."</a> But its depiction of queer identity transcends Ballister and Ambrosius' kiss (still an achievement in and of itself) or superficial messaging about being yourself."Nimona" knows herself, and doesn't need others to categorize her — just for them to see her as she is.
