India also holds the dubious distinction of being the diabetes capital of the world. Around 65 million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2016 as opposed to 26 million in 1990. As many as 35% of diabetics also suffer from obesity. The number of overweight adults otherwise also surged to 21% in 2016. Adidas onboards Deepika Padukone as its global brand ambassador

New Delhi, Dec 9 () Paytm Payments Bank (PPB) on Monday said it issued 6 lakh FASTags in the month of November.
 The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had announced that toll payments on highways would be accepted through FASTags only from December 1. This was later extended to December 15.
 In a statement, PPB said it sold 6 lakh tags in the month of November, and claimed that it has equipped over 1.85 million vehicles with FASTags.
 The National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme, the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has been implemented on a pan-India basis in order to remove bottlenecks and ensure seamless movement of traffic and collection of user fee as per the notified rates, using passive radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. 
 As on December 3, 2019, a total of 82.55 lakh FASTags have been issued. 
 PPB said it has also partnered with automobile manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, Honda Cars India, Kia Motors India Pvt Ltd, MG Motor India and others to offer pre-fitted Paytm FASTags at the time of vehicle purchase itself.
 "While over 250 camps have been set up at toll plazas, another 500 have been arranged in corporate offices, residential societies and parking lots in the top 20 cities, including Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Chennai and Jaipur," it added.
 PPB is further boosting the sale of FASTags by deploying 3,500 business correspondents in all major cities and towns, it said. SR RVK

Paytm Payments Bank issued 6 lakh FASTags in Nov

New Delhi, Mar 30 () Panic among stranded truckers at various places without proper provisions could escalate the problem of drivers' shortages and cripple supply chain, transporters' body AIMTC on Monday cautioned. All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) is the apex body of transporters representing about 93 lakh truckers across the nation. "Today we are in 6th day of countrywide lockdown and the situation at the ground has not eased a bit and if the same conditions persist than the unfolding scenario could be quite scary... it has come to light that because of the total ban on movement of vehicles carrying non-essential goods and empty vehicles, the majority drivers have left for home in 'panic' as they were stranded on the highways for days bereft of food, water and safety," the AIMTC said in a statement. Thousands of vehicles are abandoned by the drivers at whatever places possible, it said. "This type of insensitivity to the ...the drivers - who are in public service, providing the essential services to the people of the country will further dishearten them and make them run to their homes. This will create scarcity of drivers for carrying the essential goods," the statement said. The body said though the government is trying its best to salvage the situation but its policies does not seem to have desired impact. It said more than 85 per cent of the Trucking population is of small operators having one to five trucks and once their wheels stop churning, there is no other source of income for them. The AIMTC said another unfolding situation is the expiry of National &amp; State Permits, Fitness, Road Tax, Token Tax, Third Party Insurance, which is getting expired for a large number of vehicles. "The information contained in yesterday's DO letter by Secretary Home, allowing movement of essential and non essential goods without discrimination, has not reached to the officials at the ground level manning the checkposts / nakas and it is leading to harassment, extortion and beatings in some cases of the drivers and crew, who are already braving extreme conditions without food, water and security," the AIMTC said. Moreover, incidents of looting of trucks carrying essential goods by goons on the highways too has reached the body, which adds to the woe, it said. "There could be of scarcity of drivers as well vehicles for carrying essential goods unless immediate pragmatic solutions are not worked out to restore confidence among drivers community and providing them a secure, empathetic and facilitating environment, especially for those who are carrying essential commodities. If not, then we are seeing a grave situation unfolding in imminent future," it said. AIMTC President Kultaran Singh Atwal said the road transport fraternity of India has always been in the forefront in the service of the nation in times of national calamities. "We would like to help the Government in the present sensitive conditions but would like to request the it for positive, proactive and pragmatic initiatives to address growing concerns of the road transport fraternity of India so that the supply chain of essential commodities is not snapped," he said. Covid-19: Panic among stranded truck drivers may cripple supply chain, says transporters' body

By Amit Kumar Das New Delhi, May 9 () Confined to their homes without access to courts due to the lockdown, India's young shuttlers are an "irritated" and "frustrated" lot, says chief junior national coach Sanjay Mishra, who feels more like a counsellor these days. The national lockdown to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, which has so far killed nearly 2000 people and infected more than 59,000 in India, is in place till May 17. "It has been nearly two months, the young players have been staying at home and now they are getting irritated and frustrated by the sheer mention of the word lockdown," Mishra, who took up the position in 2017, told during an interaction. "I keep telling them it is happening to the whole world not to you in particular and ask them to focus on boosting their mental toughness." Mishra says he tells his wards to try and control the negative thoughts which would also help them deal with tough match situations. "I tell them to remember the times when they got frustrated or irritated and lost crucial points in a match. The idea is to use these negative thoughts to address the mental weakness that they feel sometimes in a match," he said. "I have asked them to learn to control this irritation, these negative feelings, which also crop up in crucial moments and affect their performance. I tell them that dealing with this will also help in match situations." Mishra, who turned 52 on Saturday, said he has also asked them to utilise the available space at their homes to work on their movements. "Once you return to the court after a long period, it suddenly feels like the area of the court is bigger because right now, whatever they are doing, it is within 6-7 feet but when you have to move in a 20-feet court, it will be difficult initially," he explained. "So I have asked them to create a space which is equal to at least half a court and practice their movements." Mishra says the challenge for him is to find new ways to keep them motivated. "Besides the regular fitness drills like core exercises, agility training and wall practice, I also send them links of books, ask them to pick up a hobby like painting, gardening or may be cook something and share the video with them, just to keep them motivated and involved," the Raipur-based Mishra said. So when does he see badminton resuming? "No one has an answer to that question. What is happening now is once in a 100-200 year event and priority of the government will be to save lives not sports at the moment. New Delhi, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> is grappling with a profound nutritional shift, as highlighted by the latest <keyword id="20048711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lancet" source="keywords">Lancet</keyword> study, with nutritionists attributing this "double whammy" of undernutrition and obesity to a dual challenge: inadequate consumption of quality foods and easy access to cheap, unhealthy alternatives. The Lancet study, published on Thursday, found that in India, nearly 44 million women and 26 million men were obese in 2022, respectively. The analysis by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) - a global network of scientists - and the World Health Organization (WHO) also found that about 12.5 million children aged between five and 19 were overweight in 2022. "These numbers are up from 2.4 million and 1.1 million in 1990 for women and men, respectively, while for children, the baseline number was about 0.4 million," said study co-author Guha Pradeepa, from Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, told PTI. Reacting to the study findings, nutritionist Sudha <keyword id="19944928" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasudevan" source="keywords">Vasudevan</keyword>, who was not involved in the study, noted that while good quality foods are nutrient-dense like fruits and vegetables, unhealthy foods are usually processed, containing high-fat, sugar, salt, and refined carbohydrates. "We had not yet won the war against undernutrition-related health problems, but now we are additionally burdened by those coming from overnutrition or obesity, and resembling the developed nations in that sense," Vasudevan, Senior Scientist and Head of the Department of Foods &amp; Nutrition Research, MDRF, told PTI. The findings suggest trends of an "epidemiological and nutrition transition" of India, Vasudevan said. "While the developed countries might be economically equipped to deal with obesity and related healthcare burden, India is not and therefore, we are struggling," she said. The Lancet study looked at body mass index (BMI) to understand how obesity and underweight have changed worldwide from 1990 to 2022. It analysed the weights and heights of over 220 million people aged five years or older, from across more than 190 countries. The findings also highlighted a major shift in lifestyle over the past decades, including lack of exercise and healthy food, said Pradeepa. The study found that the adult obesity rate in India increased from 1.2 per cent in 1990 to 9.8 per cent in 2022 for women, while for men, it rose from 0.5 per cent to 5.4 per cent. Pradeepa attributed the spike in obesity rate to a combination of biological and social factors. "Biological factors involve constant, cyclical hormonal activity with pregnancy-specific weight gain, following which taking care of the child takes precedence. "On the other hand, social factors compel them to prioritise their children's and family's health over their own. These factors present as barriers to doing exercise for women and taking care of themselves," she explained. The findings revealed the need for innovative interventions in terms of introducing more physical activity and movement in a day, especially for women, said Pradeepa. She referred to <keyword id="20792091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thandav" source="keywords">Thandav</keyword>, which is one such intervention, developed by Dr. R. M. <keyword id="20401278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anjana" source="keywords">Anjana</keyword>, President of MDRF. Thandav is a ten-minute routine that combines the physical exercise aspect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with enjoyable dance movements. The routine thus makes the act of performing physical exercise more entertaining and recreational, and also more socially acceptable as girls and women can perform this easily at their homes, explained Pradeepa. Anjana along with colleagues at MDRF, have scientifically investigated the impact of Thandav on the physical fitness of Indian girls and women and published papers in journals such as Diabetes Technology &amp; Therapeutics.

His endeavor aims to make medical devices both affordable and available to the masses.The way Prakash sees it, labs don't need the most expensive equipment out there in order to reach profound breakthroughs. "Today people look at these extraordinary labs and forget that in the 1800s they could still do the exact same science," he <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/22/science/science-tools-anyone-can-afford.html?_r=0">told The New York Times</a>.So in 2014 he created a paper microscope, aptly named the Foldscope, that costs only 50 cents to produce.Though microscopes might seem like a mundane piece of equipment, they remain an integral part of detecting disease and analyzing blood samples. Yet despite their necessity, they're expensive. A quality microscope can cost hundreds of dollars, plus even more to keep it maintained.For labs in developing countries, these costs <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yours-to-cut-and-keep-2014-6">often lie outside their meager budgets</a>. It's color-coded and perforated to guide users in construction, but features no written instructions, making it universally understandable. All of the microscope's non-paper parts, such as its lens and battery, are built in to the sheet, keeping assembly as simple as possible.The higher resolution version of the microscope <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yours-to-cut-and-keep-2014-6">magnifies up to 2,100 times and costs around $1, while the lower resolution costs around 50 cents</a>. The entire microscope is small enough to fit in a pocket, nearly weightless, and incredibly sturdy - it can be dropped, stomped on, or doused in water and will still work.Practically, the Foldscope can help doctors correctly diagnose deadly diseases such as malaria, schistosomiasis, and African sleeping sickness. <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/manu_prakash_a_50_cent_microscope_that_folds_like_origami?language=en#t-407683">In a TED Talk</a>, Prakash explains that identifying these infections is as simple as adding dye to a single drop of blood. The mobile app is sensor-based technology that will alert users whenever they try to light a cigarette. Thus, the app will also send an alert to a friend or relative or the doctor of the user so that he can be convinced for not smoking. The app will first feed all the data of the users by creating a smoking behaviour profile. It will then analyse the effects of smoking on the user’s life followed by sending warnings about its impact on his or her health. The automated recognition feature of the mobile application is supposed to track down the addictive and depressive behaviour of the users, according to the research team. The technology reportedly can monitor body movements and predict both good and bad daily habits including such as smoking or drinking enough water. Much like a fitness app, it also shares information on sleeping patterns that impact health. The research team is also filing for a patent for its commercial release. A research team at the Indian Institute of Technology is developing an app to help people quit smoking

A new 5 pound coin to commemorate the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to mark the Hindu festival of Diwali. Available in a range of standards, including gold and silver, the special collectors' coin was designed by Heena Glover and features an image of a lotus, India's national flower, alongside one of Gandhi's most famous quotes -- "My life is my message". Building on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India, it is the first time that Gandhi has been commemorated on an official UK coin with the final design chosen by Sunak, who is the Master of the Mint. "This coin is a fitting tribute to an influential leader who inspired millions of people around the world," he said. "As a practicing Hindu, I am proud to unveil this coin during Diwali. Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in the movement for Indian independence and it is fantastic to have a UK coin commemorating his remarkable life for the first time." The coin, which goes on sale, is part of the Royal Mint's wider Diwali collection, which includes 1g and 5g gold bars in henna-style packaging, and the UK's first gold bar depicting Lakshmi -- the Hindu Goddess of wealth. The 20g gold Lakshmi bar was designed in partnership with the Hindu community in South Wales, where the Royal Mint is based. The Mint will join the celebrations at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Cardiff, where worshippers will offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi and lord Ganesha for the coming year. Chief Customer Officer for The Royal Mint, Nicola Howell, said: "As we approach Diwali celebrations, we are delighted to unveil the first official UK coin commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Mumbai, Apr 27 () After record USD 6 billion inflows into the country in the December 2019 quarter, VC investments plunged to a meagre USD 2.2 billion in the March 2020 quarter due to the coronavirus-driven uncertainties, according to a report. However, despite these challenges, the domestic market saw a number of large deals during the period under review, according to the report by KPMG. Though initially India was not as affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as China in the reporting quarter, concerns grew later because India receives a significant amount of venture capital (VC) from international firms and corporates. As a result, many deals got deferred as these investors wait to see how the pandemic affects their businesses. "While the pipeline for deals is expected to remain relatively robust, deal flow is expected to become very slow, particularly in Q2 (second quarter). Though VC investments may be challenging in the short term, it is expected to remain robust over the longer term," Nitish Poddar of KPMG India said in the report. Education technology (edutech) is expected to remain a very hot sector for venture capitalists, in addition to auto-tech, and health-tech related to fitness. Gaming can also see an uptick in interest, said the report and underlining the USD 400 million fund raising by Byju's in the quarter, USD 110 million by Unacademy, and Aakash Educational announcing its acquisition of Meritnation during the quarter. Then there was the mobility firm Bounce raising USD 150 million, the report noted. "With the lingering COVID-19-spawn uncertainty, (venture capitalists) are expected to become even more risk averse now and will take time to re-evaluate their portfolios given the current situation. However, with the pandemic basically slamming the IPO (initial public offering) market door shut at least for the short term, some companies may require bridge funding to get through the market turbulence where comes the role of the VCs," Poddar said in the report. The report also noted that given the travel and movement restrictions, cross-border VC investment will be very challenging heading into the second quarter. The inability to conduct in-person due diligence and face-to-face meetings will likely curtail a significant amount of cross-border activity, with some VC investors choosing to stick closer to home.
