<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><p class="source">Business Insider</p><p class="caption"><keyword id="1759858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sulia">Sulia</keyword> CEO Jonathan Glick</p></div></div>Sulia, a New York-based startup building a publishing platform that could be described as a more-organized, slightly longer-form version of Twitter, has raised another $4 million to $5 million in capital.</p>
<p>Venture capital firm Greycroft Ventures led the round and existing Sulia investor FirstMark Capital participated.</p>
<p>In a release, Sulia says 10 million individuals will see content produced by the site this month – up from zero 18 months ago, when the network launched.</p>
<p>Sulia does not disclose how many account holders it currently has. Much of Sulia's content is actually automatically pulled from other social publishing platforms, like Twitter and Tumblr.</p>
<p>Sulia is the creation of Jonathan Glick.</p>
<p>Glick is a high-profile figure in the New York tech scene thanks to a successful career that started at AOL, back when it was still a young company, and includes a stop the New York Times. Glick made a lot of money as the number two guy at "expert network" GLG. </p>
<p>(Glick is also married to one of New York's most impressive angel investors, former IAC M&amp;A boss and Allen &amp; Co partner Shana Fisher of Highline Ventures.)</p>
<p>Glick's theory for Sulia is that users would rather see their social content organized into channels instead of getting it in a purely chronological order the way they do through Twitter, or through some mysterious algorithm they way they do on Facebook.</p>
<p>Glick also believes advertisers will pay more to stick an ad on a channel with content is relevant to their product than in the middle of a bunch of social updates that might have to do with anything.</p>
<p>Toward that end, Sulia recently launched its first ad product, called "Featured Posts." </p>

<p>The company's big challenge remains scaling. 10 million readers in a month is a nice start, but it's a tiny fraction of the number of people who read Twitter and Facebook status updates every month.</p>

22 private student loan lenders that may help you with payments during the COVID-19 outbreak

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>x.ai</span></p><p class="caption">Amy Ingram sorting out a meeting, just like a real PA.</p></div><p></p></div></div>As huge tech companies from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-on-conversations-as-a-platform-and-chatbots-2016-3">Microsoft</a> to <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-allowing-some-developers-to-build-chat-bots-2016-1">Facebook</a> are heralding chat bots as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-on-conversations-as-a-platform-and-chatbots-2016-3">the next big thing,</a> an independent AI (artificial intelligence) company that has been quietly working on its own human-like bot for the past two years has just raised a $23 million round of funding in order to take them on.</p><p>x.ai is the company behind Amy Ingram, a virtual PA designed to schedule meetings for busy executives by taking away the long email trail that usually goes with getting time in the calendar.</p><p>To use Amy Ingram, users just need to link their calendars and then CC amy@x.ai into their next email conversation about setting up a meeting. Amy then takes over, chatting to their contact like a real PA to organize the best time, date, and location. The next thing the user receives is a calendar invite.</p><p>x.ai claims some recipients of Amy's emails in the beta testing of the product have found her to be so realistic, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amy-ingram-personal-assistant-2015-7">they have even sent flowers and chocolates</a> to what they assumed was her office. </p><ul><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/review-of-amy-ingram-the-virtual-personal-assistant-from-xai-2015-7">Read Business Insider's review of Amy Ingram here.</a></strong></li></ul><p>Amy Ingram will launch out of beta in late summer and will have a similar pricing strategy to other business platforms such as Dropbox and Slack - there will be an entry-level free version, but users and entire enterprises can opt to upgrade to professional and business editions, with the paid-for tier expected to start at around $10 per month.</p><p>The virtual PA will be channel agnostic, working not just across email, but other messaging services such as SMS, slack, or social networks. Amy is also language agnostic - she wasn't built just to understand English, she was built to understand "the language of meetings" so you could potentially send a meeting request to a colleague in Denmark, who chats to Amy in Danish, copies in a contact in China who speaks to Amy in Mandarin, and then you receive the calendar invite back in English.</p><h2>x.ai wants to create a monopoly so Google can't just take the same idea and release an Amy Ingram for free</h2><p>Speaking to Business Insider, x.ai CEO Dennis Mortensen said the company raised more capital in order to accelerate its first-mover advantage in the space.</p><p>Mortensen explained the question he was asked most by investors when pitching the company was: What do you do when Google releases a virtual PA product for free?</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>X.ai</span></p><p class="caption">X.ai CEO Dennis Mortensen.</p></div><p></p></div></div>His response is that whoever creates the best virtual PA first will own the market. If there are 10 virtual PAs available and executives unwittingly keep just making them talk to each other, they won't be optimized to work to their full potential.</p><p>Mortensen - a long-time data analytics entrepreneur who sold his company Visual Revenue to Outbrain, was the COO of Indextools when it sold to Yahoo, and sold his other company Canvas Interactive to TJ Group - cofounded x.ai in 2014.</p><p>He described x.ai back then as a "bunch of propellerheads" that "sat in a basement" with $2 million of funding from investors who wanted the team to research whether a product like Amy Ingram could even work in the real world or not. Over that time, x.ai has managed to pull in reams of data and train Amy to converse like a real human.</p><p>Mortensen said x.ai "jumped in the pool early" before other tech companies were really paying attention to the space and now Amy has already moved out of her "toddler" phase into her "teenage years."</p><p>Mortensen said: "We are racing toward this inflection point to create a monopoly. It's just like: Google can easily create a social network, but it's too late. Whoever gets there first, wins. And that's why we raised more capital. I think we will get there first and I think we will own it."</p><p>x.ai currently has 65 staff, which consists of a data science team, a back-end engineering team, and other roles including "AI trainers" and data annotators. The company plans to use the new investment to create an acquisition team and an enterprise sales team, Mortensen said.</p><p>x.ai's Series B round brings the company's total funding to date to $33.3 million. The latest round of financing was led by Two Sigma Ventures. <p>Kinsa's <a href="https://www.kinsahealth.com/">Smart Stick Thermometer</a> does much more than just read your temperature.</p><p><span>The FDA-approved thermometer pairs with a free companion app that allows users to quickly log their symptoms, get accurate temperature readings, and receive medical guidance. </span></p><p><span>Once the thermometer reads that you have a fever, it can give you basic medical advice like whether you should see the doctor right away, if there are any medications you should avoid taking, and how high of a dose is recommended for certain medications.</span></p><p><span>You can also manually enter symptoms and photos, which acts as a handy log of the illness and its progression when you do go to the doctor's office. </span></p><p><span>According to Inder Sing, Kinsa's founder and CEO, this feature has been particularly beneficial for parents with multiple kids, as it can be tough to recall the progression of a sickness over time.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.kinsahealth.com/">Kinsa</a></span></p><p class="caption">The thermometer pairs with an app.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Singh started the company back in 2012 after working for five years as the executive vice president and director of drug access for the Clinton Foundation's Health Access Initiative. </span></p><p><span>He visited several third-world countries and saw the spreading of illness firsthand. He decided he wanted to create a connected tool that could help people better manage their health. </span></p><p><span>The company went with a thermometer, since it's often the first tool a person turns to when they're sick, especially for parents with small children.</span></p><p><span>But Kinsa's Smart Stick Thermometer also functions as a communication tool, where users can tap into a social network that allows them to get advice from one another. </span></p><p>The company wanted to help people understand where and at what rate sicknesses are spreading near them, which is why they created a feature that allows them to <span></span><span>anonymously aggregate health information in a particular area. </span></p><p>Currently, Kinsa aggregates health information from 120 schools across the US, and will be adding 500 schools to that list this year. </p><p><span>They're also looking to expand the data at a larger scale, starting with either zip codes or entire cities (depending on the number of people within a zip code), and eventually expanding it nationwide.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.kinsahealth.com/">Kinsa</a></span></p><p class="caption">Here is a sample of what the "local health" of a city looks like.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Users </span><span><span>can also engage in discussions through the "groups" feature. A former Clinton Foundation exec raised $14.1 million to create a smart thermometer he hopes will help stop diseases from spreading at the Olympics

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>HopSkipDrive</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>As the new war over who you should trust to drive your kids heats up, one startup just made a key hire that could set it apart from the pack. </p><p>The Los Angeles-based HopSkipDrive plans to announce today that it's hired Eyal Gutentag, Uber's former general manager for LA. </p><p>Gutentag, a father of two, joins the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hopskipdrive-wants-to-be-an-alternative-to-uber-for-your-kids-2015-7">startup cofounded by three moms.</a></p><p>"Eyal brings significant operational expertise, rideshare expertise, as well as experience at scale," said Joanna MacFarland, HopSkipDrive's cofounder and CEO. "He's also a dad of two young kids so he fits well culturally and shares the importance and the priority that we place on safety."</p><p>HopSkipDrive has a harder battle than Uber because of its focus on safety - you wouldn't want just anyone with a car to drive your kids around.</p><p>Hiring drivers to keep up with demand takes longer since the company does a full background check including fingerprinting. All in, the process takes between two to three weeks for a driver (which the company calls "caregivers") to sign up. In comparison, Uber drivers can be on the road in as little as three days, depending on their background check process.</p><p><span>Extra features are also baked into the app to help parents plan and keep their kid safe.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>HopSkipDrive</span></p><p class="caption">HopSkipDrive's Eyal Gutentag, former Uber general manager for Los Angeles</p></div><p></p></div></div>Parents can request that their driver sign the children out at school or walk them all the way to the baseball field, McFarland said by way of example. If the baseball coach isn't there, the driver knows to wait - not just drop the kid off. </p><p>Her company's support team watches each ride, and the parents can also monitor it on their app. And, unlike Uber, the drivers are allowed to drive with their own children in the car. McFarland sees this as a plus and a safety feature of its own: parents are likely to feel safer about the ride and the driver can be a working parent and not worry about their own childcare.</p><p>Wilson says the company's mission is not to go after Uber, but provide a different service entirely. </p><p>"It's really a different product altogether," MacFarland says. "Because of the nature of a child being in a car and what they can or cannot understand, our drivers will park and go sign out a child out of school or walk a child get into a class. If they get to the baseball field and the coach isn't there, they'll wait because they're caregivers and that's what caregivers do."</p><p>Still, HopSkipDrive faces an already crowded market when it comes to ride-sharing for kids. Its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shuddle-the-uber-for-kids-releases-new-app-2015-6">main competitor Shuddle</a> has raised $12.2 million in two funding rounds. There's also <a href="http://www.kangadoapp.com/">Kango</a>, which organizes not only rides, but also childcare. Zum, another on-demand childcare in a car service, <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3055718/meet-zum-an-on-demand-ride-service-for-kids">just launched last week</a>.</p><p>To compete and scale beyond the tens of thousands of rides it has done, HopSkipDrive has some fresh funding to stick to its mission. The company plans to announce Tuesday an additional $10 million in funding, led by New York-based FirstMark Capital. An 'Uber for kids' startup just poached a key executive from Uber itself

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NewsCred</span></p><p class="caption">NewsCred cofounder and CEO Shafqat Islam.</p></div><p></p></div></div>NewsCred, a content marketing software platform that allows brands to plan and measure their content campaigns and license relevant articles from the likes of The Guardian, The Financial Times, and the BBC, has just raised another multi-million dollar funding round, which it says demonstrates that "content marketing" is swiftly moving up the agenda in terms of marketers' priorities.</p><p>The $42 million Series D growth equity funding brings the total funding in NewsCred to date up to $88.8 million. This round is being led by FTV Capital. Liron Gitig, FTV Capital partner, will also join NewsCred's board of directors.</p><p>NewsCred - an eight-year-old company that has offices in New York, London, and Dhaka - says in a press release that it will use the investment to grow its UK and European operations.</p><p>Shafqat Islam, NewCred CEO and cofounder, told Business Insider the size of this round - which is almost bigger than its total funding to date - shows how content marketing has grown beyond a small marketing channel. "Content marketing is becoming marketing," he said.</p><p>Content marketing is hard to define. It's everything from blog posts, to videos, to licensed articles from news outlets. Some people in the marketing industry argue "content marketing" is simply everything a brand does to communicate with its customers. But others define content marketing as a channel in its own right. Market research company PQ Media predicts <a href="https://www.marketingmag.com.au/news-c/content-marketing-will-300-billion-industry-2019/">content marketing will become a $313 billion industry by 2019.</a></p><p>Islam said: "As the market has matured, we used to sell into people who ran content marketing divisions, or were the content editor, or were social media marketers. The last 18 months it has become CMOs who have realized content is a much more strategic and foundational part of what they do. You ask CMOs unaided 'what are your top three priorities?' everyone will put content in the top three."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NewsCred</span></p><p class="caption">Funding in content marketing companies is on the rise, according to NewsCred's research.</p></div><p></p></div></div>That puts martech (marketing tech) companies like NewsCred in a strong position when it comes to attracting the attention of VCs. And that comes at a time when <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/cmo/2014/06/02/why-ad-tech-stocks-are-going-south/">ad tech companies have been taking a beating on the public markets.</a></p><p>Islam said: "VCs will not touch the ad tech market with a 10-foot pole, and a lot of ad tech companies are repositioning themselves right now - some as martech or some as SaaS [software as a service] - to try to get funding."</p><p>Back in June, Menlo Partners managing director Venky Ganesan concurred with this view, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/cmo/2015/06/10/ad-tech-firms-find-venture-capital-funding-is-running-dry/">telling The Wall Street Journal</a>: "[Investment has] almost evaporated. These companies are struggling to even get meetings."</p><p>That said, there have been a couple of major ad tech funding rounds recently: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/adtech-company-radiumone-raises-54-million-in-equity-and-debt-2015-6">RadiumOne raising $54 million</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tubemogul-raises-829-million-in-secondary-market-offering-2015-6">TubeMogul raising $83 million</a>, both in June.</p><h2>Content is "immune" from ad blocking</h2><p>Ad sellers are also battling right now with the rise of ad blocking. Almost 200 million people worldwide use ad blocking software on a monthly basis, up 41% year-over-year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pagefair-and-adobe-2015-ad-blocking-report-2015-8">according to a report from Adobe and PageFair.</a></p><p>Islam thinks the rise of ad blocking is directly correlated with the rise of content marketing.</p><p>"Logistically, from a purely tech point of view, [because content marketing is loaded in the same payload as the actual organic content on a page] it makes us immune and bullet-proof to ad blockers," Islam said. "But there's something bigger going on. All marketing is suffering. <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">Advertising</keyword> has become an enemy of the people. People say it's terrible, disruptive, interruptive, and hasn't seen any innovation in the last 20 to 30-years."</p><p>Content, on the other hand, is relevant, interesting and can be measured for performance than display ads because humans share content with their friends online, whereas non-human bots can "click" on ads, according to Islam.</p><p>Litron Gitig, FTV Capital partner, said in a statement: "The marketing landscape is converging and content is at the core. Quality content is crucial for building brands and driving sales. It's like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lulu-a-women-only-app-that-rates-men-2013-4">Lulu is for men</a>, or Yelp is for restaurants.</p>
<p>Founded by former Ladders CEO Marc Cenedella, Knozen pits two coworkers against each other and asks the user a series of questions such as, "Which person is friendlier?" or, "Who is more likely to buy cookies from a girl scout?"</p>
<p>The user then selects which coworker best fits the description and is told how many other colleagues voted the same way. At least seven people from an organization need to sign up for Knozen before they're allowed to start rating each other to protect everyone's identity.</p>
<p>Knozen might sound like a recipe for disaster, but Cenedella argues that it's merely  a way to "bring personality to the internet" and that the content is always "positive and upbeat." You won't find questions about a co-worker's appearance, for example.</p>
<p>Eventually, Cenedella wants his app to become a "personality API" that businesses can tap into during the recruitment process. He feels that candidates should be initially screened based on how well they'll fit into a company's culture, not just on their paper credentials. Investors such as FirstMark Capital, Lerer Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Box Group, and Whisper co-founder, Brad Brooks have <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/14/knozen/">given Cenedella $2.25 million</a> for Knozen. Knozen went live in the App Store on Friday and it's presenting at New York Tech Meetup on Tuesday. Cenedella has been building Knozen for a year with a handful of engineers.</p>

Knozen Is A New App That Lets You Anonymously Rate Your Coworkers

T-shirts.</p><p>"From the beginning, I've always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to create the Vimeo for custom T-shirts," Abramson told Tech Insider. "T-shirts were something that, unlike other garments or products, they can be higher-margin and so mass appealing. You can have a variety of different designs targeted at a variety of different people."</p><p>Abramson bought back <a href="http://bustedtees.com">BustedTees</a>, an e-commerce site focused on funny T-shirts from College Humor, Saturday Night Live, Funny or Die, and other brands, from Diller in 2011. But he wanted to expand beyond comic tees and create a space where artists could sell their work.</p><p>So, in 2013, he founded <a href="http://teepublic.com" target="_blank">TeePublic</a>, an e-commerce site that allows artists to upload designs to the site that are immediately manufactured and sold, with printing and shipping costs covered completely by TeePublic. </p><p>And TeePublic has been quietly killing it. The site has been cash flow positive since its second year, and Abramson expects TeePublic to sell 1 million T-shirts this year alone.</p><p>And it's doing it all without outside funding, a conscious choice Abramson (who has a side gig <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/firstmark-capital-just-hired-the-star-entrepreneur-behind-college-humor-vimeo-and-busted-tees-2013-9" target="_blank">as a venture partner for venture capital firm FirstMark Capital</a>) made to run his business on his own terms. </p><p>"Our vision since day one has been to try to build a platform that empowers designers to be entrepreneurs," Abramson said. "We're designer-first and customer-second."</p><p>Artists upload their designs to the site, and then their design will immediately go on sale on the site, with TeePublic footing the bill for printing and shipping. Every design will be printed and remain the creative property of the designer. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.teepublic.com/designs/564110/edit">TeePublic</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Though tees remain the heart of the site, designs can also be sold as hoodies, crewnecks, smartphone cases, laptop cases, notebooks, mugs, posters, or canvas prints.</p><p>T-shirts either cost $14 or $20, with designers bringing in $2 or $4 per shirt sold, respectively.  </p><p>Abramson said that its product team is frequently looking for new ways to make designs more discoverable so designers can boost their profits. TeePublic also provides resources for designers to help them promote their site, including tutorials on how to promote their shops and space in the site's email newsletter to customers.</p><p>"We're always thinking of development features that allow designers to be on the platform and make it easier for them to sell," he said. "It's not completely altruistic. The more money that a designer can make, the more they'll promote their site. That benefits them, but it also benefits us." </p><p>Jamie Stone, an Orlando, Florida-based artist behind <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Punksthetic/" target="_blank">Punksthetic Art</a>, says TeePublic's simple platform was its main appeal. "It allows customers to buy your products consistently and without much of a lull."</p><p>"And I have to commend them on how many sales they tend to have, which brings in a lot more sales and exposure than my other shops," Stone said.</p><p>Casandra Ng, an artist based in Malaysia who has sold 100 products since opening up her shop in 2014, had similar praise.</p><p>"What I like about TeePublic is its user interface design, it is simple and efficient," Ng said. In fact, it's a pretty saturated market, with competition like <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/yoshirt-designs-funky-on-demand-clothing-2015-11" target="_blank">Yoshirt designs</a>, <a href="https://www.threadless.com/" target="_blank">Threadless</a>, <a href="http://www.redbubble.com/about" target="_blank">Redbubble,</a> and <a href="https://www.neatoshop.com/faq#artist" target="_blank">Neatoshop.</a> Both Stone and Ng sell their designs on multiple platforms. </p><p>"Back in 2000 to 2001, it really felt like the Wild West and a land grab. It felt like if you had an idea, you could go out and do it and get some traction before even anyone else got on it," Abramson said. "Now, almost every time I see something I like, it turns out that there are six other high-level teams trying to solve the same problems."</p><p>But Abramson has still found a way to be successful. He wouldn't disclose specific revenue figures, but he says TeePublic is the fastest-growing business he's worked on. The company grew by 150% in 2015, and Abramson said he's expecting the company to grow by another 80% this year. </p><p>"We continue to grow at a pretty amazing rate, and I don't see any reason why we can't continue to do it at that rate. Every day, every couple of weeks, we make noticeable changes to the website," he said.</p><p>"I don't think we're going to have a business that looks wildly different from today," he said. <p></div><p></p></div><em>Neil Vogel is the CEO of About.com and cofounder of The Webby Awards.</em></p><p>In early 2003, I bought a 1994 green and silver Ford Bronco, the model made famous by either O.J. or the movie "Varsity Blues," depending on your demographic.</p><p>It cost $3,000 on eBay, plus a trip to a used car dealer in deep New Jersey.</p><p>I immediately removed the roof, added a small Philadelphia Phillies sticker, and, as it was as big as my apartment, loaded it with gear.</p><p>At that time, I had just left my job at Alloy Media + Marketing, where I was one of the first 10 employees - we had grown to over 500 by the time I departed (I ran corporate development).</p><p>Immediately prior, I was an investment banker working 80 hours a week. So for the first 10 years of my "career," I had no balance in my life, I was burnt out, and I needed a break. As I had very few actual responsibilities at the time (meaning I didn't have any), I decided take some time off to recharge. So I bought the truck.</p><p>The truck was my friend and travel partner. For the following six months of spring and summer, I visited every beach I could, broke my arm mountain biking somewhere in the south, had late nights in strange places with new people, and eventually found my way back to NYC (as one should).</p><p>The truck broke down constantly (a challenge because I can't fix anything), but I didn't care, and dudes at gas stations loved working on it, which helped.</p><p>The time off also served an incredibly valuable purpose - it provided the space to figure out how I wanted to lead the next part of my life. By the end of that summer, I had an incredible amount of energy for a new challenge, and it was very clear to me I had the passion to start something of my own.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>I didn't know what exactly I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to do it. It felt like I was making a big decision, and it was scary.</p><p>Come the fall, I (along with a partner) started a company called Recognition Media, which today owns and produces the Webby Awards as well as eight other awards shows and media properties. I'm still chairman - my partner took over as CEO in 2012 - and we now have great private equity investors as well.</p><p>I then joined FirstMark Capital as a venture partner (entrepreneur-in-residence), and for the last two years I have been CEO of About.com.</p><p>I have been incredibly lucky to be able to spend my time working on things I love and am passionate about, and it is all the result of taking the time to figure out how I wanted to spend my time and energy. This startup wants to bring super-fast, wireless internet to your home

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LinkedIn</span></p><p class="caption">Ron Faris, founder and CEO at Virgin Mega.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Nike announced <a href="http://news.nike.com/news/nike-digital-studio-2016">on Tuesday</a> it had acquired Virgin Mega, a little-known 12-person startup that sits within Richard Branson's Virgin Group, to help it launch a new "digital studio" based in New York City.</p><p>In the release announcing the acquisition (which didn't reveal the terms of the transaction), Nike said the studio will be responsible for "expanding the community and functionality" of Nike's core mobile experiences.</p><p>So what does that mean? And why did Nike acquire an entire company to do so when it has its own marketing team and works with a roster of agencies that include AKQA, R/GA, and Wieden + Kennedy?</p><p>We caught up with Virgin Mega founder and CEO Ron Faris to find out.</p><p>Faris first joined the Virgin Group in 2006 as director of brand marketing and experiences. He was responsible for the free Virgin Mobile music festival and tie-ups with artists and sports brands, from Lady Gaga to the New York Knicks.</p><p>In 2013, Faris went to Branson with an idea for a new Virgin company: a tech startup dedicated to fan communities and shopping on mobile phones.</p><p>Faris said: "I left my post running marketing at Virgin Mobile to start a tech startup, mostly because I just felt I knew that millennials in particular were seeking new ways to interact with the brands they loved through mobile devices. Through my experience with working with companies like BuzzFeed, mobile, and music festivals, I saw that millennials require an experience when they connect with brands they love and they like to connect emotionally."</p><p>Virgin Mega was somewhat of a stealth startup. It didn't do a lot of press or attempt to hang on the coat tails of the Virgin brand name. It was also venutre backed, raising undisclosed seed investment from FirstMark Capital and QueensBridge Venture Partners. </p><p>Faris' plan with Virgin Mega was to build a team of engineers and product staff who would use data to test new types of mobile experiences.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Virgin Mega</span></p><p class="caption">Cam'ron "Killa Crunch" cereal.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The first release was "MegaLine" an app that let fans to compete with each other as they waited in a digital queue for  exclusive products. Users could earn "jumps" that would move them up the queue to get closer to the products when they went on sale.</p><p>The types of exclusive items ranged from a breakfast cereal and t-shirt designed by hip hop artist Cam'ron, A$AP Rocky jewelry, and a Valentine's Day cronut necklace.</p><p>Faris: "At music festivals I was always taken by how, right before the gates would open, you'd see tons of kids in line, in the rain, all super excited. There's a lot of energy that happens in lines. Not all lines are bad. A lot of magic can happen in lines. It's that tailgate where everyone is sharing their common love for something - be it for a football game, a concert, or Nike sneakers."</p><p>A short while ago, Virgin Mega met with Nike to discuss how they could work together to create a mobile experience for the so-called sneakerhead community - fanatical sneaker fans who often spend hours in line for the latest shoes.</p><p>"We started exploring discussions about how we could work together and as we were getting to know one another, the synergies were there, there was a great cultural fit, and one thing led to another," Faris said. "Honestly the passion they have for their community and their products is exactly the type of energy we seek in the clients we work with and it was undeniable that after several conversations, this [acquisition] would be a dream come true."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Rick Wilking/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Faris added that Branson and the team at Virgin believe the two brands share a lot of "common DNA," so they appreciated the team leaving to go to Nike made sense.</p><p><a href="https://www.virgin.com/richard-branson/fascinating-virgin-company-you-have-never-heard-was-just-acquired-nike">In a blog post</a>, Branson wrote of the acquisition:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I am sad to see Ron and his team go but they will nw create a new digital innovation studio in the heart of New York City where they will invent and incubate next generation mobile experiences. I can't wait to see what they'll cook up next with a brand as customer-focused and creative as Nike!"</p><p>Faris and the team's first focus is making the Nike SNKRS app more community focused - and there's every possibility that will come with a little help from the music relationships he has spent so many years building up at Virgin.</p><p><a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/3985083-nikes-nke-ceo-mark-parker-q4-2016-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single">In Nike's most-recent earnings call</a>, the company outlined its commitment to investing in digital to grow its business.</p><p>Chief financial officer Andy Campion said "demand creation" - marketing that educates consumers about why they need a new product - increased 2% in fiscal 2016 "as we strategically invested in digital consumer engagement and sports marketing while gaining efficiencies in traditional <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>." The company's operating overhead also increased 8% for the full year as Nike made investments in consumer-facing digital products.</p><p>CEO Mark Parker added: "Mobile innovation and personal services are dominating the landscape. Nike just bought a little-known tech startup inside Richard Branson's Virgin Group

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>x.ai</span></p><p class="caption">Dennis Mortensen, founder and CEO of x.ai.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A few weeks ago I was emailing Tom Blomfield, the CEO of startup bank Monzo, to arrange lunch. He passed me over to his assistant, Amy Ingrams, by CCing her into an email.</p><p>Amy and I exchanged eight emails fixing up a date and then another five when Blomfield had to rearrange. Only then did I spot something odd in Amy's email signature: "Artificial intelligence for scheduling meetings."</p><p>It turns out that I had been talking to an algorithm the whole time.</p><p>"I'm very happy to hear not that we've fooled you but that we've created a design that felt so natural that you probably said 'thank you' or 'would you be so kind' or something similar," its creator, Dennis Mortensen, told Business Insider. "That, I think, is a testament to the design success of the agent."</p><p>Mortensen is the founder of x.ai, the New York startup that has developed Amy and her male counterpart Andrew Ingrams (Their initials are AI.) The virtual assistant does one thing and one thing only: arrange meetings.</p><p>"We're not trying to recreate Siri or Google Assistant, we're trying to make this one agent - Amy, and/or Andrew - which upon being asked can make sure that the three of us end up on this phone number at this time," Mortensen told BI (x.ai's PR manager was the third person on the line.)</p><h2>'It's very easy to imagine but it's very hard to execute on'</h2><p>Mortensen had the idea for Amy/Andrew after selling his last company. He was reviewing an old diary and realised he had 1,019 meetings in 2012 and had rescheduled 672 times.</p><p>Getting a computer to arrange your diary is harder than it sounds. Mortensen says: "We're about 90 people who've been working on it for 3 years. That might come as a surprise but it's one of those things where, similar to a self-driving car, it's very easy to imagine but it's very hard to execute on. We've just invested the time and effort into it."</p><p>It is an expensive project too. Since launch in 2013, x.ai has raised over $35 million from investors including Japanese telecoms giant SoftBank and FirstMark, a New York venture capital firm that has backed companies like Pinterest, Netgear, and Shopify. Its most recent round was in April this year <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/xai-raises-23-million-in-series-b-2016-4">when it raised $23 million.</a><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>x.ai</span></p><p class="caption">How x.ai works.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Mortensen believes x.ai can justify the big investments and become a company on the scale of Slack or Dropbox.</p><p>"Not a single person in your office doesn't do meetings," he says. "Even the most hardcore engineer does meetings. Not a single person says they love setting up meetings, they love that ping pong back and forth. They hate it."</p><p>Sean Masters, <a href="https://www.socialprise.co.uk/">the founder of on-demand project and staffing platform Socialprise</a>, told BI: "Scheduling meetings is just remarkably inefficient. She [Amy] just takes that away and it makes me more productive.</p><p>"I'm a bit of an advocate of her. She's actually got a bit of sass. One of my project managers has rescheduled a meeting with me three times. Amy responds saying she wants to reschedule this meeting, again." (Masters and I weren't meeting to discuss x.ai or connected by the company - the praise was spontaneous.)</p><p>X.ai offers a basic, free version of its service to individuals, letting them schedule up to 5 meetings a month, and recently launched a professional edition for the self-employed, costing $39 a month. The plan is to offer a business edition for teams next year.</p><p>Hundreds of thousands of people have used the system to date, Mortensen says, and millions and millions of emails have gone through the system. Masters estimates that using Amy saves him at least 3 hours of email admin a week.</p><h2>'There's still ambiguity and we're still training on that'</h2><p>There was controversy surrounding the company earlier this year when a Bloomberg article in April <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-18/the-humans-hiding-behind-the-chatbots"> claimed that much of the work involved in the emails was done by a team of "AI trainers" who were "hiding" behind the service.</a></p><p>Mortensen insists the author got the wrong end of the stick. Humans are not secretly drafting the emails but are guiding the system to help it get smarter.</p><p>"If you look at what Uber did when they put about 30 [self-driving] vehicles on the streets of Pittsburgh - in every single one of those self-driving cars, there'd be two Uber employees," he says. "One is an engineer and one to override the cars prediction of what to do next - a.k.a. the trainers. That is how you move from a situation where only humans ride cars to one where only machines drive cars. If you think of nothing else, you should think of that analogy."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>x.ai</span></p><p class="caption">X.ai's New York offices.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Emails that enter the system are broken down into "tasks" for the algorithm to look at. Amy or Andrew then make a guess at what is being said and the AI trainers either confirm or reject the conclusion. This is how the algorithm learns.</p><p>Mortensen says: "An AI trainer is sitting at a console saying I agree what the machine labelled as Wednesday is correct. I agree that 4pm is indeed a time reference, correct. Or if someone says 'have a good weekend' you need to say that's not relevant. If the machine thinks it is relevant, you have to say that is incorrect. Some things have been fully automated and no human will look at it."</p><p>The writing side of the x.ai system is "100% automated," Mortensen says, and the "vast majority" of the reading side does not involve human supervision. It is only when complex phrasings or unusual circumstances arise that humans step in.</p><p>Mortensen gives an example: "Our ability to work out if you want to cancel a meeting is not fully solved. Sometimes we have a very high competence level and sometimes we won't because people are too friendly. You would say I would love to chat today but things have taken a turn, we should get a coffee in the future - that is you being kind about saying the meeting is cancelled. That is tricky for a machine."</p><p>Monzo's Blomfield told BI: "It's really great for one-on-one calls and meetings. It's saved me a bunch of time. It's not yet perfect when there are multiple participants or a human assistant involved."</p><p>Mortensen says: "There's still ambiguity and we're still training on that."</p><h2>'We either solve this, or we die trying'</h2><p>Of x.ai's 93 employees, 39 are AI trainers. All are based at the company's New York offices, on 25 Broadway. A consequence is that when <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/review-of-amy-ingram-the-virtual-personal-assistant-from-xai-2015-7">my colleague Lara O'Reilly tried out the service in July 2015</a> she noticed that often emails from Amy would only be sent in the afternoon in London - i.e. when New York woke up. (She noted at the time that the experience was also "far from seamless.")</p><p>Mortensen insists this is no longer the case.</p><p>He says: "The system today runs 24/7, 365 and we have a median response time of 9 minutes today. The system is very different today to what it was a year ago or even earlier in 2016. The response time we're running with, it's obvious we do more emails at higher accuracy, fully automated, without any verification."</p><p>Masters, who began using the service a few months ago, says there were "a couple of teething issues by they're just learning." He says he would have had the same issues with a person - he would have to get a sense of how they work and they would have to get used to him. Otherwise, he has nothing but praise for the service.</p><p>Ultimately, the goal is to do away with the AI trainers altogether and have Amy and Andrew talking directly to each other, arranging meetings for people behind the scenes.</p><p>Mortensen says: "We are making a bet on this being something we can turn into a completely machine-driven process. We are in very good shape and the vast majority of the conditions that we do are fully automated."</p><p>He adds: "We have no plan B. There is no outcome of this venture where we are a semi-outsourced setting.
