Though anticipated, when it became official that the Melody Queen of India, <keyword id="31278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lata-Mangeshkar" source="Orion">Lata Mangeshkar</keyword>, is no longer among us, it hit the collective consciousness of the nation like a sledgehammer. The only consolation was that she may have passed on, but her voice, which moved our hearts and provided succour to our souls for more than seven decades, will forever be with us. Like all inspirational stories, Lataji's early struggle to establish herself in the 1940s is one that we cannot ever forget. In those days, she would take a BEST bus and travel from her south Mumbai home regularly to meet Naushad Ali at his Khar West bungalow or in the studios, hoping for a 'singing break' under the legendary music maker's baton. In the vicious Mumbai monsoon, she would come to Naushad's home, wearing her trademark sari, carrying an umbrella but totally drenched, shivering and barely able to speak, let alone sing. The music director would offer her piping hot tea and cookies to soothe her, but no songs ... yet ... . "I felt her voice was not yet 'ripe' for my style of music," said Naushad, the perfectionist, in a conversation with this writer. He was trying to justify not giving her an early break. "To improve her diction and control over words, I advised her to learn and practice Urdu, which she did ... and finally, she was ready to record for me." The first choices of Naushad were the reigning stalwarts -- Noorjehan, Suraiya, Shamshad Begum, Zohra Ambalewali, to name a few. With time, trained by her father, Dinananth Mangeshkar, Lataji grasped the maestro's advice and got her first major hit -- 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949) -- composed by her mentor Naushad. With it, she 'arrived' in the film industry. Thereafter, top music directors of the era wooed her, and they included Sachin Dev Burman, Husan Lal-Bhagat Ram (brothers), Ghulam Haider, Sardar Malik, Ghulam Mohammed, Jaidev, Salil Chowdhary, C. Ramchandra, Shankar-Jaikishan (partners), Roshan, Madan Mohan, M. Zahur Khayyam, Kalyanji-Anandji (brothers), Laxmikant-Pyarelal (partners), Sonik-Omi (uncle-nephew), Ravi Kumar Sharma or 'Ravi', Sudhir Phadke, Sajjad Hussain, Usha Khanna, and even A.R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan, Anand-Milind and Jatin-Lalit, among the younger crop of baton wielders. Producers and directors vied for Lataji's unique voice and style for their top heroines, especially because she could 'mould' her voice to suit most heroines. Without doubt, she had become the first among women singers, a position that Mohammed Rafi enjoyed among the men. Yet, there was a music director who remained aloof from Lataji -- with haughty pride -- and yet rose to the top echelons of the music industry -- the incomparable O.P. Nayyar. "I found Lata's voice too thin, too shrill, which did not suit my compositions," Nayyar had once said, claiming he was "the only music director who succeeded in Bollywood without Lata's voice". He added: "I needed a more vivacious, richer, healthier voice of, say, Shamshad Begum, Geeta Ghosh-Dutt, Asha Bhosale." One woman singer, Suman Kalyanpur, was blessed with a voice rivalling that of Lataji's, but she was content being in the shadows, yet she thrived on enduring masterpieces composed by some of the music directors. As Lataji's singing style matured under master music directors, her voice helped heroines who acted or danced to her tunes catapult to stardom, such as Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Ameeta, Beena Rai, Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Tanuja, Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Nutan, Saira Bano, Sadhana Shivdasani, Babita Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi, Neetu Singh, Madhuri Dixit, and many others in the post-1980s, right down to the youngsters, notably, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Karisma Kapoor. After the exit of Noorjehan from India and the fading away of other stalwart female singers, by the late 1950s/early 1960s, Lataji was firmly perched on the top of the heap and brooked no nonsense from anyone -- producers, directors, composers, siblings or contemporaries -- attempting to clamber anywhere close to her roost. Bollywood is full of stories of how Lataji ring-fenced her position till the very end, often raising the hackles of her female peers, although male singers, such as Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Manna Dey (all deceased) and others, chose to maintain a professional rapport with her. Nevertheless, there were tales of how Rafi once bore the brunt of her "other side", or certain composers quivering as she gently declined to sing for them after they allegedly dared to commission some other female singers, for whatever reason. Of course, powerful filmmakers such as Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Kamal Amrohi, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra and the likes had no time for tantrums. Born on September 28, 1929, as the oldest child of a musically inclined family in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) -- comprising father Dinanath, Lataji, Meena (Khadilkar), Asha (Bhosale), Usha and sole brother Hridaynath -- she was tutored by her dad from the age of five and also acted in his musical stage plays, till death in 1942. Helped by a close family friend, Master Vinayak D. Karnataki, she got a foothold in singing and acting that year with a first Marathi song and a maiden Hindi song in 1943 before shifting to the film industry capital in 1945. In Bombay (now, Mumbai), she learnt classical music and continued singing the odd songs, till her big break with 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahinka Na Chhoda' ('Majboor', 1948), with full help from Ghulam Haider, whom she later described as her "godfather". With a colossus such as Noorjehan still around, Lataji continued her with a few more hits -- 'Aayega Aanewala' ('Mahal', 1949) and 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949), heralding her entry with a bang in big-time Bollywood. Simultaneously, she sang in different Indian languages with aplomb, non-film songs, with her range encompassing classical, tragic, melodious, erotic, melancholic, light, mischievous, depending on the composer, or the heroine, or the song situation. After the seniors passed away or faded out, Lataji sang expertly and easily with the gen next of male singers such as S.P. Balasubramaniam, Amit Kumar, Shabbir Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, Anwar, Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam, and astounded her listeners with the seemingly "undying" power and youthfulness of her golden voice. Over the decades, she was decorated with a multitude of rewards and honours -- three Padma awards, five Filmfare Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award -- capped by the Bharat Ratna in 2001. More than that, state governments named awards and institutions after her. Lataji sang at prestigious live concerts or charitable events, enthralling global audiences, picked up more overseas accolades, such as France's highest civilian honour, Officer of the Legion of Honour, in 2007, briefly dabbled in high-end merchandise, such as signature jewellery and perfumes, launched a production and music house, and entered into international music collaborations. Death has only removed her physically. The legacies she leaves behind will outlive her for decades. The doodle marks his 101st birth anniversary. Though he is popularly known as Kaifi Azmi, his full name is Sayyid Athar Hussein Rizvi. At the age of 11, he composed his first poem. Needless to say, he grew up to become one of India’s most renowned and cherished poets of the 20th century. He has an array of ghazals, nazms and mushairas to his name. In 1942, when India was still under British rule, Azmi answered Mahatma Gandhi’s call to Quit India. He left his hometown in Uttar Pradesh and moved to Bombay to write for an Urdu newspaper. A year on, he published his first set of poetry named Jhankar. The man who wore pyjamas all day Arts also run in his family. He was awarded three Filmfare awards for Garam Hawa, Padma Shri Award for Literature and Education, and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2002 — which is the highest literary honour in India. Technology giant <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>’s today’s doodle is a tribute to one of the versatile actresses of Hindi cinema, <keyword id="42509" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nargis-Dutt">Nargis Dutt</keyword>. 
 Born as <keyword id="163269" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fatima-Rashid">Fatima Rashid</keyword> but known by her screen name Nargis, the actress made her screen debut as a child artist in Talash-E-Haq in 1935. However, her acting career began in 1942 with Tamanna. 
 
Nargis garnered worldwide acclaim for her role of Radha in the Academy Award-nominated film Mother India (1957). Her performance in this movie, later, won her Best Actress trophy at the Filmfare Awards. 
 On March 11, 1958, Nargis married with her Mother India co-star <keyword id="18536" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sunil-dutt">Sunil Dutt</keyword>. Together, the couple was blessed with three children: actor <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword>, Namrata Dutt and former Congress lawmaker <keyword id="1009" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priya-Dutt">Priya Dutt</keyword>. Sonam Kapoor's critically acclaimed 'Neerja,' based on the life and death of braveheart airhostess <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/movies/Sonam-Kapoor-To-Play-Neerja-Bhanot-In-Biopic/articleshow/46766082.cms">Neerja Bhanot</a> was honoured with the Best Film Award. 
These are the 64th National Film Awards, and the jury was headed by director Priyadarshan. 
 
The awards were held at the National Media Centre, where Ajay Devgn's 'Shivaay' also won the award for Best Special Effects.

Akshay Kumar wins the National Award for best actor; 'Neerja' wins best film

3. Best Taboo Relations Movie: One simple question: Did they mean incest? Game of Thrones must be laughing at this stupidity right now. Why give an award for something that IS a way of life in almost every porn movie? 
 
4. Best Fetish Manufacturer: IS THIS EVEN REAL?! The winner, incase you’re interested is Spartacus Leathers.

Currently, its testing <keyword id="6662415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="instagram-lite">Instagram Lite</keyword> in India, to make the platform accessible to everyone.</li><li>We spoke to <keyword id="248909" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manish-Chopra">Manish Chopra</keyword>, Director and Head of Partnerships, <keyword id="736869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook-India">Facebook India</keyword>, to understand the organization’s areas of focus for the next year and how its working on making its offerings more accessible to users and more effective for businesses and advertisers.</li></ul>While the world almost came to a standstill in 2020, owing to the pandemic-induced lockdown, it was digital players like Facebook that kept the world moving, even while people stayed indoors. The pandemic led to people spending more and more time on the internet, and understandably, Facebook saw an increase in the time people were spending on their platform. According to data from eMarketer, in H1 2020, people flocked to Facebook so they could share information and keep in touch with friends and family while staying at home. That led to user increases in nearly every world region. Currently, India has the largest user base of Facebook users. With around 272.2 million users in India in 2020, the country’s user base is expected to swell to 329.1 million by 2024. It therefore shouldn’t come as a surprise that the company is serious about its presence and growth here. During Facebook’s Fuel for India event recently, Mark Zuckerberg reiterated India’s importance in the global scheme of things for Facebook. During the chat, he said that the largest communities for Facebook and WhatsApp are in India and <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> is also getting there. Facebook has been testing and rolling out new features from here. From the launch of Reels on Instagram, to Watch on Facebook and Payments on WhatsApp, India is playing a crucial role in the way products are being designed for the future. Facebook is currently testing Instagram Lite in India. The app, which is less than 2 MB in size, has been created to bring the core Instagram experience to people currently unfamiliar with the app. The platform is also giving a push to its video offerings, opening up opportunities for advertisers and businesses to get closer to their target audience, virtually. We recently caught up with Manish Chopra, Director and Head of Partnerships, Facebook India, to understand the organization’s areas of focus for the next year and how its working on making its offerings more accessible to users and more effective for businesses and advertisers. Excerpts: Q) You're currently testing Instagram Lite in India. What are your plans for taking it to the market? When will you launch it officially? Our research conducted in India to ascertain the attractiveness and comprehension of new products showed that compromised internet experience as a result of low memory phones and heavy-sized apps was a barrier. This set the context for the test of Instagram Lite, and India is a primary test country for it. The Instagram Lite app is created to bring the core Instagram experience to people who do not have an Instagram experience today. The app is made for Android and this new version has improved speed, performance, and responsiveness. The experience is similar to the core Instagram app experience, though there are some features that are not currently supported such as Reels, Shopping and IGTV. The app will be available in Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. However, we don’t have the timing to share on when the app will be rolled out more broadly. Q) The pandemic led to many behavioural changes among consumers. What were some of the biggest changes you noticed during the past few months, especially in India? In the context of 2020, there’s been a fundamental change in digital consumption, which we’ve witnessed by the engagement we’ve seen on the Facebook family of apps. In many countries hit hardest by the virus, total messaging increased by more than 50% on WhatsApp and Messenger, in March. Similarly, in places hit hardest by the virus, voice and video calling doubled on Messenger and WhatsApp. In India, there was a 60% rise in Instagram Live views in March, on a week-on-week basis. Creators focused on keeping their communities informed and inspired. This began with social messages delivered through challenges like the #SafeHandsChallenge and the use of the ‘Stay Home’ sticker. It went on to keep people inspired, like Deepika Padukone and The Live Laugh Love Foundation released a Guide on Instagram that focussed on mental health. On Facebook, new Groups were formed to help people. These include groups like Mahita Nagaraj’s ‘Caremongers India’, a purely volunteer driven group providing frontline assistance ranging from cooked meals to transportation, to the needy, senior citizens, expecting mothers, and the physically challenged during the lockdown. A bunch of national and regional musicians, such as Armaan Malik and Lisa Mishra, performed in Live music concerts called ‘Live In Your Living Room’ to keep people entertained and people also raised funds for COVID-19 relief efforts through our platforms. We facilitated this with the launch of Facebook Fundraisers, which has an in-live donation option too, using which creators like Varun Purthy and Ashish Chanchalani raised funds as part of Facebook Social for Good Live-athon. The year also offered new opportunities, for instance, with short-form content, offered by new features like Reels. This has helped discover a new generation of influencers who’ve grown exponentially on Instagram. Few creators like Ankush Bahuguna and Sakshi Sindwani have also focussed on breaking stereotypes associated with gender and body types. Q) We saw people warm up to live videos during the pandemic, artists, musicians etc used it extensively to stay connected to their fans. What will your strategy be to make sure that people keep using your live features even once they start going out and once things get back to normal? Our community is at the heart of our platforms. We’re hearing them and constantly innovating. For e.g at the start of the lockdown, we saw the rise in Live’s and need from people to save that content to their IGTV and hence we introduced that feature. Earlier this month, we also launched Live Rooms, which gives people the ability to go live with upto three additional people on Instagram Live. With this feature, creators have more opportunities to have conversations with their communities, and to expand their reach and use cases for Live, such as starting a talk show or a podcast, hosting a jam session or co-creating with other artists, leading to more engaging Q&amp;As with those they’re going Live with, or simply hanging out with friends. This feature first was tested in India with creators, and then India was among the two countries it has launched in, ahead of a global rollout. Even with Instagram Lite, the context for the launch is research done in India, where people mentioned a compromised internet experience, as a result of low memory phones and heavy-sized apps. Hence Instagram Lite is less than 2MB in size and is built to deliver an Instagram experience that remains fast and reliable for more people. Beyond product innovation, we continue to work with public figures, creators, groups and organizations to discover opportunities where our platforms can add value to people’s lives. Q) How are advertisers making the most out of your Social Video offerings? Instagram launched a bunch of branded content updates at the end of November. These include: Branded content tag on Reels and Live - To help increase transparency, the Branded Content tag has launched in Reels, and will begin testing in Live in the coming weeks. New creation flow for Branded content ads - Until today, Branded Content ads could only be created by promoting the existing posts from creators. Instagram is now launching a new workflow where advertisers can create Branded Content ads without the need for creators to post organically on Instagram first. Now brands have more flexibility with fewer constraints when they want to run Branded Content ads. This new process has been designed with creator control in mind - creators can approve and pause any ads published from their handle. Branded Content ads in Stories - Branded Content ads in Stories can now include tappable elements, such as @mentions, location and hashtags. We want brands to have access to organic Stories’ creative that is native and authentic to the Stories experience. Branded Content ads with Product Tags - We’re introducing the ability for businesses to promote branded content posts with product tags. Q) How are you strengthening your offerings for advertisers? How are you making sure they are able to make the most of your video offerings to connect with their audiences? As a company, we are deeply committed to supporting the economic recovery of both small and large businesses, and especially understand the support that small businesses need right now to recover from the crisis. As part of our $100 million global grant program to support small businesses across 30 countries, we recently announced a grant of USD 4.3 million for small businesses in India. More businesses are moving online as a result of the digital acceleration fueled by the pandemic, and we’re keen to make this journey seamless for them through skilling, tools, and customized support. We recently released a local offline to online SMB Guide in Hindi and English that is free and publicly available but we also proactively reached out to 9 million small businesses across the country to ensure that it reaches the businesses that need it the most. We’ve also taken several of our industry-leading digital skilling programs online to ensure seamless learning and support in these times; Our flagship program for skilling small businesses, ‘Boost With Facebook’ is now being delivered in Hindi and English through Facebook Lives. We have video ad solutions for all the distinct ways in which people create, connect with, and consume video. Keeping in mind the increasing time being spent on mobile phones, and the reducing attention spans, we encourage advertisers to make Thumbstoppers - short-form mobile video ads that are built for the mobile, and tell the story effectively in a few seconds. We also have In-Stream ads for videos that are longer than three minutes on Facebook. These ads enable advertisers to tell a more complex story to people who are actively engaged in watching content with sound-on. We’re also focused on developing formats that are interactive and embrace the way people want to consume in feed. That’s why we have ad solutions including Poll ads, Augmented Reality (AR) ads, Instagram poll stickers for Stories ads, and Brand Playables. Interactive Ads enable instant two-way communication and get people involved, which is a natural fit for how people, especially the youth, engage on mobile phones. Q) Facebook has now started actively advertising in India, with the IPL as well as the Diwali ad. Why did you start advertising now, and what will your marketing strategy be going ahead? Consumer marketing is a relatively new strategic area of focus for Facebook and one that will significantly increase our global investment in communicating directly to consumers. Over the past year, our consumer marketing team has been focused on two important things - building trust with people who use our products and services and to build value around each of our apps. We launched the ‘More Together’ campaign for Facebook in India, earlier this year in March as a demonstration of our core belief that people can do more together than alone. Over the past few months, we have seen numerous instances where these stories have played out on our platform, where people can connect and come together to find and offer information, help, and support in the face of these unprecedented times. Many of these stories are on display at our first Facebook Fuel for India annual dialogue event. Q) Going ahead, what will your key focus areas be, to further grow your presence in India? One of our key agendas is to focus on providing social video experiences, through both <keyword id="4243508" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook-watch">Facebook Watch</keyword> and Instagram. Videos now make a third of all posts for Instagram in India, and India is one of the leading markets for Facebook Watch. Our video strategy for India is truly reflective of the width of consumer tastes in the country. We are investing in forging partnerships to bring culturally relevant, of-the-moment videos across sports, entertainment, news and lifestyle like ICC, FilmFare Awards and IIFA Awards to people. Additionally, we are also launching India-first products on Watch in line with the local consumer tastes and content preferences on the platform in response to the growing consumer affinity for video. India was among the first countries where music videos have been launched along with a music destination on Facebook Watch to enable people to view their favorite music videos and come together through music. We’re also listening and taking inspiration from what our community wants - and they’re telling us they want the opportunity to create and watch short-form, edited videos. Keeping that in mind, we launched Reels. The unique part of Reels is a dedicated tab, which allows people to be discovered by Instagram’s large and diverse community. We continue to innovate with IGTV too. This year, we partnered with a set of creators, such as Kusha Kapila, Arjun Kanungo and Shirley Setia for launching their own IGTV shows with original content. Moving forward, we will continue to invest in creating and facilitating active social viewing experiences on our platforms where the consumers can not only watch, but also have an opportunity to comment, like, share groups messages, use reactions and polls, and even hold Watch Parties; making the experience interactive and personalized.

Facebook is strengthening its social video experience for its next phase of growth in India

Looks like it’s time for mending all the broken relationships in <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>, and flaunting the same in style. 
 
A day after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Guess-who-released-Salmans-first-look-in-Bajrangi-Bhaijaan/articleshow/47430828.cms">Shah Rukh Khan released the first look </a>of once-rival Salman Khan’s upcoming movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan, we are hearing the news of <keyword id="6355887" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shahid-Kapoor">Shahid Kapoor</keyword> and <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword> coming together for a movie. 
 It’s not hidden from anyone that Shahid was once in an intense relationship with <keyword id="2165" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor">Kareena Kapoor</keyword>, who broke up with him after falling in love with Saif Ali Khan while filming the movie Tashan. This obviously must not have gone down too well with Shahid, who however chose to be wise and never washed his dirty linen in public. 
 
Even though both of them were reported to be on amicable terms after the break-up, no one ever saw them under the same roof after their break-up. The brunt of their estranged relationship was bore by the makers of Milenge Milenge, a movie shot when they were a couple but released years after they broke up. Both of them were not interested in making any appearance to promote the movie, which led to its blink-and-miss release, making it one of the biggest flops of 2010. 
 
Well, what’s gone is gone, it seems. After winning a number of awards in Tamil and Telugu films, Asin made an impressive Bollywood debut with Ghajini opposite Aamir Khan. The actress won almost all debut awards for the film that year. Yadav has proved time and again how greatly he values the country laughing (at him) rather than governing it and his latest attempt at a comedy sketch underlines this very mission- ‘Hasega India, tabhi toh badhega India.’ 
 The comedy sketch video, written, directed and starring none other than <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>’s superman, Lalu Prasad Yadav premiered yesterday on the internet, after which box-office hits, likes and views have made its success definite and if you listen in vigilantly, you can still hear the box-office registers ringing.

The video shows our favourite funnyman Yadav, standing on a podium addressing an election rally in Patna and its comical factor is upped by not just his world-famous facial expressions or ever-growing ear hair, but by the subject he prepares to take potshots at. 
His comedy sketch makes fun of the man who cannot be ridiculed, Lord Make Fun of Me Not, better known to the country as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nitish-Kumar-asks-PM-Modi-to-take-back-his-DNA-remark-again/articleshow/48423099.cms">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a>.

The plot picks up from Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing a package of Rs 1.25 lakh crores for the development and progress of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bihar-is-going-to-tip-Indias-political-scale/articleshow/47896199.cms">Bihar</a>, which has long been demanding a ‘special status’ for itself. 
 
Yadav took on his chief opponent in the upcoming state assembly elections and started off by mocking Modi’s inefficient public speaking skills, which makes whatever he says unclear to the ears of the audience. 
 
Not one to merely point out inadequacies, Yadav offered a piece of unsolicited life-changing advice to Modi as well. 
 
“Arrey Modiji, theek se bolo, nahi toh nas fat jayega” 
(Narendra Modi ji, please talk properly, otherwise the veins on your neck will break) 
 
In order to make his point, Yadav advances to mimic the exact way Modi announced the package, replete with staccato bursts of speech accompanied with long pauses while making pompous promises. A perfectionist, he also keyed in Modi’s famed hand movements. Add to that, Yadav’s fitting comparison of Modi announcing the package to an auctioneer. 
 
(A day earlier, Narendra Modi dramatically made the announcement of the package while interacting with cheering crowds and asked. “How much do you want? Rs.50,000 crores, 60,000, 70,000, 75,000, 80,000? I am announcing a package of Rs. 1.25 lakh crores.") 
 
 
 
To say that he was absolutely accurate in his mimicry would be a great insult to his majesty’s skills. With this sketch, Yadav unknowingly set a standard in the world of slapstick comedy that even the best comedians will never be destined to attain.

The Imitation Game: Lalu mimics Narendra Modi, does it better than the PM himself

It is 15th of August in 1975; Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay has found its way into the theatres. While the country men have switched on the patriotic mode in them, Bollywood was preparing to redefine the arena of Indian commercial cinema like never before. A film that defines patriotism in a newer way, thrills with its suspense even if you watch it for the zillionth time and shows how a friendship in India thrives has come a long way and it’s now a part of every Indian’s growing-up discourse. 
This Independence Day marks the 40th anniversary of Sholay. Anupama Chopra, the renowned film critic has said in her book ‘Sholay- The Making of a classic’ (Penguin India), “Over the years, Sholay, has transcended its hit-movie status. It is not merely a film, it is the ultimate classic; it is myth.” 
 
While, over the last 40 yrs much has been said and written about the film, we at Business Insider list for you 20 amazing facts you still don’t know about Sholay: 
 
 
1. Sholay is a record breaker in many ways. It is also India’s first 70 mm film, which had stereophonic sound. 
 
2. Amjad Khan’s ‘Kitney aadmi the’ dialogue has become a cult. Yet, Khan was almost rejected because the casting director found that his voice was not ‘powerful enough’. 
 
3. Many things about this movie were real even the bullets in the climax scene. It is said that one spare bullet had nearly missed Amitabh. 
 
4. Gabbar’s gang member Sambha was played by Mac Mohan. Though he has become an indispensible part of the movie, he just has one dialogue in Sholay. 
 
5. Amzad Khan wasn’t the first choice for the role of Gabbar. It was Danny Denzongpa who was supposed to play the role. 
 
6. What DDLJ is to Maratha Mandir, Minerva Theatre of Mumbai is for Sholay. This theatre screened Sholay for 5 years continuously in all three shows of the day. And till 1980, it was a major hit. 
 
7. Sholay has proved this long back that awards don’t determine a movie’s credibility. Though a blockbuster, Sholay had won just one Filmfare award, that too for editing. 
 
8. The movie, after the initial part, is all about Gabbar and his notorious activities. However, in a 204 minute film, Gabbar appears in just 9 scenes. 
 
9. While the official release date was 15th August 1975, the movie was launched on 2nd October in 1973. 
 
10. Estimated at Rs 2 crores, Sholay’s budget over ran to an extra one crore. It took almost two and a half years to complete the movie. 
 
11. Previously, scriptwriters weren’t really paid in Bollywood. Sholay changed everything. It set the scripwriters as real creator of hit movies. 
 
12. Getting requisite permissions had prevented Thakur Saab from being an army officer. The character of Thaakur saab was conceived as a retired army officer. Having not got necessary clearances from the army, the role was changed to a police officer. 
 
13. The role of Jai played by Amitabh Bachchan was initially planned for Shatrughan Sinha. 
 
14. Dharmendra was nursing a deep crush on Hema Malini during the shooting of the film. He wanted to play the role of Thakur initially, but settled for playing Veeru when he realized that the character would be paired against Hema Malini. 
 
 
15. The light boys were bribed by Dharmendra to spoil his scenes with Hema Malini. This led to numerous retakes and Dharmendra’s chance of getting closer to Hema intensified. 
 
16. The original ending of Sholay has Gabbar being killed by Thakur. 
 
 
17. The Censor Board didn’t approve of too much violence in the end. Sholay was made to re-shoot several scenes to get rid of extreme violence. 
 
18. Ramgarh , the village shown in Sholay is actually a town called Ramanagara, which is 50 kms from Bangalore. Since 80s, it came to be called Ramgarh to commemorate the film.
