India’s Got Talent Winners: Where Are They Now?

<h2></h2><ul class="summary-list"><li>In a recent <keyword id="67741" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Simulation">simulation</keyword>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-simulated-asteroid-couldnt-stop-impact-europe-2021-5">a fictitious asteroid was approaching Earth</a> but experts couldn't stop it.</li><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> has led seven such simulations, and the participants only fully stopped the asteroid once.</li><li>It shows <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-asteroid-simulation-reveals-need-years-of-warning-2021-5">how challenging it would be</a> to stop an Earth-bound <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> rock, even with ample warning.</li></ul>An international group of space experts have been bested by a hypothetical asteroid. Again.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-simulated-asteroid-couldnt-stop-impact-europe-2021-5">In a planetary-defense simulation that NASA led last month</a>, more than 200 participants from about two dozen countries learned that a fictitious space rock was set to strike Earth in six months. They put their heads together to investigate every possible way to avoid the impact. But in the end, the group determined that no existing technologies could stop the asteroid, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-asteroid-simulation-reveals-need-years-of-warning-2021-5">given the limited warning time in the scenario</a>. The rock ended up razing eastern Europe.Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, helped design and host the recent simulation, as well as five previous exercises like it that the agency has hosted since 2013. In total NASA has helped lead seven asteroid-impact scenarios in the last eight years."Every one of these has a little different bit of a twist on it," Chodas told Insider.But the outcomes have, for the most part, had a worrisome similarity: In all but one, at least part of the incoming space rock has hit Earth."There is a certain, you know, morbid aspect to it," Matthew Holman, an astronomer from Harvard University who participated in NASA's 2015 and 2019 simulations, told Insider.The simulations' grim outcomes reveal how challenging it would be to stop an Earth-bound asteroid in real life - even with years of warning. But the repeated failures in these exercises, experts say, still serve a crucial purpose: They help the world prepare for a crisis like this by teaching governments and scientists how to communicate and share information ahead of an impact. "Practice makes perfect," Chodas said.<h2>The score - <keyword id="81841" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Asteroids">Asteroids</keyword>: 6 Humanity: 1</h2>Chodas said last month's simulation set the participants up for failure."It's what we call a short-warning scenario," he said. "It was, by design, very challenging."But it wasn't the toughest scenario Chodas has helped to create, and not even the one with the shortest timeframe.During NASA's first impact simulation, done in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, scientists and government officials had to determine what to do about an asteroid the size of the Statue of Liberty that was set to strike in just <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/ttx13/NASA.FEMA.Exercise.Report.2013.pdf">five weeks</a>. The participants, much like the group last month, found themselves with little recourse given the short lead-up time. They determined it would be impossible to stop that space rock from crashing into the Atlantic Ocean near Virginia.The resulting tsunami, the participants estimated, would be 50 feet high and devastate a section of the US East Coast.It was no coincidence that NASA led that first simulation in 2013. In February of that year, a house-sized asteroid entered the atmosphere above Chelyabinsk, Russia. It shattered windows, collapsed buildings, and injured more than 1,000 people. No one on Earth saw it coming. <div type="image" title="asteroid russia Chelyabinsk" height="3744" width="5616" msid="82800921" hostid="261"></div><a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/ttx14/">The next year</a>, NASA and FEMA tried again - that time, the fictitious asteroid in the simulation was nearly three times bigger, but it was discovered about seven years before the expected impact.The earlier a space rock is discovered, the higher the chances that scientists can stymie an impact. The best tools currently available are nuclear explosives that could be detonated near an asteroid to break it into less dangerous chunks, and spacecraft that could slam into an asteroid to knock it off its trajectory.NASA is about to test that latter technology with its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. In the fall of 2022, a NASA probe is set to fly to the asteroid Dimorphos and purposefully hit it.<div type="image" title="DART nasa asteroid mission spacecraft" height="1406" width="2500" msid="82800926" hostid="261"></div>Chodas thinks <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-asteroid-simulation-reveals-need-years-of-warning-2021-5">five years' warning</a> is the absolute minimum to successfully deploy one of these options, though other experts suggest we'd need <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-asteroid-simulation-reveals-need-years-of-warning-2021-5">at least a decade</a> to plan, build, and launch an anti-asteroid mission from scratch.Brent Barbee, an aerospace engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told Insider that no spacecraft that could serve this purpose is just sitting "ready to go and dance.""It has to be built on demand," Barbee said.The advanced notice in NASA's 2014 simulation enabled the participants to do just that. They sent a spacecraft to ram into the asteroid and deflect it away two years before it hit. But even then, a 164-foot chunk of the asteroid broke off because of the spacecraft's force, and the rock started heading for Texas' Gulf Coast. Two years wasn't enough time to launch another deflection mission, so once again, Earth took a hit.<h2>In one simulation, an asteroid fragment wrecked New York City</h2>By <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/pdc15/">2015</a>, NASA had looped in space agencies from several other countries to participate in its exercises. The first simulation with this international group was similar to the prior year's: After successfully deflecting an asteroid spotted seven years in advance, the participants found they couldn't stop a fragment of the rock from hitting India. It exploded with the force of a small bomb.<div type="image" title="asteroid broken up" height="2250" width="3000" msid="82800930" hostid="261"></div>Chodas calls this outcome "asteroid splitting." It's no accident splitting has appeared in multiple exercises, he said, because he thinks "it's very conceivable something like that happens."Ideally, Chodas added, asteroid-deflection missions would be adaptable and able to retarget any unpredictable pieces that break off. By now, you're seeing the pattern: In a <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/ttx16/ttx3_final_report_1may2017_final_3.pdf">2016 NASA simulation</a>, the group was also unable to stop an asteroid, even though it was spotted four years in advance. The 400-foot space rock would, the participants estimated, impact a 325-square-mile area near Pasadena, California.During the <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/pdc19/">2019 exercise</a>, experts decided to try to stop a hypothetical asteroid from hitting Denver, Colorado, by crashing into it with several spacecraft. That wound up changing the asteroid's path, but in the process, a 262-foot chunk of rock broke off and struck New York City.Chodas described that exercise as "a worst-case scenario" - it ended with Central Park decimated by a fireball that released as much energy as an atomic bomb.<div type="image" title="central park tower nyc" height="1667" width="2500" msid="82800935" hostid="261"></div>In last month's simulation, the Czech Republic and Austria didn't fare much better.Humanity's big - and only - win in these exercises came during the <a style="font-size: 15px;" href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/pdc17/">2017</a> one, in which the participants spotted an Eiffel Tower-sized asteroid 10 years in advance. After sending a scouting mission into space, scientists discovered that it was actually two space rocks orbiting each other. This is known as a binary asteroid. NASA gave the simulation that curveball, Chodas said, because one-third of asteroids tend to be binary. Rather than ramming a spacecraft into that asteroid pair, the experts chose to blow them up with nukes - and succeeded. <h2>Despite repeated failures, experts are learning valuable lessons</h2><div type="image" title="hypothetical impact" height="915" width="1120" msid="82800936" hostid="261"></div>Since 2013, these simulations have enabled experts to practice how they'd communicate with one another and with the public ahead of an impact. They think through how they'd facilitate evacuations, what they'd say to keep the public calm and informed, and how to responsibly share information between governments. Holman said that each successive NASA exercise has improved on its predecessor."People have absolutely gotten better over the years," he said, adding that more and more countries participate every time. In particular, scientists have refined their ability to use a hypothetical asteroid's size, rotation, and orbital path to predict where it will hit and how much damage it will do. Those assessments can help governments decide how to best reduce the severity of an impact and move the right people out of harm's way.The simulations have also revealed that such assessments change quickly as scientists learn about an incoming asteroid. During the earliest stages of an exercise, the possible impact location could be anywhere on the globe, Barbee said. That estimate shifts as the simulation progresses, so data might then suggest an asteroid will crash into Africa, only to point to Europe as the most likely target soon thereafter."I'm glad we're discovering those sorts of things now by working through the details of simulated scenarios before being confronted with an actual scenario," Barbee said.Morgan McFall-Johnsen contributed reporting.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9R5PMIEiiM&amp;app=desktop">YouTube</a></div></div></div>Monday night, after the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to hear the case between Argentina and a group of hedge funds and effectively ordered the country to part with $13 billion in one go, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner gave a passionate, defiant, Oscar-worthy speech.
It was a half an hour long, and it was all about bonds.
In any other country, people would immediately switch to 'Dancing with the Stars', but Argentina has an odd, fatalistic relationship with international markets - one that explains the Fernandez administration's defiant stance on this case, and its overall consumption of the Argentine imagination.
Fernandez was preparing her people for another tangle with its twin enemies- debt and inflation. "I think this merits a quick look at our history," she said.
Fernandez took it back to the country's dictatorship in 1976, the first time international debt turned to inflation and was, she said, "without a doubt the most powerful trap we'd been in keeping us from growth, the development of Argentina, it created poverty, backwardness, homelessness, a lack of infrastructural development, investment in education, in science..."
What she is describing is the defining moment of Argentine history - a moment many in power lived through themselves. Over and over again in the speech, as she discussed the country's struggle with foreign debt, she repeated "and this wasn't the end."
Because in Argentina it's never the end.
 From there she went on to the latest default in 2001 and the IMF's loan to the country, which she called a "fictitious operation" to ensure that money made in Argentina never stayed there to aid the country. Instead it went abroad, to feed the beast that was the international market.
She goes on naming specific bankers, specific debt deals now familiar to her people as potential harbingers of disaster. This was a bedtime story - the kind of thing you've heard your whole life and will tell your own kids - not a news report.

She describes Singer and his group as vultures (NML) quite clearly. They bought Argentine bonds when they were "garbage", "worth nothing". Only people intending to speculate would buy these bonds.
These investors, eating the carrion of the international financial market, are vultures.
They want to make 1,608% off of the suffering of Argentines, from bringing the horror of the past into the present and future.
"So fine, there are some that say: Why not pay the $1.5 billion and end it," she said. "Because there is another more serious problem that the 1% of holdouts create. There's another 7% that, if we pay NML their $1.5 billion, Argentina has to pay them $15 billion... That's half of all the reserves in our Central Bank."
(She's being generous, it's more than half - they've got about $28.5 billion.) It's not that she doesn't want to pay, she insists, it's that she needs a payment plan.
In any case, because of this situation, she says that NML demanding payment in full at once is extortion - one that has wider implications for financial markets. It's why so many entities and countries stood with Argentina and against NML.
And she told those countries in her speech:
"I have a confession to make to all of you: Our loss did not surprise me, I expected the loss. This morning when I talked to the President of our Central Bank, Juan Carlos Fabrega, he told me 'President, you were the only one who believes this would happen.' Yes, because this is not an economic problem, or a financial problem, it's not a judicial or legal problem; it's the result of a business model on a global scale that, if it continues, will produce unbelievable tragedies."
She should know, her country is obsessed with them.

India’s all set to becoming the world’s economic superpower, but there is another darker side that exists, which successive governments in India have not been able to eradicate from the land. Yes, we are talking about <keyword id="56851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Begging">begging</keyword>, a problem that India has been battling since time immemorial. The cultural aspect of begging has more shades than the economic ones. But, in the present context where India has been making strides in modern technology, begging is something that needs to be paid immediate attention to, and there are enough reasons to attend to it today than tomorrow. 
 <keyword id="2796945" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="begging-in-India">Begging in India</keyword> has reached mammoth proportions. A <keyword id="6391159" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="beggar">beggar</keyword> woman with an ever sleeping child is a familiar sight in all metros. No sooner does the light turn red, tiny, soiled hands with empty expressions in their eyes seem to materialize from nowhere. As soon as the light turns green, they turn obscure probably never to be seen again. 
 
Children are more adept at begging than the elders. Could this have to do with the cultural aspect? The smaller the beggar is, more the alms that land on their tiny hands. In somewhat skewed manner, begging is what is threatening India’s march into the ‘good days’ ahead. Because, as is the universal truth: begging is moral corruption at its core. It is a major social problem of the 21st century. 
 
Children are kidnapped and maimed to suit the profession. Usually children younger than 3-4 years old are kidnapped from crowded places, trains or buses, or even hospitals to ensure their tracing becomes a challenge. 
 
According to an estimate, more than half a million beggars seem to be dotting the streets of cities that hand out alms to them. As far as the religious side is concerned, beggars are a regular feature near places of religious worship where people’s sense of philanthropy is high at any given point of time. 
 Experts may opine that beggary is a result of economic exclusion in the run up to the progress and development. Unplanned urbanization has contributed in a great way to beggary having increased in cities and metros. Causal factors could be under-employment, <keyword id="6358907" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword> or poverty. 
 
But, there is more to begging than what meets the eye in India. Poverty is for real, make no mistake about it. In the modern world, where everything has a profit angle, begging too is not devoid from that. Most often, children who beg on streets and women who knock on the car window shields evoking a sense of pity and guilt to ensure they are given their share of a few rupees, hand over their earnings at the end of the day to their gang leader. A mafia is what keeps begging from disappearing with the advent of a social and economical solution. 
 
There are laws against begging in India. Despite their presence, begging remains a hugely profitable venture for mafia groups, which in turn work on more anti-social aspects creating and maintaining the existing inequality and crime. 
 
In more ways than one, begging makes economic sense for those involved in the activity. First, it does not demand any investment to begin with. It has no maintenance costs. A beggar can operate alone, and no one keeps a check on his earnings. One just has to look dirty, soiled and have a perpetual look of helplessness writ large on their face. This profession yields much more around places of worship, and around those areas which are regularly visited by tourists who are often overtaken by the striking poverty that shows on a beggar’s persona. 
 
There have been instances of beggars maintaining bank accounts with balance running into quite a few lakhs, which they would use to have a luxurious lifestyle. Though such instances are less, they are not fictitious. They do exist in real life. 
 
Legal framework describes begging as an activity that involves receiving alms at a public place, whether under the pretence of singing, dancing or some such activities. Kidnapping and maiming a minor for the purpose of begging is punishable under Indian Penal Code. Country is dotted with beggar rehabilitation centres, but somehow, all the steps taken through the years seem to have failed to address the problem at its core. 
 
In India, roughly 60,000 children disappear each year and majority of them turn up on streets as beggars. Those children, who beg, are under the watchful eyes of their mafia leaders, who are normally well-networked with police forces too. So, tracing a minor child is usually a herculean task for parents who have lost their child. Chances are that by the time they set out to look for their son or daughter, they (children) would have already been maimed beyond recognition. 
 
Eventually, these children end up being criminals, or drug addicts having taken the route to painless memory with their peers. So long as the network is not cracked, the alms-raking profession will continue to have patrons in various forms.
