<ul><li>A campaign ad making the rounds online reads, ‘Kaise khaoge unke haath ki rotiya, jab paida hone nahi doge betiyan.’</li><li>It essentially reads, ‘If you don’t let daughters come in to the world, who’s going to cook for you?’ </li><li>The twitterati has expressed their rage over the regressive nature of the new campaign message.</li></ul>Instead of the usual ‘<keyword id="609268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Beti-Bachao">Beti bachao</keyword>, beti padao’ slogan, an image of wall graffiti that’s gone viral has given birth to ‘<a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/trending/trending-in-india/beti-bachao-roti-banwao-twitter-reactions-5194514/">Beti bachao, roti banwao</a>’. And the twitterati are enraged over the photo, criticising it for the regressive message it sends. At the center of it all it is the graffiti that endorses protecting girls by saying, ‘Kaise khaoge unke haath ki rotiya, jab paida hone nahi doge betiyan’. That translates to, ‘If you don’t let daughters come into the world, who’s going to cook for you?’ ‘Beti’ means daughter in Hindi and thus, the first part of the slogan reads, ‘Save your daughter’, which is simple enough. It’s the second part where things get sticky. The original slogan propagates ‘<keyword id="6354595" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="beti-padhao">beti padhao</keyword>’ or 'educate your daughter’, whereas the latter endorses ‘<keyword id="6571862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="roti-banwao">roti banwao</keyword>’, which means making the traditional Indian bread, roti. Sounds a lot like ‘go make me a sandwich’, doesn't it?

The original Beti Bachao campaign was started by the Indian government, and is intended to thwart gender discrimination and ensure the survival, protection and education of girls. It’s a government scheme with the objective of preventing gender biased sex selective elimination and ensuring education. The campaign urges people who have daughters, to educate them. Its success may be <a href="https://feminisminindia.com/2018/05/22/beti-bachao-beti-padhao/">debated</a>, but there are few who would disagree with the premise that it’s, at the very least, progressive. On the other hand, the wall graffiti that’s been going viral online is the exact opposite. <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> users have called the display ‘primitive’ and lacking ‘logic’. The mural has been deemed extremely inappropriate.

]]></cdata></div> <keyword id="56887" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Female-infanticide">Female infanticide</keyword> is one of India’s biggest problems and the Beti Bachao campaign came into effect after reports of declining <keyword id="265354" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="child-sex-ratio">child sex ratio</keyword> (CSR) in the country in 2011. Their ‘Model for Master Trainers’ even states that they will enforce ‘Immediate interventions to eliminate various forms of gender biased discrimination against girl child in areas of cultural and educational sectors.’ Whereas, the wall graffiti is enforcing ‘gender biased discrimination’ in the area of ‘cultural sectors’.

Regressive spin on a government campaign is going viral in India

In 2007, <keyword id="2102599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dr-Ganesh-Rakh">Dr Ganesh Rakh</keyword> set up a 25-bed Medicare General and Maternity Hospital in the Hadapsar suburb of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Civic-Panel-Approves-Pune-Light-Rail-Project-Despite-Protest/articleshow/37172407.cms">Pune</a>, with the aim to help underprivileged patients. But, today he’s doing more than just that. 
 As his hospital has grown, so has the intensity of his work. In a bid to fight <keyword id="56887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Female-infanticide">female infanticide</keyword>, Dr Rakh kicked off a unique initiative on January 2012. In line with the initiative, Dr Rakh wouldn’t charge any delivery fees if a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/How-Indian-NGOs-are-marrying-Philanthropy-with-Social-Innovations/articleshow/46426703.cms">girl child</a> is born. 
 
Not just that, the entire <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hospitals">hospital</a> celebrates the birth of the girl by distributing sweets. 
 
In an interview with Deccan Herald, Dr Rakh had said that female infanticide is rampant because of the presence of regressive social norms, which he believes are not only anti-women, but also anti-girl child. 
 
He further states that as a medical professional, he has seen the torture that a mother undergoes when she comes to know that she has delivered a girl. 
 Hence, Dr Rakh tried doing his bit to help reduce the social stigma of delivering a <keyword id="6366837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="girl-child">girl child</keyword> and has waived off maternity charges in over 200 deliveries, both normal and caesarian. 
 
Initially, his initiative was met with a lot of apprehension from his gyanecologists and paediatricians. 
 
“When I told them that I’d decided that the hospital will bear the expenses of neo-natal care, they were understandably quite skeptical as to whether I would be able to run a hospital or not,” he admits. 
 
Relatives gathering on the day of the delivery are a given sight in any hospital. But, what we fail to notice is the scenario that happens after they are made aware of the sex of the infant born. 
 
“They hug each when a boy is born and disappear when a girl is born,” Dr Rakh states. 
 
It was this scenario and the added mental trauma on expecting mothers that changed Dr Rakh’s thinking and lucky for him, he found support from unexpected quarters. 
 
As word of his initiative kept spreading, he was contacted by a host of colleagues and doctors working in interior districts such as Ahmednagar, Beed and Solapur wrote to him saying they will stop carrying our procedures such as unwarranted medical termination of pregnancy and indiscriminate sex discrimination tests in solidarity and welcome a girl child by motivating families. 
 
Some doctors, like Dr Pravin Dungarvar who runs Anand Hospital at Kunjirwadi at Haveli Taluka started charging half the amount in case a girl was born, in a bid to show his support for Dr Rakh’s initiative. 
 
While in Solapur district, Vinod Kekan, the sarpanch of Vanjarwadi village had even announced a prize of Rs 10,000 to any person who gave information or helped stopped female foeticide. 
 
Kekan thought if one man could do it, why couldn’t an entire village?

This Pune doctor has been waiving off
maternity charges everytime a girl child is born

<ul><li>India celebrates the 187th birth anniversary of educationist <keyword id="1011723" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Savitribai-Phule">Savitribai Phule</keyword> — the country’s first female teacher who also contributed to setting up of over 17 schools in the country. </li><li>In times when only higher castes were permitted to attend schools, she started the school for untouchables — and the first girls school in the country. </li><li>She had set up ‘Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha’ that supported rape victims, pregant women and crack down on female infanticide. </li><li>She passed away on March 10, 1897 after contracting plague.</li></ul>Today, India celebrates the 187th birth anniversary of educationist Savitribai Phule — India’s first female teacher who helped set-up over 17 schools in the country. In 1848, Savitribai along with her husband Jyotirao Phule, founded the first girls' school in Maharashtra — which was unheard of in those times. Three years later, she founded three schools that taught over 150 girls — higher than the number of boys in government schools. In times when only higher castes were permitted into schools, the duo started a school for untouchables as well. She also introduced the concept of regular meetings with parents to push girls for education. In the 1850s, the couple founded two educational trusts — the Native Female School, Pune and the Society for Promoting the Education of Mahars, Mangs — which were later run by Fatima Begum. Begum was Savitribai Phule’s friend and partner in social empowerment — who became the country’s first muslim female teacher, following Phule’s steps. However, these reforms did not go down well with the society and was often abused by conservatives. That turned her into a crusader for social justice as well. The mother of Indian feminism She took many steps forward to aid women, that were much ahead of her time. Her ‘Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha’ supported rape victims and pregnant women in addition to fighting the common practice of female infanticide. Phule is now referred to as ‘the mother of Indian feminism.’ She promoted widow remarriage and tried to abolish child marriage. Phule herself was a victim of child marriage, as she was married at the age of nine. In 1897, she opened a clinic for the victims of pandemic of bubonic plague, along with her son. While helping a young boy suffering from the disease, she was infected. She passed away on March 10, 1897 but not before leaving us with a better India - long before it was independent.

This 19th century Indian feminist didn't just educate women— she helped rape victims and pregnant women

 Around 550 women's issues experts from around the world — that included academics, health workers, policy-makers and NGO workers, of which 43 are based in India — were asked to rank the top 10 amongst the 193 United Nations member states based on six main categories: healthcare, discrimination, cultural traditions, sexual violence, and human trafficking. Of these, India has managed to bag the first position in three categories - <ul><li>Cultural traditions that include acid attacks, <keyword id="6454554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Female-genital-mutilation">female genital mutilation</keyword>, child marriage, forced marriage, stoning, physical abuse or mutilation as a form of punishment/retribution and female infanticide. </li><li>Sexual violence that includes rape as a weapon of war, domestic rape, rape by a stranger, the lack of access to justice in rape cases, sexual harassment and coercion into sex as a form of corruption.</li><li>Human trafficking that includes domestic servitude, forced labour, bonded labour, forced marriage and <keyword id="464950" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sexual-slavery">sexual slavery</keyword>. </li></ul>

 This survey is a repeat of the one conducted seven years ago, in 2011. The respondents at that time were asked to pick the top five countries that are dangerous for women in which India featured in the fourth position.  What is perhaps truly disturbing is despite the outcry that followed the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-20863707">2012 Delhi gangrape</a> and the recent <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-43722714">Kathua</a> child rape incident and many more reports of crimes against women, there's little by way of noticeable moves from authorities. Though <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-21950197">new laws</a> have been brought into place and/or dated laws have been updated, big changes are yet to be seen on the ground. In fact, according to the <a href="http://ncrb.gov.in/StatPublications/CII/CII2016/pdfs/NEWPDFs/Crime%20in%20India%20-%202016%20Complete%20PDF%20291117.pdf">National Crime Records Bureau data</a>, from 2016, cases of crimes against women rose by nearly 40% to a staggering 338954 cases between 2012 and 2016.

India is now the most dangerous country for women: report

Her remarks signal that Democrats are working to flip the "freedom" script against Republicans, who have in recent years heralded it as their own amid Biden administration-imposed COVID restrictions.None have done so more so than DeSantis, who called his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-desantis-second-term-agenda-2024-presidential-run-2023-1">forthcoming agenda</a> for Florida the "Freedom Blueprint" and frequently refers to his home state as "the free state of Florida" or "the freest state." Harris's speech — right in DeSantis' home state by the US's first female vice president — comes just days after Florida health officials sent a letter to pharmacies warning them not to dispense the abortion pill mifepristone. The vice president, who has been at the forefront voice for the administration's on abortion rights, announced that President Joe Biden would be signing a memorandum to make abortion pills easier to access. It'll have federal officials consider new ways for patients to get mifepristone, a medication that ends a pregnancy through 10 weeks of gestation. It would also direct those agencies to find ways for patients to access abortion "free from harassment, threats, or violence." "Can we truly be free if a woman cannot make decisions about her own body? Can we truly be free if a doctor cannot care for her patients? Can we truly be free if families cannot make intimate decisions about the course of their own lives?" Harris, speaking delivered at a concert and nightclub venue the Moon, said.Harris' speech follows a letter from Florida's Agency for Healthcare Administration, which said pharmacies were not allowed to dispense the <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-abortion-pill-what-to-know-about-self-managed-abortions-2020-11">abortion pill</a> because under state law a doctor must be the one to give it to patients, after an initial meeting 24 hours earlier. Seventeen other states have similar prescribing laws as Florida. The bill has no chance of passage because Republicans control the US House. In early January, DeSantis was also <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/kristi-noem-spokesman-unloads-on-ron-desantis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attacked from the right</a> for his abortion policies. Ian Fury, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem's spokesman, criticized DeSantis for "hiding behind a 15-week ban" in <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/kristi-noem-spokesman-unloads-on-ron-desantis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">comments to National Review</a>. "Does he believe that 14-week-old babies don't have a right to live?" Fury asked. Senior Biden administration officials said during a phone call with reporters Wednesday that the Biden team picked Florida for Harris to make her speech about abortion rights given the state's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-florida-abortion-ban-will-hit-surrounding-states-2022-4">15-week abortion ban</a>, which doesn't have exceptions for rape and incest.Still, they added that Florida was "a place that offers greater access than its neighbors" because surrounding states have abortion bans that begin even earlier in pregnancy. Reproductive rights groups are working to put the issue of abortion before Florida voters through a 2024 ballot measure. Fried told Insider that advocates were still early in the process as they worked to get the precise, legal language of the ballot correct. After that, the work of gathering signatures will kick off. Badal who was 10th to take oath during the swearing in ceremony held today, will once again hold the Food Processing ministry. In the first term of the Modi government too, Badal held the position of Union Cabinet minister of Food Processing. In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Harsimrat Kaur Badal won the seat from Bathinda by defeating Amrinder Singh Raja Warring of Congress by over 21,000 votes. While campaigning for the elections, Badal took to the stage and brought out the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, operation Bluestar to campaign against the Congress. Badal, a member of Shiromani Akali Dal, is a Member of Parliament from Bathinda, Punjab and comes from the political legacy Badal family of the state. Her husband Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, was the deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. Her father-in-law Parkash Singh Badal was a four-time Chief Minister of Punjab. She is appreciated for her initiative – Nanhi Chhaan – in 2008 to fight female infanticide and empower women.

Indian families often prefer male children for a number of cultural reasons, including property being passed on to sons over daughters, women moving into their husband's home after marriage, and families having to pay a dowry to propose marriage for their daughter. The gender imbalance has led men to outnumber women in India, as well as China, by 70 million, the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/world/too-many-men/?utm_term=.1a5d7c6c9f73">Washington Post</a> revealed last year, creating imbalances in the labor market, increases in violent crime, and a society of bachelors with a steadily diminishing dating pool. In response to the Census data, India has introduced measures in recent years to increase awareness and improve welfare services aimed at girls.
