<ul><li>India’s central bank has launched <keyword id="4361463" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi-payment" source="Orion">UPI payment</keyword> service for feature phones. </li><li>This will bring non-smartphone users to the platform and enable them to pay digitally without needing an internet connection. </li><li>The move will further fuel India’s digital payment adoption.</li></ul>The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has rolled out Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword>) for feature phones. Following his announcement in December 2021, the RBI governor has now delivered the promise of bringing the simplified digital payment service to non-smart mobile phones in India. The UPI payment system was limited to smartphones with internet connectivity till now. While UPI turned out to be a hit for fuelling digital payments in the country, its accessibility to the masses with feature phones was awaited for a long time. “While we have been growing impressively in digital payments, a large part of digitisation is limited to people with smartphones. There are about 40 crore <keyword id="1094150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="feature-phone" source="Orion">feature phone</keyword> users who have limited access to digital payments," said T Rabi Sankar, RBI deputy governor. UPI is a platform developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) together with the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks Association (IBA). It is a platform that brings together various banking services and features in a single app. Users have a unique UPI ID that can be used to send and receive payments using a secure PIN. These payments can be made using a mobile number associated with the UPI ID as well. Digital payment via UPI is not only safe, but it fastens and simplifies the way we send and receive money. It also makes payments seamless for new age app-based food delivery, ride-hailing, e-commerce and similar services. In the calendar year 2021, UPI touched record high transactions, both in volume and value terms. As per <a href="https://www.npci.org.in/what-we-do/upi/product-statistics">National Payments Corporation of India</a> (NPCI), UPI processed more than 38 billion transactions, amounting to ₹71.59 trillion. With the launch of UPI on feature phones, the transactions are projected to grow even further in CY 2022. RBI rolls out UPI for feature phones — you will no longer need a smartphone or internet to make payments digitally

Smartphones are already in wide use across most developed markets. In early adopter regions like the U.S., U.K., Australia, much of Western Europe, and a major portion of Asia-Pacific, adoption has ticked well past half of mobile users.
As the smartphone rises, its mobile forebearer, the feature phone, is quickly becoming extinct.

The End Of The Feature Phone Is In Sight

Although some phone manufacturing companies are already giving Indians an option of local languages in their devices, very soon it would be mandatory for all feature phones sold in India to be compatible with a local language. 
 
Bureau of India Standards (BIS) recently received a draft amendment from the Department of Electronics &amp; Information Technology about the same. 
 "It is critical to have digital content in Indian languages and for devices to be compatible with at least one Indian local language for <keyword id="1929810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digital-India">Digital India</keyword> to succeed," a senior government official told ET. Digital India is a programme started by the central government that aims at digitally empowering the country. 
 
BIS would be notifying the order requiring the compatibility by March. Regarding the same service being available in smartphones, the department is yet to decide a date for that. 
 
The sales of feature phones, which make up over 60% of the handset market in India, are slowly being beaten by affordable smartphones. 
As a part of the Digital India initiative, an integrated mobile platform for e-government services would be ready in the coming months. This will facilitate functioning via dedicated apps for 25 key services, which would include passport, visas and the issue of caste certificates, so that Indian citizens can make use of these services from the comforts of their handsets.

All feature phones sold in India would now be compatible with a local language

Hong Kong-based mobile technology company <keyword id="5280784" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="chilli-international-holding-ltd">Chilli International Holding Ltd</keyword> on Tuesday launched what is touted as the world's first <keyword id="4550967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fidget-spinner">fidget spinner</keyword> feature phone 'K188' in India. Priced between Rs 1,200-Rs 1,300, the spinner mobile 'K188' is a compact gadget which also works as a Bluetooth device for smartphones. The phone has 280mAh battery which comes with an expandable memory up to 8GB and offers multimedia options like images, video and music support along with Internet. The company also launched the 'F05' feature phone with A-GPS technology. It is priced between Rs 1500 to Rs 1700. "Our focus for the quarter in on strengthening our brand at the Indian soil and with 'K188' and 'F05', we aim to deliver the industry's most value-for-price products," said Michael Feng, India Sales Head, Chilli International Holding (HK), in a statement. With a 6.1cm LCD display, 'F05' features a 1.3MP camera and dual-sim support.

World's first fidget spinner feature phone is here

Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>’s feature phone was one of the most talked about announcement and <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> made sure it was worth it by launching a ‘smartish’ feature phone that was “effectively” free, finally putting to rest all the speculations about the pricing of the phone before its launch. It’s now clear that the new feature phone from Jio will be a single sim phone. It has to be an important decision for Jio to take as making it a double sim phone is not such a big deal or an expensive feature. It means that <keyword id="4289270" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone">Jio phone</keyword> is only meant for Jio sim. With the announced plan for Jio phone, it is certain to disrupt the entire feature phone market and the plan makes sure that the Jio feature phone users will be tied down to Jio services for minimum three years if they want the phone for free. 
 
The compact single sim Jio phone has 2.4” QVGA display, torch light, FM Radio, Camera and other such feature phone features. The phone will powered by VoLTE and Jio have already announced free voice calls. However even though the phone have single sim tray, Jio phone is not going to be a locked phone. Existing Jio consumers can move to Jio phone with the same number. While the phone is not locked but Jio phone can only be used with Jio sim. Jio has also announced a connector with the phone that will help customers connect Jio phone to all TV sets(not only smart TV) in order to view video content from phone directly on the TV sets. This feature can prove extremely fruitful to Jio considering feature phone users are mainly in the rural areas and modes of entertainment in rural areas are limited hence data on their phones can be their sole medium for entertainment. 
 
It not certain at this point if there is going to be a dual sim Jio phone at a later stage. Single sim phone will go on sale from September and can be prebooked on the Jio website by registering for the JioPhone. Reliance JioPhone’s pre-bookings will start from August 24, though the public beta testing officially starts on August 15.

JioBharat V3 and V4 4G feature phones launched at ₹1,099

New Delhi, May 26 () <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> on Tuesday said it has partnered Vodafone Idea and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to allow <keyword id="1094150" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Feature-phone">feature phone</keyword> users to recharge their numbers using UPI. "Paytm is now empowering feature phone users to recharge for their Vodafone Idea numbers with just a valid UPI ID. Along with the telecom major and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to extend this service throughout the country," Paytm said in a statement. The move would help crore of citizens who mostly use feature mobile phones to now top up their numbers without having the need to visit physical stores, it added. Paytm said that this service is based on the NPCI's payment service *99# which works on the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) channel. This service allows mobile banking transactions using basic feature phones without the need of having a mobile internet data facility for using USSD based banking. "There are over 550 million feature phone users in the country. A majority of them are migrants and daily wage earners. Due to the ongoing lockdown, many people who rely mainly on mobile phone stores, recharge kiosks are finding it difficult to top-up their basic feature phones which rarely have internet data facility," Paytm Senior Vice President Abhay Sharma said. Praveena Rai, chief operating officer of NPCI said the USSD-based service would facilitate feature phone users having a UPI ID to keep in touch with their near and dear ones even if they don't find mobile recharge shops in their localities. "The USSD service would also help people register their UPI IDs on BHIM UPI and provide them with a seamless mobile recharge experience," Rai added. Avneesh Khosla, Director-Marketing of Vodafone Idea Ltd said in the last two months, the company has launched a slew of initiatives to help consumers stay connected. "We believe that this partnership with Paytm will help facilitate a large number of our digitally unconnected customers to recharge through USSD without being dependent on mobile internet, any digital app, or a physical retail touchpoint," he added. If a customer's UPI ID is not registered with BHIM UPI, they then need to dial *99# after which they are shown all bank accounts linked with the mobile number from where the USSD is dialled in. The customer then selects the bank account he wants to register his UPI ID with and sets up a UPI PIN.

The senior Indian official said, “For mobiles and electronics, USB Type-C port has been made mandatory, the industry players are also on board, but for feature phones, wearables and hearables, stakeholders have said that costs would increase.” In the list of hearables that may be exempted from the universal charging port mandate, Apple's AirPods could be exempted. Even though the Indian government is following the European Union (EU) in making USB-C charging ports compulsory for all devices, it is still not confirmed whether it will follow in the same footsteps to make Apple AirPods switch to the USB-C port. This inspiration for adapting a single charger rule is a great initiative to reduce the hassle of carrying different chargers for all electronic devices- phones, cameras, laptops, wearables, and more.
