<p>Eventually, the Farrelly bros <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">-</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> who are writing, directing, and producing the sequel </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">-</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> turned to <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>.</span></p>

Farrelly Brothers Tracked Down 'Blind Billy' On Facebook To Cast Him In 'Dumb And Dumber' Sequel

But shortly after the win, Ali <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2018/12/green-book-controversy-shirley-family-lies-mahershala-ali-apology-1202028687/">apologized to the Shirley family</a>.</p><p>Both Ali and the film's director, Peter Farrelly, said they did not know any members of the Shirley family were still alive with whom they might have consulted about the film's screenplay.</p><p>The film was further marred during an audience question-and-answer session when Mortensen, speaking about racial progress in America, used the N-word while sitting next to Ali. <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/viggo-mortensen-says-sorry-using-n-word-q-a-1159813">In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter</a>, Mortensen apologized for using the word.</p><p>"Although my intention was to speak strongly against <keyword id="44060" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Racism">racism</keyword>, I have no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing that word in any context, especially from a white man," he said. "I do not use the word in private or in public. Viggo Mortensen says criticism of 'Green Book' is 'inaccurate, mendacious, and irresponsible'

<p>Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey will reprise their roles as Harry and Lloyd 20 years later in "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2096672/">Dumb and Dumber To</a>." While both are expected to be receiving hefty paychecks for the followup, the original movie was a different story.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For the first "Dumb" film, Daniels was only paid around $50,000 <span>- </span>far less than his co-star Carrey, who received a $7 million payday.</span></p>
<p class="p1">In an <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/farrelly-brothers-talk-dumb-dumber-747853">interview with The Hollywood Reporter</a>, writer-directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly revealed how the studio, New Line, initially didn't even want Daniels in the role.</p>
<p class="p1"><span>"Jeff Daniels was not the obvious choice because he hadn't done any, you know, out and out comedies before that," Bobby Farrelly told THR. "He was always comedic in his roles." </span></p>
<p class="p1">The comedy duo loved him in 1986's action comedy "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=somethingwild.htm">Something Wild</a>," and they fought for him after seeing his chemistry during script readings with Carrey.</p>
<p><span>"The studio didn't want him," Bobby added. "They said, 'Please, anyone but him. Get a comedic actor.'  So they offered him, if I recall, 50 grand, which was, you know, Jim's getting seven mil, they offered him 50 figuring he'll say, 'No, I'm not taking that,' but he took it."</span></p>
<p class="p1">Today, Daniels receives $150,000 <em>per episode</em> for HBO's "The Newsroom," now in its final season, <a href="http://www.tvguide.com/PhotoGallery/TV-Highest-Paid-Stars-1052226/1052298">according to TV Guide</a>.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">THR reports Carrey was originally offered $350,000 for the role, but after "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" took off at the box office, that figure eventually snowballed into a $7 million payday. </span></p>
<p class="p1">"<a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&amp;id=aceventura.htm">Ace Ventura</a>," released in Feb. 1994 made $12.1 million opening weekend and $107 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"As I recall it went something like this, they offered him $350,000 to do the movie and he [Carrey] passed," <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/farrelly-brothers-talk-dumb-dumber-747853">Peter Farrelly told THR</a>. "He [Carrey] wanted like 400,000. And they held off. And then Ace Ventura came out, which was his first movie and it was number one. ... So then, you know, they said, 'Okay, we'll give you the 400.' He said, 'No, I want 500.' And then they said, 'No, you're not getting 500.'"</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Another week passed, Ace was number one again," he added. "And they said, 'We'll give you five.' 'No, I want 750.' Long story short, it got up to seven million and that's what he got paid. The whole budget was 16 million and Jim got seven, which was the most ever for any comedic actor."</span></p>

<p>It paid off as "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dumbanddumber.htm">Dumb and Dumber</a>," released Dec. 1994 opened bigger than "Ace Ventura," scoring $16 million upon debut.</p>
<p>The movie held the number one spot at the box office for <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=dumbanddumber.htm">four weeks</a> and went on to make over <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dumbanddumber.htm">$257 million worldwide</a> on an estimated $17 million budget.</p>
<p>"Dumb and Dumber To," out Friday, <a href="http://deadline.com/2013/06/toldja-dumb-and-dumber-to-proves-no-brainer-for-universal-studio-locks-deal-for-farrellys-jim-carrey-jeff-daniels-524186/">cost a reported $35 million</a> to make according to Deadline. Early estimates from Boxoffice.com project the film to <a href="http://pro.boxoffice.com/statistics/movies/dumb-and-dumber-to-2014?q=dumb%20and%20dumber">break even opening weekend</a>.</p>
<p>The number may be a bit high considering Carrey's attempt big push to return to theaters in the past year didn't go over so well. Warner Bros.'s magician film, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=burtwonderstone.htm">The Incredible Burt Wonderstone</a>," also starring Steve Carell bombed making $27.4 million.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The actor hasn't </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=jimcarrey.htm">commanded a film with a $30 million opening</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> since 2009 "A Christmas Carol." Carrey's recent hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live" <a href="http://deadline.com/2014/10/saturday-night-live-ratings-jim-carrey-host-861644/">boosted ratings</a> for the comedy variety recently, but he came on a week after the show had its <a href="https://deadline.com/2014/10/saturday-night-live-ratings-low-bill-hader-849973/">worst ratings ever</a>.</span></p>
<p>A 2003 prequel to the series, "Dumb and Dumberer," which didn't involve the Farrelly brothers or Carrey and Daniels, made <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dumbanddumberer.htm">$39.3 million worldwide</a>.</p>

<p>The sequel to the 1994 Farrelly brother's hit reunites original costars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels on screen 20 after the initial hit.</p>
<p>"Dumb and Dumber" is one of the most recent films to receive the belated-sequel treatment. <span>In the next few years, even more "Star Wars," "Toy Story," and "Terminator" movies will be coming our way.</span></p>
<p><span>But just because Hollywood is bringing back a classic, doesn't mean it will be a hit the second (or third or fourth) time around.</span></p>
<p><span>We've rounded up 12 other movie sequels that have taken more than a decade to come to theaters, in order from least amount of time between films to most.</span></p>

12 Movie Sequels That Took 10 Years Or More To Hit Theaters

<p>Twenty years after the original "Dumb and Dumber" became a box office hit raking in over <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dumbanddumber.htm" target="_blank">$247 million worldwide</a>, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are reuniting for "Dumb and Dumber To."</p>
<p>Except this time, the <span class="itemprop">Farrelly brothers'</span> movie looks even more crude and cringe-worthy than the first.</p>
<p>Carrey and Daniels debuted the new trailer on the "Tonight Show" with Jimmy Falllon on Tuesday, and here's what we learned:</p>

Instead, it may have helped steer audiences in the opposite direction.</span></p>
<p>The comedy composed of a bunch of shorts featuring more than 20 stars including Richard Gere, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, and Hugh Jackman followed three teens trying to find the most banned movie of all time.</p>
<p>Essentially, it looked like overly-stuffed celebrity films <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=valentinesday.htm" target="_blank">Valentine's Day</a>" or "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=newyearseve.htm" target="_blank">New Year's Eve</a>" (both of which fared much better at theaters opening weekend).</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Movie 43" wasn't the only new release in theaters to suffer from a poor opening.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Jennifer Lopez's return to theaters with Jason Statham in "Parker" didn't fare much better, leaving room for Jeremy Renner's "Hansel and Gretel" film to beat out both (though </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">that may have been because of his "Avengers" star power as arrow-shooting Hawkeye).</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Meanwhile, Weinstein Company films and Jessica Chastain continue to please while other Oscar-nominated films began to lose their appeal with audiences.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Out of the top ten this week include "The Hobbit" after seven weeks and Marlon Wayans' "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hauntedhouse.htm" target="_blank">A Haunted House.</a>"</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here are this weekend's winners and losers at the box office:</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">10. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=lesmiserables2012.htm" target="_blank">Les Misérables</a>" rounds out the top ten this week with $3.9 million. The foreign box office has helped bring the musical to $312.9 million worldwide at theaters. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">9. Mark Wahlberg's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=brokencity.htm" target="_blank">Broken City</a>" dropped four spots in week two with $4 million.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">8. Warner Brother's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=gangstersquad.htm" target="_blank">Gangster Squad</a>" is hurting. The film added another $4.2 million to it's paltry $39.6 million earnings in the U.S. In three weeks, the mob movie barely passed its estimated production budget of $60 million worldwide.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">7. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=movie43.htm" target="_blank">Movie 43</a>" featuring Halle Berry, Emma Stone, and practically every other celebrity under the sun bombed with $5 million. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Director Peter Farrelly even admitted he didn't </span><a href="http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=98887" target="_blank">expect the film to get rave reviews</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. The film cost an estimated $6 million to produce.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">6. Weinstein Company's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=djangounchained.htm" target="_blank">Django Unchained</a>" may not have won over fans with its controversial dolls; however, the film is still going strong in week five with another $5 million. Quentin Tarantino's latest has brought in a total of $257.8 million worldwide.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">5. Jennifer Lopez's last few films haven't been box-office gold ("The Back-up Plan" / "What to Expect When You're Expecting") and "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=parker.htm" target="_blank">Parker</a>" was no different with $7 million. The film grossed less than star Jason Statham's "Safe" last year which debuted to $7.9 million. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">4. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=binladen.htm" target="_blank">Zero Dark Thirty</a>" dropped two spots earning $9.8 million. The Osama Bin Laden flick has now earned $77.6 million worldwide despite its <a href="http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/exclusive--bigelow-has-%E2%80%98no-regrets%E2%80%99-for-zero-dark-thirty-torture-scene-101023416.html" target="_blank">controversial waterboarding scenes</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">3. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=silverliningsplaybook.htm" target="_blank">Silver Linings Playbook</a>" doesn't budge at all earning $10 million in week 11 bringing its worldwide total to $86.3 million. At this rate, the Oscar-nominated film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper will hit $100 million worldwide in the next two weeks.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">2. Jessica Chastain's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=mama.htm" target="_blank">Mama</a>" continues to deliver scares in week two with $12.9 million. The film took a big dip 54 percent dip in week two at theaters.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">1. Jeremy Renner's Grimm fairytale "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hanselandgretelwitchhunters.htm" target="_blank">Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters</a>" didn't bomb, opening at $19 million this weekend. It may be difficult for the "Avengers" star's latest flick to earn more than the film's estimated $50 million budget.</span></p>
